We will hold our next London Wicket Event on Saturday, 21st
November, from 14:45. This time we have hired The Gallery at the
iconic Foyles Bookshop in central London.
We again welcome guests and speakers from several countries,
including at least 3 core committers, Matej, Jeremy and of course,
Alastair, as well as the founders of WiQuery (Wicket-jQuery
integration), Lionel Armanet and his team.

Join us for some very interesting, high quality presentations and to
chat with fellow Wicket users and developers at all levels. We're
expecting this to be another popular event and since places are
limited book and confirm early if you can make it. Details and
registration are at the usual place [1].
There is a cool little Jazz cafe at Foyles too, where there'll be a
live act (Femi Temowo) at 13:00 if you enjoy some Jazz guitar
relaxation before your intellectual stimulation. They offer a decent
range of food and drink there too.

The event schedule looks like:
Cemal Bayramoglu: Introduction
Jeremy Thomerson (USA): Custom JavaScript Integrations with Wicket +
Auto Resolvers

Lionel Armanet (FR): Announcing WiQuery 1.0: Introduction Demo
Matej Knopp (SK): BRIX CMS + Wicket 1.5 Developments QA
Alastair Maw (UK): The Al Talk
Our Regular General Wicket QA with Al and Cemal
We expect to formally finish by around 19:00. I would expect the
usual suspects will be heading somewhere in the neighbourhood for
refreshments straight after the event, and of course you are more
than welcome to join us.

Re: London Wicket Event at Foyles Bookshop, November 21st, 2009

2009-11-18 Thread jWeekend

I have asked Foyles to stock up on Wicket In Action - Manning are sending
10 extra copies which should be on the shelves by Saturday morning. Thanks
for kindly offering to do some signing again, Martijn; my signed copy from
your last visit to the London Wicket Event is looking rather worn these days
so I too may be in the queue at some point.

Foyles do not offer internet connectivity in their Gallery - I will
provide 3G for our presenters (and/or any guests with very pressing needs).
There is free WiFi in their cafe just down the stairs.

We have also arranged coffee for our guests during breaks.

2009-11-17 Thread jWeekend

Ioannis,

I'll provide a video recorder on Saturday and we can give it another try; it
doesn't support an external mic but it should be good enough for viewers
with good speakers! I have a couple of ideas that could improve our chances
of success here too - more soon.

Do you want to be our official camera man? Any other volunteers to share the
load?

For those coming but not signed-up yet, we'll keep registrations [1] open
for another couple of days or until we reach capacity ... remember the Jazz
starts at 13:00 and it looks like a few of us will be starting with that in,
Foyle's cafe, on the 3rd floor.

Ioannis,

It's good to hear from you - I hope you and your family are well!
I have been talking to 2 guest presenters we are flying in from Europe and to potential hosts of our next event just this week; I will make an announcement as soon as everything is confirmed - the next date will probably be in the first week of December, but I may fix something on a smaller scale before then as well.

I think we may also be organising a quiet drink or bite to eat next week - let

Wicket is great at managing server side state for you, but you still write a
lot of boilerplate code for users to easily bookmark your pages.
AJAX makes the problem ten times harder. Come along on Wednesday for instant

Hi Ioannis,

 Hi, folks.
Quick reminder that there's a London Wicket Users Group meet-up on
 Wednesday

It's rather late in the day for me to be announcing the topic of my talk,
but it's going to be interesting:

 *Bookmarkable Everything*

Wicket is great at managing server side state for you, but you still
 write a
lot of boilerplate code for users to easily bookmark your pages.
AJAX makes the problem ten times harder. Come along on Wednesday for
 instant

Re: London Wicket event on Wednesday

2009-06-02 Thread jWeekend

Paul,

Very droll!

Our London Wicket Events [1][2] are not only free, we feed our guests (fresh
Pizza for those arriving before 18:30) and frequently give away goodies like
copies of Wicket In Action. We sometimes pay our international presenters'
expenses, and it is not unheard of for us to cover expenses of some guests
(like students) and to provide accommodation for quite a few of our
international guests over the last 2 years. And, Al has even been known to
dish out Google memorabilia including stuff as odd as Google director's
chairs, if I remember correctly!?
But of course, the main thing is that our guests enjoy a regular (first
Wednesday of every 2nd month) event where people that have any sort of
interest in Wicket can come along, meet others with some common interests,
mingle with well known and respected names in the field, and enjoy excellent
presentations which are always instructive and usually pretty entertaining,
as we work up a bit of a thirst before popping down to the pub.

London Wicket event on Wednesday

2009-06-01 Thread Alastair Maw
Hi, folks.
Quick reminder that there's a London Wicket Users Group meet-up on Wednesday
evening at Google UK in Victoria.

It's rather late in the day for me to be announcing the topic of my talk,
but it's going to be interesting:

*Bookmarkable Everything*

Wicket is great at managing server side state for you, but you still write a
lot of boilerplate code for users to easily bookmark your pages.
AJAX makes the problem ten times harder. Come along on Wednesday for instant
parameterised pain relief.

Sign up here: http://jweekend.co.uk/dev/LWUGReg

Alexander,

It is unlikely that we will record and publish next Wednesday's event.
We post many of our presentations and some movies at our Google Code site

It definitely is an event worth visiting. I had a blast, and enjoyed
every minute of it (except for travelling back at 5am).

Great crowd, finally being able to meet, greet, and drink beers with
luminaries such as Cemal and Al.

I hope we can create such an atmosphere over the world for the Wicket events.

You've probably heard by now that we're flying in Martijn Dashorst for a

London Wicket Event, and as April 1st approaches we're gradually filling up
with 45 registered now. He'll also be signing your copies Wicket In Action,
and the prizes for our raffle this time will be 3 free copies of Wicket In
Action (courtesy of Manning).
Marc Ziman's talk covering agile development with
MySQL/Spring/Hibernate/Wicket is also taking shape and is going to be
interesting.

Martijn Dashorst at London Wicket Event

2009-02-27 Thread jWeekend

I am pleased to announce that after nearly 18 months of gentle persuasion
Martijn Dashorst will be joining us at our next London Wicket Event on April
1st. He will be giving a couple of talks covering very interesting topics
and signing your copy of Wicket In Action. As in the past, we'll give away a
couple of copies too, by raffle.

I will be speaking to Al about the chances of finding a bigger room at
Google or elsewhere since our events are gathering momentum and with
Martijn's presence we could exceed our usual 50-55 limit this time.

I will update the event/registration page at jWeekend's site as soon as I
have a stable schedule (do not try to sign up until then) as I am working on
confirming 2 more very interesting talks.

So make a note in your diaries if you can be in London on April 1st (yes,
that's April 1st) and look out for our formal announcement soon.

Reinout,

It was good to see you and Ronald there and to know that you enjoyed your
time with us - we have again had a lot of excellent feedback but it's always
good (and still a bit surprising) that so many people travel, for just one
night, to our events in London!

Anyway, closer to home, you may be interested in the ApacheCon Europe, 2009
[1] in Amsterdam, on March 23-27, where Martijn and co are organising good
looking talks/classes [2]. jWeekend will be one of the sponsors, but at the
moment, it is looking most unlikely that I will be there (I am working on
it).

Re: London Wicket Event - 4th February @ Google

2009-02-04 Thread jWeekend

I'll be announcing a new initiative tonight to get a few developers together
one evening per week (or every two weeks), at jWeekend's office in London
NW6, to go through Wicket Jira issues. Al Maw and Richard Wilkinson have
already expressed an interest and we'd hope to get around 5-10 people
involved in these regular sessions for those who want to get deeper into
Wicket whilst making a small contribution to its development.

Anyway, Daan arrived at our offices yesterday afternoon and Jan has just
sent me an SMS saying he's boarding his flight, so, despite the severe
disruption to transport here in London over the last couple of days, it
looks like we will be running the event exactly as planned.

We have about 50 names down now with a few yet to confirm, so there are just
a couple of places left if you want to make a last minute
http://jweekend.com/dev/LWUGReg/ registration .

We have a good understanding with the security staff and this will normally
not be an issue, although it is much better for us if people can get there
on time for 18:30 (and even a few minutes early so they can enjoy the Pizza

Send me a note (directly, via the jWeekend site or in reply to your

make a special arrangements with security so you are sure to get in.

Francisco,

Thanks, I hope you can find a good excuse to come and participate in one of
our events in the future, I'm sure you'd enjoy the experience. We have had
people come over, sometimes just for the evening, from several countries.

We are often able to publish slides on one or more of the
http://www.jweekend.com/dev/ArticlesPage/ jWeekend Resources page , on our
London Wicket http://code.google.com/p/londonwicket/ Google code project
and/or http://londonwicket.org/ here .

We have also started experimenting with making video recordings but our
efforts to date have not done justice to our speakers. We may try again this
time (that reminds me Marius ... ?!).

I will be going over the presentation material with Dean, Daan and Jan in
the next few days and should be able to confirm the above on this list then
or as soon we have uploaded the material.

7th August London Wicket Event

2008-08-07 Thread Yiannis Mavroukakis

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say a quick thank you to Cemal, Al et al for organizing
this event, last night was very informative,

especially the Terracotta presentation.
The only gripe I've got (besides warm beer :-P ) is the frequency of the
event..I think bi-monthly is far too far apart for
such a fast paced framework as Wicket..Any chance this can be done on a
monthly basis?

Thanks!

I'd also like to pass on my thanks, I enjoyed meeting and chatting to you all
and I learnt a lot in the course of the evening both through the
presentations and just chatting informally. It's great to see such friendly

If anyone reading this happens to be in/near London when one of these events

of experience with Wicket.

Cheers,

Re: 7th August London Wicket Event

2008-08-07 Thread Al Maw
Thanks for the kind words. I really liked Carl's Terracotta stuff -
very cool. Wille's presentation on his WicketRAD framework was also
great. It's really cool to see people getting inspired by and building
on people's code from previous meet-ups! I can't begin to tell you how
rewarding that is. ;-)

Thanks very much to everyone who came along, asked such good questions
and gave the event such a nice feel. I'm definitely thinking about
increasing the frequency if people are keen (even if it's a less
formal gathering in a pub somewhere or something). It's somewhat
dependent on the number of people who'd like to give talks and things.
Who'd be up for a monthly event?

While we're on the subject, who might be up for doing a quick talk at
the next one? I was really impressed by the scope and preparation that
went into the talks this time around, but if you just want to do a
quick demo of your Wicket-based site, or give a five minute talk with
no slides and must arm-waving, that would be cool too.

Thanks again,

Alastair

P.S. Apologies for the slightly warm beer! It was cold at 6:15pm, but
the usual rooms next to a kitchen (with a fridge) weren't available
this time around. I promise we'll fix that for next time!

Re: 7th August London Wicket Event (6th August!)

2008-08-07 Thread jWeekend

Yiannis, Chris,

This is good to hear, thanks. We've been getting plenty of positive feedback
since we started this thing well over a year ago, albeit mostly verbally
until now. Perhaps your reviews here will make others aware of how much our
guests enjoy and look forward to these events.

The quality and variety of the presentations and the increasingly
interactive atmosphere we have been gently encouraging is definitely heading
in the direction I had envisaged from the start. There are a few more
improvements and unorthodox ideas that I want to gradually introduce in the
months to come which I think people would get into, especially now that we
seem to have established a healthy core group of regulars.

I'll talk to Al and we'll come back with some suggestions regarding the
frequency (if I get a chance I may set up a little Wicket component for our
http://jweekend.com/dev/LWUGReg/ registration page to gauge your feedback
so we don't swamp this mailing list). Several people have asked me about
this, so perhaps we could consider going back to once a month, but I am
mindful that we do nothing to disturb the good balance and successful events
we are currently enjoying.

Regards - Cemal
http://www.jWeekend.co.uk http://jWeekend.co.uk

PS To those who were present on August _6th_ (I don't know what event on the
7th you got us mixed up with Yiannis, but we'll accept the compliments ;-) ,
don't forget to send http://jweekend.com/dev/ContactUsBody/ jWeekend a note

event..I think bi-monthly is far too far apart for
such a fast paced framework as Wicket..Any chance this can be done on a
 monthly basis?

 Thanks!

 Ioannis

confirm or cancel following the link in the automated confirmation email.

I'm going to be in Southern California (mainly around San Diego LA) for a
few days from July 20, so let me know if anybody is arranging any Wicket

PS Charlie, it's good to know that you are getting something out of the

other guests who may not be sure if we're offering a good way to spend an
evening!

I'm in! You can't keep me away...

To anyone who is undecided over whether or not to attend, I heartily
recommend it. I think everyone comes away at least with some fresh
ideas or an understanding of some aspect of Wicket they've not yet
used, or they just benefit from talking to people tackling the same or
similar problems as them. (And hey, there's always pizza as well.)

Some of the previous presentations are available at the London Wicket

in as a bonus (time permitting) but that could be one for next time as our
agenda is already bursting at the seams with goodness; we have got some

We'll need to get going at 18:30 sharp to fit it all in, so try to get

Re: [FINALISED SCHEDULE] London Wicket Event at Google UK, tonight

2008-06-04 Thread jWeekend

We've had mixed success with our video technology - we will try again
tonight.

I suggested the topic to Ian, who kindly put some thoughts down for a brief
presentation. Having seen the slides, it seems the key points are now
covered, but I find this is an area where there is a lack of clear
definitions/advice (in one place anyway) and is a constant source of
questions from our students.

If someone has any resources, or wants to make a list of the main points to
consider (login page/hotspot, bookmarkability, scalability, page-params,
stateless hints etc...) apart from the useful links to the wiki-page, please
feel free to reply to this post of to start a new thread - I'm sure the
information collected will help many.

Re: London Wicket Event - June 4th, at Google UK

2008-05-28 Thread jWeekend

With just a week to go, our London event is proving as popular as ever and it
looks like we may fill the auditorium at Google again (~50 places). Make
sure you http://www.jweekend.com/dev/LWUGReg/ register soon and _remember
to confirm or cancel_ using the link in the automated email sooner rather
than later. We have now settled on once every 2 months (usually the first
Wednesday of even numbered months - where, disturbingly for some people I've
known, January is month 1!). This seems about right, WDYT? Either way, I'd
like to thank those of you that have come along for the kind and thoughtful
feedback.

Added to the schedule below, we may squeeze in one extra talk (stateful vs
stateless presented by http://www.3b-workshop.com/ Ian Godman ) and
http://herebebeasties.com Al 's topic this time is a suitably ambitious
gallery application. We'll probably have some time to help with people's
projects too, so feel free to bring along some kit and/or code.

Could our other speakers that wanted me to review their presentation
material please make sure I get at least an outline by the weekend so I can
be sure to get some feedback to you?

It'll be a year since I tracked down Al and proposed setting this event up
and so I will also be announcing some special news to celebrate our first
full year of
http://www.nabble.com/London-Wicket-Users-Group%2C-July-3rd---interested--p11129672.html
Wicket events and http://www.jweekend.com/dev/JW703/ jWeekend Wicket
training courses including 3 pre-paid licences for
http://martijndashorst.com/blog/ Martijn and
http://chillenious.wordpress.com/ Eelco 's http://manning.com/dashorst/
Wicket In Action MEAP in our draw this time and big discounts for our
anniversary course (exclusively for delegates at this event).

Again, I would like to thank Google for the great support (providing great
facilities and even Pizza for all our delegates) for our event. Visit
http://google-opensource.blogspot.com them for info on other interesting
stuff they are organising.

Regards - Cemal
http://jWeekend.co.uk http://jWeekend.co.uk

Here's an update on our June 4th, London Wicket Event at Google (more
details on our Wicket In Action draw etc ... in my original post, pasted
below):

http://faler.wordpress.com/ Wille Faler is going to talk about using the
Open Session In View pattern with Wicket (I've just been over his
high-level plan and this promises to be quite an instructive presentation,
covering some real-world/practical issues.

http://www.richard-wilkinson.co.uk/ Richard Wilkinson is going to show us a
Wicket Google Maps overlay panel.

http://herebebeasties.com Al Maw will be performing his usual magic (but
possibly on a slightly different scale ...).

Time permitting, I'll show you how to use Select and SelectOption when
DropDownChoice doesn't give you enough control (ie if you want each option
displayed with a different style). I'm also putting together a Wicket front
end to a Drools Sudoku solver (that I may commit back to the Drools project
later), but that will probably have to wait until our August (probably 6th)
event.

You know where to http://jweekend.co.uk/dev/LWUGReg/ register and
http://jweekend.com/dev/ContactUsBody/ contact us if you'd like to give us
a presentation too.

Regards - Cemal
http://jweekend.co.uk http://jWeekend.co.uk

PS Eelco, thanks for that. This does demand quite a bit more commitment than
we envisaged at first but as long as we're still enjoying it and getting
great, appreciative feedback we'll keep going here in London and maybe even
help sponsor something on a more international level when the time is right.
Any ideas are more than welcome. I am still keen to get some of the other
core developers to join us at some point - our guests would appreciate that
too.

Eelco Hillenius wrote:

I'm pleased to confirm that our next London Wicket Event will be held on
June 4th, again at Google's London offices.

We've been attracting a really nice crowd as well as encouraging and very
positive feedback/reviews. If you' like to come along register (early) at
 http://jweekend.com/dev/LWUGReg/ the usual place .

I expect we will have 3 or 4 presentations this time, most likely from Al,
myself and a couple of you that have already proposed some interesting
topics (remember we are always interested in hearing from you if you'd
like to have a go too). I'll confirm details, hopefully in the next few
days, when I have fixed the schedule.

We will have our regular free draw for Martijn and Eelco's Wicket In
 Action (MEAP).

Re: London Wicket Event - June 4th, at Google UK

2008-05-12 Thread jWeekend

Here's an update on our June 4th, London Wicket Event at Google (more details
on our Wicket In Action draw etc ... in my original post, pasted below):

http://faler.wordpress.com/ Wille Faler is going to talk about using the
Open Session In View pattern with Wicket (I've just been over his
high-level plan and this promises to be quite an instructive presentation,
covering some real-world/practical issues.

http://www.richard-wilkinson.co.uk/ Richard Wilkinson is going to show us a
Wicket Google Maps overlay panel.

http://herebebeasties.com Al Maw will be performing his usual magic (but
possibly on a slightly different scale ...).

I am still keen to get some of the other
core developers to join us at some point - our guests would appreciate that
too.

And again it is very nice of you guys to organize this, and of Google
to host. Thanks!

Eelco

I'm pleased to confirm that our next London Wicket Event will be held on
June 4th, again at Google's London offices.

We've been attracting a really nice crowd as well as encouraging and very
positive feedback/reviews. If you' like to come along register (early) at
http://jweekend.com/dev/LWUGReg/ the usual place .

I expect we will have 3 or 4 presentations this time, most likely from Al,
myself and a couple of you that have already proposed some interesting
topics (remember we are always interested in hearing from you if you'd like
to have a go too). I'll confirm details, hopefully in the next few days,
when I have fixed the schedule.

We will have our regular free draw for Martijn and Eelco's Wicket In Action
(MEAP).

Regards - Cemal

Wicket In Action - London Wicket Event draw winners

2008-04-13 Thread jweekend

At our London Wicket Events since February, we have been holding a draw for
http://chillenious.wordpress.com/ Eelco and
http://martijndashorst.com/blog/ Martijn' s Wicket In Action, which is
pretty complete now and a great resource for any Wicket developer; the
result of a great amount of work, expertise and dedication - thank you both!

The winners of the prize draw for the last 2 London Wicket Events (February
and April) are:

http://www.objectdefinitions.com/ Nick Ebbutt
   and
http://www.zoomf.com Richard Wilkinson

Please http://jweekend.com/dev/ContactUsBody contact us by Tuesday, to get
your licence code you will use http://manning.com/dashorst/ here , to get
the pre-paid pdf.

We expect our next event to be held on 4th June; Al I are working on
confirming this date (with Google) for those of you that have expressed a
need for maximum notice for travel arrangements and presentation preparation
time.

Thanks for the presentation suggestions/offers that are finally starting to
trickle in (it's taken us nearly a year to convince you no one bites). We
will schedule these in for our upcoming events, and again, we will try to
give you as much notice as possible and any help you may need as you
prepare. Any one else wishing to give a presentation can let us know
http://jweekend.com/dev/ContactUsBody/ here . Topics can be anything
(technical or otherwise) that relates to Wicket, and presentations can run
for from 5 - 60 minutes.

In the meantime, anyone who hasn't seen Al's latest offerings at the events
(the live presentations were greatly enjoyed by all present), Paint and
Image Cropper(!) can take a look http://londonwicket.org/ here .

Tonight's London Wicket Event - Finalised Schedule

2008-04-02 Thread jweekend

The schedule for tonight is as follows:

18:30 Start (and a slice Pizza if you're there in time)
Cemal Bayramoglu- Brief welcome, introduction and announcements
18:40 Ian Godman: Dojo and Wicket
19:30 Short break
19:40 Alastair Maw: Surprise topic (but I know what he's prepared, and I'm
looking forward to it).

Please drop us a note http://jweekend.com/dev/ContactUsBody/ here if you
want to give a short talk about something Wicket related, but you'll
probably have to hold off until next time.

We have a big auditorium, courtesy of Google again, and places are still
available (we're expecting about 30 people so far including a few hopefully
from Google), but please http://jweekend.com/dev/LWUGReg/ register (and
confirm) by 17:30 so we can give the people letting us in the right
information. We have still have several unconfirmed bookings; if that you,
please confirm or cancel using the link in the automated email you got when
you registered.

See you this evening.

With Google sponsoring Wicket meetings, I'm wondering if we might someday
see Wicket/GWT integration?

Dont see how wicket can do much there

Jonathan,

It's certainly good to have them hosting us and to have a drink with some of
the guys working there who have plenty of interesting ideas.
As for the love-child, I already suggested a name ... Gwicket; not very
imaginative maybe, but you've got to admit it sounds like a name you would
give some powerful framework.

Re: London Wicket Event - Wednesday evening at Google

2008-03-31 Thread Igor Vaynberg
you can make roundtripping easier. for example, you develop a login
panel that lets users either login or signup. a wicket component may
look something like this:

add(new LoginPanel(panel) {
  onLoging(String username, String password) {..}
onSignup(String first, String last, String login, String password,
String email) {..}
}

LoginPanel would extend some BaseGwtWidget which will make it easy to:
* include gwt module javascript into the page
* generate binding javascript that binds callbacks to said module's javascript
* create the callback urls with json? unmarshalling
* json marshal data to the gwt widget

just thinking out loud. some isolated very rich components might be
easier to build in gwt then with wicket's ajax.
