   can't
never be released. Do an alpha release give us the chance to
   know if
the bits are good enough, get more feedback, and later decide
   what to
do. The truth is some people only test some artifacts after a
release. Do it as an alpha release means ... software that has
   just
been compiled and ready for its initial test inhouse. I
   think

   Hi,
Thank you Leonardo for volunteering in the release.
Yes, it would be good discussing the future.

I am still working on the project. Leonardo and I am the only
   ones
   at the
   moment.
I am trying to work on the project 1 night a week, so the
   progress
   is
slow. I think it will be like this for a while.
We have a few issues to fix / features to implement already
   in the
   issue
tracker, and I am going to add more. There isn't enough
   feedback,
   since I
guess Html5 stuff is still not supported by every browser and
   not
   everyone
can use them. So the user profile is more like enthusiasts
   who are
   experimenting with Html5.
What we could do is providing fallback for old browsers out
   of the
   box,
but it is really hard to implement.
About the future: there is a lot to do in this area and I am
   willing to
work, but I can say I can spare limited time.

That's the intention of this mail. I think we should do an
   alpha
release. I don't see reasons to block a release.

   I agree.
I am pretty sure a release is good for the project, more
   people
   will hear
about it; and hopefully we can get some feedback.

Re: [VOTE] Internal Incubator

2011-11-02 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Why incubator for Gsoc projects?
IMO that's wrong.

Move stuff like that to Labs: build code and get releases out (release
often, release early)
Once there is interest - by some community decide where to go:

There some options, like:
a) Going to the incubator - start to build a community around it ( the
new experimental code base)
b) if it makes sense, integrate it with existing MyFaces code (e.g.
partial state savings improvements etc)
(or make it Apache MyFaces subproject)

As I have attempted to point out elsewhere via email links (which
presumably went unfollowed), not only is this problematic; per
Incubator PMC consensus it is downright unacceptable.  You simply
can't have a mini-incubator so complete that it makes sense even to
use the *name* incubator.  PLEASE read [1] for background, or skip
directly to [2] (search for Some possible solutions) to know what IS
acceptable.  There is no need for MyFaces to rehash my experiences on

One big open question for me is our html5 strategy at all.

Will the html5 components provide legacy html support themselfs?
Thus a calendar component will use jQuery (or whatever) calendar

hmm, guess there was a copy error

The correct staging repo URL looks like the

For testing it please add the following into your

        repositories
          repository
            idnexus

then upgrade your pom to use myfaces-2.0.5 and run

PMC chair of Apache MyFaces changed

2011-03-17 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

I am stepping back from being the Apache MyFaces PMC chair.
The MyFaces PMC did vote (internally) that Gerhard Petracek would
be a very good PMC chair.

Yesterday, during the board meeting, this has been made official.

Please join me in welcoming Gerhard as being the new PMC chair of
Apache MyFaces!

Congrats, Gerhard!

  Hi all,
I've deployed a new version of my webapp which demonstrates Html5
  component
  library at http://bit.ly/myfaces-html5-demo
This demo is based on the one presented in JavaOne, but I've removed
  all
third party Apache License incompatible code and resources. So, the
  demo
will be a subproject of the component library.
I've added several new components and features into the component lib
  and I
think now it is a good time for an alpha release.
Having a JIRA space would be a great first step.
PS: Sorry about the low speed of the demo, it is deployed on Google

The idea is to, essentially, build the site in Hudson and then have a

Has anyone else tried this?

If not, would anyone else be interested in the work once I'm done. I'm
hoping to hook up the bridge and Trinidad to this, but would be happy to do

I agree for a long term scenario.

Basically the default should be to disable this workaround and to make it
available via configuration. Btw, it seems that Oracle finally reacted and
will hopefully ship a fixed JVM 1.6 soon (no help for Java5 users of

The fix should also be done for 1.2, because many

 Hi,

I've some comments to the JVM bug for the bad number
 2.2250738585072012e-00308
 (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MYFACES-3024)

The problem occures for values which are very very low.
But the hotfix also rejects numbers like
2.22507385850720120e-10 which is not so abnormal.

Would it not be better, when the hotfix is configurable (be
default turned on), so that the admin can switch it off,
when the JVM bugfix is applied?

The fix should also be done for 1.2, because many
 productive systems using it.

 What do you think?

 Udo

 http://simple.apache-myfaces.cloudbees.net/
I deployed the WAR file as simple - Jan-Kees' application could live
 next to it.

It's also possible to use a managed/hosted MySQL database
 (DB-as-a-Service), at CloudBees.
 (mine uses Derby in-memory)

 Greetings,
 Matthias

 Hey,
Actually, I'm working on this example today. I have some spare time today,
because of issues at the office. So I hope to get some functionality done
and an initial commit out to Apache-Extras.
But I'm starting to find out that the biggest real world aspect of this
 example is the planning. :-)
When I can spend some hours, I make a lot of progress, so I'm just going to
try to dedicate some time to this.
So +1 on using the current demo until the other one is ready, or maybe keep
 both, if possible.

 2011/2/7 Matthias Wessendorf mat...@apache.org

 Hi,

Gerhard and I were on a different thread, with Sacha Labourey (CEO of
CloudBees), regarding Hudson/Jenkins builds hosted @CloudBees, the
Hudson admins at Apache are now in details with Sacha on that...

During that thread I asked Sacha if it would be possible for the
 Apache MyFaces project
(and others) to host their demos on CloudBees' Run@Cloud service.

 Here is what Sacha suggested:

 snip
I suggest, just sign up for the service, pick a proper domain name
(such as apache-myfaces) and forward me your registration e-mail and
I'll make sure you don't get billed (the service should stop being
free at the end of the month, that way we don't trigger a bill). Then,
after a month or so, we take a decision on whether that works for you
or not and how we could best move forward.
 /snip

The PMC already discussed this briefly and we thought it's a good
opertunity for us to show that Apache MyFaces is ready for the cloud!

Please note that this is NO replacement of our current demos, that are
 hosted
 by our friends from Irian!!

Last week there was a discussion about Jan-Kees' real-world example,
 which uses:
MyFaces/CDI/CoDI/JPA2 - This is very similar to [1].

Not sure how far Jan-Kees is, but sounds like it's ready soon.

IMO we should use that example there - if it takes a bit longer, we
 can go with [1],
 for the next few days.

 WDYT ?

 Matthias

Nice! and it even works with JSF :-)
Looking at the MyFaces (double) converter, I see
 Double.valueOf()
Now, I did a quick check, with Trinidad (disabled
client-side validation) and MyFaces (since Trinidad calls
 super.getAsObject()).
Entering 2.2250738585072012e-308 into a field, that
has a double converter is keeping my JVM _really_ busy ! :)

Ok, the hosted Maven3.0.2 works fine with the current version of our
pom (which now (kinda) requires m3).

Most important: the nightly builds works, as they worked before.

So, that part would be fixed - for now I am keeping this
improvement, at least temporary.
(I will keep 2006 open for a bit, even it looks like we solved it)

 I see two options:

Document it prominently in the release notes
Try to fake the parameter in Trinidad code as always being set.

I am not sure if (2) is feasible, but the advantage would be that the users
will not have to manually re-enable partial
state saving when we resolve the compatibility issues.

I am fine with (2), even if it's a bit hacky :-)

 --

 Status: Patch Available (was: Open)

FacesContextFactoryImpl's FacesContext (CacheRenderKit) needs to extend
  FacesContextWrapper not FacesContext

  Key: TRINIDAD-1996
  URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/TRINIDAD-1996
  Project: MyFaces Trinidad
   Issue Type: Bug
 Affects Versions: 2.0.0-alpha-2
 Reporter: Michael Freedman
  Attachments: FacesContextFactoryImpl.patch

Currently Trinidad's FacesContextFactoryImpl creates a FacesContext of type
CacheRenderKit (declared in same file). CacheRenderKit is declared as a
class that extends FacesContext. Instead it should extend
FacesContextWrapper. By not using the wrapper Trinidad breaks other
instances in the hierarchy (lower than it) as it misses the wrapper
  delegation model.
Note: When you make this change. also remove the now obsolete methods that
  merely delegate.
Testcase: Portlet Bridge TCK tests don't run unless this code is changed
  to extend the Wrapper.

Should we add a new JIRA project (MYFACESHTML5)
Or is it enough to have a HTML5 component ?

[ProjectStage] Enhancing the ProjectStage to contain DesignTime ?

2011-01-20 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

opening a ADF/Trinidad application in JDeveloper's I am seeing a
warning like this:

WARNING: Your environment is configured as production and Apache
Trinidad is running with debug javascript. See the
org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.DEBUG_JAVASCRIPT parameter in
/WEB-INF/web.xml

The WARNING itself is fine, since the web.xml doesn't have any
ProjectStage setting, but it contains a flag to not obfuscate our
JavaScript (to make it readable)...

However, in DT (DesignTime) mode this can be pretty annoying..
Therefore I was wondering if the standard ProjectStage ([1]) should
contain a DesingTime value?
In a similar fashion like the java.beans.Beans class does have a
isDesignTime() method ([2]).

Not sure if that has been already discussed when specifying the new
ProjectStage contract.

Greetings,
Matthias

But I can't say we're able cope with this problem (yet). So far, I've
experimented Html5, CSS and other Javascript APIs; created some
  components,
  behaviors and etc.

Providing fallbacks automatically is not that easy and for some
features, it is impossible. Of course, we would have allow users to plug
  in
their fallbacks. That would be an important part of this project.

How do others cope with this situation? Is there an established pattern
for this case? If so, then we should add it to our WIKI.There is a
Javascript library called Modernizr [1] which can detect the support for
features. AFAIK, people use that to use Html5 features or fallback to old
  stuff.

Furthermore, Html side of the Html5 (Html + JS APIs + CSS3) mostly
designed in a way that old browsers will just ignore the component, but
  not
it's children elements. So, that is another way of providing fallbacks, as
nested elements, since new browsers will consider the Html5 elements, but
  ignore it's non-applicable children.

sorry Matze, but I need to veto because of:

                artifactIdcheckstyle-rules/artifactId
                version2-SNAPSHOT/version
              /dependency

We need to release the checkstyle rules first to be really clean.
It's sad that the maven-release plugin doesn't seem to check that SNAPSHOT
plugin dependency :( I should trigger a discussion for that over on the maven
 list.

The changed the checkstyle-rules is needed for the newer checkstyle-plugin.
We used a almost 5 years old, and noone did update because of the rules now
look slightly different. If fixed those rules and trunk is using them for a
few months now already. So I think we should be save in rolling a release for
 checkstyle-rules-2 and then re-roll the myfaces-parent-10 release.

The old checkstyle-plugin has lots of known issues but the main problem is
that it doesn't work with maven3...

[POM] MyFaces-Parent

2011-01-14 Thread Matthias Wessendorf
Hi,

I changed a few versions (assembly and release plugin) on our master pom;
before Jakob did change the dependency to Apache-8

Are we OK with releasing the myfaces-pom-10 ?

(yes, I can run it)

Also: the source level is still 1.3. Maybe we should change it to 1.5 (or
 1.6)?

1.5

BTW, I noticed that there is an older, unrelated 2.0.0-beta-1 branch
 from last year:

Does this branch contain any meaningful history?  If not, wondering
whether we should prune it, if only to avoid confusion with our newer
 2.0.0-beta-1 tag.
