On returning from the dentist this noon, Jeanne said, “You will never guess
what was in the back yard a while ago – a Northern Goshawk.”
When I checked my email a few minutes later, there was a note from Mark
Peterson who lives nearby saying he had the bird there this morning. We have

Translation: American Birding Association Bird of the Year (the Evening
Grosbeak) was at Turkey Creek Ranch and the United States Air Force Academy
today, October 1st.
They are removing the picnic tables from the ranch for

What a day for woodpeckers. We saw five species travelling from San Isabel to
Beulah on CO Highway 78 today.
Just as we turned off CO Hwy 165 near San Isabel we saw two Northern Flickers.
Three-and-a-half miles further up the road we got fabulous views of a male
Williamson Sapsucker. A mile
at TCR included Mockingbird, Wild Turkey, and
corvids.
Congratulations to Tambria who saw FOUR LIFE BIRDS this morning. What could be

We got to Beidleman park/Sonderman park at about 10:30 this morning.
Thanks to Jeanne's great spot, we were also able to find the Prothonotary
Warbler at about 11:00 this morning in the same area listed by John Maynard in
his post.
A few YRWA were also in the vicinity. We did not venture out

stopped at Big Johnson at about 9:00am.
We also saw the Eared Grebes, two Bald Eagles, all the waterfowl he mentioned,

the year.

I am sorry for this late post but I just got home from Cripple Creek.
This morning Jeanne and I ventured up to Teller County, and while the area was
not what I would call birdy, the birds that were there were fun to see.
In Divide, we went to the same spot we went to last year (directions
This morning (1/6), at about 9am.m. Jeanne and I made our way to Harvest Road
east of Barr Lake. We drove up and down the road for about 20 minutes then
stopped in front of 14141 Harvest. We were soon joined by Kevin Cook and two of
his friends and shortly spotted the adult own in the field

After spending the night at Blackhawk, Jeanne and I got up early and headed for
Georgetown. We got there about 7:45am and started riding up and down Rose
street between 7th and 11th. At about 8:00am we pulled off onto 8th Street and
parked by a red house with a full feeder.

Today at 4:15pm, Jeanne and I stopped by Castlewood Canyon State Park on our
way to pick up a friend at DIA. Coming from Colorado Springs we took the south
entrance on the west side of the park (Castlewood Canyon Rd off Douglas County
Rd 11).

Wow. Jeanne and I were at Turkey Creek Ranch, south of Colorado Springs on
Hwy 115 for 4 hours today.
We have never seen anything like the Lewis's Woodpeckers at Turkey Creek
Ranch. We saw them in 3 different parts of the ranch, and I think the 35
number may have been close or a little low.
and the cranes were both a
beautiful rust color with the white and red on their heads quite visible.
All in all over 50 species today with very high numbers of ibis, cormorant, and
pelicans.
