Re: [wsjt-devel] Frequency doesn't shift when changing configurations

Neil,
It works for me with Configurations name "FT8 Config" & "JT65-JT9 Config".
Not sure why a renaming would make it work. All I know is it works for me @
r7782.

Did a build to bring my program up to r7782, works the same. Switch
config to the FT8 one, changes the freq. Switch back to the default
(JT65/JT9) configuration, no change in frequency. As I mentioned
before, it appears that on the switch from the default to the saved
config for FT8, the system verifies the mode and makes the change.
Going back to the default it doesn't.

I can live with it, but should it do that ??

Hi guys, I've been subscribed to this list only since late April, so I'm

a time- and energy-consuming bout with lymphoma in 2014, so I'm

have some catching up to do!)

Among other things I see that back in 2015 you found and fixed some bugs
in my Fano decoder, and I'd like to make sure I've nailed them all in my
own version. The only time I actually used it for a real application was
in my demodulator/decoder for the ISEE-3/ICE reboot project in 2014 and
I don't know if I found any or all of the same ones you did. They had to
do with off-by-one errors while searching the tail region of the tree.

I think I also caught wind of some errors in my Reed-Solomon
errors+erasures decoder, but by now you might have moved onto decoding
algorithms that weren't around when I did that.

He solved them quickly and in addition, tweaked many other things, and
explained them to me as he went.

When the QSO transitions to TX 2 or TX 3 the start time gets set.
Any double clicks on lines after that would also reset the start

If start time is not set by TX 2 or TX 3 then it will end up being
the stop time.

And does autoseq sequence to "TX 6" by itself? That would explain
why autoseq modes get their time reset.

Re: [wsjt-devel] build on debian stretch

2017-07-04 Thread ki7mt via wsjt-devel
Hello All,

There looks to be a fair bit of confusion around the names for readline. I
found several bugs that point to using:

libreadline-dev for Debian >= Stretch

You may need to enable a different repository to do that though.

https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=stretch=any=path
=contents=libreadline-dev

Debian is at top of the food chain so to speak. Ubuntu, Mint, and all the
derivative distros use the same control system for packaging (building) on
infrastructure servers. They use what's called a Debian Control file.
However, each release gets isolated to a specific set of packages. The names
of those packages can change from release to release (Wheezy --> Jessie -->
Stretch, etc)

You can use : apt-cache search , apt-cache show , apt-cache
policy , check the manifests for a release, or any number of methods to
track down package information on Debian based distro's.

Worst comes to worst, get on IRC => Debian Mentors, and ask there. Those
folks know their stuff well. You could also email the Debian developer
that's in charge of the package. If anyone knows the story, that person, or
persons, would have the latest scoop.

I never learned exactly how debian/ubuntu checks dependencies, so please
excuse this possibly silly question.

In some cases, might it not be possible simply to do:

ln -s libread5 libread6 (??)

I've encountered other situations where the only important difference
between the old and newer packages was the filename.

Hi Neil,

you need "Monitor returns to last used frequency" checked if you are
expecting WSJT-X to change frequency on startup or configuration switch
(in the destination configuration in the case of configuration switches).

UM .. how else do you respond when using JT65/JT9 .. I don't use the
buttons on TAB 2. Double clicking on a response in the RX window when
I'm calling CQ I agree with, that should start the QSO, but double
clicking in the TX window should not as its a normal way to trigger the
next dialog is a normal way to progress through the QSO.

Or am I missing something here?

In reply to your other post .. yes, I'm using JTSDK.

Again, I'm using Tab 2, not Tab 1. JT65/JT9 .. no auto sequencing.
Just double clicking to trigger the next response in the sequence.

On 7/3/2017 12:58 PM, Black Michael wrote:

Any double-clicks on lines will reset the start time to "unknown".

When the QSO transitions to TX 2 or TX 3 the start time gets set.
Any double clicks on lines after that would also reset the start
time. Tx 6 also resets start time.
If start time is not set by TX 2 or TX 3 then it will end up being
the stop time.

And does autoseq sequence to "TX 6" by itself? That would explain
why autoseq modes get their time reset.

I never learned exactly how debian/ubuntu checks dependencies, so please
excuse this possibly silly question.

In some cases, might it not be possible simply to do:

ln -s libread5 libread6 (??)

I've encountered other situations where the only important difference

Hi Phil,

I don't think WSJT-X itself has a libreadline dependency but Hamlib
does I believe. If you are using the DEB file from the WSJT-X home

The source package we release should build locally on other Linux

To reproduce:

1. Change to a different configuration. The system does not reset

2. Re-select band, program changes frequency.
3. Change to a different configuration. The system does not reset
the frequency.

4. Re-select the mode from the mode menu, program changes frequency.

I'm thinking that there's no command sent to the radio to change the
frequency from the last setting. I'm using DX Commander connected
to a KX3, controlling frequencies and tranmission.

Hi Neil,

Have you reset the working frequencies table since building with FT8
support or added some working frequencies for the bands you are using?

Yes, that was the first thing I did. As an aside, it may be a good idea
to add in the manual that when upgrading from a previous version to
reset the frequencies when in FT8 mode, as I found out the hard way
about doing that.

As a side note, I would not recommend using Commander as a rig control
intermediary with FT8 mode, it does not process CAT commands fast
enough to switch between Rx and Tx promptly and you will have
truncated Tx messages. Truncated Tx messages will reduce the
likelihood your messages being decoded.

I followed that thread with Dave, and have been adjusting the Commander
settings for my KX3. I really would hate to have to include rig
control changes in any configuration for FT8 .

Hi Phil,

I don't think WSJT-X itself has a libreadline dependency but Hamlib does
I believe. If you are using the DEB file from the WSJT-X home page or
from the SourceForge files area you should note that package is released
only as a stop gap until our Linux package maintainers get there thing
done. It is built for the current LTS Ubuntu distribution (16.04 LTS)
and s not necessarily expected to work on other distributions.

The source package we release should build locally on other Linux
distros, have you tried that? You may have to install some dependencies
of course.

Thanks for your reply. Putting the files on a cloud site will work for me
when I need to send files to the team at some time in the future.
In this case, the weak signal sequences (S1 or lower) decoded, but the
strong signal sequences (S5 to S6) from the same station did not decode.
Both the weak and strong signal sequences had reasonably constant strengths
throughout the sequences, with no fades and no MS pings. WSJT-X release was
r.
An example of two .WAV files from a QSO where a strong signal does not
decode yet anther weaker one does sounds like one of the categories that
should be reported. An example with .WAV files would be helpful.

As the FT8 decoder is still under development, we would expect you to
try decoding such saved .WAV files with the latest revision of WSJT-X
before raising an issue as there may have been recent changes that
rectify the issue.

Hi Neil,

I forgot to mention that the two options in WSJT-X "Settings->General"
"Monitor off at startup" and "Monitor returns to last used frequency"
control what happens when you start WSJT-X. Switching configurations is
equivalent to starting WSJT-X again.

To reproduce:

1. Change to a different configuration. The system does not reset
the frequency.

2. Re-select band, program changes frequency.
3. Change to a different configuration. The system does not reset
the frequency.

4. Re-select the mode from the mode menu, program changes frequency.

I'm thinking that there's no command sent to the radio to change the
frequency from the last setting. I'm using DX Commander connected to
a KX3, controlling frequencies and tranmission.

Hi Neil,

Have you reset the working frequencies table since building with FT8
support or added some working frequencies for the bands you are using?

As a side note, I would not recommend using Commander as a rig control
intermediary with FT8 mode, it does not process CAT commands fast enough
to switch between Rx and Tx promptly and you will have truncated Tx
messages. Truncated Tx messages will reduce the likelihood your messages
being decoded.

I've reproduced this partly on my IC-706MKIIG using r going from

It also does not let me open the drop down to switch bands until I
switch back to JT mode. This means that to operate FT8, I have to
switch to FT mode, then manually move the frequency using the VFO dial
on the rig. Switching back to JT restores the frequency and band
switch functionality.

Hi Jordan,

that sounds like a different issue from the one that Neil is reporting.
Are you switching configurations from "Menu->Configurations" to switch
between FT8 and other modes?

Have you reset the suggested working frequencies list since building a
version with FT8? If not then you probably need to or add some
frequencies for FT8 to the "Settings->Frequencies->Working Frequencies"
table. WSJT-X can only select a frequency for a mode and band if there
is one set up.

Re: [wsjt-devel] FT8 Feature Request

2017-07-04 Thread Richard Lamont
I agree with Greg.

FT8 combines the best of 'slow' and 'fast' modes but operationally it's
quite challenging because there's a lot of information to absorb and
very little thinking time. More automation is appropriate, IMHO.

As far as grabbing a response to a CQ from the stack goes, for general
DXing it might be nice if instead of grabbing the first off the stack,
it gives priority to (1) unworked DXCC entities, (2) unworked callsigns,
(3) anyone else. Just a thought.

Also, for stations responding to a CQ, it would be helpful to disable
the TX if the CQing station has responded to someone else.

[wsjt-devel] Wide Graph (7781 - W10)

2017-07-04 Thread Erik -

Trivial matter: uncheck the box labelled 'Control' to stop displaying the wide
graph controls - - when WSJT-X is restarted, the controls remain hidden but
there is the small issue that the box has become checked.

Re: [wsjt-devel] FT8 Feature Request

2017-07-04 Thread Erik -
I'd second Greg's request.

Also, is there something I haven't set that is preventing replies to my
callsign appearing in the RX Frequency pane? As it is now, they only appear in
the Band Activity pane. Yesterday evening (EU Time), 20m was so busy with FT8
that I had to wait for a lot of scrolling to stop before I could click on a
call that had replied to me. This meant my TX started a few seconds into the TX
period and that seemed to be to the detriment of being decoded by the
responding stn. I was looking for the one line response on the right hand side
but it only appeared after I had managed to click on the call on the left side.

Hi Joe, All,

After a brief stint in calling CQ, I soon realized my reflexes with the ole
mouse buttons are not what they used to be. I guess I've not been participating
in enough RTTY contests :-) In any case:

When in RUN mode (calling CQ):
- Would it be possible to assign a single hot-key to grab the First-In Response
to a CQ ?
- Additionally, what about a combination of First-In-First-Out /
Last-In-First-Out check boxes that grabs a response off the stack?
- Maybe an ESM (Enter Sends Message / Right Click ) sends the message from the
Band / Rx Frequency grids
- Lastly, maybe a way to quickly enable / disable ( just in the Band Activity /
Rx Activity) only the responses that contain MY_CALL

As this is a fast mode with HF contest potential, the items above are well
received in the RTTY community in several major programs.

I'm finding it difficult to focus on the RX box for responses, click on the
responder, and not grab the wrong call, a;; within a second or so. I could only
imagine how that would be after 24hrs of contesting. I've miss-fired on this
several times already. It could be just me, and I've not been operating fast
modes for a while.

Anyways, just a few thoughts to ponder.
