All down to space on the front panel, you can set the gain while you're cueing up and shouldn't need to tweak it, whereas the EQs, sends, filter etc. all need to be closer to hand while in the mix. Before I got a Xone 32 I thought it was a stupid place to have the gains, but after a week or so of

I'm not convinced - although what do I know, not being a dj? No readily accessible trims means you can't really use volume as an effect as much as you might. Also, as for myself, when I do play, I tend to play quite a bit of old records - I mean over ten years old - which are often 'quiet'

Doesn't matter if you turn the amps down, you'd still have a distorted signal coming off the mixer if the gains were red-lining- but it's still irritating as hell not to have gains easily accessible on the mixer to balance the levels properly. Most clubs also have limiters to prevent crap DJs
