and not supposed to be. If that offends,
so be it, but I know that UR have their reasons for doing things...
phred
And don't forget Santonio (Echols), who was involved in a lot of really
excellent records...
phred
. , and it
gave me increased appreciation for the good American stores like Record
Time, Tweekin (SF) and so on.
phred
that is overlooked is that mix shows had a big impact in
both cities, but they functioned somewhat differently.
Everyone wants a single source for everything in their origin
myths. Here's a classic example of why things don't go
that simply.
phred
techno ones.
phred
, Stacey Pullen is at the same Fabric tonight
(in the big room, though, I believe), but I don't think I want to deal
with the weekend masses again...
phred
I know John Howard pretty well. He normally plays very jazzy house,
pretty swinging stuff.
John has also been sometime columnist for XLR8R magazine.
phred
! A little dusting, anyway. You 313ers
wouldn't even notice...
phred
, with as many different records as are out there, I see no
reason at all to hold back, in fact, my idea is you want to promote the good
records so that people will raise their expectaions generally for what gets
played :)

We are Phuture - Phuture (that DAMN rocketship track my friend M always said)
Two Fatt Guitars - Direckt (probably the biggest of all in 92-93)

Raincry - God Within
Nervous Acid - Bobby Konders

I think the FRED 3 of 313 (that would be the Kooky Scientist, Mr. McMurry
and of course moi) should get together and remixed FRED 3 !

Saturday the 30th.
I may need to be in the house :)

140 bpm +/- and have it *jump* -- that's what to use.
phred
That's a *great* lineup!
Fred
Detroit, seeing that.
Something happened in the 1980s, bad as they were, to bond people
together or at least those willing to open the doors a bit.
Didn't see much of that feeling at the DEMF, which was its own other
quite wonderful thing. But one leads to the other, in a way.
phred
PS Picked up
the looks on some of those faces :)
I think +10 or even +12 would work for turntables that have been
'altered.'
But my favorite speed to play it at is -2. Then if you're on a
*really* loud system it sounds like the Voice of the Cosmos.
phred
, Theo Parrish, Minx, Norm Talley, Mike Grant, KDJ, Huck,
Rick Wilhite, and more. I made a beeline to the Ken Collier mix...
Can you tell I have a new audio card?!

into what it's like working for Sony and where
their development interests are going.
Maybe it's a surprise to some, but there are people working for very
large companies who are not evil ogres.

Pitch sound very compatible with
my favorite Detroit house and techno.

So, I have a suggestion.
Let's stop talking about other people's personal lives, let's stop talking
about the motivations for talking about other people's personal lives,
and let's remember some wise advice a friend of mine gave me:
Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.
phred
some random walking-around person stating things about
YOUR personal affairs to a public forum, no matter what it was or
what the context was?
This is a matter of respect and privacy.
All the rest is fronting.
out
phred
is that this doesn't work too well and, sadly, Jeff's
other idea is better. Unfortunately it's very hard to find
replacement copies even of fairly popular older tracks.
phred
to do something like this with style and taste. And definitely,
style is important!
phred
of how to surf genres and still keep a
cohesive musical flow. So: respect.
phred
I'm getting closer to deciding on going... Any others? Caravan from
Detroit, anyone?
The cheapest flights seem to require leaving on Christmas, which is
fine with me. I could see a week in the UK, maybe go north for a couple
days...
phred
I ordered tickets, so that means I probably have to go...!
Actually, I was thinking about a UK holiday over Christmas anyway.
phred
I had to miss this, most unfortunately, but I just wanted you all
to see how my San Francisco friends have taken up the grand tradition
of Detroit industrial zone party-throwing:

knowledgeable audiences), there is virtually
no knowledge of Rolando, his history, and even Jaguar itself out here.
They love the song itself, of course :)
phred
And tonight the Plus 8 Classics tour is at Spundae (1015 Folsom) in
San Francisco. And this Wednesday the 27th an in-store thing at
Record Time for free...
- phred (Technotourist Left Coast chapter)
Guess I've been out of the loop too much! Derrick remixing Jaguar,
UR remixing Expo 2K, what'll be next --
each by Gene Hunt and Wilhelm K. I may have missed
previous mentions of this; what's the story on D-Version?
phred
and says, you know, I really can mix or something to that effect :) After
everyone close in backed away a bit, things were fine after that, and he gace
us maybe not the totally banging stuff but pretty much, which is quite something
to see in San Francisco.
phred
bet on that, even though I don't gamble :)
phred
at DEMF watching the Direct Beat Assassins rip
it up.
As I've said before, there is so much great music from Detroit, but the
Octave One sound is right at the heart of my approach as a DJ.
phred
to go along with it just because you say so.
phred
It's a good record -- but does it spin from the center out like the
original?!
Fred
wasn't convinced by the astounding turnout
and support for the DEMF -- after it had sidetracked the permits for months
on end -- then I don't know what will. Detroit is a city ready to step
forward again, but will the politicians and business leaders let it?
phred
...
phred
the whole story. Without that part, though, the
story can never be complete.
phred
And don't forget Visions of Music on Serious Grooves, my favorite
Santonio track and the one most responsible for dragging me into the
Detroit music orbit.
phred
You know, it's one thing to act stupidly in public on a list like
313.
It's yet another to repost PRIVATE email. You are deserving of no
respect, [EMAIL PROTECTED].
And you will get none.

So danceextacy despises us but wants our money for his records? Make
me laugh, dude.
I'm out of this one...
phred
get trolls and
chain-yankers on 313 all the time. But we're still here and they,
by and large, are not.
phred
I have a simple rule when dealing with someone online who is doing an
uncanny impersonation of a write-only infobot. The temptation is very
great to engage them on their terms. Do not do this. Eventually they
will start being conversational, or go away.
phred
happen every weekend :)
But the smaller interesting events do, you just have to dig around.
phred
Two giants of our musical times passed from this life this week:
Tito Puente and Johnnie Taylor. Tito, the king of Latin jazz; Johnnie,
one of the truly great soul voices. Neither from Detroit, but both
capturing that same reaching-out, the same impatience with our own
shortcomings and the same
don't see it as being quite as pivotal as
others do, perhaps because of my own musical background. But even if
I did, it seems to me we should not be discouraging people here,
*especially* newbies, from expressing their honest opinions.
phred
Paul Johnson's 2 AM Music ep (Dance Mania 124) is definitely deep
or garage -- not DM's usual jackin' sound, to be sure.
He's a very talented producer, lots of good tracks in various subgenres.

The scheduling at the Underground stage on Monday fell apart due to
constant staging problems, from what I could tell. I'm not exactly
sure why the Pubahs got rescheduled, but those kinds of things happen.

Maybe someday they'll realize.

Thanks to the 313 list, and thanks to tha D.

Somehow I expect CC to make a performing appearance at
his own festival.
Meantime, to heck with the next DEMF, when there's the Gathering
of the Juggalos just two short months away!
United Airlines knew how much I lurve the concourse at

Matrix is on his way but don't know who/where the rest of y'all are.
phred
What day is this and does anyone know these djs?
Fred
Just got the Theorem v. Stewart Walker on Minus, btw -- NICEly done.
phred
I've seen Derrick Carter plays lots of times, and his style varies by
the crowd, not the venue in my experience. If it's a bunch of kids
he'll play hard as nails because that's about all they want.
Art Payne is still doing what he always does.
http://www.dmadance.com/urban/default.asp
Excuse me for stepping out and saying this, but Art is *da man*.
phred
Sunday night would be kewl. Isn't the 430 West on Saturday night?
That's a must-do for me.
This schedule is starting to look as full as the WMF, except without
panels :)
Dan Sicko quoted in the Freep! Will wonders never cease :)

Just exactly the right thing, at the right time, from the right guy, Chuck D:
The last straw was the CD period, when labels increased
their markup without raising artists' royalties in kind. At the
same time, record companies created the concept of a
disposable artist; with jacked-up
for at least
a little while :)

Finally, when all someone can say is fuck this and fuck that, then
you have to wonder whether they actually have anything useful to observe.
Before I forget: crossposting is BAD. Don't do it.

, and coincidentally enough, clerks in both stores put the track
on while I was there on Saturday (and not because I asked for it). I think
this is a sign that word is getting around and there's a curiosity factor
involved.
Joe Rice also did a nice write-up in the new XLR8R.
phred
It's a good record. I played it at the 313 party, of course. (Had to,
I just bought it at the Ferndale RT that afternoon!)
Of course, Kraftwerk only sound like themselves really, but I was reminded
of Moskow Disko as far as the sound of the electro mix I played.

Lazy and sloppy fools.

If these are up to the level of BNR 280 (Blackman Impact ep) then I
will be all *over* these new ones.
I also must say, speaking of brilliant recordings, Gary Martin's new
double-EP Basis (Teknotikaa GG-27) is all. of. that. Of course,
I've been a huge Gigi Galaxy fan for years anyway.

The only thing for sure if Sony or EMI took over Bertelsmann/BMG is
that quite a lot of roster bands, producers, authors and others from
both companies would be made redundant (as the Brits say). Every
single other such merger has been followed by a reduction in the
artist roster of both labels

I still think my favorite non-genre of all time is gabba handbag.
