That's not the case. Only LSM files are provided. The listing of
actually
th RECOVERY option,
release version
identifier file is present in C:\FDOS and it matches that of the Installer.
This is very similar to several
major linux distributions and how they identify what “release” is installed.

What do you mean by "time consuming" ? FDINST REMOVE won't do anything
if the package is not installed - it will

I see the problem - when you move the %DOSDIR% directory away (or backup
it), you loose all meta information about potentially installed packages.
In fact I wonder if there is a point in trying to solve such cases -
after all, if the user has some packages installed, then he doesn't need

OK, I put the latest version of the FDI boot floppy image up on my download
server.

Highly experimental still. So, I recommend only running it a virtual machine or

a test machine.
NOTE: At any point that it is waiting for user input, CTRL-C will bring up a

Oh, one more thing on the FDI floppy image.
If you want to customize what packages are in the “ALL Packages”, just update
the A:\FDSETUP\SETUP\FDALLB.LST text file to include them.
