Thanks, Doug.
Alas, that box is already un-selected, but the face detection marches on…

You can disable face indexing in Catalog Settings. Do the following:
(Mac) Select Lightroom Classic > Catalog Settings.
(Windows) Select Edit > Catalog Settings.
On the Metadata tab, deselect Automatically Detect All Faces In All Photos.
Close the Catalog Settings dialog box
On 7/5/21 11:55 AM,
crash. Breaking
out of that loop was annoyingly difficult.

For my suggestion I looked at LR Help for Face Detection, found that it can be
turned on with cmd-F (“Find Similar Faces”) under the Photo menu. I thought it
might work as a toggle.
Maybe try variations, like option-cmd-F
Good luck!

Didn’t work. Just kept on trying to index the faces in all 50,000+ images on my
drive.

I don’t know what I accidentally hit to turn it on, and I can’t get out of it!
There is a “filmstrip” full of faces filling my screen, and above it the
headings People, Named People, and Unnamed People.’
When I try to open anything else, it starts looking for people in the folder I
open.

I lost my original Q to a swollen battery. Using super glue did not
occur to me, maybe that would have worked. I did a lot of googling on
ways to solve this problem and did not find any useful answers. Avoid
doing anything intrusive to the battery - like drilling a hole in it and

battery is EN-EL5.

What's the battery number. I have a dead Coolpix, but I think the
battery is OK. If it's the same thing I'll send it to you before I get
rid of the camera.

Just a SWAG, but you could take it to a local camera store and they'd get the
battery out for you & sell you a new battery at the same time.
Although it looks like you can get two EN-EL5 batteries plus a charger from
Amazon for the same price as just a battery from B&H.

Squeeze some glue out on a piece
That only works with a round battery. The nikon probably has a flat
battery. Using superglue is difficult because it's a liquid and one
drop too much and everything (camera and battery) is glued together.
