Subject:Prepare to upgrade to macOS High Sierra 10.13

I have posted information earlier to the list about High Sierra. There
have been people who have upgraded to High Sierra without first
preparing to upgrade. So please don’t make the mistake of upgrading
without first preparing for macOS High Sierra 10.13.
PREPARE TO UPGRADE TO MACOS HIGH SIERRA 10.13
MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER CAN RUN HIGH SIERRA _IMAC__ _models from late
2009 or later_MACBOOK__ _models from late 2009 or later_MACBOOK PRO
_models from mid 2010 or later_MACBOOK AIR_ models from late 2010 or
later_MAC MINI _models from mid 2010 or later_MAC PRO_ models from mid
2010 or later
HERE ARE THE MAC’S MODEL IDENTIFIER:IMAC10,1 or newerMACBOOK6,1 or
newerMACBOOKAIR3,1 or newerMACBOOKPRO6,1 or newerMACMINI4,1 or
newerMACPRO5,1 or newer
If your Mac isn’t on that list (or has an older model number), then
regardless of its age or speed, it won’t run High Sierra.
RAMHigh Sierra requires a minimum of 2GB of RAM, but more RAM 4GB - or
more is better for your Mac’s performance.
FIRMWARE UPDATESSome Macs may require updated EFI or SMC firmware to
run High Sierra. To see if a firmware update is available, check this
webpage [1]. Unless you previously hid them from the list, firmware
updates should also appear when you choose Apple  > App Store and
click Updates (in Yosemite and later).
FREE DISK SPACEApple says that the High Sierra installer requires 14.3
GB of free storage space to perform the upgrade (and that after the
installation is finished, High Sierra will occupy about 1.5 GB more
than Sierra did). Although you may be able to get away with exactly
14.3 GB free, you’ll do much better starting _at least 20+GB of Free
Space (_before downloading the installer). Even more free space is
better of course. Some High Sierra features will require increasing
amounts of disk space as you use them. You need to have ‘room to
grow’.
OS X 10.8 MOUNTAIN LION OR LATERIn order to install High Sierra, your
Mac must be running 10.8 Mountain Lion or later.
UPDATE YOUR THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE BEFORE INSTALLING HIGH
SIERRARoaringApps maintains a wiki listing hundreds of Mac and iOS
apps and the current status of their compatibility with various
operating system versions, as reported by users. If you are using
Microsoft Office you can check Microsoft’s support article for
compatibilityMicrosoft Office support for macOS 10.13 High Sierra [2]
CHECK YOUR CURRENT PRINTER IS COMPATIBLE WITH HIGH SIERRAUpdate the
Printer Drivers and Software to High Sierra compatible
BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!_ ‘TIME MACHINE BACKUP’__ _and a_
‘BOOTABLE DUPLICATE BACKUP’!___
TEST YOUR DUPLICATE - you should test the duplicate to make sure it
truly is bootable before taking the plunge and upgrading to High
Sierra.

Re: Mum's Phone - can't see wifi

2016-01-06 Thread rblit
found these 2 solutions
will try them this afternoon

I had the same problem, in your wireless device you can select (airport
utility) you can select the radio mode in order for your apple I phone to work
try to set it to 802.11n and select the 802.11b/g compatible that should do the
trick

I had the same problem. My network name had a space in it "John Smith" I
changed it to "John_Smith" and it fixed the problem. I know can access my
router! I hope it helps you with your problem.

Thanks very much Rod, the first few minutes look good.

There are so many online tutorials now and it is difficult to find
good ones, let alone download them all, as I am constrained by my slow
and low monthly limit of my Telstra wireless connection!

 Hi Rod

Those drives are fine, even WD Elements are fine and can be formatted
for Mac. I sell both to my clients.
The only time I need to go to the Passport for Mac is if they want
the lock the drive with a password feature, which is built into the
drive itself, so the software can talk to it. This is where you have
to unlock the drive before it mounts.
If you're using Encrypt Time Machine backup feature built into Time
Machine System Preference setting, then this isn't an issue

Other then that they're pretty much the same.

 Kind regards
 Daniel

Hi Blitto,
A flashing question mark at startup means your Mac is having trouble
locating the system software.

* Turn off your Mac by pressing and holding its power button for a
few seconds.
* Press the power button once to turn your Mac back on. Then, hold
down the Option key on your keyboard until the Startup Manager
[1] appears.
* Select your startup disk from the list of drives that appear on
screen.
* If your computer finishes starting up normally, choose System
Preferences from the Apple menu. Then, click the Startup Disk icon in
the System Preferences window.
* Select your normal startup volume (such as Macintosh HD) from the
list of drives that appear in the Startup Disk window.

IF YOUR INSTALLATION OF OS X NEEDS REPAIR

If you don't see your startup disk displayed in Startup Manager, or
if you see a prohibitory symbol (⊘) appear, your startup drive may
need directory repair, or OS X may need to be reinstalled.

* If you only see a disk named Recovery HD in Startup Manager,
select it instead. You can also start from OS X Recovery [2] by
holding down Command and R on the keyboard at startup.
* From the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility.
* In the Disk Utility window that appears, select your startup disk
(usually named Macintosh HD) from the left side of the Disk Utility
[3] window.
* Click the First Aid tab.
* Click Repair Disk to verify and repair any issues with your
OS X startup disk.
* After repairing the disk, try to start up normally.
* If none of these steps resolve the issue, start from OS X
Recovery [4] and reinstall OS X [5].

Re: iPhone 6, Telstra plan breakdown thinking and my ramblings,…..

2014-09-20 Thread rblit
Hi DanielDon't ever apologise for rambling as you always share
valuable knowledge. Thanks for that.I have done some sums too and in
my scenario, unless I have missed something, the numbers work
differently.A few provisos:I must stay with Telstra because of their
coverage (particularly noticeable when out of the city on camping
trips). I have very low data and call requirements.I don't have a
problem sticking with one phone for 2 years.
So:

Phone with Plan:Telstra 64GB iPhone 6 on Small plan $550 calls 1GB
data Minimum total cost is $1968  over 24 months.

Purchase Own Phone: Telstra BYOM plan $550 calls 500mb data
$45/month, $1080 in 24 months PLUS cost of Phone $999 = $2079

Subject:Re: iPhone 6, Telstra plan breakdown thinking and my
ramblings,…..

 Hi Rod
Apologies for the long post,…but hopefully it all follows and you
can get the info from it,…..(I have a habit now of not re-reading a
post,…just sending it,…lol). (I changed the subject line slightly
as well).

Not necessarily…..it's kind of a yes and no and maybe answer I'm
afraid. And every person/plan is different. But I'll give you my take
on my plan and situation,……seeing as it relates to me.
A few years back when I bought iPhones (4s) for myself and Ronni we
did some calculations. (well we spoke on length about it) and we
worked out the best plans for both of us. I went with a $79 BYOM plan
(bring your own mobile). The reason being it was cheaper per month by
about $20-$30 and at that time only on a 12month contract versus the
24 month contract. So for that plan I got $1200 worth of calls and
2.5GB data. (I went with Telstra due to the Vodafone mess they had at
the time and the better Telstra coverage I needed for moving around
Perth area and hills a lot,..as well as down South etc). The current
plan at the time where they gave you a free phone was about $99 or
$109 for the same value.  So when I looked at it, it was about
$240-360 cheaper per year to buy the phone outright and then sign up
for a BYOM plan. (and obviously double that if I looked at being
locked in to a 2 year contract plan. So over two years that figure
goes to $480-$720 dearer. I then also factored in selling off one
phone model as well.
That was about 3 years ago now I'd say. So jump forward to now,….
If I relook at the plan I'm on now ($79/month) which still has the
same $1200 worth of calls and 2.5GB of data. (on average I can spend
between $950-$1150 worth of calls per month). To get a similar plan
now
http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/mobiles-on-a-plan/iphone-6/index.htm?switch=Features
[1] The medium plan I either have to take less data or less amount of
calls depending on which extra I choose,..so although its $86/per
month it's not as good. So I look at the Large plan which will give me
either more data then I have now but less calls,…(which I could just
squeeze in.) or more call value and the same amount of data. (which
would be my safer bet). This plan is $95. Which is $16 per month more
and I'm locked into a 24month contract. And with that I get a free
64GB iPhone 6. (For ease of calculation I just look at it at $20/per
month more). But for exact calculation,..it's $192 per year dearer.
Factor that in being locked into a 2 year contract to
compare,…then it's $384 dearer over those two years.
I then work out that roughly I can get $350-$400 for my wife's iPhone
4s 64GB. So take the lower figure. (She then gets my iPhone 5 32GB).
So I take those two figures together,…$384 :saving and $350
selling the older phone. This makes a total of $734. To buy outright
the iPhone 6 64GB is $999.  So if I then look over the 2 year period
again, it's really cost me about $265. (yes, I have to buy it at
full price upfront,..and hope that I sell the older iPhone. And then
wait for the full 2 years to get the savings). Anything falls over
with these conditions then can throw a spanner in the
works/calculation.
(plus, depending on jobs, some businesses will let you write off a
portion of your phone purchase as a business expensive…the higher
percentage depending on how much you use it for work.).
Obviously there are a few factors that can poke holes in all this.
Not limited to,…if you upgrade again after 12 months, the
calculations are all thrown out. Given I skipped over the 5s and am
going from 5 to 6,…I assume that I'll go to the iPhone 7 (unless
there's some massive huge wow factor for the iPhone 6s) (s being
for Sapphire screen)….lol,..I don't know,..I'm guessing. (not that
I've ever broken a screen on any iPhone,..touch wood). Another factor
is if Telstra come along and say I'm sorry we're discontinuing that
plan as it's an old plan and we no longer support it,…so you must
upgrade to our new fantastic super beneficial much better plans.
(note the sarcasm and sales technique,….lol).  Or some other
factors.
 So

for me I'm afraid,…but then you and i work a little differently :o)
hehe. And I think I'd be lost if it didn't fit in my jeans pocket like
normal!! lol ;) (Might be different in 2015 with an iPhone 6s Plus and
an AppleWatch :oP hehe. ;o)
We can save all the extra money we save by not being on plan and
save it for an AppleWatch,…..lol. :o) hehehe.
Did yours arrive on Friday on time? (or did you miss the date like
you thought you might do,…..)? (or did 6 turn up like you thought
you may have done as well,….lol.hehe). Did you read about the
hawkers paying $120 extra for others to buy phones to take back to
China etc. (Apparently were walking around $20,000 cash passing it
around to people to buy them for them,…to resell). Around $2000
selling back over. (one customs person I read said one guy had over 20
phones going through to claim back the GST and was holding up the
queue for others,…).
 Enjoy your new iPhone! :o))

Re: Can't Install Flash

2014-07-04 Thread rblit
Thanks Ronni

SUCCESS!

It appears the new flash installer does not contain the package to do
the install.

The installer itself tries to download the package during the
installation.

For me this “retrieving install” process would not work

At this link you can download a full installer

 Hi Blitto,
If you can’t install from the installer:
1. Control-click the installer and “Show Package Contents”
2. In Contents/Resources, double click the 'Adobe Flash Player.pkg'
3. Follow the instructions to install

What FTP client program are you using to upload contents to the

I'm on my way to a client now, so will not be available until later,

Re: Current status of Mavericks

2013-11-11 Thread rblit
Ronni posted this:

Apple has released an update for the Mail application in OS X 10.9
Mavericks to address some of the Gmail issues outlined by Joe Kissell
late last month (see “Mail in Mavericks Changes the Gmail
Equation,” 22 October 2013).

The 32.46 MB update, which can be downloaded from Apple’s Web site
or via Software Update, fixes several issues: the inability to delete,
move, and archive messages when using custom Gmail settings,
inaccurate unread mail counts, and additional — unspecified —
compatibility fixes.

It’s clear that Apple intended to make Mail in 10.9 Mavericks work
more intuitively with Google’s popular mail service, but the result
for many was a broken mess. It’ll take time before we know for sure
if Apple’s update solves the problems, but Gmail has never used a
standard IMAP implementation, so there will likely be other
incompatibilities in the future. Your best bet may be to use something
like Mailplane, which encapsulates the Gmail Web app into a native Mac
wrapper (to see why TidBITS Publisher Adam Engst likes Mailplane, see
“Zen and the Art of Gmail, Part 4: Mailplane,” 16 March 2011), or
to follow in the footsteps of Joe and leave Gmail for a more
standards-compliant email provider (see “Joe Kissell Says Sayonara
to Gmail,” 31 October 2013).

cheers

Hi Blitto,
I had a client that had Whatsapp installed and noticed this
happening, so if she has Whatsapp installed on her iPhone... the
default setting saves any picture that she receives automatically to
her Camera Roll.
If she has Whatsapp it is easy to disable this feature:
 1. Open Whatsapp 2. Tap on Settings in the bottom bar 3. Tap on
Chat Settings 4. Toggle Save Incoming Media so that it's OFF Now
the next time she receives an image from Whatsapp it will not be saved
automatically. She can however save it manually if she pleases.

The third character in the the computer's serial number indicates the
year of manufacture (within a ten-year reference). For example, if the
third character is a 2, then the year of manufacture is 2012 (of
course it could also mean 2002 or 1992, but common sense should sort
that one out). Similarly, a 9 would mean 2009, 1999 or 1989.

 Hi Waymuggers
I have been asked at short notice to give a presentation on whales of
the SW this Saturday in Augusta for the beginning of the whale
watching season which is great.
However I have just checked my MBPro (8,2 i7 2.2 GHz) and see the
connector is different from my earlier models: Im assuming it is
Thunderbolt (shows up in the info screen with Ethernet and Firewire
800) as I have a connector to Hdmi I have used for the TV.
I would imagine that the projector provided would not have
Thunderbolt or HDMI. They have asked me to send a pic of my
connections so they can check.
Would I need to get an adapter cable to fit the old style projector
connection?
 Many thanks for any advice

 Hi Blitto,

Check In System Preferences - sound - output is set to internal
speakers.

If that isn't the problem Reset PRAM and NVRAM
 Shut down your Mac
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R.
 Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key
combination before the gray screen appears and before the chime sound
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the
startup sound for three times.
 Release the keys.

 Cheers,

 Memory Card Size and Type
The HD HERO cameras supports SDHC cards up to 32GB (any SD card over
2GB is considered a SDHC card).

We recommend name brand SDHC cards such as SanDisk or Kingston with a
class 4 rating for the HD HERO Original, and a class 10 rating for the
HD HERO2.

None of the camera models currently support SDXC memory cards or
micro SD adapters.

 Hi Daniel,

With all that you said I still see no advantage in the old model.
Whatever you need to do, the new model will do it (only quicker). The
new Retina MBP is truly a technical marvel. To quote again it is the
best computer Apple has ever produced.

Just the display is worth the price of entry. :-)

Some caveats. Because it is so new, I would probably wait a month or
so to see if there are any problems with the graphics card or the
circuitry to iron out. Highly unlikely with Apple's testing and Tim
Cook wanting to appear competent but it is still a possibility. It did
occur to me also that one may not be able to expand the new MBP as in
the case of the MacBook Air but I am not sure that will be the case.
For the MacBook Air they have that restriction in place because of the
nature of the case -- it give advantages in strength and makes it more
watertight. If that were the case with the new Retina MBP I would be
tempted to buy the highest spec one I could afford from the get go.
True you would not be able to upgrade it, but as a trade off the unit
would be stronger -- time will tell on this point.

 Carlo

  Hi Carlo

  Yes, had all those points.
Just to add to yours those. I don't really have to lose the
Optical drive if I fit an SSD drive. I already have an SSD drive in
this laptop. (I removed my 750GB 7200rpm drive and put in a Series6
SSD 256GB Drive. So I still get to keep my Optical drive and have the
speed performance of the SSD. So I could do the same with the new one.
Just swap over the drive.) I then get both SSD and Optical still :o)
Yes, do have to carry run lots of cables. I was doing all that
before anyway. Plus I always have in my pocket a Firewire800/400
adapter. It just clips to the end of a FW400 cable. So even if I have
no cables, I still have the adapter. Plus it's lighter. Mind you my
pocket carries 2 flash drives, that adapter and a pocket knife,…lol.
And I already carry three external drives as well (2 Firewire/USB
multiport drives and 1 USB bootable drive). They have a stack of what
I need on them. So I can keep my SSD pretty lean anyway. I actually
only run on about 100GB at most on the SSD. So plenty of room to work
with. :o)
I think the ports work out about the same kinda. Cause if you had
the MBP-RD and needed to be on Ethernet, using Firewire then you're
out of pots on the MBP-RD but you still have the Thunderbolt free on
the standard MBP. :o)

The top MBP and entry level MBP-RD work out the same price (RRP
$2499), so I was basing it on that. But yes, as you add more RAM and
drives versus adapters, then the pricing changes quite a bit. So the
old MBP would work out more expensive.

But yes, there are lots of good reasons for both. It just comes
down to what the person wants to do with it.
It's a bit like the argument to go with a 256GB SSD versus the
500GB SSD. (Or flash drive). Is it with the $600 odd on various
machines. Or can you lean out what you store on the machine and keep
an external USB drive with you. (Or at home). Some will see the value
that extra storage space will be to have it internally and $600 will
be fine. Others will take the 256GB SSD and buy a 500GB USB drive
(which is about $100-$150 depending on brands etc). It's perception of
value versus useful versus budget.

That was another thing with the new MBP-RD. You can't add to it
if you have. Budget restrictions mean you can buy a standard MBP and
then down the track add in more RAM later (take it from 8GB to 16GB)
and as pricing comes down take out the normal drive and add in an SSD
of your choice at a later date. I could be wrong, but I think you have
to make all those choices with the MBP-RD at the start as you can't
modify it later on. I haven't looked at that point with detail, so as
mentioned could be wrong, but was just something i had thought of last
night after my other post,..lol.

  Still though, I'm still un-decided on both,…lol. :o) I think
they're both great machines, I can just see some of the
advantages/disadvatages to both :o) And that may be the same for other
people looking at both machines as well.
Some will suit one person, some will suit others. That's the nature
of the beast.
  But hey,

 Hi Blitto,

Yes, you purchase 1Password from AgileBits then from iTunes App store
you purchase for iPhone iPad.

You alone use 1Password on your Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, and iPod
touch
You'll need single user licenses for Mac and for Windows and
1Password for iPhonefrom the iTunes App Store for the iOS platform.
You'll want to get 1Password Pro only if you have an iPad or plan to
get one. Its only advantage is that it includes the native iPad
interface for less than the price of 1Password for iPhone and
1Password for iPad combined.

Create a free Dropbox account for yourself
https://www.dropbox.com/
You get 2 GB of free storage
  Install dropbox on both computers
invite a few friends to join dropbox if you need to increase your
free storage quota (i've got up to 5 GB now through 6 or 8 invites i
think.)
put documents you want to sync in dropbox folder on your computer
If you want the synced documents to continue residing in their
original place eg a folder inside your documents folder then create
alias for document in dropbox folder and place it where it suits you
ie in the relevant folder in your Documents folder
do the same on the other computer - alias from dropbox folder to
documents folder
if you have Growl installed it will actually notify you when
documents have synced
  All is now hunky dory
You can share particular folder within your Dropbox with
particular people. They get an email invite from dropbox when you set
it up. This can be useful for sending documents, articles, photos,
publications that are too large to email.
Apparently you can use Dropbox to host a website for free,
explained here
You can install Dropbox ap on your phone
The ap on your phone only looks up the documents via the web. It
does not store them on the phone unless you add them to your
Favourites list
You can share photos be creating a Gallery on dropbox
There is still some debate about whether it is safe to store
personal details such as bank account numbers, passwords etc which i
had hoped to do. BUT I think i have been convinced not to.

Ronni and Neil have answered the bulk of your questions so I
will just tie up a few loose ends.

Firstly Dropbox is free or paid cloud storage service that
allows automatic syncing with multiple computers (Mac or Windows) and
syncing with multiple mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads. So yes
it is completely suited to the task you mentioned. It also allows the
sharing of selected files with other users -- the feature that you
have been using to date.

I was a bit reticent to use Dropbox for reasons I'll give but
have succumbed to using it because it provides features that are not
yet part of iCloud. My first reservation was that the documents are
stored on a server and are thus vulnerable to being stolen if the
server is compromised, or (less likely) if Dropbox changes its policy
and decides to reap my private data. The other reservation I had was
that the default install on a Mac is quite invasive and adds tentacles
to Finder and runs a background sync process.

I mitigate the privacy issue by not putting critical data in
Dropbox. So I would avoid storing in Dropbox any data that could lead
to identity theft such as passwords or bank accounts. For my other
concern it turns out that one can reverse many of the OS changes done
by the default Dropbox install.

Dropbox (for Dummies)

2012-04-11 Thread rblit
Hi WAMUGersTrying to get my head around Dropbox.
I use it to share files with people or to send the school magazine to
the printer etc.BUT i am thinking maybe i can use it to sync stuff
between my macs.Particularly my School Macbook Pro running Snow
Leopard and my personal MacBook Air running Lion. There are a couple of
files i might like to use on both these computers eg Word and Excel
files (like bank balances, password reminders, timelogs in excel,
maybe articles i am writing etc)These days i try to remember to swap
them back form the laptop with the newer version to the computer with
the older version etc.
So - does it seem I can use Dropbox to do this?BUT - does that mean
they can no longer reside where they currently do eg MacHD, Users,
Blitto, Documents, Rod Personal folder???Do i have to shift them
to  MacHD, Users, Blitto, Dropbox       if i want them to sync
between laptops? So IF that is true I suppose I could create
aliases for these documents back in the original places they used to
live and point the alises at the Dropbox folder
Please - Am I on the right track here???
Another question: if i load the dropbox ap on my iphone - will ALL the
stuff somehow sync to the phone as well??? But there isnt enough
room.Or does the phone ap just look for the stuff on the website???
Finally - is the Dropbox site secure enough to be putting my personal
files on?
Yes - have looked over the dropbox tutorials and help a bit this
morning
Many thanks

Subject:Re: Free Beatles' Yellow Submarine ebook / music sampler

 Hi Blitto,

The Yellow Submarine ebook is in ePub format and so it can be read in
iBooks. Currently Apple only supports the iBooks app on the iPhone,
iPad, and iPod touch. There is no reason why there couldn't be a Mac
based viewer of ePub items (an iBook app say) but for some reason it
does not yet exist. Amazon has versions of its Kindle reader for all
devices, including Mac and iPad, and syncs your library over the
cloud.

Even if you find a third party ePub reader for the Mac, I suspect you
will not be able to view Yellow Submarine because of DRM. So the long
and the short of it is I believe the answer is yes, you can only view
iTunes ePub material on your iPad / iPhone -- at least for items that
are protected by DRM. I hope Apple remedies this shortcoming soon.

 Cheers,
 Carlo

From: TUAWURL: http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/22/what-almost-three-weeks-with-an-ipad-has-taught-this-blogger/Sent from: blitto (rb...@iinet.net.au)Sent to: wa Mac User Group Mac User Group Comments: An interesting reflection for those contemplating buying an iPad.What almost three weeks with an iPad has taught this blogger04-22-2010OK, I've had my iPad for exactly 19 days today. Over that time, just about everyone who knows t
hat I have the device has asked the same question: "So, how do you like it?" The easy answer is that I love this device in a very unnatural way, but there's more to the answer than that. I've learned a lot about myself and how I use my computers through the time I spend with the iPad every day.

The iPad provides a different computing experience than, say, a MacBook. While some actions, such as e-mail and browsing, are quite familiar and comfortable, things like using iWork

are very different due to the method of interacting with the device. Fortunately, I've found the experience to be a positive one, and I sometimes find myself tapping on the screen of my iMac to try to open or move things.

What follows is a list of thoughts I've jotted down (in Penultimate, naturally) over the last few days. I'd be intrigued to see how many of our TUAW readers have had similar experiences, or if you've had completely different feelings about the iPad.
1) I may never need to buy a keyboard for this thing. Well, never is a bit harsh, but I find myself typing just fine on the iPad's screen in landscape mode. Two things are helping out my typing -- the tip that I received that holding down the comma key will type an apostrophe, and using proper hand position when I type on the iPad (fingers curled, wrists not laying on the iPad itself). For absolute speed typing, however, I might just bend to the desire of buying a Bluetooth keyboard.

2) The iWork trio for iPad rocks. I've never been a big fan of Numbers, but the app actually clicks with me better on the iPad than it does on the Mac. I like the way you just create a table (spreadsheet) and drag it out to size it, the touch gestures make sense for all sorts of actions that you do to a spreadsheet, and the built-in templates are also a good start for many common tasks. As for Pages and Keynote, they are both worthy mobile versions of their Mac brethren. Frankly, I think the design team for iWork on the iPad deserves a raise and pat on the back from Steve. Not me, that other Steve. The one who runs Apple.

3) 64 GB is overkill. At least for me, 64 GB seems like a vast amount of space. I've moved all of my music and a lot of photos over to the iPad, and there's still way too much space left. I could have bought the 32 GB model and been perfectly happy. Then again, someone might come up with an app that will cause me to eat up gigs of storage at a time, and I'll feel justified. Maybe I'll just use HandBrake to rip all of my movie DVDs to iTunes, and then load 'em all onto the iPad.

4) Damn, this thing is fast. Working on my 2 GHz MacBook Air seems incredibly slow by comparison. I'm getting very spoiled by having apps load in a heartbeat instead of taking a while. As a case in point, I often need to bring up Network Utility on my Mac when I'm doing network troubleshooting. Even with my fairly fast MacBook Air, I open the lid, log in, wait for the device to connect to the appropriate network, then dig around in the Utilities folder and launch Network Utility (no, I don't have it in my Dock because there are a lot of other icons there...). On the iPad, I hit the power button, log in, tap the NetTools (US$3.99) icon, and I'm up and running. The same with Pages. If I need to write a quick article, I can go from powered down to a blank page in 7 seconds. Yow!

5) I have a love / hate relationship with the Apple case. I like the idea of being able to use the case to prop up the iPad in a variety of poses, but the case just seems poorly made. I have a feeling that I'm going to be trying out a lot of cases before I find one that I like. The Incase Convertible Book Jacket looks nice, but I want to see one in person before spending $60 on a new case.

6) Who needs to have Netflix DVDs sent through the mail? Between the Netflix app on my Wii (Hello, Apple? Why no Netflix on my Apple TV?) and its partner on my iPad, I've watched more Netflix movies in the last three weeks than I had in the year before that. The iPad is perfect for personal video watching.

7) My devious plan to go to two devices -- a 27" i7 iMac that will be showing up here soon and the iPad -- is going well. I'm not using my MacBook Air much at all. When I need a "real computer," I simply fire up iTeleport or LogMeIn Ignition on the iPad and take over my Mac. I've done that over Wi-Fi and 3G (using a Sprint MiFi) both locally and remotely. H... I forgot the iPhone. That's three devices.

8) The

Can't Load iWeb/dotMac Pages on Windows Network

2006-02-07 Thread rblit
Dear WAMUGers
I am really confused and i hope you can help please.
I've started playing with iLife06 - it's brilliant!
So brilliant that a mere moron like me was able to do a webpage and add a
podcast to it.
I posted the URL to some Windoze people on the weekend and they can view the
page and play the podcast (using QT plugin).

http://web.mac.com/blitto/iWeb
click on podcasts up the top
click on listen underneath Human Biology
then click the play triangle

So, feeling very smug i rocked up to the Principal's office Monday morning (we
are 90% Windoze school) and asked her to type the URL into her browser to check
out the podcast. How embarrassing - the site wouldn't load and we got a dotmac
error page saying sorry, but we can't find the homepage you requested...

Please, any ideas why this is happening? Anything to do with our Proxy Server or
our Windows Network???
I get the same error on 2 macs down in my department as well.

I'll answer my own question - i think.
How much flash storage will I need to store songs on my phone?

Most ROKR phones will come bundled with 512 MB flash cards, which allows you to
store up to 100 average-length songs. If your phone doesn’t come with a 512 MB
card, you will need 128MB of available flash storage space to store 25 average-
length songs on your phone. To store 50 average-length songs on your phone, you
will need 256MB of available flash storage.

Bugbear Virus

2002-12-09 Thread rblit
Dear WAMUGers
I've just been phoned by John Forrest High School to say they have received 160
emails from me containing the Bugbear Virus.
They were unable to give me the emails address that they came from, but they
said
it said it came from me - my name (but not email address)

1. I only use a mac
2. I use Norton AntiVirus with Virus Updates to 1/11/02

I found a little info on Bugbear at SYMANTEC which suggested it doesn't infect
macs.

Is it one of those viruses which makes it appear it has come from someone when
in
fact it hasn't?
