Brian,
I like both versions.
Regarding your question about the B&W one: I see B&W alright on my screen,
but I would have boosted the exposure just a bit.
I am not sure which version is better. At first, I saw only the B&W, and
couldn't figure out where the color version was. And I thought B
Larry,
The first photo is very good. The second one can benefit from some
trimming, but I am not sure if even that would help with that bright
thing in the left bottom corner. I'd try to spot-treat it to tune down the
brightness of that object.
Sorry, but I find that logic (quoted below) faul
Larry,
I perfectly understand your dilemma.
But...

IMHO, 31/1.8 is just too good of a lens to let it go.
It is almost as good as 77/1.8.
The rendering of both of these is so grea

That's a great photo!
My first thought when I saw the message subject was it was not literal.

Otherwise the tested person can be punished even

I like the juxtaposition, but I am biased on several levels.
I am curious if this photo works for others.

Dave,
I understand your fear... ;-)
This path your are using defeats the purpose of shooting RAW. in that
case, as Cotty has suggested, - just shoot JPEGs.
If you want to benefit from the RAW while using LR, you might consider
using a DNG converter from Adobe.
So, your work flow would be:
