What flavor of server 08 would you choose for these servers? Core or full install. Exchange 07 Domain controller with DHCP. File server for user home directories. In your opinion does the reduced attack surface and fewer patches outweigh the convenience of having the gui tools and such

Don't mean to hijack but I did have an issue with my BES server...after installing the updates, three BES services hang at boot (giving me the Applying Computer Settings window forever).I'm still trying to figure out what is causing this but things were fine until I updated the box.

All core does is give you a DOS prompt. Exchange doesn't work on it. The DC with DHCP will work, but again, you have to do all commands from the command line. File server would work too, I guess. Unless you're really good at the command line, I'd just recommend the full install. Joe Heaton

For what Glen is asking, I would go with Full for Exchange and the file server and Core for the DC and Hyper-V machines. Managing any DC from another workstation is preferred anyways so that no one is logging on to the DC locally. Loading Windows Core just makes it that much less likely you'll

...all my life! We are just getting to use this feature and it's DA BOMB! Being able to add users to local groups w/out affecting the existing memberships is awesome! We are narrowing down how many Domain Admins we have and this feature is *hugely* helpful in delegating to non domain admins.
