Not a virus, when a linux program crashes for some reason it leaves the
core file, which in simple terms is a dump of all memory surrounding the
program. This is usefull in debugging.
When I am developing linux software I have those all over my system. Don't
worry about it and just delete it.

Dont worry it is not a virus!!
it is a dump file from a program that abnormaly aborted during its
execution (aka segv or segmetaion fault) you can delete them without any
harm to the system

i have been trying to compile a few programs, and i
always get by the ./configure part just fine. i've
figured out enough to get the right libraries and whatnot.
i've been trying to compile two programs in particular that

The Java question wasn't my problem but I'm saving Steve Allen's description of
how to use "tar" for any future uses of this utility. It's the clearest

You can search for the RPMs or do the following with your tar.gz files:
Enter the command ---" gzip -d (tarfilename).tar.gz "
This expands the compressed file and replaces it with a tar archive with a tar
extension. After you expand the compressed file, you need to expand it into a
directory tree.
I think RPM should only work with .rpm packages.
if they're tar.gz, it'd be zipped a certain way, and you'd have to untar and
gunzip it manually, compile it, etc, etc.
Try to find the *.rpm files for for your applications.

I downloaded the files for Java Development Kit and ICQ for Java.
The two files came down as tar.gz files. When I use RPM to install the JDK and
ICQ for Java, when I select the files, RPM shuts down.
Has anyone installed this series of applications?, if so, can you lend a hand

Recently I have just installed Linux Mandrake 6.1 onto my system. Everything
works fine till I reboot the system and start Linux.
It went till a certain part of the bootup saying something like "fs for vfat
not supported by kernel".
Then when I run the KDE, it gives me all the errors saying tha
Hello.
My system recently was powered off while running X. (Uh oh)
After reboot and (auto)running fsck I seem to be missing some of the kde files (system

the rpm for KDE (Please correct me if I'm wrong). I can

modemthen, make sure you have linux seeing it on the right port.
try using all the com ports under linux...ie ttyS0,ttyS1, etc.
also try /dev/modem at the top...
what modem is it?

I installed Mandrake 6.0 yesterday but have been unable to get my modem to
respond. And no, its not a win modem.
I tried many different jumper settings for the IRQ & com port but when I try
to use KPPP all I got were:
"Sorry, the modem is not responding" or "The modem is busy" messages.

No, I haven't downloaded anything for RH 6.0. My problem went away when I
unstalled 1.2.0 and installed 1.2.1.

By any chance, are you trying to use a Mandrake 6.0 RPM on top of Mandrake
5.3 or something similar?
