RE: [tech-vi Announce List] iPhone 14 Pro Models Will Have a New Chime During Startup

2022-09-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If the regular iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have the sound it can't be part of the A16
chip because they only have the A15, same as the iPhone 13/13 Mini and 13
Pro/Pro Max.
Only the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max is getting the A16 chip.

>From the Tech-VI list owner:
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models will have the ability to play a chime
during the boot process. This has been an option which many blind iPhone users
have wanted for years. Rather than posting the entire article I am pasting just
the relevant section below. If you go to the original source link you can hear
what the new chime sounds like. Please note that on my PC the sound was a bit
louder than expected. Those using headphones, earbuds or who have sensitivity
to loud sounds should be aware of this.

Boot chime for iPhone 14 Pro

Another new feature coming to iPhone 14 Pro models is a boot chime. More
specifically, users will have the option to make the iPhone play a sound every
time the device is turned on or off as part of the iOS accessibility features.

Since the startup sound is played during the boot process, the chime is part of
the bootrom of the new A16 chip – which is probably why this option is not
available for other iPhone models.

RE: A concern about iPhone 12 and battery

2022-09-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Even at 80% it should not go from 100% to below 30% in 5 or 6 hours.
But checking Settings > Battery is a good start because here you can also see
which apps use up the most battery.
My iPhone 11 is also just under 2 years old and my battery health is at 85%, I
still get pretty much all day battery life, but where in the beginning I may
have been at 40% or so at the end of the day I am now at 20%.

Jim,
Open settings, Battery and double tap battery health.
If your battery is over 80% maximum capacity; Apple says you should be OK. But
from my experience if it shows your maximum capacity is under 85%, you may want
to take it to an Apple store and see about a battery replacement, which should
be under $70.
Make an appointment of course before doing that.

RE: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14

2022-09-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If the satellite functionality doesn't work above 62 degrees North they
probably use Globalstar satellites because Iridium definitely work much further
north than that and probably do so all the way to the pole.
And 62 degrees is not really all that far north in Canada since the border
between the provinces to the Territories west of Hudson Bay runs along the 60th
parallel. Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon Territory is between 60 and 61
degrees, Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territory is at well over 62
degrees. In Alaska Anchorage is just below the 62nd parallel, but Fairbanks is
well over 64 degrees. I guess the number of people who live above 62 degrees is
quite small when compared to the population of the country, but then again it
is where this service would be most needed and where a lot of work happens like
mining, oil/gas and so on.
I think this will be a great feature for the places further south in Canada
where the largest number of people venture out into the outdoors because in
Vancouver for example one can be just a few miles from the city in some valley
in the mountains and you won't have cell coverage. There are dozens and maybe
hundreds of search and rescue call outs each year when some city slicker in
running shoes and shorts thinks they need to go for a hike in the north shore
mountains, in Vancouver it's maybe nice and warm yet even now in September the
days are getting short and you can run into very nasty weather in the mountains.
I don't see this new feature taking away much business from companies like
Garmin or Zoleo yet because these devices are much more reliable and while it
costs money and it isn't cheap, if you are really spending a lot of time out of
cell coverage and you have to communicate for work or whatever then these are
still your best option. A plan with unlimited messages is about $70 Canadian a
month, but you can also suspend it if you mostly use the device only during the
summer, then you pay $5/month which keeps everything active until you activate
it again for full usage.

The satellite alert was the most compelling part of the presentation.
An article in Mac Rumors says the service will not be available until November.
It will also not work above 62 degrees latitude, which is the far northern
parts of Canada and Alaska.

I believe Apple is offering it free because it wants to be the first phone with
satellite communication. It has not figured out how to price the service and
who should provide it long term so Apple is giving itself two years to figure
all of this out.

Personally, I live in a big city and use Verizon as my network, which has the
greatest amount of coverage of any cell phone network in America. I would
rarely if ever need the service. I love my 13 Mini and will wait until at least
for the USB-C iPhones.

2022-09-07 Thread Richard Turner
Jim,
Open settings, Battery and double tap battery health.

2022-09-07 Thread Kelly Pierce
The satellite alert was the most compelling part of the presentation.
An article in Mac Rumors says the service will not be available until
November. It will also not work above 62 degrees latitude, which is
the far northern parts of Canada and Alaska.

I believe Apple is offering it free because it wants to be the first
phone with satellite communication. It has not figured out how to
price the service and who should provide it long term so Apple is
giving itself two years to figure all of this out.

Personally, I live in a big city and use Verizon as my network, which
has the greatest amount of coverage of any cell phone network in
America. I would rarely if ever need the service. I love my 13 Mini
and will wait until at least for the USB-C iPhones.

A concern about iPhone 12 and battery

2022-09-07 Thread Jim Portillo
Greetings,
I have noticed lately that the battery on my iPhone 12 seems to hold a charge
for less period of time than before. I realize that I use my phone a lot, but
it seems as though I have to charge it much more than before. I don’t use any
new apps that would take up a lot of battery, and I close the apps that I
frequently use. Also, I noticed that there are more times these days where my
phone gets warm, we are as I don’t think I have noticed that before. There are
times when it actually gets hot.
Should I be concerned with more charges, and the battery going down faster than
before? Should I be concerned regarding the warmth or heat of my phone at times?
My iPhone is right at two years old. I got it October, 2020. I definitely
qualify for an upgrade now, and I am wondering if this might be a sign to look
at something new.
I am going on vacation next week, and I want my phone to behave and keep a
battery charge for a while. I don’t want to go from 100% charge in the morning
to less than 30% charge f five or six hours later, when the phone is hardly
being used. This is not normal for me.
Any thoughts?
Jim

He Apple Watch 8 Ultra sounds pretty cool and if I did more scuba diving
than I currently do once every couple of years when I go to the
Philippines I might be tempted to see how accessible it is as a dive

The iPhone 14 has the same A15 chip as the iPhone 13 although they didn't

new iPhone and they kept using the same chip as in the one from the year
 before.
The iPhone 14 Pro gets the latest A16 chip which makes the new camera
 system and always-on display possible.
I thought it was nice to see that Apple included the new emergency SOS via
satellite on both phones and I was definitely surprised when they said it
was going to be free for the next 2 years. This would indicate, however,
that ultimately it will be a paid service and of course let's not forget
that it is only available for the United States and Canada at that point.
For once Canada is getting something at launch which was not always the
case (Apple New, Apple Pay and other features are examples where it took a
while for Canada to get it).
Crash detection is also part of all iPhone 14 models so now if you are
driving with somebody and you have a crash (let's hope it will never
happen) you may get help quicker.
As expected the Mini is gone and replaced with the 6.7 inch iPhone 14 Plus.

Also, in the United States (not sure about Canada) all iPhone 14 models
will now no longer have a SIM tray, it is e-SIM only from now on.

Apart from that this is pretty much it. Anybody who has an iPhone 13 or 13

considerable time out of cell service and may want the added peace of mind
the emergency SOS via satellite offers; you can also share your location

have dedicated devices like Garmin's Inreach or a Zoleo satellite
messenger which of course also requires you to subscribe to one of their
plans, you can text anybody and receive text replies from anybody and you
don't have to make a big production of pointing your iPhone to where the
satellite is. An Inreach or Zoleo in fact can be in your backpack's top
pocket and it works just fine and none of these devices have an external
antenna which during the presentation Apple hinted would be required.

Re: First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14

2022-09-07 Thread CHELA Robles
Well I thought the audio description was really good. I just wanna say that I’m
gonna stick with my iPhone 8 Plus until it’s no longer supported with iOS
versions anymore and obviously until it bites the dust or greatly has a
significantly degraded battery then I will consider the later models of phones
as for the Apple Watch I have The fifth series and until that bites the dust
and is no longer supported regarding watchOS versions, I will use that. The
ultrasounds really good and so does the eight model. No mention of iOS 16 being
compatible with older phones but we shall see once it’s rolled out. if I
remember correctly the 8+ will support iOS 16 but I could be very wrong. and of
course I think watchOS 9 will support series 5 of its watch.

iPhone Sound Quality

2022-09-07 Thread Joe Orozco
For some reason, the audio quality on my iPhone SE 2020 is terrible,
most noticeable when recording in Voice Memos or when sending audio
messages. There's a loud hissing, and my voice sounds muffled. I have
no screen protector on the device. I've never dropped the phone.
Physically, it's in great shape. Do you have any ideas for what might
work to rectifiy the issue? The sound quality dramaticaly improves
with AirPods, but I should hope I don't need to have those connected
to produce a fair recording. Thanks for any insights.

Joe

RE: Apple's iPhone is secretly tracking your every move

2022-09-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I’m not a fan of Kim Komando myself, and I agree that a lot of people, myself
included, will trade a lot of privacy for convenience, but I don’t agree with
the apparent sentiment that if Facebook collects all of this information then
Apple gets a free pass. Not everyone uses Facebook or some of these other
services that are mentioned, and even if they do, they still should be able to
know who is suing their data and for what. The worst privacy offender shouldn’t
set the bar for everyone else.

I agree, also remember Apple doesn't sponsor Kim. I am sometimes very leery of
taking any computer advice from a syndicated radio program I've been radio for
over 40 years and I know how radio works, like anything else, it's all about

RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

Mine is for five minutes. I'm thinking maybe the five minutes is five minutes

Sieghard and All:

I want to keep Pass Code so it is available when needed and not totally disable
it.

I think 3 people have said that it is not a good idea to have the phone powered
off most of the time as I have been doing and I want to try having it locked
when I'm not using it to save the battery. I thought powering off when it
isn't being used was saving the battery.

I set it to never lock when I first got the phone months ago and I forget where
I did it. I've spent hours this afternoon and tried the word lock in the
settings app. I found one result for lock and never and there were several
time periods in minutes and I double tapped on 5
minutes as an experiment. It's been much longer than 5 minutes and my
home screen is still talking. I don't know if I missed a save button or if I'm
misunderstanding something. Could you please help me out and give the proper
location and time period to choose for the way I use the phone?

I'm doing better with what I think is manual locking and the screen doesn't
talk and I can press the home button and speech resumes. It's been a long day
and I'm confused since I don't understand your saying "I personally am not one
of those and want my phone to lock relatively quickly after I use it" since it
went silent on me almost immediately.

All help is greatly appreciated.

2022-09-07 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello,

I recently exchanged a number of messages with my brother who is an Android
user.

No longer needing to retain the conversation I deleted it in the usual way.

No matter what I do the most recent message I sent to him and the last in the
conversation remains on my iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I have turned messages off in iCloud but I cannot delete this particular
message.

I have turned the device on and off but when I try to delete the message it
just will not go.

Not an enormous problem but somewhat irritating.

I can delete the message from my series 7 Apple Watch.

I have no idea why this particular message cannot be removed from my iPhone it
does not contain anything other than plain text.

As anyone experienced anything simular and if so did you resolve it and how?

Thanks.

RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

2022-09-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Thanks for that explanation. All I know is that if Apple decides to offer this
it will most likely be perfectly secure. In any case, as I stated before, for
me Face Id is a much better option, I can use it when it's cold out and I am
wearing gloves and it works whether my fingers are full of little cuts and wood
glue.

FYI: Pixels use an optical sensor. Essentially, it's a camera. Samsung uses
ultrasonic sensors. These are more accurate and I believe capture more data
points for which to make an unlock decision. It's been the case that
fingerprint sensors, especially optical ones, do have some level of
false-positive recognition. For more on the various types, check out

On iPhone’s you need to have a home button. On Android devices, touch ID can be
built into the power button or a sensor on the back of the phone. They can also
put the touch ID under the glass.

First thoughts on Apple Watch series 8 and iPhone 14

2022-09-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Apple Watch 8 has some good new features with crash detection and the
build-in body temperature sensor, but from what they said during the event that
temperature sensor seems to be exclusively used for cycle tracking and may help
women who are wanting to get pregnant, they did not say you could simply use it
to measure your body temperature as you can with a Withings Thermo or other
body temperature thermometer to see if you have a fever or not.
T
He Apple Watch 8 Ultra sounds pretty cool and if I did more scuba diving than I
currently do once every couple of years when I go to the Philippines I might be
tempted to see how accessible it is as a dive computer; but it's definitely an
impressive watch.

The iPhone 14 has the same A15 chip as the iPhone 13 although they didn't say
it in so many words; I think that is the first time Apple released a new iPhone
and they kept using the same chip as in the one from the year before.
The iPhone 14 Pro gets the latest A16 chip which makes the new camera system
and always-on display possible.
I thought it was nice to see that Apple included the new emergency SOS via
satellite on both phones and I was definitely surprised when they said it was
going to be free for the next 2 years. This would indicate, however, that
ultimately it will be a paid service and of course let's not forget that it is
only available for the United States and Canada at that point. For once Canada
is getting something at launch which was not always the case (Apple New, Apple
Pay and other features are examples where it took a while for Canada to get it).
Crash detection is also part of all iPhone 14 models so now if you are driving
with somebody and you have a crash (let's hope it will never happen) you may
get help quicker.
As expected the Mini is gone and replaced with the 6.7 inch iPhone 14 Plus.
Storage still tops out at 1 Tb so no 2 Tb phone as was rumoured.
Also, in the United States (not sure about Canada) all iPhone 14 models will
now no longer have a SIM tray, it is e-SIM only from now on.

Apart from that this is pretty much it. Anybody who has an iPhone 13 or 13 Pro
has in my opinion very little reason to upgrade unless you spend considerable
time out of cell service and may want the added peace of mind the emergency SOS
via satellite offers; you can also share your location via Find My by
satellite, but I haven't quite figured out if you can simply send text messages
to somebody else, but I don't think so. If you have dedicated devices like
Garmin's Inreach or a Zoleo satellite messenger which of course also requires
you to subscribe to one of their plans, you can text anybody and receive text
replies from anybody and you don't have to make a big production of pointing
your iPhone to where the satellite is. An Inreach or Zoleo in fact can be in
your backpack's top pocket and it works just fine and none of these devices
have an external antenna which during the presentation Apple hinted would be
required. Anyways, the satellite SOS is definitely a good start and once again
something new and innovative Apple has introduced and I would bet money on it
that within the next year or so Android phones will be released which also have
this. What surprised me was that Apple seems to have set u p their own centre
for this, but that is probably the only way they can offer this for free and
they also didn't say which satellite network they use for this, i.e. Iridium or
Globalstar.

Will I upgrade from my iPhone 11? I honestly haven't decided, but if I do it
would definitely be to a 14 Pro because then at least I would also gain the
LiDAR feature.
As for the Apple Watch I think I'll stick with my sixth Gen watch, it doesn't
have blood oxygen or the new temperature sensor, but unless I experience what
Arnold Schwarzenegger did in "Junior" I doubt I'll be pregnant any time soon.
In any case, I'll wait to see if my provider wants to offer me a deal I can't
refuse, Telus already sent me a message yesterday telling me that I am on their
priority list and will get a call in case I want to preorder the new iPhone
although even if I decide to upgrade I would probably rather buy it outright.

You can double press the home button on Iphones with a home button and get a
list of open apps. You can select any of these you wish and then do a 3 finger
swipe up and close those apps. How can I close open apps on the watch?

I have looked through the apple watch user guide and have googled this topic
but can't find anything about this. Is it even possible?

Thanks.

No, there is not, iPhones without a home button use Face Id and that has not
changed with the iPhone 14's which were just announced this morning.
I am not saying it's impossible that Apple at some point will introduced
under-display Touch Id which then would have a Touch Id sensor under a
particular spot of the display, but since it wasn't included this year it would
be the iPhone 15 next September at the earliest that would have it and I
wouldn't hold my breath.

Good Evening:

The recent Face ID hit or miss thread caught my interest since, like the
original poster, I have an iPhone SE 2020 and like Touch ID.

The SE2020 is my first smart phone and is my back up with my land line being
my primary phone. I have the cell powered off most of the time and might power
it on for texting or to check the weather app etc. I have Apple ID, Touch ID,
and Pass Code set up and have purchased an app on the App Store. The way
things are set up, I have to type in my pass code when I power up. I can
usually do it correctly the first or second time so typing it isn't the
problem; I'd prefer to use Touch Id instead if possible. I am not in a work or
school situation and my house does not resemble Grand Central Station and I do
not have a lot of personal information on the cell.

The original post did say locked and not powered off. When I first got the
cell and was trying to follow along with a tutorial, the phone kept saying
locked what sounded every 30 seconds and locked became a "dirty"
word and I never investigated what it was good for. I turned lock to never.
I'm using the phone a little more now and would be willing to change that if
someone could explain why it would be good when I use the phone so little. I'd
greatly appreciate knowing if I can keep the pass code for when I needed it for
other things and could use Touch ID when powering on.
  Thanks,

Margaret

Then don't post stuff you think doesn't sound right and which comes from
sources like Kim Commando who is known for their rubbish.
I can go online and in a few minutes find a dozen articles which bash Apple to
any degree and as Nimer and others pointed out, if you use a smartphone and are
online to even a moderate degree you are being tracked whether you want it or
not; it's a trade of and most people are willing to give up a good amount of
their privacy to enjoy the conveniences smartphones and the online lifestyle
offer. If you don't want it you can choose not to have a smartphone, you can
choose to not use a computer connected to the internet, pay cash and do your
banking in person. Of course that also means you can't buy or book anything
online, use Uber and all of those things.

Kim Komando is nothing but a kwak out to get page clicks by posting scary
articles. I'd say you should be much more worried by all the data your provider
keeps about you, and all the data you yourself put out there on places like
Facebook, and all the sites tracking what you do on the web, and all the
cameras watching you when you leave your home, and all the devices you bring
into your home that are always listening and watching, and all the data miners
out there, and all your financial data each time you pay with a card, and all
the services that get access to your banking data when you link banking data
through sites, and and and... *sigh* I suppose to most people, it is a secret
as they don't go into privacy settings, and don't read terms of service, but
this is far from secret, and is nothing Apple is trying to keep hidden.

Apple in fact does the best job of keeping people's information secure and
private as much as it is possible.
Facebook really hates them because they make it so easy to opt out of much of
the tracking that is going on and of course any online personality with some
following can throw out such rubbish. It makes much better link bait to say
"Apple is tracking you wherever you go" than to say "Your smartphone tracks you
wherever you go but iPhones do a much better job of letting you maintain more
privacy".

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Scroll down and double tap Display & Brightness.
In the Display and Brightness settings, double tap Auto-Lock.
Choose the amount of time you want your screen to stay on after you last touch

Hope this helps.

Margaret,

Auto Lock under Display and brightness locks the phone when there is no screen
activity. If you touch the screen or something is running that is causing the
screen to refresh, it won't lock.

Set it to five minutes, lay the phone down with nothing running and in five
minutes it will lock.
I have mine set to 5 minutes because it is only there in case I forget to

That is not a secret, nor has it ever been a secret.

If people would take the time to read and explore the settings on any device,
they would already know this.

I find it annoying that people like Kim Commando make it sound like Apple is
doing something devious.

It isn’t Apple’s fault people don’t bother checking the security settings they

Good Evening:

The recent Face ID hit or miss thread caught my interest since, like the

not have a lot of personal information on the cell.

The original post did say locked and not powered off. When I first got the cell and was
trying to follow along with a tutorial, the phone kept saying locked what sounded every
30 seconds and locked became a "dirty"
word and I never investigated what it was good for. I turned lock to never.
I'm using the phone a little more now and would be willing to change that if
someone could explain why it would be good when I use the phone so little. I'd
greatly appreciate knowing if I can keep the pass code for when I needed it for
other things and could use Touch ID when powering on.

You have to remember that just as you described, the passcode is required when
you turn your phone off and back on. Each time you restart the phone you have
to enter your passcode, the same goes if you try Touch I d and after a certain
number of attempts it doesn't recognize your fingerprint, it will then ask for
the passcode to authenticate and unlock the phone.
I don't know if you turn your phone often, but really you shouldn't. iPhones
are designed to be on all the time and the don't have to be shut down at all.
From time to time you may end up having to turn it off and back on if you have
strange issues or of course there could be a time when you simply run out of
battery and the phone turns itself off, but I literally go weeks and sometimes
months without turning my phone off and back on and the only time I have to put
in my passcode is when for some reason Face Id isn't working a few times one
attempt after another (same goes for Touch Id) or for some other strange
reason. But typically I again often go days without having to enter my passcode
manually.

It's been asking for the Pass Code for months now.

When I power up, it says Pass Code is required when phone starts up. My memory
is that it started asking for it after I had set use Touch ID on the App Store
instead of Apple ID. I turn on the phone much more than I get apps and had
tried to change it to must use Apple ID on App Store in hopes of not being
asked for the Pass Code to turn on the phone, but I still had to use the pass
code. I THINK I could use Touch ID the other day when I installed a free app
from the App Store and did not have to type my Apple ID but it wasn't a good
day and my memory may not be correct.

I don't want to get rid of the Pass Code entirely; having it helped with some
mishap I had. I just would prefer not to have to type it in every time I use
the phone.

I used to have an old iPhone with touch id. I don't think I had to enter my

I also wish touch id were on the newer phones. I found them much easier than

times and then will require me to use my pass code to unlock my phone. I am

You cannot use touch ID with your iPhone. Your iPhone supports face ID and

locked what sounded every 30 seconds and locked became a "dirty"

word and I never investigated what it was good for.

how close apps on the watch

2022-09-07 Thread Dan

You can double press the home button on
Iphones with a home button and get a list of open apps. You can
select any of these you wish and then do a 3 finger swipe up and
close those apps. How can I close open apps on the watch?

I have looked through the apple watch user
guide and have googled this topic but can't find anything about
this.  Is it even possible?

Thanks.

RE: Can I Use Touch ID Instead of Pass Code

2022-09-07 Thread Dennis Long
Margaret You shouldn't power it off every time your done using it is meant to
be on. You could've used touch id to install that free app.

I just would prefer not to have to type it in every time I use
the phone.
