Learn to use Filemaker Pro

2018-03-04 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
Tired of mucking around with spreadsheets and word processors just to keep
track of all your important data. Got an idea for an iPhone app but don’t know
how to get started? Heard of Filemaker Pro but don’t know much about it?

Filemaker has been around almost as long as the Mac and is powering the
database systems of some of the biggest companies in the world, yet it is so
easy to use even a raw beginner can create a useful solution with it. Because
of this, Filemaker has gathered a reputation of being something of a toy, but
those who use it know this is far from the truth. Modern versions are using a
wide range of technologies to produce some amazing solutions.

The current version is Filemaker Pro 16, and version 17 will be released
sometime in the next few months. If you want to find out more, Filemaker will
be running introductory sessions around the country, including Perth, in the
coming months. For more information, go to

Filemaker Pro

2013-10-28 Thread Brett Curtis
I am adding another computer to my single computer office.
Is there any way FMP can be used real time by both computers.
I have tried putting the database in Dropbox. Both computers can access it but
changes made on one cannot be seen on the other.

Any suggestions?

also, what about Apple Mail. It seems that sent emails can only be seen on the
originating computer.

Apple calendar seems ok with them refreshing

Re: Filemaker Pro

2013-10-28 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Brett

Filemaker has Sharing that can be set up. So you can set up the database to be
shared via the local network.
(Should be in the sharing settings in the File menu from memory).

Re Mail. Sent will only stay in sync if you use IMAP for both email accounts.
IMAP may only work if your current host a) allows it and b) you have enough
storage space for all emails that you want store. (A lot of my hosted clients
start with 10GB storage space with this reason, as IMAP email doesn't take much
to build up quite quickly). IMAP is good for keeping everything in Sync, but
there are some downsides as well.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards
Daniel

This is entirely possible, but it does need a little planning and an
understanding of how Filemaker sharing works.

1. You must have ONLY ONE COPY of the database file(s), and the file(s) must be
on only one computer.

2. You must have a separate licence for each copy of Filemaker on the network,
otherwise they conflict.

3. The computer on which the file(s) reside becomes the host, and must be on
with Filemaker running at all times when you want to use the database.

4. The hosted file(s) must have sharing turned on. This is done by going to
File Sharing Filemaker Network... from the Filemaker Menu. This must be
done for each file in the solution. It's also very important that every file
has the same login and password.

5. On the Client computer, you find the hosted file by going to File Open
Remote... in the Filemaker Menu. By choosing Local Hosts in the resulting
dialog your host computer should show up (this can be annoyingly inconsistent).
For increased reliability, it is best to assign a manual IP address to the
hosting computer rather than leaving it up to DHCP.

6. The file(s) will be listed in the Open Remote... dialog. Choose the main
file for your solution and everything will work.

All of this explains why the Dropbox solution does not work as you have
described. Your file(s) CAN be in Dropbox, but you still need a hosting
computer to keep them open, and everything has to be done through that host.
You must not try to access the files directly from the client computer.

Another way out of this is to take out a Filemaker Development Subscription
(http://www.filemaker.com/technet/). It costs $99.00, but you do get a limited
licence for Filemaker Server Advanced which allows up to three simultaneous
connections. This is a far more powerful solution that native Filemaker
hosting, and provides for extra services such as relaible backups, web hosting
,etc. It would be a very cost-effective way of solving your problem.

It's difficult to say without see the database. I presume you have checked the
auto-entry options for the date modified field and made sure it is correctly
set? Is the fied in question a data entry field or a calculated value? The
fundamental auto-entry behaviour of date fields has not changed over all the 19
years I have been using Filemaker, even up to v12. What has changed, however,
are certain calculations which have been deprecated over the years. One of the
these is the Today function, which has been replaced with Get
(CurrentDate). If your field is indeed a calculated value, and originally used
the Today function, check the indexing on the field. If it is turned off it
could be causing the field to update across record set, but this is certainly
not the correct way to manage modification dates anyway. The field should be
manually entered with auto-entry options set.

Hope this makes sense. If, please get back to me.

Re: Filemaker Transfer to Different Computer

2012-07-26 Thread Peter Hinchliffe

 Hi everyone

We have owned Filemaker for years, Version 11 is installed on Graham's iMac
but he has rarely used it.

Now I would like to use it on my computer, I have stacks of databases in
FoxPro on my G4 and I would like to have the data in a form I can access on
 my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard).

If we had discs it would be simple to take it off the iMac and then install
on the MacBook Pro but the latest update was a download. How do I go about
transferring it or do I need to buy another copy? I hope not, eventually I
shall have to abandon the apps that use Rosetta which will be expensive to
 replace.

The alternative is to put the data in Excel but that does not have the same
 capacity for manipulating the data.

Best wishes to all from Diana

There are several issues at play here. First of all, Filemaker is not going to
be able to use your FoxPro databases directly. They will have to be converted
first, and this can be a huge undertaking. You will need to export to Excel or
delimited text files, then import into Filemaker, then there's the whole
business of making then useable - layouts, scripts, calculations and
relationships all need to be created and tested.

Then there's the question of software validation. You will absolutely need the
correct installation code which was provided with Graeme's original install. If
you don't have the discs this is going to be a problem. Transferring the
software is not a big deal: simply copy the Filemaker Pro folder from Graeme's
Applications folder to yours either across a network or via a USB drive, or
even burning to a CD if there's nothing else. I'm not sure about recent
versions, but this used to be a problem with earlier versions of Filemaker
since certain components had to be installed to a lower level of the system
than the User Domain. I think Filemaker 11 is more self-contained, but I'm not
100% certain, since I have only ever used the installer.

If you can't find that installation code you're in trouble before you begin.
The only place you'll find it is with the original installation CD. If you can
find that then just run the installer on your computer and enter the code when
prompted. This is by far the most preferred method of installing Filemaker Pro.

I apologise if I have misunderstood certain aspects of your post. If there's
any more help I can give I will be glad to do so.

PS: an alternative suggestion - if your FoxPro databases are flat files (ie,
non-relational) and fairly simple in structure, you might consider exporting to
to Excel or text file (as you will have to anyway) and importing into Bento.
It's much cheaper, and may provide you with much of the power you want that
Excel certainly won't provide. You also won't have the problem of software
validation. You can download a trial version of Bento from Filemaker's web site
for testing.

Re: Filemaker 12 released

2012-04-04 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
Now that the cat's out of the bag (I've had a pre-release version for several
weeks), I can assure you that Filemaker 12 is the most significant new release
of Filemaker Pro since the change from FMP 6 to FMP 7. It also brings a change
in the underlying file format, to the point that FMP12 is not compatible with
previous versions, and old files need to be converted. Fortunately, this is
simple and quick. Filemaker 12 also requires, at minimum, an Intel-based
running Mac OS X 10.6. Previous versions of Filemaker cannot read Filemaker 12
files.

We will definitely be showing this off at the next meeting.

It's very easy to transfer the files via the iTunes interface using the USB
sync cable. You simply connect the device, go to the Apps tab, scroll to
the bottom where File Sharing apps are listed and make the transfer(s).
The files listed are of course those on the device (iPad, iPhone) and you
have the option of deleting the existing files if you want to update from the
MBP (select the files and hit the keyboard delete) and then use the Add
button to replace them from the MBP). Alternatively, use the Save To button
to transfer from the device to the MBP and you will be prompted to
overwrite/replace the existing file - this is what you aparently want to do -
 the transfer is very quick.

As you have already discovered this is not a sync process so if you have been
updating files on the MBP you will have to transfer the updated file back to
the device before you go off collecting more data - and so on…

One exciting development in this are comes from Seedcode in the form of GoZync

Not cheap (almost the cost of a new copy of Filemaker Pro! ) but probably worth

Re: Filemaker Go on and iPad

2011-07-30 Thread Peter Meyer

Hi Chris
It's very easy to transfer the files via the iTunes interface using the USB
sync cable. You simply connect the device, go to the Apps tab, scroll to the
bottom where File Sharing apps are listed and make the transfer(s).
The files listed are of course those on the device (iPad, iPhone) and you have
the option of deleting the existing files if you want to update from the MBP
(select the files and hit the keyboard delete) and then use the Add button
to replace them from the MBP). Alternatively, use the Save To button to
transfer from the device to the MBP and you will be prompted to
overwrite/replace the existing file - this is what you aparently want to do -
the transfer is very quick.

As you have already discovered this is not a sync process so if you have been
updating files on the MBP you will have to transfer the updated file back to
the device before you go off collecting more data - and so on…

I was going to send this to Peter H, but then though there could be others who

Yes, Filemaker Mobile was a Palm application, and was dropped by Filemaker
several years ago. The iOS version is Filemaker Go, a far different kettle of
fish! Filemaker Mobile was only ever a hollow shell of its desktop version,
whereas Filemaker Go shares almost all of the same features as the desktop
version.

I know the problem you're talking about, and it's not restricted to PDFs. It

press Cmd-Z immediately after the drop, while the cursor is still in the field.
The text will change to the default font of the field.

Preview and Filemaker

2010-12-05 Thread Bill Parker

I have a task that requires transferring details of academic papers
from PDFs into Filemaker Pro ( Ver 11).

I have found that no matter what I do, the last step will not work
with a Preview PDF but will work with Adobe 8 Pro PDF.

Is there anyway I can switch off Preview temporarily?

Hi Bill,

Do you mean you wish to have Adobe Acrobat Professional.app (8.) as the default
application to open all PDFs?
If so:
1. Highlight a PDF
2. Go to File Get Info
3. Select Adobe Acrobat Professional.app (8.0) (or what version you have)
4. Click Change All

If this isn't what you mean please post back.

Cheers,

I have not experienced this at all. I have never felt the need to resort to
Acrobat when dealing with PDFs in Filemaker Pro (ver 11 or any other). What is
it that's not working? Is the container field simply not accepting the PDF, or
is that the PDF does not open once inserted?

I have Ronni's suggestion (thanks) to hand I will use that if needs

all need some degree of reading ( lazy authors who do not provide
their own keywords...!) I need smooth travel.

It sounds like you have the field defined as a number field (in which case
leading zeros would be meaningless) - a text field would allow leading zeros.

Re: Filemaker Pro upgrades

Hi Peter

Thanks for the details on the upgrade to FMPro V 11 as I think I am
eligible with version 8 advanced.

I would like to buy the Box set and have been through the store up to
the Shopping Cart screen.
However it has an item called PROMO CODE with a box to include text or
numbers I assume. I actually dont know what to include in there (if
anything) before I continue with the purchase? Do I have to put in the
licence key for FMPro 8 or something else? Do I need to do this to be
eligible for the upgrade? How can I check if I am eligible before I
buy just to make sure?

I sent Filemaker an email with the above info but havnt heard boo.

Are you able to advise me on this Pete?

Inasmuch as I generally recommend using the latest version of your
mission-critical software, my answer would be Yes. However, if
you're not reall in the position of a dedicated Filemaker developer,
or your current solution doing everything you want, Filemaker 10 is
fine. There are several significant improvements in Filemaker 11
even for the user however, most notably being Saved Finds, a new
Inspector palette, a new Quick Find field (performs a Google-like
search on you entire database in the one field) and a new Quick
Reports tool in Table View. Are are many more improvements under
hood as well, though many of them are refinements of features
introduced in Filemaker 10. You can go to http://
www.filemaker.com.au for full details.

The really big thing with Filemaker 11 is that it s now a full Cocoa-

standing features work, but by and large it's the same package
you're used to.

However it has an item called PROMO CODE with a box to include text

Inasmuch as I generally recommend using the latest version of your

you're not reall in the position of a dedicated Filemaker developer,
or your current solution doing everything you want, Filemaker 10 is

The really big thing with Filemaker 11 is that it s now a full

standing features work, but by and large it's the same package
 you're used to.

Filemaker Pro upgrades

2010-08-25 Thread Peter Hinchliffe

If you are a user of Filemaker Pro and have not upgraded for a while, you
should be aware that as from 23 September 2010, Filemaker is discontinuing both
support and upgrade rights for versions 8.0 and 8.5 of FileMaker Pro, Pro
Advanced and Server 8. Until that date, the cost of upgrading to Filemaker 11
is about 60% of the new purchase price. After September 23 there will be no
upgrade path from versions previous to 9.0. You will have to pay full price to
upgrade from these versions.

There is a prescribed best practice approach to convert from .fp6
files. If your existing solution contains just a single file,
simply drop its icon onto the Filemaker 11 application icon in the
dock (or wherever else you can see it). If your solution relies on
multiple files strung together with relationships, select ALL of
the files involved and drop them together onto the Filemaker ii
icon. It's very important that you select every file in this
instance if you want ot avoid headaches down the track. In either
case, Filemaker will warn you that the files were created with an
earlier version of Filemaker Pro, and save them all as .fp7 files
in a location you specify. Filemaker 11 will do all the conversion
necessary. You do not need Filemaker 7 or 8. The .fp7 file
extension is still the filename extension used for Filemaker 11
files, which is in keeping with all previous major upgrade changes
with Filemaker Pro.

Bear in mind that while a multi-file solution will be copied
faithfully, with all files in their correct location and all
relationships honoured, Filemaker Pro has, since Filemaker 7,
supported the practice of storing multiple tables within a single
file. The ramifications of this approach for the way you think
about using Filemaker are far too numerous to go into here, but
there are some excellent resources on Filemaker's site which
explain it all.

Then, once I download FM Go to the ipad (is that any model with
wireless?) I have to redo my mobile database using Go, is that
right? (rather than uploading the old version?).
Can this new Go database be appended to the main db on the MBPro?
If so that would be just fantastic.

Just as a small example for my own part, I have written a small
Filemaker file which keeps track of the various tips, techniques,
helpful emails, websites, etc that I come across on a daily basis.
I now have several years' worth of information stored in it, but it
has, naturally enough, been written for use on my standard Macs,
ie, my iMac and my Macbook Pro. I am now using that identical file
on my iPhone 4. I get the same layouts, all the scripts work the
same, and I have full search on any field I want. It's the same
database. All that was necessary was to use iTunes to copy the file
to the iPhone. There was nothing else to do.

I also have my business solution, which I also wrote in Filemaker,
being served on my iMac. Filemaker Go picks this up through the
wireless network and it works perfectly.

If I have multiple ipads (for separate jobs offshore) can I use
the one version of Go and database?

The current iteration if Filemaker Pro does not support
synchronisation, although that's not to say it might not in the
future, and Filemaker aren't saying. For the time being, therefore,
if you have multiple copies of the same file in use at once, data
management is problem you will have to solve for yourself.
Filemaker Go is still so new that most of the FM Developer
community is working on the problem, so I think solutions and
strategies will emerge over time.

ipad and filemaker

2010-08-22 Thread Chris Burton

Hi Way muggers

I hope you are all well and recovered from the election weekend!

I have a question regarding the use of Filemaker mobile (or similar)
on the ipad. Is it possible to do so I can use it as a data collection
device and download to the main database on the laptop via Bluetooth?

I have previously had Palm T3 devices to which I have loaded my mobile
database and used them offshore for data collation. I understand
Filemaker is up to about version 10 now and my filemaker database is
in version 6! Would I be able to transfer into the latest version both
on my laptop and an ipad to make it work?

Im looking to reduce all paper datasheet use and going electronic. The
T3 was really great and easy to use, but after about 5 years they just
stopped! I now hate the huge amount of paper data forms and time it
takes for transcribing the data.

If this is possible, I would imagine the base model ipad would be
suitable?

Thanks for any advice on this

Kindest regards

Chris

You will first of all need to upgrade your computer's version of Filemaker. The
latest version is Filemaker Pro 11, so that's what you'll buy when you upgrade.
The version on your computer is not really that important, but it must be
version 7 or later. What IS important is that your Filemaker files are
converted to .fp7 files, and this is what you'll initially use the desktop
version for.

You will then download Filemaker Go from the iTunes store. This costs around
$47 or so, and is a very full-featured version of the Desktop version. It does
have limitations in that you can't create new databases with it, but you will
find it is much more powerful than the old Filemaker Mobile in that it uses the
screens and scripts that you have designed, rather than a predefined
mobile-specific template. All your relationships, portals, scripts (with a few
limitations) are respected as well. Filemaker have done a superb job with this.
Can't wait for version 2.

Unfortunately you will have to spend some money to get all this working, but
let's face it: Filemaker 7 is now so old that it is no longer supported by
Filemaker, and as for Filemaker 6, it's as though that never existed. It's no
longer even on the radar.

specific template. All your relationships, portals, scripts (with a
few limitations) are respected as well. Filemaker have done a superb
job with this. Can't wait for version 2.

Unfortunately you will have to spend some money to get all this
working, but let's face it: Filemaker 7 is now so old that it is no
longer supported by Filemaker, and as for Filemaker 6, it's as
though that never existed. It's no longer even on the radar.

FileMaker Developer Wanted

2009-06-08 Thread Rob Findlay
Anyone out there want some paid Filemaker work transferring data from
Lotus to Filemaker?
The Filemaker database already exists and was transferred out to
Lotus. Now they want it back in Filemaker (go figure) so it would
involved transferring all the data created since the Lotus changeover
back in to Filemaker. Our usual developer is on long service so I'm
looking for a Pro to get it done. Deadline is mid July. The database
will be running (eventually) on Filemaker Server V9.

Contact me off-list if you are interested and have the skills. I'll be
recommending you to our client and coordinating other aspects of a
system upgrade so I have guarantee the work will be done in a timely
and professional manner so no wanna be's please.

There are several templates which come with Filemaker Pro, each of
which will do part of what you want, but none which will do it all. To
do it all, you will have to learn enough about Filemaker Pro to do it
yourself, or pay someone to do it for you.

Alternatively, you could look at something like http://www.briefcase.net.au/
. This is an all-purpose job management system written entirely in
FMP. It's a little expensive at $495, but it seems to be well-written,
and costs a lot less than paying someone to develop a solution for
you. You can download a 30-day trial and see it it suits.

Yes, you could do it on FileMaker, or try some of the commercial

Not sure how it goes for tracking multiple employees though.

Also, I believe Bento has a time billing template.

That's the problem for me. Seeing that I don't really have the need
for FM on my iPhone, $90 ($US to boot!) is a pretty hefty testing fee.
I admit the product looks nice though.

Re: Filemaker on the iPhone or iPod Touch - FMTouch

2009-02-05 Thread Peter Meyer
Hi Derek - yes I have it and there are a few 'issues' despite all
their marketing hype:
you _do_ need to redesign your layouts for the smaller screen of
course but FMtouch doesn't listen to their own guidelines (well they
aren't exactly their own but are recommended by them). There is a
table view available on FM-touch that is almost unreadable because of
the font size but also their use of margins; or lack of them. But
table views translated to FMtouch behave more like List-view layouts
with only one record viewable at a time. I haven't chased this up on
any of the forums yet.

Synch with a reasonable sized DB does take time - I have a DB with
about 36k records in one of its tables and the initial sync takes
probably 20min although I haven't timed it precisely, preferring to
let it get on with it. Any changes in your layouts involve wiping all
the data and resynching.

I have another DB that really should be in the main DB but hasn't got
there yet mainly because it works quite fine that way as an external
DB on the laptop; not so on FMtouch. So until I sort that out I am
living with missing fields. Some fields don't behave as you'd like
either: I have a scrollable text field that is very unpredictable on
the iPhone. The scroll bar is not visible so there is considerable
frustration in jumping between edit mode and browse when you try to
read it; for some reason it seems to have become fixed at about 2
lines in the FMtouch version of the layout and there also seems to be
a problem with moving between records with the text in that field
persisting from one record to the next! Weird stuff!

Scripting and calculated fields are not fully supported as you'll know
but they are improving. And there is integration with resident apps
like your address book and Mail; and Safari if you want it.

So far I am only using FMtouch to look stuff up not to edit or add
records so my needs are pretty simple but even so I have a way to go
before I can say I'm happy with it…

I suppose on the positive side (for me) - it only cost $75 when I
bought it ;)

And I've grown fonder of FM Mobile (in all its simplicity) that I
still use occasionally on the Palm

Hi Peter,

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

One particular layout I was trying to achieve had more fields than
records!

Your response forced me to go back and have another look at how I
could achieve what I needed. The little grey cells, to quote Hercule
Poirot eventually kicked in. I have increased the depth of the body
and stacked the fields for a record. The end result will do the trick.

Filemaker's Layout Mode does not support this in any way. In fact
I'm struggling to think of any database tool that does. By their
very nature, you are always going to have many more records than
fields, so a vertical arrangement of records displaying a set number
of fields (allowing endless scrolling) is the natural and obvious
approach. It's also much easier to make sense of.

Do you have any examples of the model you are trying to reproduce?

Do you have any examples of the model you are trying to reproduce?

Filemaker help please

2008-06-25 Thread wyvern

hi Folks

under pressure a few years ago i changed from Panorama to Filemaker
and although it does the job i find it so frustrating at times.

The biggest headache is with searches... with Panorama I could search
for say 'big' and not 'red' and not 'green' but with Filemaker i have
to search big and blue, big and white, big and yellow, big and
brownetc etc etc. The again with Panorama if i had forgotten
something i could then search within the results found but with
Filemaker i have to start again.

Anyway that's how it seems to me...i would love or someone to tell me
i'm wrong and point me to something i've missed as i have a decision
to make either convert my database back to Panorama or upgrade to
Filemaker 9

Of course any other advice welcome

When you are performing a (non-scripted) search in Filemaker, make
sure you have the grey status area exposed on the left hand side of
the window. Enter Find Mode, and type (using your example) big into
your search field. Go to the Requests Menu and choose Add New
Request. Type red into your search field and click the Omit
checkbox in the Status Area. To the same for every other term you wish
to omit from the search.

The Filemaker Help covers this quite well (Finding records except
those matching criteria, for example).

As Peter Hinchclife has said you can include multiple 'omit' requests

and, of course you can omit multiple records from a found set after
sorting it; I don't know if you can 'extend a found set' by doing
doing a search using the 'omit' criterion. (I should try it?)

Filemaker Error 13 says that an object or file is in use. I presume
you have tried stopping and starting Filemaker Server. Have you tried
closing the server and opening the files directly into Filemaker?
There may be some scripts not executing completely, active fields,

FileMaker Pro 9.0v2 update delivers Leopard compatibility and more

FileMaker has released FileMaker Pro 9.0v2 and FileMaker Pro 9.0v2
Advanced, available now via a
downloadable update. The 9.0v2 update provides compatibility with
Mac OS X Leopard as described below,

and other features, and is recommended for all users.

Here is a list of other fixes in the 9.0v2 update that developers
will be most interested in:

Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard):
The application no longer crashes when creating files if the system
language and region do not match.

General Fixes:
Mac OS X: Get(SystemVersion) now returns the correct version on Mac
OS X operating systems ending with

double digit revision numbers, i.e. 10.4.10.

The database consistency check initiated on launch will no longer
incorrectly report that a database is damaged

for some databases that can be opened and used without any problems.

Printing Fixes:
The update addresses issues which cause the application to crash
when a page range is specified.

Relationships:
A relationship with a global field now returns all related records
if the value of the other key is empty.

For a complete list of fixes please refer to the updater Read Me or
FileMaker downloads at

http://www.filemaker.com/support/downloads/index.html

Click here for the details and to download the FileMaker Pro 9.0v2
and FileMaker Pro 9.0v2 Advanced

Leopard update now.

Please note that this update does not fix issues with the FileMaker
Pro 9 Instant Web Publishing (IWP) feature
running on Leopard. We intend to make IWP compatible with Leopard
in an update expected in December 2007.

We expect to deliver a Leopard compatibility update for our Server
products in early 2008. FileMaker Server 9 and
FileMaker Server 9 Advanced currently do not deploy properly on
Leopard. In the meantime, FileMaker Pro 9 and
FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced clients running on Leopard do work with
FileMaker Server and Server Advanced running

on Tiger or earlier versions of Mac OS X.

For timely news on the availability of compatibility updates for
IWP, and for FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker

Server 9 Advanced, please subscribe to FileMaker News.

Maybe an automator script ...

Subject: Filemaker Pro Migration Question

Hey all,

This is a question which should have a fairly obvious answer, however I
require confirmation from external sources regarding this specific
situation.

Previously we had an OS X fileserver for all the macs to access their data.
(shared via AFP). Within one of the specific group folders lies a bunch of
Filemaker Pro 6 and 8 databases. These databases are all interlinked within
various folder and subfolders, spread all throughout the hierarchy of this
specific group folder.

Recently we migrated all the Mac data onto a Windows File Server (for
centralized storage). The mac data is being shared via AFP using Extreme Z
IP. In migrating the data, it seems that the relationships between the
filemaker pro 6 files were lost, and therefore these files needed to be
re-linked manually. I believe this is because filemaker pro 6 used hard
links for relationships, as opposed to filemaker pro 8 which uses relative
paths (?).

What I would like to find out is if there is an easy or quick way to re-link
all the filemaker pro 6 files, when migrating the data from one file server
to another, or whether the only option is to manually re-define the broken
relationships?

And if we were to migrate this data again to a different server in the
future, and they weren't upgraded to version 8, are we likely to face this
issue again?

Should I infer from this that you are not serving the files from
Filemaker Server? If this is the case, now is the time to do it. I
think the problem stem from the fact that your solution files are
spread between various folders and subfolders. The file reference
structure on Windows is different from that on Mac, so the Mac path
descriptions won't make sense to Windows and will have to be re-
defined for each path. It is MUCH better to keep all your FMP files
in the same folder. You just have to look at the various file
references in your ,fp7 files to see the problem. Without knowing
more of the details of your setup it is difficult to comment further.

to another, or whether the only option is to manually re-define the broken
relationships?

And if we were to migrate this data again to a different server in the
future, and they weren't upgraded to version 8, are we likely to face this
issue again?

Filemaker Developer needed

2007-06-14 Thread Rod Blitvich
Hi WAMUGers
The Science Teachers Assn of WA is looking at getting a developer to update
their database.
Please do you have any suggestions apart from Peter Hinchcliffe who is
snowed under?

³ supplier of a membership database for our association. STAWA is an
association of  science teachers in WA based in Osborne Park. We currently
run a mac network with a Filemaker Pro database that does not meet our
current needs. I invite you to submit a quote for the development and supply
of a membership database that has the capability of talking to our new
website and our MYOB accounts package. ³

FileMaker 7 - hair turning grey

2007-04-17 Thread Oldham, Toby

For some reason, there seems to be no method of specifying the target table
I want to import data into (from another FileMaker file).

After some online searching, it seems obvious the function is included in
FileMaker 8 ... I just can't find the function in 7. It seems completely
insane that I can't choose which table I want to import data into ... If
anyone knows what I'm doing wrong I'd really appreciate a heads up.

Cheers,
Tobes.

In Filemaker 7 and later, layouts and tables are inextricably
linked, to the point that when you create a new table in a Filemaker
file, a new default layout for that table is also created. You simply
need to make sure that you are on that layout (or another layout
based on that table) when you import the data.

What version of Filemaker are you using? Things are very different
between version 6 or earlier, and version 7 or later.

I have seen some incredibly complex solutions to this problem, but I

Int ( (Get ( CurrentDate ) - Birthdate) / 365.25 )

Re: Filemaker

2005-12-08 Thread Peter Meyer
no it still has the problem - it's fine with calculating age when the
DOB is in a normal year but fails for, say 1940 [a case of you have
to have been born yesterday to have a birthday today :^)]

i hadn't tried *Int* but had used other functions (eg floor,
truncate) with
 ( (Get ( CurrentDate ) - Birthdate) / 365.25 ) - but there
presumably wouldn't be any reason to expect that to be the offending
part anyway?

and i have also checked out the pre-March aspects now and no, it
doesn't disappear there; just shifts the problem from the leap-year
DOBs to the others; except for Feb 29!

as you imply: maybe the *solution* is to do something else and
somehow flag the likely problem dates on the instance of a particular
calculation - and resort to a bit of manual, sorry - mental arithmetic!

thanks anyway…

i haven't tested this for birth-dates pre-Feb 29 but would suspect
they might be OK?

(i even tried to make allowance for the 100-year discrepancy)

is this a FM problem per se?
or just my own inadequacy?
is there a simple solution or does it require a somewhat complex
calculation to account for leap-years?

(Excel also seems to have the same problem.)

incidentally, if anyone would like a copy of FMpro 6, i have one
(with manuals etc) - quite legitimate as i upgraded to 8 with a full
version.

All you have to do is drop the Excel speadsheet onto the Filemaker
Application Icon. It will open a wizard to match fields and away you go.

Re: FileMaker Pro help please

2005-11-10 Thread Toby Oldham

Hi Yvonne,

I think it displays .fp5 so it'll run on FM server 5.5 . There is no
Server version 6, it jumps from 5.5 to 7, and version 7 converts the
databases so that FileMaker 6 can't use them.

In a less confusing nutshell:
- FileMaker 6 files work with FileMaker Server 5.5
- FileMaker 7 files work with FileMaker Server 7

I think FileMaker 6 allows you to include containers for graphics ...
any developers out there clarified that for you yet?

Cheers,
Tobes.
