I use a lot of the 12" monitors, for the machines I'm giving away. The
resolution is crisp and they are very useable for word processing (which is
what I set these machines up to do.) I also like to use them for my test
monitors, when I'm working on machines. They really are handy to have and
use--they take up a lot less space than a standard sized monitor.

PPP problem fixed

Turned out to be much simplier than that. I turned the machine around, so
that I could reseat the cables. Tested it and it works again. This
machine is missing the ceramic piece that holds the cable connections
correctly. When I was fiddling around with the printer cable next to it, I
must have unseated it enough for the connection to fail.

Don't know if Hotsync still works, but I don't plan on using that every
day. I'll worry about that later *grin*!

Thanks again.

Nope, the modem wasn't moved. There's a option in Hotsync to choose Local
(you point it to the right port), modem, or both (it monitors both ports to
see if the device is on it.) I did doublecheck the cable to make sure that
the modem is plugged in directly. As I mentioned, it does complete the
handshake--it fails when loading PPP.

I tried changing it to open a terminal window to connect. It does not show
that it's connected, even though it seems to have dialed and connected
okay. The logs show that the server wasn't responding.

Nope, checked those and they were fine. I did add the IP address that was
shown in the logs. The two IPs originally in config are the ones my ISP
gave me.

Thanks for the help though.

PPP problem

2002-08-09 Thread Teri Pittman

I'm invoking the once removed rule, so I hope I don't get into TOO much
trouble!

My main Mac is a 6100/60 AV running 7.6.1. I use Open Transport & PPP with
a Supra 33.6 modem. Everything was working fine yesterday. Today, the
modem connects, goes through the handshake, says "Starting PPP" and then
eventually bails out, saying the server didn't respond. Since I'm
connecting to the same server to send this, it's not a problem at the
server end.

The only change I made was in trying to set up Hotsync to work with my Palm
on the Mac. I wound up using the printer port, but did have to try other
options to find one that worked. Hotsync is disabled until I turn it on.
When I started trying to figure out the problem, I found that PPP had been
turned off in extension manager. I turned it back on, but I have the same
problem.

Is it possible that I have some corruption causing the problem? Is
trashing the PPP prefs and reconfiguring the next step? Reinstall the
whole mess? None of the changes I've tried have made any difference--it's
like PPP doesn't start up. I'll dig around in the books I have to see if I
can find anything else to try but am hoping to hear from the experts first
*grin*!

But you do use drivers in that world. Most new drives come with install
disks and when you do the partitioning etc, that's when it puts in a
driver. I'll admit, it's not like the way they work in the Mac universe.

Here's what happened to me. I innocently chose "update" with FWB disk
tools. When I looked at it with another program, it had an apple driver
partition AND an FWB driver partition. It wouldn't recognize the Apple
driver partition any more, so Norton's wasn't working right.

I'm still working through this one, which will may mean reformatting the
disk, since I can't seem to get the Apple driver working again. You may be
able to take a look at the partitions and see exactly what drivers are
installed.

In Oregon, MS was trying to insist that any donated PCs had to be kept with
the OS they were sold with (i.e. don't put Linux on them!) AND, if you
didn't have the original license material, you had to purchase new licenses
and you purchased for everyone in the school, whether they used a computer

copywrite

2002-07-31 Thread Teri Pittman

Let's not forget that there are companies that buy up software programs
just to kill it. I ran into an interesting site, while looking up
information on Desqview. This was a DOS based program that provided a
graphical interface, before Windows took over everything. I have this
theory that PCs would really cook if we still used DOS, since the hardware
has been beefed up so much.

Anyway, there were a lot of comments from the folks who developed the
program, talking about the people who'd worked on it and how proud they
were of it. Program was bought up by the folks who owned QEMM (maybe
Quarterdeck?) and it was deliberately killed. There was a certain
bitterness about it--they really believed in what they'd developed. They
had copies of the program tucked away for download.

And the question becomes, who should copywrite really protect? Because
most folks think they're protecting the people who created the product, not
the company that buys it up. I can understand a company with a need to
encourage people to upgrade to their latest product.Does that mean that
people who want to use the old products have no rights? Shouldn't they be
able to purchase a legal license?

I'm with pickle on this one. I find the current copywrite laws way too
restrictive and I've seen how they inhibit the exchange of information.
I've seen the issue crop up on every damn list I'm on, no matter what the
topic.

Try nisus (www.nisus.com) You can get either the compact version or an

relatively foolish question

2002-07-06 Thread Teri Pittman

Okay, I gotta ask this, as I haven't found any information about this:
exactly how do DOS cards in Macs work? I have two of them now, one with a
286 chip and one with a 386 chip. I can vaguely remember one of these back
in college, that seemed to do emulation and was extremely slow.

Do they dual boot and you choose which OS to use? Do you need a second
monitor to see what's going on? It's not that I have a pressing need for
these, but I am curious.

I would assume it's an internal jumper as there isn't anything outside on
the case. Just the two ADB ports and the RJ-11.

It has a full set of function keys, which I thought was odd. And the

very noisy--has that clicky noise of the old IBM keyboards. Makes me feel

Does anyone know anything about the Datadesk Mac101 keyboards? Nice clicky
kinda keyboard that looks almost like a PC keyboard. What I'm curious
about is that it has a phone jack plug in. What's that all about?

(I'm assuming it's okay to ask about this on this list. I have had it
hooked up to both an SE/30 and a IIsi today!)

I popped the LC 575 board into a 520. Same error about 7.1, so I believe
that they have done the Resedit hacks, as the OS on the hard drive of the
machine is 7.6.1. It booted up fine with the 7.5 boot disk--no bus error.

The hardest part about this one is going to be figuring out what this kid
did and at what point he gave up. I've downloaded the Resedit hacks
mentioned in the FAQ.I'll put this all on a floppy, along with Resedit
and see what's been done. I should be able to copy over a useable 7.1
system folder and will go on from there.

I can just hear that kid, "The FAQ made it sound easy, but they don't tell
you what to do when you screw up!!" *grin*!

This is another fine mess.......

2002-06-26 Thread Teri Pittman

I think I have one of those cosmic ironies on hand. I wanted a Color
Classic to try and turn into a Takky. Was given one that clearly had been
messed around with. Wouldn't boot as it said OS 7.1 would not run on this
system. Won't boot from a 7.5 boot disk as it gets a bus error. (This may
be the keyboard connection, as I had a few times when it wouldn't boot
without unplugging the keyboard.)

So, I set up all the 7.5.3 disks, made a new boot disk and decided to try
again. Same thing, only it didn't like the boot disk (said to use Disk
Tools 2 instead). So I pulled out an LC520 motherboard & tried that. Was
able to boot from the disk, and copy the system folder over from that to
fix the hard drive. It will boot on its own with this board in place.
Tried to install 7.5.3 and it choked. "What the hell is this?" the
installer asked. So I am assuming that I will probably need to hack a bit
with I Wish I Were and possibly install 7.6.

The board I took out? It's an LC575 from the looks of the boards on the
link from Gamba's site. I don't know if this board is useable or not.
I'll read up on this, but I am assuming that this is a hardware issue and
may not be fixable?

Any opinions/ideas would be welcomed. I'll continue to read up on this and
plot my next move. It runs nicely with the 520 MO but the OS is so
stripped down that it really needs to be reinstalled.

Hmmm, I'm not much help with cable modems. I do know Eudora though. How
do you have your mail server set up in Eudora? Did you use a name or IP
address? If you used a name, you might try using the IP address instead.
Somewhere along the line, it's not resolving the name.

I've been using this a bit, since I have some LC520s that had it installed.
It does seem pretty stable. I like 7.1 too. I did an experiment this
weekend. I have a IIsi that has 17MB RAM in it. Decided I wanted to see
what it would do under System 6. Found a little 40MB drive that had it
installed and booted it up. WOW! It really does rock. I don't know that
it's convinced me to go out and install it on all my 68k machines, as I have
applications I want to run that won't run under it. It's worth playing
around with, if you have a machine for it.

That's what I need to do. I hadn't thought about using a RAM disk for the

Already loaded it on the 6100 and it does seem to work a bit faster. Will
try the RAM disk and see if that speeds it up.

Slightly OT, as it concerns a PowerMac 6100:

I noticed today that the white connector that fits around the pins on the
modem connection is missing. Bare pins. It seems to work okay (as you can
tell by this note). I have spare parts machines, but haven't figured a way
to pull one off. Is it safe to use without it? Any easy way to pull one
off another machine?

Actually, I want to go with a more traditional network setup. And I may
eventually add the PC to the mix, so I'd like a system that would let me go
that route. I am pretty sure I can come up with a hub/router/switch that
will work. Will need to pick up transceivers & cabling and I'll be set.

Thanks again.

I know. There are a few things I wished they'd added, like what the AAUI
connectiods look like (found that at another site). And more info on cables
would be good too.

As long as the transceivers will enable me to connect to a standard Ethernet
hub, I should be able to figure out the cabling on my own. And I'm still
curious about the Fallaron EtherWave transceiver. The description said that
it would function like a hub.

Thanks for the help!

They have AAUI jacks, the sort of squiggly looking ones. I found a page
with pictures of Mac connectiods, so I'm sure that's what they are. The LC
520s came with cards. I have a 6100 AV that has builtin AAUI. Will have to
come up with a card for the IIci--I'm not sure if the cards from the 520s
would work. And I picked up a Duo 230. Haven't looked at it carefully
enough to know what it has, as I haven't tested it yet to make sure it
works.

At this point, a 6100 AV, IIci, Duo 230, Quadra 640, and at least one LC
520. I also would like to hook up one laser printer. I'm thinking 8
connections might be enough.

AAUI networking

I'm trying to understand the basics on AAUI networking. I think it's
starting to make sense. I do have a question about hubs. Does it make more
sense to go with something like the EtherWave or to go with a standard hub,
using transceivers? Right now, I'll be working with ancient Mac to ancient
Mac. I'm not sure that I want to bring the PC into this *grin*!

Asante card

2002-05-28 Thread Teri Pittman

I've got a question about an Asante card. I pulled this out of one of the

numbers are 94-22ab0d, 024-09-A. It has one connector for a phone jack
and another connector that is the same shape as a monitor plug in. I'm
figuring NIC or modem, but thought I'd check with the pros first.

Teri's case is finally resolved. Problem was a bad fork in the Open
Transport Apple Talk Library. Don't ask me how I found it. (Well, okay, I
upgraded to 7.6.1, which didn't fix it, installed OT/PPP, which didn't fix
it and finally scanned the disk with Norton. One of the things it couldn't
fix was that file, which it told me to reinstall.)

Luckily, the IIci, running on simplier technology was able to connect and
download all the files needed. I even managed to do some work on the stack
of Macs upstairs. Next project will be to get the laser printers working
right. I think that's a matter of having the right printer driver. But,
tomorrow is another day *grin*!

Same thing here, same file. I used Norton and unchecked invisible. Then I
deleted it and replaced it with a fresh copy. That file seems to be okay.
I think I'll be fine, as soon as I figure out how to get OT/PPP on the Mac.
( I think it will involved moving the IIci down, hooking it up, and
pulling a copy of the file from my ISP. I'll upload that this morning.)
I'm finding that some of these Macs don't like those floppies with a
plastic slider, instead of metal. And the floppy drive on the PC is down,
so TransMac is out.

more learning experiences

2002-05-25 Thread Teri Pittman

I tried a disk swap today. Took the 250MB drive from the Power Mac and
swapped it with a 1GB drive from an LC520. I did a disk image of the stuff
on the Power Mac before I swapped. The Power Mac disk was OS 7.5, the LC
520 disk was 7.6.1.

Things seemed to go okay. When I tried to pull stuff over from the disk
image to the new disk, I wasn't able to pull the system files. So I have
been upgraded to 7.6.1. Here's the problem: I can't get Free PPP to work.
I managed to fix Mac TCP (which had a problem with an invisible file). The
control panel for Free PPP shows that the extension is not installed. It
is, of course. I've tried taking it out of the Extensions folder,
restarting and putting it back in. Tried turning it off in Extension
manager, rebooting, turning it back on, rebooting, with no effect. Tried
reinstalling from the backup copy I had. No difference. The older version
of PPP doesn't work either.

The only other thing I can think of that might affect it is that Open
Transport is not currently installed. I could probably pull the files off
one of the other LC520s, if that's the problem. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

That was it. They're 1MB SIMMs. I turned off Virtual memory, put those
SIMMs in Bank A and got 4MB total RAM. Virtual memory must have masked it
somehow.

A couple of questions that hopefully won't take us OT: At what point does
one become jaded at playing with these machines? Are Power Macs ever as
much fun?

Thanks for all the help!

More on the RAM

2002-05-24 Thread Teri Pittman

Since Gamba asked, here are the details. The label on the package says
"VCI 4MB 70ns 30 pin memory SIMM single"
It's a 2 chip simm, that sort of half height size. Back of the chip says
HB56G18B 8A 9241 XX

It dawned on me while looking at these that there could be one more
explantaion. We assumed these were 4MB SIMMs. It's possible the label
means 4MB total. If they were 1MB simms, it might make a bit more sense
(although it wouldn't explain why it doesn't read 4MB total when I have
SIMMs in just one bank.)

I'm off to turn off virtual memory and play around with these again.

Yep, but the total RAM figure includes the 16MB on disk. I'm starting to
think it might be useful to turn that off completely and see if I get

I thought it might be that it's still using the original settings and hasn't
refreshed since I added the RAM. This is OS 7.1, by the way. Unless
someone managed to pop the sticker on the package and replace the chips,
they are 4 MB sticks. The package looked untouched. I thought that maybe
the chips were bad, so I wasn't too surprised when it didn't pick them up
the first time. Just can't figure out why it's not showing a change with
four of the original sticks gone.

RAM puzzlement

2002-05-24 Thread Teri Pittman

I've been playing around with a RAM upgrade on the IIci. I was given 4
4MB, 70ns sticks for it. It currently shows 8MB installed with what I
assumed were 1MB sticks. The documentation I have says this model does not
have any on board RAM.

So, I started trying different combinations, to see if it would register
the new RAM.
4s in Bank A, 1s in Bank B
1s in Bank A, 4s in Bank B
4s in Bank B, nothing in A (chimes of death)
4s in Bank A, nothing in B

I tried zapping PRAM twice after every test. Every time, it showed the
same thing, 8 MB onboard. I also made sure that I had 32bit mode turned
on, no difference.

I can understand that possibly I didn't have something seated right on my
tests. I can't understand why I'm always getting the same results. It
seems like I would be showing 4MB on at least one of these tests. It also
seems that the top configuration would be the correct one. If 70ns RAM is
a bad speed for this machine, it seems like the RAM wouldn't register at
all. Am I missing something here? I could test this RAM in another
machine, but I am interested in why I keep getting the same results in this
one.

My experience with this is not in the Mac world. I use a digital recorder
with transcription software. This turns the digital recording into a file
that can be read using Via Voice software. I could be wrong, but I believe
you will need DSS software to transcribe your recording into a format that
other software can translate.

After reading Pickle's post, I did exactly that. I took out the adapter,
stuck it in an external case and hacked around with the jumpers till I
found a setting that would let me book with it as an external, without
causing confusion. And I contacted the guy I got them from, who'd found

around with it.)

Which I would do, except that these are in all in one cases. It looks like
I'll have to take out the sled that holds the motherboard, to even get to

I pulled the drive out and it's a 730 MB Quantum Lightning drive. Looks
like you set the SCSI id by changing the jumper settings. Like most
jumpers, it's not altogether clear which jumper to change (although it does
have the different combinations on the drive.) It plugs into the drive
cable using a slot type (rather than a pin type). I'm not sure I can find
a cable that will plug into it.

I thought I might be able to change the jumper settings to a different
setting and use an external as a master boot. I might be able to get into
it that way. I suspect this is a 16MB RAM chip, as that is what is in the
other machine they left the RAM in. I do think I have At Ease on one of
the machines. I'll take a look at that and at doing a PRAM zap. (I can't
do one with the drive in, since it has the keyboard disabled on boot.) If
all else fails, I'll just do a clean install and be done with it.

Tried all the quick, logical passwords I could think of. At work, we
normally set these up with things like "train" or "trainer" for passwords.
If this was actually the server, they'd probably have a less obvious password.

I have one totally dead one, two with the ? floppy displayed at startup.
The rest seem to boot up okay. They've pulled the RAM out of them, so I'll
need to put in more RAM before I hand them out. Couple have 1GB hard
drives, which is nice. They make great CD players *grin*!

Yep, I'll take a look at that next. I have an external drive I could use
to set up a ghost image for these machines. That's the plan anyway. I'm
pulling in the 7.5.3 disks today and will probably take it from there.
Would be nice to see what's on that drive, but reformatting it will be okay
too.

Thanks for the advice.

network admin help needed

2002-05-19 Thread Teri Pittman

I picked up 10 LC520s yesterday. Very nice machines. These seem to have
been used at a youth camp. Most of them are set up for a network. I was
able to boot up with extensions disabled and take off the network stuff on
all except one. This one has any keyboard sequence disabled on bootup. It
doesn't seem to want to use a floppy, as it spits them out. I can't get to
the finder without using an admin password (which I don't have). I suspect
this may have been the server.

Is there any way to get past this network login? I've read that
reinstalling the disk drivers will overcome the network admin stuff, but I
don't think I can try that with this one, given that it won't read floppies
until logged in. Am I stuck just reinstalling the OS? Or will I
completely have to reformat the drive to clear it? Right now, I'd just
like to find out how much RAM & how large a HD it has. I can't even get
that far with it.

TIA

hardware heart transplant

2002-05-10 Thread Teri Pittman

Once again, advice needed:

I have the nice IIci that I've mentioned before. Bought a Quadra 700, since
it was cheaper to buy the machine than parts. I thought I would use this
for the hard drive, as a means to back up the software on the IIci.

Well, the Quadra has a bad floppy drive. So, I am thinking of moving the
hard drive from the IIci to the Quadra along with the floppy drive. This
would give me the Quadra case, a faster motherboard with more memory (20MB
as opposed to 8) and I'd still have the Quadra hard drive to use for
backups. The IIci drive has OS 7.1 currently on it. The Quadra has 8.1,
which I really like. It also has some nice disk tools and troubleshooting
programs I'd like to keep. I would probably leave it as is for a bit, and
set it up as a backup after I get everything working right.

Any hints/warnings/tips? Any reason why this wouldn't be a good idea?

I don't know, I haven't worked my way up to that era yet *grin*. I can tell
you, having paid money for a couple of these ancient machines that there are
a few folks buying them. Probably just not enough to put a dent in your
collection.

Let's see, I have a Classic, a IIci and next a Quadra. I figure I'll get a
PPC and an iMac and I'll be set.

Well, the answer to that is simple. The hardware isn't worth the effort.
Most of the hardware in PCs doesn't hold up that long (with the exception of
IBM, who turn out nice stuff.) It is possible to find some stuff, like Dr.
DOS & Desqview X. You certainly won't find any Windows products available.
I think you find more folks in the PC world who piece together their
computer from parts, than you do in the Apple universe.

I'm also sure that the progression of Apple OSs makes perfect sense, if you
were there from the beginning and saw each version as it came out. It's a
lot more confusing trying to pick it up.I didn't expect such a radical
difference between 7.0 and 7.1 (although I was warned!)

I ran into that when looking at the specs on Lowendmac. It said that it was

to make some sense out of the Mac OS numbering scheme.

What prompted all this, is that one of my favorite Palm software companies
came out with a desktop version that runs on OS X. Plans are to finish the
Windows desktop next, then support OS 9 in the Mac world (maybe). It seems
to be hurting sales. I'm wondering if they would have been better off
supporting OS 9 and OS X at a later date. Which lead to the deep thoughts
about which company did a better job at supporting legacy machines.

It's not hardware....

2002-05-06 Thread Teri Pittman

I have a quick question and don't want to drag the list too far off topic.

It seems that Apple has had at least three instances where they've
developed a new operating system that simply won't work on their older
hardware. 7.1 seems to be the first, followed by PPC only (8.2?), followed
by OS X. That's only happened once in the Windoze world that I know of
(Win95). Am I right about this? Is this one of the things that has
affected sales?

Thanks!

Re: software strategy needed

2002-04-30 Thread Teri Pittman

That's kinda what I'm thinking. I might play around a bit with 8.1. I
guess another alternative would be to pick up a larger hard drive, copy
everything over from the IIci and keep the one with 8.1 installed, in case
I want to use it at a later date.

Am I correct in assuming that I could network these and drag the IIci hard
drive to the icon for the Quadra to completely copy the drive?

software strategy needed

2002-04-30 Thread Teri Pittman

I am picking up a Quadra 700, to keep the IIci company. I have some great
software on the IIci that I want to keep using. I don't have the original
disks and don't have a great way to back it up. My thinking was to mirror
the IIci disk on the Quadra and use the Quadra as my main machine (more RAM
and faster).

The IIci was upgraded to 7.1.3 and I'm happy with that. The Quadra comes
with 8.1. I'm concerned that some of my programs won't run on that OS.
So, what would be the most harmonius thing to do? Upgrade the IIci to
7.5.3 and downgrade the Quadra to that? Make them both run 7.1.3? Keep
the Quadra at 8.1 as long as the programs run okay when copied over? I
spent most of the day looking for comparisions of the OSs but my best
information is the bit on Lowendmac. IIci only has 8MB of RAM, while the
Quadra has 20. They both have 250MB hard drives.

Speaking of, are there any sites that really talk about the different Mac
OS versions? I ran into some sites where they loved 8.1, others where it
caused nothing but trouble. At this point, I'm mostly concerned about
having a decent backup of this software, until I get a chance to play
around with it. I will eventually upgrade the programs that I actually use.

Thanks for the help!

The fonts seem to be packed inside of Suitcase 2.0. I had this program set
up on OS 7.0.1 and I could use Suitcase to view and check out fonts. After
upgrading to 7.1, the extension for Suitcase doesn't work. The computer
locks up while trying to load it. This makes sense, since Suitcase seems to
load like Chooser or Finder--it shows up when you click on the icon at the
left menu bar.

I tried copying the extension over to the classic Mac. It loads okay there
and does show the full list of fonts. It can't actually FIND these fonts,
so I believe that they still exist on the IIci, packed away so that they
can't be accessed by anything but Suitcase. The fix to recover them seems
to be to upgrade to Suitcase 2.1 which was designed to work with OS 7.1.
That's what I'm going to do--I think I've located a copy of the software to
fix it.

It looks like whatever Postscript fonts I had were located in the System
folder and I moved them to the new Fonts folder after the upgrade. The
missing fonts are probably True Type fonts. Once I have Suitcase upgraded,
I should be back in business.

I checked the system folder backup and do not seem to have a Font folder at
all. Also took a look at the Suitcase extension, which is 108K in size.
That doesn't seem large enough to hold fonts. I think what I am missing
are the True Type fonts. I'm still looking into this, but am not seeing
anything that looks like the missing fonts.

I do have one other option. I have an old Mac all in one. I do have the
Font/DA mover for Suitcase that works with OS 6. I might try putting
Suitcase on a floppy, moving the whole thing over to the old Mac and taking
a look at it on that machine. Any other ideas are welcome! The IIci seems
to run a bit snappier on OS 7.1. I'd just like to find where those fonts
are hidden. Might download Resedit and take a look at the Suitcase extension.

7.1 font problem

2002-04-28 Thread Teri Pittman

When I did the upgrade from 7.0.1 to 7.1, it seems to have made Suitcase
2.0 non-functional. I cannot get the extension to load. I found the
postscript fonts in the extensions folder in the system folder. I seem to
be missing a bunch of fonts that I know were installed and viewable under
Suitcase.

I am checking my backup to see if these fonts were in the earlier font
folder. If they aren't, I'd like to go back to 7.0.1 long enough to use
Suitcase to move those fonts onto the hard drive (it seem weird to think
they could all be kept in the extension but that may be the case.)

Can I temporarily move the 7.1 system file to a floppy, either boot with
the 7.0.1 disk or copy my old system file back long enough to do this? Or
am I causing an huge mess that will result in nothing working? I'm
considering rolling the upgrade back completely, if there's no other way to
fix it.

upgrading system software

2002-04-23 Thread Teri Pittman

A couple of random upgrade questions:

I have downloaded the System 7.1 disks and would like to upgrade from
7.0.1. I'm planning to try to do a backup first, since I don't have the
original disks of the software on the computer. (I do have the original
System 7.0.1 disks).

It looks like StuffIt can be used to backup across multiple floppies. I
haven't had a chance to try this yet, so I thought I'd ask if anyone has
used it for this. I was able to copy many of the files onto floppies, but
the main program file was generally too large. Having the whole thing
compressed would be a huge help.

The files for System 7.1 are disk images and are the right size to fit on a
floppy. I know there's info online about using disk images, so I'll check
this out before I try the upgrade. What I am not finding is good
information on exactly HOW to do the upgrade. It looks like the Installer
will take over the process, if I manage to get them onto the floppy
properly. I do have the Disk Copy program installed now. If you know of
any online documentation that would be useful, please let me know. (This
is one of the things I find irritating about Mac books. They have lots of
stuff on the basics and reviews on programs. Damn little on upgrading the
operating system, or properly deleting and cleaning up a program.)

Thanks for the help! Couldn't have gotten it online without it!

For the record, Open Transport isn't an option when working with floppies.
It's too big. I'm trying to get a decent browser installed, as I went with
MacWeb (again, because it fit on a floppy). It's interesting to get my

download from there.

Not until there are more drivers and it requires less maintenance. Never
could get the modem to work properly, as it had a Rockwell chip and there
wasn't anything in the Linux world to support the compression. I could get
it to run at 2400 baud under Seyon, but that was it.

Sorta similar to what I'm going through configuring PPP this time, although

internet connectivity round three

2002-04-20 Thread Teri Pittman

I have MacTCP installed. I installed PPP 2.5, but it kicked and complained
that I didn't have OS 7.1. Trashed it, downloaded & installed PPP 2.01. I
still can't open a connection. When I try to open the TCP panel to check
the settings, I get a system -39 error. Modem seems to be plugged in and
the phone jack works fine.

I am tempted at this point, to start the Mac without extensions, trash all
the above and reinstall TCP & PPP again. I used the instructions linked at
Gamba's site to configure TCP. I do have my ISP's IP address and I set the
rest of it as per the instructions. I did not use any modem init strings,
so I could give that a try. Modem is Supra Diamond 33.6 and should use
pretty standard inits. I also tried using a slower speed on the modem, as
that will sometimes do the trick. PPP does not seem to see the modem at all.

Any ideas?

Ah, that makes sense. I'm trying something like that now (putting stuff it
on the Mac and putting the files on without decoding first.)

To tell the truth, I was doing this from my main PC, and the floppy seems
to have died. So I transferred to the laptop, then to a floppy. Figured
there were just too many steps in that process. It does sound like I can
cancel the windows download of Stuff-it to unstuff the mac version *grin*!

2002-04-20 Thread Teri Pittman

Well, I'm pretty confident I could configure this, if I could ever get the
programs to install.

I'm having to use TransMac to put files onto a Mac formated floppy, so that
I can get them onto the Mac. I'm trying to get PPP & MacTCP. When I copy
them, they show zero bytes, which is okay because they seem to actually be
copying something. When I put them on the Mac, it says it can't read them
because it doesn't know what program they were created by. Bottom line is
that I can't get any actual control panels that let me configure anything.
I also suspect that the extension is not being read correctly. Any tips
would be appreciated--I'm finding good info on configuration but not on
what's causing this problem. IIci, OS 7.0.1

I'm gonna try iCab, since my website is in CSS and I'd like to be set up so
I can view it. The memory issue is just for this month--I'll be adding
more RAM next month and maybe a larger HD. I will try Ram Doubler in the
meantime.

Thanks for the help!

need internet connectivity help

2002-04-19 Thread Teri Pittman

Mac--IIci with 8MB ram, 250 MB hard drive with about half empty, OS 7.0.1
Modem--Supra external 33.6
Software--free ppp 262, mactcp

Do I have the right software to set this thing up? I read through Low End
Mac most of the day and am still unclear, mostly about whether this
software will work with this operating system. I also downloaded the 7.5.3
upgrade, but would rather not install that at this point, if I don't have to.

Modem seems to work okay (I tested it with a Hypercard dialing program and
it does dial out okay.) It sounds like I can connect without Open
Transport, but am not sure if MacTCP is enough to do the trick.

Thanks in advance.

Re: MY FIRST SYSTEM CRASH

2002-04-18 Thread Teri Pittman

Couldn't you take the hard drive from the headless mac, make that the
primary on the crippled mac, hook the hard drive from the crippled mac up as
drive number two and then copy the files to fix it? You'd need a SCSI
terminator, I'd think. You would also need to change the drive numbers, so
it would boot from the right drive.

I'm certainly not an expert, but my radius card works fine with an Apple
17" multi-sync on the IIci. In fact, everything's working so fine that I
don't have any questions right now. (Just wait till the modem & cache card
get here!)

basic networking question

2002-04-10 Thread Teri Pittman

I am curious about what networking topology Apple used for Apple Talk. Is
this star, bus, ring, or something completely different.

Having wasted a year of my life getting a CNE, I try not to dig too deep
into networking topics. The discussion does make me a bit curious. If
there are more good sites on basic Apple networking, please let me know.

Would be the same thing for an intranet. It resolves the IP address to the
name.

If you don't have DNS, you'd better know the IP address you're trying to
connect to. You need it to resolve the name. I've seen lack of DHCP cause
problems with email, although I can't remember exactly why right now.

Yet another IIci question

2002-04-07 Thread Teri Pittman

Okay, while we're all out happily hunting accelerator cards.

I take it that the best way to add a modem to a IIci is to get an external
serial port type. Am I right or am I missing something? I do know that
externals are generally more stable, but have used internals in the PCs
I've owned.

Also, about adding a CD, I'm guessing I would want an external SCSI CD.
I'm still waiting on this computer to arrive, but I understand space is
pretty limited inside.

Oh yeah, hard drive upgrades (it has 280MB presently). I take it that this
would be set up with multiple partitions, since OS 7.1 can't handle larger
disks.

I'm also a bit confused about when to use Mode 32. I am still working my
way through the LowEndMac site, so feel free to point me to documentation
on that site.

Thanks again!

Thank you, Gregg. That's pretty much what I thought I was reading (except
I wasn't aware of the OS versions involved). I'm starting to think the
wisest course for this IIci is to max it out on RAM, play around with it a
bit, and keep my eye out for a cheap Power Mac or G3 or 4.

> You *do* realise how much those cost, right?

Well, at this point, I'm surfing ebay *grin*! Since I keep reading that
this is a good upgrade, I'm trying to learn as much about it as I can.
First upgrade will probably be more RAM, as it only has 8MB on board.

So the 7100 uses 72 pin SIMMs? I haven't really checked the specs on those
yet. The IIci was set up as a desktop publishing computer and it has quite
a few programs installed on it. I would need to make sure that they are PPC
compatible, right?

I do try to read up on stuff first, so I won't ask too many stupid
questions. I tend to do better with software than hardware though *grin*!

Another IIci question

2002-04-05 Thread Teri Pittman

Okay, this question concerns accelerators and cache cards. I've been
reading about accelerator cards for the IIci and it sounds like the Daystar
Turbo 601 would be a good match. I'm seeing NuBus and PDS cards. I
understand that these are different type slots. Is one type preferable over
the other? The information on Low End Mac seems to indicate that you can't
have both cache & accelerator cards on the system. Is that correct? Given
the fact that there seem to be Quadra 700 motherboards available, would I be
better off to get one of these & replace the original motherboard, instead
of using an accelerator.

Feel free to point me to a website that might have more information. I'm
just killing time until it gets here *grin*!

monitor question

2002-04-04 Thread Teri Pittman

I'm buying a IIci with a Radius video card. I've been told this machine
used to run a 19" monitor. I'm looking at a 17" apple monitor that is a
multiscan. It's my understanding, from what I've read, that I should be
able to use this monitor. Am I way off? Should I be looking at a 14" RGB
apple monitor instead?

Thanks for you help--it's my first Mac and I'm sure I'll have more
questions.
