Subject: Re: Want to be certain erase phone

Tracey, as this 9 to 5 Mac article I've pasted below illustrates, wiping your
iDevice of data is more complex now than before.

If you’re thinking of selling or trading in your current iPhone ahead of the
iPhone 6S’s release, you probably know that you’ll need to wipe your device
before a buyer can use it free and clear. Prepping an iPhone for resale used to
be almost as easy as hitting a “reset” button in the iPhone’s settings menu.
But over the past few years, the process has become more complex thanks to new
security, wallet, and cloud-dependent features such as Activation Lock, Apple
Pay and iTunes in the Cloud. Completely removing all of your personal items
from your iPhone — and your iPhone from Apple’s servers — requires extra work.
Today, I’m going to walk you through the process of thoroughly scrubbing your
iPhone prior to resale. There are 9 steps to take to make sure your device is
cleaned up and ready to sell to its next owner. Here they are…
[1] Erase All Content And Settings. The first, easiest, and best-known step in
wiping your iPhone is found within the Settings app at the bottom of the
General menu: click on Reset, then “Erase All Content And Settings.” (I’d
suggest taking this step only after using iTunes to do two complete, encrypted
backups of your iPhone to your computer. If you’re planning to move from iPhone
to a non-Apple smartphone, follow Apple’s guide to deactivating iMessage before
erasing your phone, as well.)
You will be prompted to enter your iPhone’s passcode, then told that “this will
delete all media and data, and erase all settings.” If you press the Erase
iPhone button, iOS will ask you for your iCloud account password to “erase this
iPhone and remove it from your [iCloud] account.”
You’ll be surprised at how quickly the iPhone is wiped — as soon as you’ve
entered your password and hit erase, you’ll get a notification email on your
account’s other devices that Find My iPhone was disabled, and it should take
only a couple of minutes for the wiped iPhone to display “Hello” and “Slide to
Set Up” text. Is the erasure secure? Well, all of the iPhone’s memory is
protected using AES-256 encryption, and hitting the Erase iPhone button
destroys the encryption key. Several security companies have tried to offer
‘secure erase’ tools that more aggressively scrub the iPhone’s memory, but
Apple has shut those tools down as ‘misleading,’ noting that the encryption is
effectively unbreakable. Hitting the Reset button leaves the former contents of
your device all but completely impossible to recover by a subsequent owner. But
you’ll be able to get everything back from your computer’s encrypted iTunes
backup, should you need it.
[2] What About Activation Lock + Disabling Find My iPhone? As shown above, you
can manually disable Find My iPhone by going into the Settings app’s iCloud
menu, pressing the Find My iPhone “On” button, flipping the Find My iPhone
switch to off, and entering your iCloud password. But if you use the Erase All
Content And Settings feature above, this step is automatically handled for you
when you enter your iCloud password at the end of the process. Either method
will disable your iPhone’s “Activation Lock,” the security system that allows
you to locate, remotely wipe, and send signals to an iPhone no longer in your
possession. Any purchaser of a used iPhone will expect you to have taken this
step (or more wisely, the step above) before selling your device.
[3] Apple Pay/Credit Card and Touch ID Fingerprint Wiping. If you’re using an
iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, or newer iPhone, erasing your iPhone will
automatically purge whatever credit cards and fingerprints you’ve stored in
your iPhone. (Even attempting to disable fingerprint protection for your device
will prevent it from storing cards for Apple Pay.) You will probably receive a
collection of emails from your banks noting each “Virtual card” that has been
“deleted from Apple Pay,” and you may also receive notices of the card’s
deletion from your Apple Watch. If you want to manually remove individual cards
or fingerprints, the Settings app’s Touch ID & Passcode menu handles prints,
and the Passbook & Apple Pay (iOS 8) or Wallet & Apple Pay (iOS 9) menu handles
cards. But even if

Somehow, my Amazon is set for mobile pages, which means I can’t buy a Kindle
book I wanted. I have tried on iPhone and on computer and signed out and back
in again to no avail. Cookie files on this computer are not available to me,
tried to open them and it won’t do it. This Windows 7 was messed up after
cousin installed it and other programs. Not even considering Windows 10 right
now.

How can I get the main page back so I can make the purchase I wanted?

I know, I am the person with the really off the wall questions lately.

Newbie Apple Pay question

2015-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
I have never used Apple Pay, only read about it. I am intrigued by the notion
of paying for something from your lock screen. On the other hand, it seems
awfully insecure. Say someone steals your phone and walks into a store. As I
understand it, all you have to do if you have wallet from the lock screen
enabled, is walk up to the register and hold your phone near the special NFC
reader, and presto. Your credit card is charged. Surely, there is something
more to it, something I am missing.

iPhone 5 shows as 5S in my account

2015-09-27 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Soon, hopefully, I'll be trading my iPhone 5 in for a 6S Plus. Before I do, I
want to remove the 5 from my account. In looking into that, I've discovered
something weird: the name is "Alex's iPhone 5", but the device type is 5S, not
5. This is obviously wrong, but will it cause problems when I go to remove the
iPhone? Is there anything I should do about this? Thanks for any information.

In iOS 8, When I was using a blue tooth earpiece and turned VoiceOver off,
then turned it back on, it would automatically reconnect to the earpiece,
and in the audio I was listening to would stay in the earpiece. In iOS 9,
VoiceOver goes to the speaker, as does music.

Is there a setting I missed somewhere?

Sadly, this seems to work only on iPads, not iPhones or iPods. I have no idea
why that is, and it's incredibly frustrating, but that's what seems to be the
case for now I'd suggest emailing Apple, or using www.apple.com/feedback to
tell them you want this feature in *all* iOS devices.

Facebook Password

2015-09-27 Thread Traci Duncan
Boy, it is not my week for passwords! ;)

I have 3 Apple devices & my Facebook password is correct on my iPad & Mac,
however I need to reenter it on my new iPhone. I set up iCloud keychain, in
hopes this would enter it in for me. Unfortunately, this hasn’t happened.

Before I decide to create a new password, do y’all have any other suggestions?

I sure hope I like using iCloud keychain & that it is secure enough. Sheesh,
getting old. Lol!

I have never used Apple Pay, only read about it. I am intrigued by the notion
of paying for something from your lock screen. On the
other hand, it seems awfully insecure. Say someone steals your phone and walks
into a store. As I understand it, all you have to do
if you have wallet from the lock screen enabled, is walk up to the register and
hold your phone near the special NFC reader, and
presto. Your credit card is charged. Surely, there is something more to it,
something I am missing.

(Even attempting to disable fingerprint protection for your device
will prevent it from storing cards for

Mary,

It's been awhile since I set up the credit card I use with Apple Pay in my
iPhone but I had to first add it to my Passbook. When I've used Apple Pay at
Walgreens and McDonald's, I first have to select the applicable credit card
in my Passbook and then make sure my appropriate finger is on the home touch
ID button before I hold the phone near the reading device to record the
purchase. I don't know if this procedure is the same for everyone or if I
set up certain settings for it to work this way.

Re: Newbie Apple Pay question

2015-09-27 Thread eileen . misrahi
Hello,

I don't get to use Apple Pay as much as I would like because of the lack of
merchants that accept it. Mark, you gave me good reason to check my settings to
see if I would be notified each time which dard I would like to use. I went "to
settings under "Passport and Apple Pay" and didn't see any option to turn this
on. Am I missing something? Under the default card button, I could change the
credit card there, but nothing else was said about selecting a different card
at checkout. Please advise on where I can find this setting.

As far as I'm concern, Apple Pay is probably the most secure method to complete
a transaction. Everytime I go into a store that is not on the Apple Pay band
wagon, I ask if they except it. Usually, They don't even know what I'm talking
about. Go figure that out.

Best,
Eileen

RE: Request for Storm Simulator or Relaxation App Suggestions

2015-09-27 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
Just to relax I like Rain Rain. It has a lot of options like a fountain which
I really like, and ocean sounds as well as the obvious rain sound. It's very
voice over accessible.
God bless!

Hello Everyone,

I use an app called Storm Sim to help me relax and/or fall asleep. What
similar apps do you use to help you relax or go to sleep?

I will paste in the description and URL to Storm Sim, for your convenience,
just in case you would like to check it out. I believe there is both a free
and paid version.

The paid version is VoiceOver accessible.

I look forward to your suggestions

Re: Newbie Apple Pay question

2015-09-27 Thread Daniel Miller
Mary and all,

Yes, you need to use touch ID to authenticate the purchase. Also, the device
uses a specialized ID number, that gets tied to your actual card from your bank.
It’s one of, if not the most secure methods of payment I’ve ever seen.

RE: Newbie Apple Pay question

2015-09-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Alan,

You must have your settings setup to require that you select your credit card
of choice each time you use Apple Pay.

In my case, even when the phone is locked, at the time of purchase, I simply
place my finger on the Touch ID, and hold the phone very near the terminal, and
that's all. When the phone is close enough to the terminal, the ApplePay logo
appears on the phone's display, then the phone vibrates indicating that the
transaction was successful, and that's all. After that, I simply return the
phone to it's previous location as the screen turns off, once again.

The entire process takes no more than 5 to 8 seconds.

It's a beautiful thing. And the best part is that major grocery stores are
beginning to accept Apple Pay.

Mary,

It's been awhile since I set up the credit card I use with Apple Pay in my
iPhone but I had to first add it to my Passbook. When I've used Apple Pay at
Walgreens and McDonald's, I first have to select the applicable credit card in
my Passbook and then make sure my appropriate finger is on the home touch ID
button before I hold the phone near the reading device to record the purchase.
I don't know if this procedure is the same for everyone or if I set up certain
settings for it to work this way.

Mary that would be quite insecure. Yes you need to use your finger

Re: Using Apple Pay in the Apple Store app

2015-09-27 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Mary,

Yes, I've purchased several things with Apple Pay from the Apple store app. If
I remember right, there's a Pay with Apple Pay option, which you double-tap.
Somewhere along the line, you use touch ID to confirm that you want to use it.
I don't remember the exact steps, but it went well. I would suggest making sure
you have the latest version of the Apple Store app. If you happen to have an
old version, maybe the option isn't there.

Best,
Anna

Hi,

I echo Ana’s statement. The apple pay process is 100% accessible with
VoiceOver. Once you’ve selected the product or added it to your cart, the apple
pay option will be on the cart screen.

Re: Using Apple Pay in the Apple Store app

2015-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Anna,
Thanks for the report of your experience. I think I have the newest version of
Apple Store at least there are no updates in my App Store. So I guess it's the
newest one. When I went to buy my item I was going to the checkout process, and
when I got to the payment place it just showed me the card I have on file with
no other options. Maybe I will go back in there and see if I can double tap
that and hope it doesn't just make a purchase, which is not what I want.
Discover card has a deal going right now where you get 10% on any Apple Pay
purchases you make with their card. So, being as mercenary as the next guy, I'd
like to get that 10%. Smile.

Re: Newbie Apple Pay question

2015-09-27 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi,

When you go to check out at a store, and you have multiple cards, as soon as
you hold your phone up to the NFC reader, you’ll get a screen asking you to
select which card you want to use. Make sure the card is selected, and hold
your finger on the home button, and boom, all done.

You might not have the AT version of the phone. Those haven’t included sim

Re: Want to be certain erase phone

2015-09-27 Thread Grant
Hi Paul,

The sim eject tool roughly resembles a paperclip. In fact, many people simply
use the pointy end of a paperclip to eject the sim card tray. I’d guarantee the
tool would be included with all unlocked iPhones, to give users a way of
inserting their sim card. I guess in cases where the phone is locked and your
carrier’s sim is already inserted, they might figure there’s no need to include
the tool.

My iPhone 5S has always showed up as an iPhone 5 in my support profile, which
of course is also incorrect. It doesn’t seem to make any practical difference,
but is definitely odd. I don’t think I'd worry too much about it. I suspect the
device removal process will go smoothly for you.

Using Apple Pay in the Apple Store app

2015-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
I saw a note on Applevis from sometime back stating that the pay with Apple Pay
option is not accessible for voiceover in the online Apple Store app. I just
tried to buy something using that app, and I also did not see the Apple Pay
option. Am I missing something? Has anyone successfully bought something using
the Apple Store app and Apple Pay with voice over?

I bought the 6s using Apple Pay from the Apple App. What was
interesting though is that my credit card rejected the payment because
they thought it was fraud. They wouldn't process it even though I told

Re: Using Apple Pay in the Apple Store app

2015-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
Well this is very interesting, since so many of you have done the Apple Pay
thing. I have an item in my bag. On the screen with the bag and item before I
check out, there were a bunch of recommended things which I rejected and tap to
continue. On the next screen there are no payment options and there is a
checkout button. If I had the checkout button I go to the screen with the one
and only payment option being a card I had previously used, the one that is on
file with iTunes and The App Store. No Apple Pay anywhere to be found. If I
double tap on that card, no other payment options materialize. So I wonder if
you folks who have had success had already a credit card on file? Did you see
two options on your screen? Your previously on file card plus Apple Pay? I am
really really confused.

Re: Using Apple Pay in the Apple Store app

2015-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Anna,
No. I have one card in Apple Pay. The very same Discover card that I am trying
to use with Apple Pay. That Discover card is showing up as the payment option.
But, how am I supposed to know if it is Apple Pay or not Apple Pay? I have use
that card previously. It is my iTunes and App Store card. I suppose I shouldn't
quibble over 10%. But if you're buying an item that cost a few hundred bucks,
10% is not chump change maybe I should put another card into Apple Pay and see
if it shows up by magic. Or maybe this is Apple Pay. I would just feel better
if I saw the words.

There is no fix really. The best you can do is upgrade your iPod, through the
iOS beta program, to iOS 9.1 beta. Maybe it will be fixed there.

Re: Facebook Password

2015-09-27 Thread Gmail
Traci, i'm afraid I can't help you with this specific password situation, only
to say that I'd think about it for a while, and then go do something else for a
bit. It might pop up in your head. To guard against problems like this in the
future, I highly recommend the iOS app called 1Password. Is a password manager
on the iPhone, Mac, and windows. I believe her Mac version is accessible, or
being worked on, but I don't know the status of it, since I don't use a Mac.
The developer is really awesome in terms of making his abs usable for VoiceOver
users, though.

The system I use for passwords is to pick three words that stay the same, and
one that changes based on what website you're logging into. I would also
suggest that one of the words that stays the same have a number in it, for
example, zero for an o. This makes it very easy to always have a number in your
password, and not have to remember if The word that changes has a number in it
or not.

Thanks,
Ari

Re: Newbie Apple Pay question

2015-09-27 Thread Alan Lemly
Mark,

I think what I've been doing may have more to do with ignorance than any
setting I have. I think the next time I use apple pay, I'm going to try it from
the lucked screen as you described and expect I'll love it even more if that
works as I'm betting it will.

Thanks for setting me straight.

RE: Using Apple Pay in the Apple Store app

2015-09-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Mary,

I have discovered that, sometimes, it is necessary to make certain that the
native Passbook/Wallet app is open before opening the app in which you wish to
make a purchase.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine was attempting to purchase some Amtrack
tickets using the Amtrack app. The Apple Pay did not appear as an option for
her. I suggested that she restart her phone, and open the Passbook app, before
launching Amtrack. After doing this, the Apple Pay was then displayed as a
purchasing option.

Hi Anna,

Re: Want to be certain erase phone

2015-09-27 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, in order to reset my phone, I needed to enter in a restrictions passcode.
I tried a few different options, I could not get it correct. :) I was confused
& frustrated. You know when you feel like you are pretty certain of a
passcode, then it turns out to be incorrect? It was that sort of situation.

Thanks,

Re: Using Apple Pay in the Apple Store app

2015-09-27 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Mark,
I did as you suggested, and I don't get any different results. No special Apple
Pay button is present. But I also find interesting is that I'm having to sign
in with my password all over the place when I do things in the app store or
with Apple Store. Touch ID is supposed to be enabled for all this good stuff,
such as yesterday when I purchased a voice in voice dream reader in the iTunes
Store. But my touch ID does nothing in those instances. I meant the app store,
not the iTunes Store. In any case, I wonder if my having to enter my ID and
password where I thought I was going to just be able to do touch is an
indication that something is not quite right. Maybe I should go to a Mac store
and see what they say.

iPad solution/app for viewing lecture in realtime?

2015-09-27 Thread barcklay
Hi,

My son has scotomas in his central vision and uses a monocular to view the
blackboard during college lectures. It is a challenge to view the board
and take notes simultaneously. I'm aware that there may be solutions
involving a camera and laptop but he feels this will be too difficult to
manage during class while also taking notes.

Is anyone on this list aware of an iPad-based solution? I think it would
look something like this:

- A small video camera connects to an iPad app by cable or Wifi. The
camera might need to be mounted or positioned some distance (1 meter) away
from the viewer and it is needs to be wide angle enough to cover the entire
blackboard area.
- An app on the iPad would present the video image in real-time, and allow
the user to zoom in and capture images from the video. Ideally, it would
be possible to assemble the captured images in real-time and take notes as
well.

I spoke to a friendly Apple store staff member who suggested that it might
be possible to use an iPhone + iPad combination + FaceTime. I tried this
out but the image quality is not good enough and there is no zoom
capability with the video.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Deleting unwanted contacts in iCloud? Can it be done?

2015-09-27 Thread Gerald Mader
Hello there. This is Jerry Mader. I have a ton of email that was accidentally
brought over from my old iPod onto my iPhone 4s. I want to delete it out of my

emails I keep putting them back on my phone. What is the most efficient way of
deleting all these emails? There are a ton say reply to Comment from back when
you used to be able to reply to comments from Facebook using your email. And I
want to know how I would delete all these emails do I have to delete them one
by one or can I somehow using computer or using the phone select the mall and
get rid of them and one good sweep?
Thank you very much for your help on this. Jerry Mader

A Question to Those Using the Nature Scape Relaxation App

2015-09-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I downloaded the 99 cent version of the Nature Scape app.

For the life of me, I cannot get the app to switch sounds. When I swipe up
or down on the display, I hear VoiceOver say something like, "Page 1 of 11,
Page 2 of 11, etc" but I cannot effect a page change nor subsequently a
sound change.

Could I have downloaded the wrong app?

All Replies Appreciated.

Mark

Re: Request for Storm Simulator or Relaxation App Suggestions

2015-09-27 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Mark. My favorite app that simulates storms is called Thunder Space. There
are a few free storms, and you can buy others too. My favorite part about the
app is it uses the LED flashlight to simulate lightning. The only bad thing
about that app is you have to use headphones to listen to the storms because
the stereoscopic effects or whatever they call them don't work on speakers.

Re: Pandora radio

How do you remove stations?

Hi Terri,
I think I'm running the latest Pandora version, 6.4.1, on my iPhone 6 with
IOS 9.0.1. As I look at my screen, immediately above the first entry in my
station list is a button labeled Add Station. Flicking right from this
control, I find a Create Station control, which is a text box where I can
enter the artist I'm interested in.I hope this helps you.

Oh, by the way, this latest version now has an accessible control which
lets me sort stations by the date that they were added, or sort stations
alphabetically, which is what I prefer. Actually, that control may have
been there all along but I couldn't get to it with older versions of IOS
and VoiceOver, so this is a nice change, indeed. Hopefully the Pandora
developers won't break it any time soon.

Hi. Since I have updated to the latest Pandor Radio app I can't find
where to add or create another artist that you want to listen too. If
someone can tell me how to go about finding this feature with this latest
version I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Re: Want to be certain erase phone

2015-09-27 Thread Gmail
Tracy, were you enable to get to the option, or just didn't feel like doing it
that way? I have never done any of this before, since I've never wiped an
iPhone for sale, but I imagine the reset option wouldn't be very hard to use.
There's a podcast on doing this on AppleVis which was posted a while ago.

I'm afraid I can't help you with your Mac questions, since I've never used a
Mac. If I hear anything about devices in iTunes, I either think of the devices
tab in the preferences menu, which is on Windows, though I'm not sure if it's
on mac, or the devices submenu in the file menu; again, this is in iTunes on
Windows, but I'm not sure if it's on the Mac.

Thanks,
Ari

Hi

I've seen some discussion about 3D Touch not offering VO users much in mail.
Just wanted to say that's where I've found one of my
favourite uses for it. If you force touch on a link, it opens right in the app
with no need to go to safari. Pretty handy time
saver, particularly if you get daily newspaper emails, etc.

Anyway hope that helps someone.
