I believe, you can't. The iBook don't have a DVD Decoding card, so if you add a DVD Drive, it will NOT play the movies (for DVD Playback without DVD Decoders, you need a G3 500mhz or faster). I've checked that issue, because I have a Sony Monitor. It seems that only the Pismo can use an external monitor with the LCD OFF. When the PowerBook startup, close the lid and the notebook will use the external monitor, but the Lombard goes to sleep, so the only choice is reduce dimming on the LCD

I think that Apple don't care too much about their customers. I have a Lombard PowerBook and I can't play DVDs on OS X because DVD Player app don't support "hardware decoders".
