Re: Disappointed in do not disturb functionality of iPhone five
I have a feeling this is just the beginning of something which could turn out to be pretty sweet. Not only would more flexible scheduling be nice, but location-based DND would be fabulous too. It's worth noting that Do Not Disturb has some distinct advantages over using the mute switch. Save for the bug if speak notifications in the lock screen is turned on, VoiceOver is completely silent when you receive a notification when in Do Not Disturb mode. But in my experience if you use the mute switch, VoiceOver behaves exactly the same as it always does. That is to say, at the very least you'll hear the time announced when the phone wakes up. For example if I know I have a court appearance tomorrow at 2 o'clock it would be very useful for the phone to have a function in which I can schedule the program to block calls during that time. Then the following day if I have a meeting at 1 o'clock I can set the phone to ignore calls for that time as well. It could be a checkmark option when scheduling an event in the calendar. Therefore you would never have to worry about your phone accidentally being left on and going off in an important meeting. When you schedule the meeting you would have already told your phone to ignore calls for that time. I don't know if anyone can develop an application which would do this so we don't have to wait for the iPhone six for this functionality. Any recommendations?
Howdy everyone! Well, I'm happy to say that I have my new IPhone 5, and it is pretty cool, so far! I finally capitulated and went to the ICloud, and I'm glad I did, as it made data transfer smooth! Now, I need to know if there are any good recommendations of tutorials or books. I want to learn more about Siri, because right now, I can talk to her, but when she asks me questions, I don't know how to answer her and have her listen to my answer. I also don't know if she did what I asked her to do regarding things like emails and such. So, if there are any good Siri tutorials out there, let me know, please. Re: Disappointed in do not disturb functionality of iPhone five
After your harping about it, I decided to test the muting function. Though I have muted my iPhone a few times last week, I did not receive any calls or messages during those times. I muted my iPhone. I locked the screen. I called my iPhone using a landline. Quite nicely, the caller ID was not announced. However, When I hung up before voice mail activated (here in NZ, it costs to call a mobile), my iPhone screen became active and VO announced the time. After the requisite time elapsed, VO announced screen lock. Initial conclusion, muting of speech needs some more work. I plan to write an email to accessibility suggesting that, when the mute switch is active, VO should not talk if the touch screen comes on automatically. Of course, if the touch-screen is engaged by a finger, or if the power or home buttons are pressed to bring up the touch-screen, VO should automatically start talking. In other words, another very nice feature which could use some tweaking. Thank you Daniel for pushing until I understood what you have been trying to point out. Why would you think that? Just playing with the current app from TiVo, I can pull up the guide of currently or upcoming shows, browse the content I have saved on my TiVo or iPhone and look at what I've asked TiVo to record for me. It all looks accessible so far, but I've just started playing with it, since I just got a TiVo the other day. From the features I've read up on, I can get information on the show I'm currently watching on TiVo, have the TiVo switch to play a show being broadcast or that's already been recorded, set up shows or seasons of shows to be recorded in the future and so on. I'm sure I may run into inaccessible areas of the app, and there may not be features the app has access to, but it looks like there's quite a bit I can do so far. I also assume the app that's being developed here would give even greater access and accessibility, and I would assume a greater commonality in look and feel between different devices. Re: Problem with list archives in Google Groups
Ah, I see. I didn't see any of that in your original email. Do you have images turned off by any chance? I've seen web sites in the past display similar messages when they thought you were coming in with a text based browser. Also, isn't IE9 out? Could it be that Google Groups takes advantage of some features in the latest IE, Firefox and Chrome that IE8 may not have? BTW, I am running the latest Firefox and Chrome, and I haven't come across this message in either browser. Also, since Google does develop it's own browser, I wouldn't put it past them to recommend that browser over the alternatives. RE: Television Remote for Visually Impaired
Hello Ron, I have know idea what the Bell Five is, I assume it's one of their new receivers. I have a Bell 9242 receiver which I purchased about 4 or so years ago. In any case, if your receiver has network connectivity, i.e. if it can connect to your home network either with an Ethernet cable to yor router or to your WiFi it should work fine. Once it's connected, Just look for the Bell TV app on the app store and give it a try. I am in Canada and have a Bell Expressvu satellite receiver which is hooked up to my network. However, Bell already provides their own app which is quite voiceover accessible and which allows me to see what's playing, select a program and set up the PVR function of the receiver for recording stuff. My Sony LCD TV which is about 5 years old is not capable to be connected to my WiFi and I think there would be a lot of people for whom your app would be more or less useless because they have stuff that isn't network or WiFi capable yet. I think having a solution similar to the RedEye remote is better as long as you can find a hub that is reasonable in price. I haven't tried RedEye yet because the hub is $200, but I probably will try it this winter. I wrote to them and they claim it is Voiceover accessible, they are interested in getting feedback and told me that through the retailer they offer a 30-day money back guaranty should it not be to my liking. I have tried one solution, the RE Universal Remote, which uses a 30-Pin IR Dongle and while it works to some extend, it is not as Voiceover friendly as it needs to be and what's more, I am not at all interested in something I have to plug in to my phone because it is too inconvenient and I also found, and this would apply to any app no matter how well it worked, that simply the fact that I have to pick up my iPhone or iPod Touch, unlock it, go into the app is slow by nature especially if all you want to do is turn the volume up or down and I just don't see how I would ever use it over the remote that came with my device. The same goes if maybe you are watching a DVD and you want to pause it because the phone is ringing, I guess if it was an iPhone app and assuming it would controla DVD player which you said it doesn't at first, there could be a setting to automatically Pause when the phone is ringing just like music playback stops when the phone is ringing. Anyhow, there are many ifs and all sorts of issues. I like the idea of a universal remote rather than having 4 or 5 remotes on my coffee table, how cool would it be if Logitech put simple voice output into one of their Harmony remotes. Obviously you can just turn it on, but having the ability to integrate this into the calendar as an option would be pretty slick I have to say. Re: Any recommendations?
Congratulations for your new iPhone! I don't have a link to a tutorial but can answer your questions 1. To answer siri you have to tap the listen button. Generally the focus of VoiceOver is there by default so you can just try double tapping anywhere on the screen. You can also just press the home or the remote button. It is noteworthy that if you interact with siri when vo is off she automatically goes to listen mode after asking you something. Also, many have reported an issue with screen locking prematurely when interacting with siri via remote button and thus terminating conversation. 2. Unfortunately when siri sense something, other than her assurance that she will do so there is no conformation sound. Some hit the home button immediately after she says she's sending it and get to hear the usual sending sounds. I just have faith in her after having experimented with checking my send messages. In the list archives there is a post about a good blog entry about what you can say to her.. Re: BT keyboard oddity
Hi, It makes sense that after turning it off with the keyboard that you would not be able to turn it back on with the keyboard. This is because the voiceover command, VO-H that you used by pressing it 3 times quickly, simulating pressing the home button 3 times quickly, is a voiceover command. I do not believe that any voiceover commands are recognized when voiceover is not running. So therefore of course the phone recognizes that you are pressing its actual home button when you go over to the phone and press it, however without voiceover actually running, it can not recognize VO-H as a press of the home button because voiceover is not running. RE: at bat issue
I've experienced this bug ever since the iOS 6 update for this app came out. As soon as one leaves the app by pressing the home button, the audio dies. The one way I've gotten around it is by twice pressing the home button to get to the app switcher and from there, press the home button to get to the home screen. That way, the game's audio feed continues to play in the background. I reported this bug to MLB and they wrote me back over the weekend asking to call, but I haven't had time to do so. RE: Television Remote for Visually Impaired
Hi Sieghard, Bell FIBE is the very latest way of receiving your signal through telephone line and not with a satellite dish. Right now, I think its only available in Montreal and Toronto but very quickly expanding. It's a special modem with router that the TV box connects to. What type of device do I have to plug into the TV box for the IPhone to work with and does it plug into the Ethernet port of the box? Ron From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Monday, October 01, 2012 4:33 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Television Remote for Visually Impaired Hello Ron, I have know idea what the Bell Five is, I assume it's one of their new receivers. Ron From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, September 30, 2012 7:45 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Television Remote for Visually Impaired If it connects directly via wWiFi this means a lot of older devices that are not network attached can't be controlled. Problem with iPhone five for iOS six calendars invoice over
I am not sure if this is an error on iOS six or the iPhone five itself. However when in the calendar application voice over does not read which calendars are selected. The only way a person knows one of his calendars is selected to be displayed is if the events in that calendar are displayed. For example take a look at the phone application. If you have groups of contacts in the phone application voice over reads the name of each group and then the word selected after it to indicate which groups of contacts will be displayed. Voiceover does not read the word selected after a calendar name to show you which calendars of events will be displayed. Hope that makes sense. James H. RE: Wi-fi Syncing of IPhone and Computer?
Hi Pete, Syncing over WiFi generally works for me, but it can definitely be a bit flaky and it's also slow. I know this may not help you much. One thing you have to check is that you have enabled syncing over WiFi in iTunes and I believe you may have to hook up your phone by cable, make sure it's enabled and do a tethered sync first. Of course the problem could also be that I am using a PC with Windows 7 and you are using an inferior computer *smile*. Aluminum versus Glass iPHone, Just a Comment
Hello Everyone, I was in my local A T T Wireless Store assisting a friend in upgrading her iPhone 4 to an iPHone 4 S. While we were waiting for a representative, I took the opportunity to explore iPHone 5, again. You know what? NO matter how much Apple tries to spin it, the iPHone 5 feels like a more cheaply made device than the 4 or the 4 S. Say what you will but there is something special about that glass finish that is lost with iPHone 5. Perhaps most people keep their phones in a case so it matters little to them but to me, what put iPHone a cut above the rest has been lost with iPhone 5, in terms of tactile satisfaction. Also, from a visual perspective, the aluminum, to my poor old eyes anyway, lacks that special sparkling gleam that made me so glad I own an iPhone. For the first time in my wireless life, I am so happy I do not have the latest and greatest. As is always the case, this is just my opinion so please be kind (Smile). Re: digit eyes
Hi Paul. It's a bit like that, but it actually hunts for the barcode on the item, I'm not sure exactly how oMoby works. The barcodes for a lot of the k-cups are located on the tops of the boxes. Here's some info I wrote up awhile back about digit-eyes for another list I'm on. Perhaps it will help? Begin quoted message: Hi all. Just been playing around with Digit-Eyes today a bit, and here are my impressions so far. When you first launch the app, you are put on the Scan button. Before scanning anything though, I would highly recommend going to the help section of the app and reading their tips on scanning, as it can save a lot of time and grief. While locating barcodes and UPC codes on products can be difficult, once you find them, the rest works quite nice. Again, for assistance with this, see the help section in the app or on the Digit-Eyes website. Essentially, you will position the camera over the device and try to take your best guess as to where the barcode is located. After selecting the scan button, begin moving the camera from about 8 inches and with each snap of the camera, raise it another inch. Also, sometimes rotating the product can help. Note that it doesn’t matter what orientation the barcode is in, the app simply needs to recognize that it has found a barcode to work properly. When the app has located the barcode, the phone will vibrate, indicating that you don’t need to move the camera around anymore. Digit-eyes recognized all 5 of the items I put in front of it. Once you have scanned the object and the barcode is recognized, the phone will speak and show in braille what the object is. Moving to the right one option will give you the more info button, assuming there is more info in the database, which will give you more specific information about the product such as ingredients’, manufacturer, serving size if applicable, calories, a recipe if appropriate, etc. Moving to the right one more option lands you on the option to Google the product where you can find even more info, along with prices from nearby retail markets. The app will jump directly to this button if there is no further info in the databases about this product. This function is ladled as web search. Moving to the right one more time gives you a button where you can report wrong descriptions. I have never gotten one of these, though my experience with this app is still relatively limited. I have been told by those who have contacted Digit-Eyes that the customer service people are very prompt and respond positively to feedback. Flicking right one more time will land you on the Scan button again. QR Codes (Quick Response) While not the original intent of the creation of QR codes, Digit-Eyes allows you to sign up for a free account on their website, and you can then print off whatever ladles you want. The most typical way to do this would be with address labels that you can purchase at any store that carries mailing products. The challenge with this is cutting the codes out correctly, and if you do not have enough site to do this, sighted assistance may be required. You can also have Digit-Eyes mail you the QR codes already cut up and ready to go, but this costs more money. Please see their site for details on pricing. The QR code allows you to enter a short text description of the item of up to 100 characters. Once the QR code is affixed to whatever you want to be labeled, you can then scan for the code and it will read back the result and also display it in braille. You can even purchase special labels from Digit-Eyes which are washable, meaning that you can attach them to clothing and store whatever info you want on the tags. They must be sewn in to the clothing. The website indicates that these are good for 50 washes, but I have no info as to how long they last. The website also says that most dry cleaners will sew these labels for someone for .25 a peace. There is an audio portion of this app as well, but I didn't bother with it since I mainly use braille. From what I have read and been told by others though, this portion of the app is also very easy to use, but that the speech from VoiceOver can sometimes interfere with the recording. The paid version of Digit-Eyes is available for $19.99 on May 21, 2012. The free version only allows for the reading of QR codes that have already been created, or that you create on Digit-Eyes. The paid version gives you access to the UPC, EAN, and other barcode databases. Please note that this app will use a small amount of data when looking up an EAN or UPC code. The QR codes do not require any data usage. For more info, please see www.digit-eyes.com On 10/1/12, Paul Ferrara paul.ferr...@insightbb.com wrote: Keurigs do rule; discovered several great coffees, no weaklings either. Hi Mark, I took a look at an iPhone 5 the other day at one of our local stores as well and I feel exactly the opposite. The 4 and 4S are beautiful devices and I wonder if the fact that the 5 is so noticeable lighter makes it feel cheap to you. I think a lot of people think of something solid as being of particularly good quality. However, I think the iPhone 5 being as thin and as light as it is is a beautiful phone and it feels fantastic to me. On an emotional level I so wanted to go back to my computer, sign in to my Apple account and order one, but I still resisted because I know it doesn't make so much sense from a technology point of view since I have a 4S. Re: Aluminum versus Glass iPHone, Just a Comment
Hi, I totally agree. I have the 4S and 5, and yes, its lighter but, it feels solid in the hand all the same. I actually like the fact its not slipping from my grasp like my glass backed 4S did from time to time. haha. And after a week of using a 5, you honestly forget how light it is. Unless your constantly using your 4 or 4S to continuously compare the 2 phones. My only regret is the fragility of the aluminum finish. But, there is really nothing to do about that but to get a case. Anyone with a macbook pro, knows how after a while, those scratches really start to show through. So, I wouldn't throw my 5 into a pocket with my keys. :) JMO. Re: Aluminum versus Glass iPHone, Just a Comment
Interesting. I read a review not too long ago, and I may be getting my facts slightly backwards, but the reviewer swore the Samsung Galaxy S3 was a bit smaller and heavier than the HTC X1 making it seem like it was more solidly constructed. He later posted an update stating that the HTC X1 was actually slightly smaller and a bit heavier. This lead to a tangential discussion on the factors that go into the perception that one phone is better constructed than another. I think the point here is that it's pretty highly subjective, and cell phone companies are probably using some design specialists to try to convey solid construction while at the same time making these devices smaller and lighter. I live in a small town up in northern BC and it's probably going to be a couple of years before we get LTE up here and for me that would actually be the least important reason for upgrading since I don't use much data. Re: Problem with iPhone five for iOS six calendars invoice over
James, this is a bug in iOS 6 and not the iPhone itself. The issue has been reported, so hopefully APple will address this in 6.1. On Oct 1, 2012, at 2:14 PM, James Lockwood lockwoo...@gmail.com wrote: I am not sure if this is an error on iOS six or the iPhone five itself. James H. Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S
Hi all, Anyone who has ATT without a shared data plan is likely aware they cannot use Face TIme over the 3G network. Although I do not believe I would use Face TIme for general conversation, I believe there are cases where it may be valuable. Obviously there are services such as Skype which apparently ATT does not block. Now with that said I decided to file a complaint with the FCC which is the regulatory agency for all things related to communications such as wireless etc. in the United States. I decided to file the complaint because there is no technical reason for ATT to block Face TIme over the 3G network and especially if they do not block Skype. My understanding is that Verizon Wireless does not block Face Time and mor does Sprint. I believe that ATT has taken this position for one of two reasons and one of which is surely monetary. So, why do I bring this up? Because I wanted to let anyone who has considered filing a complaint that ATT will respond. The best part is I have received an initial verbal response which is exactly what I expected. THe conversation can be best summed up as to bad. There was absolutely no point in having a conversation with ATT because despite the fact I pointed out the obvious fact they do not block Skype or any other VOIP service or placed any special restrictions on such services, they have blocked Face Time. I even pointed out how Face TIme could be useful in some circumstances for an individual with a visual impairment which incidentally is a true statement. So, I anticipate that although ATT has taken this position for now they will continue to face a great deal of pressure from individuals and groups to change their position. The good thing is there are other avenues and options. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Are there some places not served?
There really isn't anything wrong with Weather Underground; I'd wait a while before I buy another app. Even if it didn't cover your town, it would still cover something nearby. Do you have location services turned on? Even if not, i think it would ask if it could use your location. But I'd be a little patient rather than looking for something else immediately. Re: digit eyes
This is very good info; thanks. Paul -Original Message- From: Scott Davert Sent: Monday, October 01, 2012 2:43 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: digit eyes Hi Paul. Mark, I am just wondering if you actually feel this way or just wanted to start a topic of conversation. In my opinion the 5 beats out the 4s hands down. Having the phone just that little bit lighter is heaven! I really did not think that it would make that much difference, but I was wrong. I will admit that I did purchase a Ballistic case for it as I like to keep my stuff as pristine as possible for the resale value. That said, if you do go naked I think that The new type of glass strips at the top and bottom make a huge difference in how slick the phone is while holding it. As far as quality goes, I think that you are mistaken in your assessment. I have help a S3 and quite frankly it feels like a plastic piece of crap that would break the first time you dropped it. I think that having held the phone for such a short time and noting the weight difference you may have come to the conclusion that it felt cheaper. But after having used mine for the last 3 days I would have to disagree. I think it feels just as well built as the 4S and having the extra ram and boost in cpu was well worth stealing my daughters upgrade! Keith On Oct 1, 2012, at 2:41 PM, M. Now that this is mentioned in every document I read about what you can do with SIRI I tried it again and at first it seems OK, I tell SIRI the relationship and she asks “Do you want me to remember that so and so is your brother”. I tap Yes and then get the following message: The addressbook you are using does not allow me to change this. I am using 2 cloud services for my contacts. For personal use I use Windows Live Hotmail and for business use I use Microsoft Office 365 which is full hosted exchange. Adding relationships for contacts I have in either contact list results in that same message. I am curious whether somebody who uses Google for storing contacts gets the same message because if that is so Apple is offering a SIRI feature which is useless for just about everybody except those who use an Apple @me.com email where I assume this will work. I am not syncing my contacts via iCloud although I guess I could try that, e.g. turn of Contacts in the Hotmail account and turn it on in iCloud. I am not sure if this will screw things up and if anybody has ideas, suggestions or experience with this I’d appreciate any feedback. It’s not like being able to tell SIRI who my Mom or my brother is would completely make my day, I can still go into Outlook and put in “Mom” or “Brother” as a nick name and then I can say “Call Mom” and it works. I am also mystified by what is supposed to be a new ability of SIRI. I read an example where they say “So and so is my favourite comedian”, can’t remember what name they used. So, I just told SIRI “Shania Twain is my favourite country singer”. SIRI replied “I see”. Then I asked “Who is my favourite country singer” and SIRI said “I don’t know”. Does this mean I have to add Shania Twain to my contacts first not withstanding that my contacts can’t have relationships associated with them? I wish Apple would put some useful functionality in SIRI like “Redial the last number that called me” or “Turn Bluetooth on” instead of coming up with gimmicks that don’t work for anybody who is not using Apple services. this But Regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. I had a 3gs without a case and a 4S without a case (i still have the 4S). The 4S dropped twice accidentally but actually not when I was holding it and it wasn't harmed at all though i realize it could have been. I have always been puzzled by all the comments about how slippery the phones were as I never have felt insecure holding mine; i usually hold in one hand and perform actions with the other and am not good at two-thumbs maneuvering across the keyboard. At any rate, i've always liked holding them in my hand and have had no catastrophes. That isn't at all to say that that shouldn't happen to people; I'm just saying that I've loved holding mine that way. i just now put a very simple case on my iPhone 5 and if they made this for the 4S I would consider getting it to use in certain situations. But I think I will always love the feel of the naked phone in my hand. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Mark, You're not alone. As ugly as I think the 4S is, I do think it feels a lot sturdier, a man's phone if you will. I don't know that I would call the iPhone 5 slippery, but no doubt the degree of durability took a toll to accomplish the degree of pizzazz Apple was shooting for. To call it fragile may be laying it on thick, but all this to say that for a 4S user, the hardware is not a motivator to upgrade. Just a little love for us 4S users who are looking on in envy at those with the latest and greatest. We'll thumb our noses when we switch sides and upgrade next year. It's just a natural cycle. By the way, I noticed a vast improvement when iPhone 5 caller uses the new Ear Pods, as well. This weekend, I went to the Apple store and purchased a pair for my iPhone 4 S. Those with whom I have spoken, via my new Ear Pods report a definite increase in both call volume and quality as a result. I am amazed at the outstanding voice call quality of the iPhone 5 as heard from my end. Simply stated, I was unable to tell that they were not on a land-line. Regardless of the hardware difference, iOS bugs, etc, the iPHone 5 is, in my opinion, a superior product in terms of wireless call quality. Bravo to Apple on this feature. RE: Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S
FaceTime is available over Verizon, and so is skype. I don't have Verizon myself, but I FaceTimed with someone over Verizon LTE today. I personally think what ATT is doing is complete crap, and something needs to be done about it. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Scott Howell Sent: Monday, October 01, 2012 5:50 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Face TIme over 3G for those who live in the U.S Thanks Mark, but I would still like for someone on VZW to confirm if Face TIme is available and also if anyone has found that Skype does not work over the cellular network because it is blocked. Everything I have been able to find indicates Skype is not a problem over 3G. On Oct 1, 2012, at 4:48 PM, M. Taylor mk...@ucla.edu wrote: Bravo, Scott. I will file a complaint, as well.
