After much head bashing I put in a via pci sata card and that was it.
Worth the 1.5k cost

as /dev/sda (or b) on connection. Where was the need to compile
kernel?

a VIA SATA PCI card on to MoBo and connected the SATA drives. Worked
perfectly.
