It is *only* a library problem or what?

To fine tune the kernel from i586 to athlon. is it just take the source of
the currente kernel (mdk) and select "athlon" (menuconfig) and proceed with
the regular "make's" ?
For testing only, this is the only modification I would like for the moment!
Using mdk8.1(Intel) and 8.2(athlon)
