If you find it turned on then you should probably go to "Edit - Changes
- Accept or Reject" and click the "Accept All" button, or accept or
reject each change individually.

...

QUESTION: Regarding "accept/reject," I've not been able go from the text to the corresponding item in the table so that I can selectively A/R one change. I do see that clicking on the list brings up the corresponding text, but the list sorts by time, not by location in the document, so finding the item in the list that represent something in the text is a hit-or-miss adventure (my documents tend to be 50+ pages, edited multiple times, with LOTS of changes tracked).

There seems to be nothing in the right-click menu when a tracked change is
selected that allows A/R of that change--appropriate for a feature suggestion?

Re: [users] Re: calc - trimming extremes from a data set

2006-04-15 Thread Joe
I'm amazingly rusty on basic statistics, but wouldn't something like the
following work?
Take the mean and standard deviation for the whole set. Then calculate
z scores for each value (essentially translate the values into their
deviations from the mean. Then, all you have to do is look for all
values whose z scores are too big or too small (both sides of the bell
curve).
I don't remember exactly how to do the math and I certainly don't know
how to code it in calc, but with the if, lookup, and vlookup, etc. it's
probably not that difficult.

It's been longer than I'm willing to admit since I've done any

individual points rather than the avg for the whole set?

Depends on what statistics you're trying to glean. There is a function
called trimmean() that lops off the bottom and top 5% of values before
calculating a mean. Also, in general, sometimes the median (the middle
value when the values are ranked) can be a more useful indicator of
central tendency than a straight mean. Economists use that a lot to
keep somebody like Bill Gates or John Rockefeller from screwing up the
average when looking at incomes or wealth.

Hmmm... reading your post again, I'm not exactly sure I understand
what you are asking. Do you want to calculate statistics in such a way
that the oddball values don't skew the results or are you looking for
a way to find the oddball values themselves to pinpoint anomalies?

paste direct from the external source?
Linux doesn't have a clipboard, but most, if not all desktop managers
(kde, gnome, etc.) that run on Linux do.

I use kde and it has an application called klipper which you can put in
your task bar (looks like a little clipboard with a "K" on it). It
keeps a record of the last few things you've copied or cut, so you can
get back to older ones as well as the current one.

This may not relate to your problem, but once in awhile, I copy
something and it won't paste somewhere else. Sometimes, I can open
klipper, select the thing I want to paste and then, when I go back to
where I want to paste it, it works. Don't know why this happens, but it
does help sometimes.

It sounds like OOo is no longer recognising your Calc document as an OOo
file. Could it have become corrupted somehow? Did you save as a .ods
file?

OOo documents are actually ZIP files, so you might see if WinZIP (say)
can expand it. You may need to change the name to add a .zip extension.
You should see a hierarchy of files and subfolders if it's still
recognisable as a ZIP file.

This is a very wild guess, but check that you haven't got "Edit -
Changes - Record" turned on. Because if "Edit - Changes - Show" is also
turned off you may not be aware of it, and it can make Writer behave in
ways that appear a little strange after prolonged use, slowing Writer
down considerably, and the symptoms can be similar to what you describe,
if I recall correctly.

If you find it turned on then you should probably go to "Edit - Changes
- Accept or Reject" and click the "Accept All" button, or accept or
reject each change individually.

As suggested earlier in this thread, use the OOo spadmin app. Maybe you
missed it. (Run it as the 'root' user to install fonts to be available

You haven't provided the type of file.

If the file extension is either .ods or .sxc, and you can still read
other files of that kind, then the file itself has somehow become corrupted.

Note: the fact that you have placed a password on a file does not
prevent anyone from opening a file in an application such as a text
editor, changing the garbage they see either accidentally or purposely,
and then resaving.

If the file has accidently got the incorrect suffix attached to it, just
renaming the file in Windows to have the correct suffix, whether .ods
or .sxc, should fix it.

If your are saving in another format, such as Excel format (extension
.xls) you might try opening this in another application that can read
this sort of file such as MS Excel for an .xls file). If the other
application can open it, try resaving, possibly in different formats,
and try opening those formats in Calc.

If you have automatic backup turned on, then you may have an earlier
uncorrupt version of the file you can use. (The backup facility can be
turned on in Tools -> Options... -> OpenOffice.org -> Load/Save ->
General.) If you have this backup facility turned on, then you should
find a backup file in the path listed in Tools -> Options... ->
OpenOffice.org -> Paths with the same stem name as your problem file but
with the extension .bak. You should be able to open this from within
OpenOffice.org.

I download using LeachGet Manager, it takes time on dial up, but as you are

I hae not use the checksum, however, it may be advisable.

I'd love to do that, but someone will have to make it available first. The
version I have (1.93.129) is all that is listed in Synaptic. Someone else gave
me a repository where I can get 2.0-something, but the repository did not work.
After I added the repository and reloaded Synaptic the new version was listed,
but when I went to install it all I got was a "not found" error message (like a
404 message).

And anyway, I wanted to use the wizard to install fonts from my hard drive, not
from the web. I was hoping that it might make OO.o see my OpenType fonts that
are installed in the system and available to all other apps.

Thanks for the suggestion.

1.9.129 is a Beta version of 2.0.0. It had some bugs that have been

I would recommend you get the Getting Started with Impress chapter of
the Getting Started Guide. It is available at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/index.html. It has
instructions on how to create a slide show. I would recommend paying close
attention to what this chapter says about saving the file on a regular
basis as you create the slide show.
Please remember that you are using the OpenOffice.org office suite and
not MS Office. What this means is when you have created your slide show
project, you will need to do a "Save As" to save it in the PowerPoint
format. (File > Save As and change the File type to

Remember that the target file is linked to the source file on the hard

1) Save the source file.

Mike: You're able to move ranges of cells around (I'm assuming you're
referring to "drag and drop", please correct me if this isn't what you
mean). With ranges, it's actually easier than with Excel. With Excel,
you needed to carefully click on the very edge of the range, then drag.
With Calc, you can click anywhere within the range, even in the middle,
then drag and drop.

With one cell, it's a little different. What you need to do is:

1. Click on the cell you want to move.

2. Drag to select at least one other cell.

3. Drag BACK so that only the original cell is selected.

Now you can drag and drop that one cell.

[users] Question about Hyperlinks

2006-04-15 Thread Joe Marks
I use the Tutorials For OpenOffice and they are very helpful to me. I have one
problem. When I download the Tutorials to my computer, the hyperlinked Table
of Contents is there but the links do not work. The same thing happens when I
email a Tutorial to my friend. When she gets the email, the hyperlinks in the
Table of Contents are not active.

The only way that I can get them to work is by right-clicking in the Table of
Contents and clicking Update Index/Table.

What causes this?
Is it a setting on my computer?
Is it a setting I have changed or not changed in OpenOffice itself?
Or is it just the way that hyperlinks work?

Thanks.

On OOo2.0.x it's File -> Wizards -> Install Fonts From The Web

Chris and CP,

I recall a message from some time ago on one of the lists, possibly
users, that acknowledged that printing a string of that size was not
possible without inserting paragraph breaks. I also recall that there
was a suggestion that other tools were more appropriate for this
particular task. I tried searching for this but after 45 minutes have
given up; so I suggest, Chris, that you split the string into paragraphs
of something like page size if you really want to use OOo.

Download the latest version of OOo. (You will probably want to
download the Windows (bundled with JRE) version. (This choice is found in
the Operating system choice.) Version 2.0.0 and above require a newer
version of JRE than 1.1.3 does.
Install the new version. It will install in a different folder from
1.1.3. During installation, it will look for any 1.1.x versions. Then it
will ask you if you want to use the same settings. That should copy your
settings into the 2.0.2 folder.

Hi,

The first thing you should do is upgrade to OOo2.0.2. Use the download
from OpenOffice.org rather than the distro-packaged version (if
possible).

A 50 page report should be light work for OOo, so please check your
system too.

[users] The best way to answer questions on this list

2006-04-15 Thread CPHennessy
Hi all,

I'd like to remind everyone of a few simple points which may help new users
get the most out of our answers:

1) For many new users they are not always the most comfortable at using the
internet nor email

2) Many will not even know that users@openoffice.org is a mailing list, nor
even how a mailing list works

3) So we need to be patient and polite in our responses

4) We should also CC: the posters of messages that contain a "Delivered-to:
moderator" header since they are from users who are not subscribed and thus
they would otherwise not see our responses.

5) For FAQs we should redirect the users to the appropriate web pages at

    http://user-faq.openoffice.org or http://documentation.openoffice.org

6) For development related email we should redirect the users email advising
them to subscribe to the mailing list to

    dev@.openoffice.org

7) Ignore trolls i.e. those with the "na-na MSWord is better than OOo and
always will be!" attribute or similar as they serve no useful purpose

8) Adhere to the usual Netiquette

Note 1 : So how do I know if someone is not subscribed ?
That is easy : there is a field in every email on this list called
"Delivered-to". For subscribed users it will show your email address. For
unsubscribed users, there will be two "Delievered-to" fields, the one as
described above, and a second one with the value "moderator". Any email
delivered to the moderator and then to the list, means that the email was
from an unsubscribed user and therefore you should try to CC: that user.
Many people use their email tool to filter the users@ emails so that those
with the field "Delivered-to" with a value of "moderator" get flagged to
indicate that they should be treated specially.

Regards

That may be a performance problem with OpenOffice.org.
If you have a chance maybe leave OOo work on opening it for as long as it
needs, just to see what is the time. Also it may be worth opening a bug

2006-04-15 Thread Michael Momich
It has come to my attention that the folks at www.thinkall.com are using the SUN microsystem product OpenOffice in a commercial way to either generate revenues directly or, to promote the sales of other revenue generating products. I checked the SUN microsystem-generated list of authorized CD distributors for the OpenOffice product and, the company ThinkAll was not included in that list.         I've attached a pdf copy of the thinkall.com web page showing the OpenOffice product being advertised for the benefit of thinkall.com customers. You will note that nowhere on the page is any mention made of either SUN microsystems or, the open-source project that is responsible for the coding of OpenOffice and, the subsequent free downloads of this code from the OpenOffice website!     I just thought that
this sort of thing should be well known to SUN microsystems. I hope that SUN microsystems is benefitting from ThinkAll's use of the OpenOffice product as both a promotional and, revenue-generating tool.     Regards, Mike Momich

[users] License

2006-04-15 Thread Dror Ambar

Hi,
I have a question regarding using OpenOffice in a commercial manner:
does it require a different type of licensing if the software is
installed on 50 computers or is it OK to use the standard version
available to download on your website?

Thank you,

Dror Ambar

[users] failures make openoffice unusable

2006-04-15 Thread Dale Snider
Vent frustration

We have been trying to complete a 50 page report. The report is mostly text
with numerous figures.

The Openoffice 2.0 is practically unusable. It hangs the computer, it aborts,
it looses figures (gif images). It does this every 15 to 30 min. It is
impossible to use. It make MS Word look wonderful.

OpenOffice series 1 was far more stable. Series 2 is very buggy giving
continous failures.

Hi Anthony,
Thank you for helping me understand: I've been reading many times #3 of
relative help ("...drag to draw the button") whithout realizing I had to
"draw" the button! I've never been good at drawing ... ;-)

Best regards,
Ennio.

That I believe is dependent on having a working 'sane' install.

[users] printing from command line

2006-04-15 Thread Gene Rackow

Is there any openoffice tool that could be used from the
command line to print a .doc file? or possibly just convert it
to a pdf file? As people move away from MS platforms one of the
things lacking is that they could click on a file and tell it to
be printed. I'd like to be able to either run a conversion
from the command line to get it the file into something usable
and known to my printer like ps or pdf. It would be even nicer
if I could just roll that into a filter that lprng or cups is
able to use. That way the guy with the really old limited laptop
could send the .doc file to the print queue and get something
reasonable out.

[users] OpenOfficeCalc links to other files

2006-04-15 Thread Celeste Marinovich
I have been waiting for later versions of Open Office to see if this problem is
corrected. In Open Office Calc spreadmsheets, when you are in a file, (say the
'target file') and link to another file (say: the source file), then change
figures in the source file, the target file figures do not update.
This is still happening in Version 2.02.

Hi,
I have downloaded your program, it it FANTASTIC.

I have a questions about the templates. I have downloaded a couple of templates

have tried and tried but I just can't seem to get them to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

put it in /opt/Openoffice.org2.0/share/templates/ in Linux
or C:\Program Files\Openoffice.org2.0\share\templates\ in
Windows. The you can open the from File-New-Templates... Optionally you
can download my OpenOffice.org Premium derivate, that already contains
templates galleries and fonts. It's free like the general OOo. (This
time only EN-US and HU versions are available)

Ahh. I misread what you said. I don't know then. Is it possible that the
image is embedded but has a URL link associated with it that Excel can't
resolve? Maybe Calc doesn't try, or fails silently? ??
