Re: Good color identifying apps
Neil, Do keep practising, this really is an excellent app and I've used it for a few years now on a four for S and our six.indeed, with the six I am being challenged!I got so used it before and before S their size et cetera, but now I'm finding I am a little less accurate with six being a bigger phone with more latitude for misalignment.as far as true colours are concerned, it is a moot point because colour really varies according to light.A shadow will not only change the colour to something darker but it may change it intentive make it more blue on more red et cetera.I have found the CamFind is best at saying blue red brown green rather than going into euphoric descriptions of multiple shaded colours.Plus, I took a shot of our Christmas tree and it said green Christmas tree with Christmas decorations and Santa Claus.so, for complex pictures it is really useful!finally, if you want to identify a product if you can get some label into the camera view you have a very good chance of it being identified but when you take these shots you have to try and get the camera to focus primarily on the object you wish to identify rather than within a general scene. So, close-up! good luck! Sandy Sent from my iPhone On 5 Jan 2015, at 16:08, Neal Ewers neal.ew...@ravenswood.org wrote: Well, I just installed camfind and it is, so far, about 50% accurate. Re: IPhone 5s, And IOS 8.1.2 Editing Text
iOs always seems to delete to the left. Cursor is always beyond the last item read, pretty well regardless of direction. I mean, if you're flicking down to work along the text, the last word or letter will then be behind, or left of the cursor. If you flick up to work back through the text, the cursor will be to the left of the last thing spoken. That is more comnfusing when you're trying to back up to correct it by deleting something. This can perhaps be proved if you double tap on a text field and it says - start of text, or end of text. Go to start of text, cursor should be against the end and thus, left of the first character. Try delete from there, it shouldn't delete anything as there is, well, nothing to the left of that point. I used to find navigation confusing when you flick up and down to wiggle the cursor either way and it seems to repeat the same word or character. But it would if it says what it skips over to move to the left, or right of it. On my PC, the cursor goes in front of the letter that I will delete when pressing backspace and if I press delete, it will delete the character that I am on but VO seems to do it differently on an Apple device? Re: How About Sending Apple Some Love
Hi, Very well said Mark! I couldn’t agree more with you there. Having said that though i’ll have to admit something that probably will make me sound negative in this thread and i’m truly sorry for that. Ok here goes: I can for the life of me not get tha hang of Apple maps. I’ve probably used it too few times. Is there maybe somewhere i can listen to a podcast going through the use of Apple maps? The reason why i never got around to using Maps was that people complained about its inaccuracy and missinformation at the time it was released so i figured i wouldn’t touch the thing until it got fixed, and apparently it is now, so i’d love to figure the beast out. /Krister 6 jan 2015 kl. 04:07 skrev M. RE: Apple TV Question
Hi, I have both the HDMI and the digital audio connected to the Apple TV. The digital audio goes to the Samsung Sound bar and the HDMI goes to the Samsung sixty inch Television. So I can do audio from the computer which is both my ACER and an HP laptop or I can do audio from my iPhone 5S via airplay through the Sound bar without the TV being on. I Can also do it through the Apple TV via the HDMI via the television without the Sound bar being on but the sound is not nearly as good. I can also do any Apple TV app such as Netflix or Hulu Plus without turning on the television simply by turning on the sound bar and the Apple TV. And then controlling everything via the Apple TV remote. I discovered all of this totally by accident after having all of this connected this way for a year. I should have known better being that I worked at a flesh and blood radio station back in the eighties for years when they still required you study and get a physical paper license to be a DJ. Re: Apple TV Question
Richard .. No .. you can then actually get sound out of both places .. however I find there is a slight lag and get a tiny bit of echo .. strangely the echo only seems to be on dialogue... What I have done is ... HDMI - Apple TV to TV HDMI - Dish receiver to TV HDMI - Blue ray DVD to TV Digital audio - Apple TV to Sound bar Digital audio - Dish receiver to sound bar Digital audio - DVD player to sound bar Actually the connections all run into a splitter then into the sound bar. This way I can get the audio from all inputs out through the sound bar, my sound bar has only 2 inputs. I also can just get it from the TV as all of these are connected to the TV via HDMI. Never have to turn the TV on to actually watch TV or a DVD. Only need the TV when watching video content from Apple TV, and then a lot of times after it gets going can turn off the TV and continue listening via the sound bar. If you want to contact me off list .. that is fine: pdlloga...@gmail.com and I can hopefully help you out. I just setup this last month... Re: How About Sending Apple Some Love
I’m still waiting for more bug fixes with VoiceOver in iOS 8 before upgrading and sending a love letter. I continue to use iOS 7.06 and am waiting for more bug fixes before upgrading. Taylor mk...@ucla.edu: Hello Everyone, Okay, I am completely and totally in love with my new iPhone 6 Plus running 8.1.2. It's really that simple. The phone is so responsive to commands, the battery life is amazing, relatively speaking, and the versatility seemingly limitless. I have not truly enjoyed conversing on a mobile phone since the early 90s when phones were much larger. However, with my 6 Plus, I actually prefer to hold the phone up to my face, during calls, as it feels like a normal-size receiver. The sound quality on the 6/6 Plus is awesome, also. I could go on and on about the marvelous properties of the 6 Plus but doing so is not the purpose of this post. Although I never dreamed it would happen, I have to say that I am now using the iOS Apple Maps more than any other, off-the-shelf software GPS navigation solution. Yes, I am even liking it more than A T T Navigator. Please note that this does not include Seeing Eye GPS as it provides a level of feedback that is unparalleled in that it provides cross-street announcements that sighted travelers do not require. Earlier today, I sent a letter to Apple thanking them for making their iOS Apple Maps so very VoiceOver accessible. I wanted to acknowledge that unlike so many other mapping services, they did not forget those of us who are blind or low vision. At a time when so many of us, humans that is, are so fast to point out flaws and so slow to offer compliments, I wanted Apple to know that I owe a great deal of my ever-increasing independence to their consideration and efforts. So, the reason I am posting is to invite you to send Apple some love by sending in some positive feedback about whatever you like about their products. For example, today I submitted comments about how much I am truly enjoying the iOS 8.1.2 Apple Maps app via VoiceOver. I use the video but for the sound I prefer the optical coming out of the Apple TV to the Sound bar and it's wireless subwoofer. Ok, I used to could enter my ITunes password with no problem, I would tap the cursor above the edit field, and then I would attempt to type having grade II turned on which used to work I tried it the other way too no go can't enter with my braille sense, I can navigate my screen perfectly, it's only entering text that is a problem. I can deal with this with most things using dictation or a bluetooth keyboard, but I am not sure you can dictate a password nor how to say like cap a letter then not cap some and such. I have always found entering text with the display more cumbersome than the bluettooth keyboard, but I still prefer to use the sense only if I can get away with it for most tasks so disappointed and wondering why I can no longer do this. It's a play / pause button. E.G. when music or a video is playing press it to pause it then press it again to resume playback. Re: automatic downloads
Hi all, Let me chime in by saying this. If you have apps turned on, it means any newly purchased apps from one device will be automatically downloaded to the other. So say you have apps turned on your iPhone and you purchase an app through your PC, the app will download to both your PC and iPhone over wifi. On 6 Jan 2015, at 18:05, Lori Dent loriand...@ohiohills.com wrote: Hi Sieghard and all, When I go into settings and go to iTunes and app store and under the automatic download heading I do have updates turned off so that I will get notified when there is an update to manually download the apps I want. Wouldn't apps be the same thing as updates because updates is allowing me to update my apps I already have to a newest version of what ever app is being updated. Re: IPhone 5s, And IOS 8.1.2 Editing Text
The cursor on iOS devices can be thought of as always being between two characters. If you're moving backward, your cursor is before whatever VoiceOver reads; if you move forward, it is after what you hear. That's why, if you move back a character and then forward a character, you hear that character twice, once as you pass it one way, and again as you go back the other way. Deleting always moves left. So, if you move forward a character and then delete, you will erase the character you just heard spoken. If you move back a character and delete, you will erase whatever is left of the character you just heard, since your cursor is now left of the character and you are deleting left. I hope this makes sense. RE: Good color identifying apps
Hi Neal, for what it’s worth, I’ve tried just about every color detection app I could get my hands on and have yet to find anything that even comes close to being acceptable. That was on my iPhone 4s and 5s. I haven’t done this on my 6 plus yet but honestly I probably won’t bother unless there is some sort of major breakthrough. I found them all to be very lacking in terms of accuracy. Hopefully things will change with better optics. It would certainly be wonderful to have an accurate color detector on our phones. Re: Good color identifying apps
Colour always looks different depending on the lighting and shading in the area. The person's brain makes automatic shifts in order to recognise the colour. Apps are not able to do this. They always report exactly what they detect. They do not make the human mental adjustments. Camera optics will not help with this factor. While the phone is still prompting you to set things up (that is, you're not at the Home Screen), hit the home button three times quickly. This will turn on VoiceOver and let you complete the process. Note that, once it is set up, you'll need to go into Setings General Accessibility Accessibility Shortcut and set it to VoiceOver. This is automatic during setup, but is not so once setup is complete. Using Maps, A Comparison on Two Devices
Hello Sieghard and Everyone, I have changed the Subject line to more accurately reflect our discussion. I was thinking about convening a group conference call to discuss the features of Apple Maps if anyone would be interested. Sieghard, you know, the problem with email is that, while so much can be expressed with merely the written word, so much more cannot be expressed. Allow me to clarify my previous comments: I do have access to an iPhone 64GB 5 S running 8.1.2. In general, the OS feels less responsive to me on the 5 S than it does on the 6 Plus especially where Safari is concerned. This is definitely true with regard to screen refresh rates. Without going into details, simply put, I cannot reproduce many of the iOS 8.1.2 bugs, many have reported on-list, on my 6 Plus; not the least of which being the Notifications Clear All Button problem. However, I can reproduce many of these bugs, including the Notifications Clear All Button problem on the 5 S. Sieghard, with your comments in mind, I decided to do a side-by-side comparison of the Apple Maps app on both the 5 S and the 6 Plus, today. I took both of the phones, simultaneously, on two routes, one walking and one in a vehicle. The following are my conclusions: Please note that before I began my tests, I closed all previously opened apps on both devices and performed a system reboot. During the test, I held one device in my right hand and the other in my left. 1. Assuming that there are no interruptions such as incoming phone calls, SMS messages, etc, to my surprise, the app performed identically on both devices. 2. Any interruptions during navigation, such as incoming calls, SMS messages, etc caused some navigation delay on the 5 S. Also, screen refresh rates and VoiceOver response time was noticeably slower on the 5 S after experiencing said interruptions. 3. The battery drain on the 5 S was significantly greater than on the 6 Plus. Finally, I have decided to upgrade my 5 S to 8.1.2. Navigating with Apple Maps
Hello Christina, I have changed the Subject line to more accurately reflect our discussion. Christina, I had little success with Maps in iOS 7.x. So, my comments relate only to Maps in iOS 8.x. Question: When you ask Siri to navigate to a specific place and she does, is she accessing apple maps? Answer: All things being equal, yes. You wrote: Otherwise, I've tried to use apple maps to take a walk in my neighborhood and then ask apple maps to take me home and I just cannot get it to work at all. My Reply: I know exactly what you mean. I experienced a similar frustration during my first 4 attempts using Apple Maps. The problem is that the program is working but, as VoiceOver users, we don't realize it's working until we understand how it's working. Once that concept has been grasped, the app is one of the most simplest tools in the OS, especially for VoiceOver users. Once I understood it, after about 2 hours of failure, that is, I laughed at myself for being so, to use a word, blind. The app is almost too simple for its own good. As a blind person, I was not expecting an off-the-shelf software GPS navigation solution to be so simple and straight-forward. You Wrote: Then I can't figure out how to use apple maps to find out where I am in my neighborhood. My Reply: Apple Maps will definitely give you the nearest street address of your current location. You Wrote: I wanted to learn the layout of my neighborhood. Re: Setup New Phone
As far as I know, it happens during initial setup. Whether you get to that setup by resetting, or turning on a new device for the first time, shouldn't matter. The iPhone 6 does have an A8 processor in it while the 5s has an A7 processor in it. Second, Apple Maps now uses Tom-Tom as it's mapping source so its accuracy rivals that of Google Maps. Third, in my opinion only, version 8.1.2, in general, and Apple Maps, specifically, does not perform as well on the 5 S and earlier models as it does on the 6 series. The difference to me at least is astonishing. Keep in mind that while I did not install 8.1.2 on my own 5 S, I did use it quite a bit on those with which I have access and was not that impressed. Finally, as I really don't like Apple Maps 7.1.2, when you have access to iOS 8.1.2, please send me your contact info, off-list, and I will be happy to walk you through the Apple Maps, so to speak. Using the app is so simple once several key concepts are understood. In fact, the Apple Maps app is the simplest and most accurate off-the-shelf software GPS interface I've ever used on iOS. Hi, It is possible to do this. Firstly add a second location whether you're at your former current location or not it needs there to be two locations in the app. Then make sure all audio playing apps are closed out if they were not closed you might need to exit out of weather radio and come back into it. Once back in Weather radio two finger double tap on the name of the location will bring up an alert screen giving you different items you can choose one of which will include delete. RE: some air travel questions
Hi Dean, I am in Canada and I am quite happy that the Air Canada app is very accessible for online check-in before my flight. I usually book with reward miles, either the Canadian Air Miles program or the Aeroplan program and neither of them has apps yet which allow for actually booking a flight from a mobile device. Both websites can be navigated but you do have to be pretty proficient with the Jaws cursor. Anyhow, for actually booking flights I have been very happy with Expedia. I have just used it to book a flight for my wife from Manila, Philippines to Vancouver and I also used it about a year ago for booking a flight from Hong Kong to Manila and prior to that for some in-country flights in Thailand. I have my information and credit card information stored as part of my account information and it's really a breeze to use it. The very last screen is a bit tricky as you have to agree to their terms and conditions and it's some sort of slider you have to drag up to 100%, but if I remember correctly a double tap and hold and then a slide to the right will do the trick. I have used Kayak in the past, but it's been some years. I do, however, think it was quite accessible as well. I used the United Airlines app 2 years ago when I flew to Maui via Los Angeles, but just to track flights and be notified of delays and so on. I agree with Alan that Flight View is very accessible and I usually prefer it now if I simply want good flight tracking. For Hotel booking, should you need that, Expedia also works well or you can use either Booking.com or Hotels.com. I have done some work with Booking.com and they were very responsive and made some very good accessibility improvements. Hotels.com seems to be impossible to reach regarding this and while the app is useable, it does have some unlabeled elements and you have to get used to it a bit. I'd use Booking.com except that I travel a fair bit and Hotels.com has a rewards program where if you book 10 nights with them you get 1 night free and since otherwise prices are pretty much the same that is a nice little bonus. RE: What's the button on the right hand corner on the apple tv used for
When you say using your phone to setup Apple TV do you refer to controlling your Apple TV with the phone? If so, then you will have to download Aple's Remote app which can do that. You can, however, also use a bluetooth keyboard with an Apple TV and as far as I am concerned this gives you the best experience especially if you are setting up accounts like Netflix, Youtube and so on for the first time which means you will have to enter your email address and password or maybe you want to type in a search term quickly to maybe find a movie on Netflix. I have a Logitech K811 which supports up to 3 devices and which is particularly suited for this purpose. I have it paired with my 5S, my wife's iPod Touch and the Apple TV and all I have to do is press F1, F2 or F3 depending on which device I want to use it with. You have to set up a bluetooth keyboard on your Apple TV in Settings and I think it's under General and then bluetooth. Via iTunes would be the short answer. It would help if you gave a bit more information especially how the music on your iPhone ended up on your iPhone since really the only way to get it there if it’s not jailbroken would have been with iTunes or if you bought the music on your phone from iTunes and it downloaded to your phone. RE: How About Sending Apple Some Love
Hello Krister, First let me say that, from a VoiceOver perspective especially, there is a big difference between the iOS 7.1.2 and the iOS 8.1.2 version of Apple Maps, the latter being much better and more streamline in almost every aspect. And the best part is that one need no vision in order to play it like a fine guitar. Re: How About Sending Apple Some Love
Mark, Thanks for sharing all this info. I have been waiting for my iPhone 6 plus for a couple of weeks now and I am quite nervous about whether I will like it or not due to the size. I keep imagining this giant slab of metal against my face when talking on the phone. LOL! I wanted the extra battery life and the image stabilization on the camera and am willing to give it a whirl. :) I have to get a new purse though. LOL! I have never been able to figure out apple maps. When you ask Siri to navigate to a specific place and she does, is she accessing apple maps? That is the absolute most I’ve ever been able to do. I only do that when someone is driving me somewhere. Otherwise, I’ve tried to use apple maps to take a walk in my neighborhood and then ask apple maps to take me home and I just cannot get it to work at all. Then I can’t figure out how to use apple maps to find out where I am in my neighborhood. I wanted to learn the layout of my neighborhood. :( Anyways, if you know of a good podcast for apple maps, please let me know. RE: How About Sending Apple Some Love
Hi Mark, I would be quite interested in your walk-through of Apple Maps as well and I'm sure others are, so please do post it online or, if you do a review or Podcast on some place like Applevis let the list know. What I don't logically understand is why Apple Maps on a 6 Plus running 8.1.2 should be a much better experience than on a 5S running 8.1.2. Apart from the larger screen there is little difference between the two phones as far as I can tell when it comes to the components which effect Apple Maps. You said yourself that you did not have 8.1.2 installed on your 5S. Regards, Sieghard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of M. Taylor Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2015 9:13 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: How About Sending Apple Some Love Hello Krister, First let me say that, from a VoiceOver perspective especially, there is a big difference between the iOS 7.1.2 and the iOS 8.1.2 version of Apple Maps, the latter being much better and more streamline in almost every aspect. And the best part is that one need no vision in order to play it like a fine guitar. You may send Apple feedback via it's feedback portal at:

RE: automatic downloads
Hi ori, You may want to read through my first message again as I explain this there. Turning off updates will take care of downloading updates automatically, if it is turned off that won’t happen. Turning off Apps just means that if you buy an app on another device it won’t automatically download to your iPhone. This includes buying apps via iTunes on the computer or maybe you have an iPad or iPod Touch. If, for example, you have Apps turned on and you buy let’s say Camfind on your iPad, it would also automatically download to your iPhone. The same applies to music and books. If you don’t have more than one iOS device and if you don’t buy stuff via iTunes it really doesn’t matter. If you want full control whether anything is downloaded to your iPhone then just turn everything under automatic downloads off. But I also was wanting to know under the same heading do I also turn off apps or do I leave it turned on? Wouldn't apps be the same thing as updates because updates is allowing me to update my apps I already have to a newest version of what ever app is being updated. Re: Does anyone use the A D T security pulse app
When they came to show it to me, a couple years ago, it worked with their iPhone. I had them enable Voiceover on their phone and at least the basic functions worked. YMMV, as they may have a newer version of the app now. Thus, my question. Thanks for any help. Neal -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Hi folks I see there is an app update for facebook. Are there folks that have already done this update? I've become careful in doing app update because of accessibility problems afterwards especially with the facebook app. Regards Davy -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list.
