I liked Ender's Game a lot; read it when it first came out in Analog,

For something similar take a look at C.H. Cherryh's Downbelow Station
or Rimrunners. Similar worlds. Avoid the fantasy novels by this author
though... one of the cases where one series is great (hard science)
