Does it happen with one or all discs you put in there? If the first, try
erasing and re-recording the disc and see if you still have the problem. If
the latter, definitely get the thing repaired.

I only use my PS2 for recording audio from CD to MD, and it works really
really well! The CD player for the PS2 is pretty sparse, but it gets the
job done with stuff like program and shuffle play, etc. And yes, it passes
trackmarks correctly too. :)

Read the manual, man. You'd be lucky to get 2 h of battery life while
recording. If you're going to record for long periods, use the plug or the
backup battery pack that comes with it to augment the gumstick with a AA. I

As for scripting the R900 to turn on at a certain point, your guess is as
good as mine. But synchro rec ONLY works with digital sources, not analog

Well really you don't need any special equipment to record MP3s to MD.
Personally I use the analog output of my soundcard, but pretty much only
because I don't have a USB port to plug the digital converter into.
