[users] Re: Open Office Help

2011-04-26 Thread Andrew Fisk
My guess would be that you downloaded the program and never installed it, you
just ran it from the download file (you had a .dmg file that you clicked on and
a disk icon with open office showed you om your desktop). You probably cleaned
out your downloads folder and threw the install file away. Download it again,
and this time drag the open office icon to the application folder then you can
throw out the installer.

This is going to sound strange, but try the download using firefox instead of
IE -- it's seems that for your "security" IE saves executable files as text

Re: [users] where is the exe on mac osx

2010-09-01 Thread Andrew Fisk
The is no “exe“ on a mac, but take a look in your applications folder and.you
should see an open office folder. Open that and thete will be a pn application
you can launch. Once it is open you can control click on thr icon in the dock
to add it permanently

I'm not sure that annoucing a new open sourced extension is "promotional" any
more than the anncoement of a new version of Open Office.org would be
promotional. how about saying thanks instead of coming up an unrealistic list
of feature requests. You really expect a grammar checker that works in 92

Keeping 2.4 makes sense for a production environment - putting uses

silly, but I think you would resolve most of the issues you see if you

I would follow the advice to use the Aqua beta -- I have been using
it for several months and it seems very stable (I just use some light
WP/SS) -- that way you skip not only the issues with X11, but all the
associated font and printing problems.

and I am not sure that negative feedback to a seller on ebay is
warranted unless they promised you the install disks were part of the
package -- it's kind of like moaning that a used car doesn't have an
owners manual -- it's a pain, you know you can buy one from the deal
if you really need one, but you saved some $$$ and you got a Mac --
you are already miles ahead of 93% of the world :)

Hello Bob,

Welcome to OpenOffice.org... just a few more steps.
It helps to read the How-To's in order to install OOo on your Mac:
see http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/faq/installing/X11.html
The X11 for Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.x) has to come from your Mac
Install disks
The 'newer version' that is talked about is Tiger, compared to
Panther

from the Apple site.
X11's place is in the Auxiliaries map inside Programs/Applications

Robert
-- please reply only to users@openoffice.org --

• You can wait for the Aqua native Mac version of OOo

• Use a as yet unfinished Alpha (or Beta) version of the Aqua-Mac-OOo
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/aqua.html

• While waiting for a stable Aqua-OOo, you can use NeoOffice, a fork
of OOo that already works stable without X11.
http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php

• I think X11 (version 1.1.3 - XFree86 4.4.0) can also be downloaded
for free from the XFree86 site:
http://www.xfree86.org/releases/rel440.html
please read the information provided there (I haven't time to go
through that right now for you)

• But maybe the simpliest way -if it works, which I don't know- is
that I send you the X11 file off list and you put it into
Applications/Auxiliaries (where you also have Terminal, Java etc.)
It's 868 KB.

Re: [users] [moderated] Downloading issues.

not to send you back though that mess of pages again, but

There are really two links on the line for the download (English
(OpenOffice.org 2.2.1) BitTorent -US) -- the section on the left is a
download for the installer, the section on the right is for the bit
torrent file, that will require a bit torrent client -- IF it really
took you 21 mins to download the torrent file (which is 48k) you
really need to get the software on a cd becuse it will take you days
to download the entire application.

My guess is that you have downloaded the real thing and that you
computer dosn't know what to do with the file -- could you let me
know what error message you get when you try to open the file?

You might want to check out neooffice.org -- this is a much more "mac
like" version of Open Office and does not require X widows to run.
You might find the download and install a little eaiser.

X11 has nothing to do with Microsoft Windows. It is a display

Unix and Unix-like operating systems that pre-dates MS Windows by
many years.

US.dmg.torrent

The torrent file will require that you have a Bittorrent file
installed. The
torrent is just a pointer to the actual file that you need. If the
only file
that you have is the torrent file, you haven't got the file that is
the actual

OpenOffice.org program.

14) 21 minutes later if finished
15) I can't open it. : (

Not a big surprise if you don't have a Bittorrent client and
downloaded only

the torrent file.

Ok I have just gone through the web page and found you the exact
direct
link to the file that you need to download. (This took me all of
about 30
seconds to do; I really don't see how it's difficult to find --
this is the
first time I've tried to find Mac-anything software anywhere,
including

OpenOffice.org.)

Here:

http://openoffice.bouncer.osuosl.org/?
product=OpenOffice.org&os=macosxppc&lang=en-US&version=2.2.1

I assume that you want the English-language version. You get a
binary file

that's in a .dmg format which, according to this:
http://filext.com/file-extension/DMG is a Macintosh disk image file.

Note that you will require X11 to run this, instructions here:

http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/faq/installing/X11.html

I guess you all just want me to shell out the money for MS Office.

How you spend your money and the software that you choose to run on
your

computer is irrelevant to me.

Why would the web designer make this process soo difficult?

Again, I found what you need in about 30 seconds, and had no
difficulty doing
so. You must read the web page carefully and if you don't
understand the
terminology used (for example: X11 and in my case the .dmg file
extension) then
run the words that you don't understand through Google or something
and learn
what they mean before assuming that they are a mere irrelevant
detail. I used
Google just now to find out what a .dmg file is. When dealing with
computers,
one word can make a very important difference, and if you don't
understand what
you're reading it can make it impossible to accomplish the goal
that you have

in mind.

I don't see how I can make this much simpler, but if you have
further questions
I will try to assist you. Note that I don't have a Mac -- in fact,
the last
Mac that I had anything to do with was one of the original black-
and-white
Macintosh machines around 1985, and even then my exposure lasted
for less than
3 hours total. I assume they have advanced somewhat since then, so
I can't
offer too much by way of specific direction with regard to
Macintosh issues.

Re: [users] OpenOffice auto update check DOS

2007-03-03 Thread Andrew Fisk

Jeff,

Maybe you are looking at the problem from the wrong direction -- if
your firewall did not block the update site, you would have made one
connection downloaded the updates and been done. I am sure (or at
least I hope) that your comapny does not block MS Windows, MS office
updates or virus updates, I am equaly sure that if Open Office.org is
an application that you are allowed to run on your network, your
network support folks would be willing to make the changes needed to
allow you to update as needed.

You also might want to check your machine, as I would have thought
that an issue this serious would have made this list before today --
there may be something in your config that is magnifying the problem.

I have had OpenOffice installed to my work computer for some time with
no problems. Then I upgraded to OO2.1
The 1st time I launched it, the wizard asked me if I wanted it to
automatically check for updates. I said "yes".

For some odd reason, both our firewall and our web-blocker block
much of

the OpenOffice links. I can get to the main website and nearly all
pages, but I'm not allowed to download it. Apparently the automatic
update is also blocked.

What happened was a virtual Denial Of Service attack as the OpenOffice
automatic update service fired off persistent queries a gazillion
times

per second, each blocked by our firewall. Without my knowledge, my
computer was pretty much destroying all Internet use at my company
for a

few hours - until they tracked the culprit down. I brought up Task
Manager and killed "soffice.exe" and "soffice.bin" while on the phone
with the Systems group. The DOS attack immediately stopped.

Maybe stuff like this is why OpenOffice is blocked from being
downloaded?

The OpenOffice automatic update check needs to be re-thought. It
should
not send out perpetual packets the way a running service does. It
should
be one-time queries when an OpenOffice application is launched.
This is

how Mozilla FireFox does automatic updates and it works great.

If OpenOffice ever hopes to compete, things like this must be solved.

Also you should be able top find an english version of

Do you have X11 installed, if not you will need to install either the
DVD that came with you mac.

Double click the file called Optional installs

Go through the installation process and Select X11

Open Office.org is available for the intel macs -- text edit is just
that, a text editor -- it was never intended to be a word processor
-- Take a look in your Applications Folder, then in the iwork folder

the whole Apple OSX interface, you will like Pages, if not it will
drive you nuts!

Re: [users] OOO-Writer prints black text by mixing color inks

2006-05-14 Thread Andrew Fisk
You might find that it is a printer driver problem, I use an HP 7310
in my office, and could not figure out why I was using so much
colored ink -- until I ran out of magenta -- all of a sudden all my
text was green.

I spoke with HP tech support who suggested that I replace the GIMP
print driver I was using with the HP all-in-one 2.1 driver -- problem
solved. I had avoided installing the HP software that came with the
printer because of all the other stuff they seem to think I wanted --
if you are using an HP product you can now download just the drivers
rather than having to deal with all rest of the stuff.

the

expected black output from the black color ink tank.

I am aware that under File->Printer Settings one can enforce
greyscale printing, but I rather would like to know where the

might be.

Any clue how to prevent wasting color ink ?

Try File > Print > Options > Print black.

Tried that, thanks for the guess. Nope, printout is still blueish.

I also tested X11-preferences (on the Mac, OOO X11 is started
first, than OpenOffice), where you can select Output colors -> from
display, 256, thousands, millions. All of these gave the same
result: black font on screen, blueish printout. After export to
PDF, black font is printed black.

[ a little later...]

I now found its an X11 problem. Printing from an X11 terminal out
of emacs for instance also results in blueish printing. Will dig
deeper soon..

Re: [users] Finding documents ?

2006-05-14 Thread Andrew Fisk
If Google Toolbar works for Windows users, and Mac users can use
Spotlight, I think that we are leaving the *nix users out in the cold
with the find, sed unzip option, but being wonderful thing that open
source is, google comes up with all kind of interesting looking tools
for indexing & searching documents -- all for free!

As an alternative, and I know this may seem a little old fashioned,
but I have a folder for my customer info -- and a folder inside that
for each customer and then folders for each project -- it makes
finding things fairly easy and it's the one folder I KNOW is going to
be backed up.

There are two versions of OpenOffice.org for the Mac. One is
written to
use the Unix part of MacOS X; you must install the X11 part of
MacOS X
from your CD-ROM to use it. (X11 is the part of Unix that does
windows
and stuff. Since MacOS X has its own Mac-flavored windows, it
normally
leaves X11 out, since it is only needed to run windowing Unix
programs.)

The other is called NeoOffice (or NeoOffice/J). It uses Java to
run as a
normal MacOS program, and would probably be easier for you to
use. See
http://www.neooffice.org>. (Note, however, that it does
not, at
present, run on Intel Macs, and that, because it is a modified
version
of the original OpenOffice.org, it is a couple of versions
behind.)

The long-term plan is to make a straightforward MacOS ("Cocoa")
version;

but there are complications.

Re: [users] Thank you! Last question: Why does the window titled xterm open in OS X when I start OOo?

you need to have x windows running -- and I have never found a way to
start X11 without the window -- you can close it or minimize it after
you have open office open.

Hi

Are you running on Ubuntu OS? If so, I have had numerous problems
with the version of OO that installs with the OS of exactly the
kind of thing you seem to be experiencing. The solution has been to
download OO from the OO website, convert to .deb files and do a
manual install. Also make sure you download and use JRE 1.5.0 and
not 1.4.x.

I have had a fair amount of frustration, but now it seems ok after
doing this. I tested this out on several platforms, ie same version
of OO on Windows, Linux Mandrake, SuSE and I'm sure it's not an OO
issue.

Yes it's compatible, and for a new mac user I would suggest that you
take a look at neooffice.org -- and if your friend just purchased a

pretty good mac word processor, very (very) osx interface, but if

I would re install, and put the application in the Applications

of thumb, Mac applications will try to install themselves in the

will find them where they expect them and you won't throw them away

Re: [users] Switch to non-OOo output rendering mode

2006-03-27 Thread Andrew Fisk
I would guess that the issue is not with Open Office, but with your
printer setup in X11 -- you didn't say what you use for an output
device, but printer drivers and printing systems can do funny things
to you. Try creating a PDF from each application even from MS Office
you could generate a preview PDF with the Mac printer driver, them
print both to the same printer from the desktop and see if you still
see the same problem. Comparing things on the screen is even more
haphazard, as your screen resolution, video card and even things like
font smoothing will all effect the way that things look.

If you are missing essential cabs from your OS or whatever, I suggest
that you should fix this first.

As to using OOo for opening PowerPoint files, yes it will do so
providing that your system is in good shape.

Re: [users] Install OO on iMac Intel

2006-03-21 Thread Andrew Fisk

Bad news -- no you can't easily move fonts from a PC to mac

Good news -- The two you mention should already be on your mac --

More bad news -- X11 is (kind of) like having a second OS on your
machine -- so you need to install the fonts --

You have two choices --
Go under file -- goto wizards and select "install fonts from the
web" -- run through the Wizard and pick the fonts you want -- given
what you went through with the X11 install you might want to skip
Chinese stuff :)

or

Open OO.o -- once it is open you will see a small white X11 window --
type ./Applications/OpenOffice.org 2.0.app/Contents/openoffice.org2.0/
program/spadmin -- (or copy & paste) -- and this will bring up a
utility that will let you add printers & fonts

Use the OSX DVD that came with your mac, run the installer, and when
you get to the "installation type" section of the install select
"Custom install" rather than easy install -- this will give you a
list of packaged to install -- Select X11 and click continue --

Once it's done, eject the DVD -- put it somewhere safe and have fun

Please forward this info to the twit at Apple, while I guess X11 is

You can always use use OpenOffice.org if you need the DB component --
as you can move the other file formats between the 2 "versions"
easily it's not a real killer to deal with, and if you create a DB in
Open Office, you can access it from Neo.

I guess my first question would be why would you even consider an OS

BTW -- I think you are being a little hard on Ubuntu, The site is
very complete, the wiki answers questions that I would have never
thought to even ask, and there is a very active support community.

Remember that accessing anything from a 52x CD rOM will take about 12
times longer than from your hard drive (you don't notice a 1 second
delay, but 12 seconds seems like forever) -- and with your fairly low
RAM you will be hitting the disk often.

Just as an option, take a look at vector linux -- I just did an
install on a dell PII 166 laptop with 64 MB, you get a nice
(reasonably fast) desktop, a very complete set of apps (including
OO.o 2.0) -- and they also have a live CD so you can test drive.

Have fun!

This was always Apple's logic, figuring that if they had the kids in

Re: [users] Neo Office saving of a file SUPER slow...

2006-03-07 Thread Andrew Fisk
There is no installer for 2.0 -- just drag the application from the
disk image to your applications folder. Make sure you have Apple's
X11 software installed. BTW to save the same file (just under 400k)
from 2.0 and Neo took about the same time. I didn't time it, but it
was less than a minute in each case.

Thanks

not a major hindrance?

THen consider using the X11 version which does not have the JAVA
overhead. This is one of the penalties of using Neo.

Re: [users] office downloaded onto mac computer?

2006-03-03 Thread Andrew Fisk
I guess I should start by telling you you came to the wrong place --
this is a support list for a product called Open Office.org an open
source program that is compatible with, and offers many of the same
functions as Microsoft Office. Even worse -- there is not a stable
version of Open Office that will run on the new Intel based Macs. So
you have a couple of choices -- as a student you can buy Microsoft
Office at a steep discount -- check your local CompUSA or the dealer
where you are buying your Mac. Another alternative would be to use
the free word processor that comes with your Mac -- It's part of the
iWork package called Pages and I think it is great -- you can save
files in MS-Word format so you can exchange them with your
instructors, etc.

Good luck

Re: [users] I'm using MACOSX 10.3.9 & OpenOffice 2.0 under X11 1.0 - XFree86 4.3.0

2006-02-22 Thread Andrew Fisk
For 2.0 there is no installer, if you double click the icon from the
disk image it will launch X11 and then the application. My thought
was that there was a potential issue running from the disk image,
even with the file moved to the desktop as that does not copy the
package (NVU for example, will not run from a disk image). If a user
is going to run use the application anyway, It makes much more sense
to have an installed version, rather than using a disk image on a
regular basis. If you create a document, save it and then unmount
your disk image, the finder will not mount the image and open the app
for you.

Andy,

There is no need to move any files. Once you double click the dmg
file and the disk icon appears on the desktop, double
click to open it if a window doesn't open automatically. Once
opened, just double click on the installer or package and it
will install or work from there. The dmg is a disk image and when
unpacked you have a usable image mounted on the
desktop. You can move the contents to your hard disk or use as is.
Using from the image is quick and easy and once
closed, the original compressed dmg file is still on your disk if
you need to use it again.

Sorry if some of this is a bit basic, but there are many neophytes
who read this list and may not be familiar with it.

I use both OOo 2 and NeoOffic/J. Both have their charms and foibles.

Ah ha!

Did you try dragging it to you applications folder -- moving a
file from a disk image to the desktop does not copy the package(s)
-- if your memory goes back far enough to remember using some kind
of removable RW media (floppy/zip/Jazz...etc) you will recall that
if you moved a file to the desktop, ejected the media and inserted
it in another mac, the file would disappear from the first
machine's desktop and appear on the second one.

Some Applications seem to run fine from a disk image while other
have issues.

I am sure you answered this question already, but you do have X11
installed

Thanks

Let me correct something I said before.

I must correct what I said about downloading and clicking on the
file and it timing out.

I downloaded the file from the OO website
I clicked on the dmg file
It opened in a window and there was an install file.
I moved the file to the desktop
I clicked on the file
I then get the response: command timed out
Then I click OK, and it quits.

Well, that is the whole sequence.

Ideas...

I have the same setup except I have DSL.

Is it possible that something is wrong with the file which was

Did anyone run the md5 test after the file was downloaded but
before the file was invoked to startup?

The md5 value for OO is posted on the OO website.

The way to run the md5 test from within OS X is to open Terminal
and do:

$ md5 filename

Where filename is the OO file which was downloaded. I recommend
that the md5 test embedded within Apple's disk utility not be
used as it is proprietary and not standard with the accepted md5
algorithm. In brief, if you use Apple's md5, you'll never see a
match with any other md5 value which wasn't generated by Apple
or Apple based routines.

If that is ok, then trying checking one's wires, cables and
connections. If one was using dial-up, there could be lot's of
glitches there. Also just because one may choose a higher
bandwidth for file transfer doesn't mean downloads will be perfect.

command timed out

Thats it. We do not get anywhere near actually installing
anything.
