last evening I switched on my K3 and got direct "HI SIG" in the display. I
dsconnected all cables but still the same. K3 is not RXing anything anymore.
Strange thing is that the morning I was operating my K3 (serial # 5776) as
normal and switched off after. 4 days before I updated firmw

I have got a problem with my K3/100 s/n 00245.
During OKOM contest, after cca 6 hours heavy duty pileup suddenly the
advice " HI TEMP" jump on and the KPA3 failed down.
And the situation is now still the same. Switch on, TX dots abt 15
second and KPA3 is death !!

Hello to all,
Need some help. After finishing up on 80 cw last night I moved up to 20, hit
the auto tuner for the beam and received HI CUR. And this only ocurred on 20
even with a Dummy Load attached. Msg seemed to go away once I reduced the
wattage down around 60 watts. Hepl!!!
To the list:
I occasionally get the Hi Current warning on my K3. I notice it cuts my
power back about 10% from 100w. My initial assumption is that my SWR is
too high - but the SWR meter is easily less than 2.0 I run the ATU which
confirms SWR about 1.2 or so.
So what am I missing - something bad

I was getting a Hi Cur warning on my K2 tonite. Any helpful hints on what to
look for?? I fired my K2 up tonite on PSK and noticed its only putting about
3 watts out. Double checked it and its all modes, and all bands even tho the
power is set to 5 watts. RF leds only go to 3, usually goes to 5. I

I would check the antennas and feedlines first. Don't overlook those
short pieces of coax interconnecting things in the shack. They can't
fix that kind of problem in Aptos.

I just grabbed a signal generator from work and brought it home...
Turned on the preamp and at about .320mV rms I got a HI SIG warning and
poof the preamp was disabled.
Then turned the signal up further yet. I didn't note the point at which
it turned off exactly but it was just over 2Vrms.

That current is definitely too high (except on 20 meters).
The most common cause for that symptom is the Low Pass Filters. Do
count the number of turns on the toroids in the LPF area - count each
pass of wire through the center of the core as one turn. I believe you

It depends what frequency you are using, Jim, but according to the
transmitter specification on page 9 of the Owner's Manual, the suggested
maximum power on 51-52 MHz is 85W. For 100% duty cycle modes it might
be best to turn the power down a bit.

What is your power supply voltage as reported by the K3 when transmitting? As
power supply voltage drops the K3 increases current in order to put out the
requested power. If the voltage is dropping too low this can result in the
hi-cur message.
Also, the threshold for the hi-cur message
U;ve seen it on occasion with my poorly matched wires. Press the Auto Tune
button and it will go away.

fwiw, my K3 is doing this quite often lately. I see it thru the KAT500
as well as the Palstar-AT-2K. Occasio
Same here, usually with the tuner showing an SWR of 1.2 or so. This never
happened in the past, I wonder if it is related to a software update?
I have to cut the power back, usually under 60 watts for it to go away.

I see the same thing, but only on 10m. I just assumed (possibly erroneously)
the power indication was not accurate and used the indicated 100w. I don't
have an external wattmeter to validate. My antenna is tuned for 20m so tuning
it is not that hard on 10m.

of a Hi Current message is the voltage (as indicated by the K3) level
during transmit.

Check your power supply connections. If you have bolts and nuts on the
power supply output terminals, if the bolts turn (even slightly) when

In my case, the K3’s internal volt meter is indicating 12.1v, well above the
minimum specs. I am pretty sure this only happens on 20m, never on other
bands. I wouldn’t think supply voltage would be band selective. I’m using

If you look at the schematic, you should discover that the LPF area will
indicate DC continuity to ground. The secondary winding of T4 connects the
input of the LPF to ground for DC.
Since the K2 was working before, you have only a single failure point -
keeping that in mind while troubles

I am looking for an antenna to work 6 thru 80 meters in a condo
development. I presently own a k3/10.
Stealth is a very strong consideration. It seems that a SteppIR
Vertical or Hi Q antenna would make sense. Does anyone have experience
with these two antennas for this type of application? Thanks
First question is - why are you using 4.045 MHz - that is outside the
ham band. Use 3.750 MHz instead. Similarly, 10.00 MHz should be in the
range of 10.100 to 10.150 MHz. Also 25.012 is not a good frequency
either, use 24.90 That is not likely to change your results with the
HI-Cur display

the antenna load has an impedance less than 50 ohms - it is not likely
to happen when the antenna feedpoint impedance is higher than 50 ohms.

My K3 has been operating quite well until yesterday. I went to tune-up om 40
mtrs and the autotuner registered 25:1. On all other bands, it tunes properly.
I then put my analyzer on the coax in the shack and it read 2.1:1. Should not

You will probably have to find the correct value by trial and error. I
would recommend setting CAL CUR to 4.0 (which conforms to the 'at least 3.5'
instruction) - or even more and then lower it one step at a time until the
message re-appears - more likely on 10, 12 or 15 meters. The actual set

I'm having trouble with hi-current shutdowns at higher power settings on all
bands below 20 meters (30,40, and 80) . 20 meters and above work fine.

While waiting for parts to fix my KPA100 and KAT100, I was checking out
my K160RX.
The situation is that at 12W out the K2 (KSB2, KNB2, KDSP2, K106RX,
KIO2) draws 2.5 amps. With power set at anything above that, it exceeds
4.5 amps and I get a Hi CUR warning (limit set at 4.5 amps).
Current
While experimenting with 15 meters today, I noticed that when
transmitting a CQ at 10 watts, HI CUR would appear intermittently on the
display. I have never seen this on the lower bands (20 meters and down)
where I do 99% of my operating. Turning the power down to 8 watts on 15
meters makes

Elecraft and I was going to send my K3 back to them and then I saw a few
YouTube videos and I installed a TON of toroids on the K3 and Amp and every
