You said this started a couple weeks after you did a newmodel.  I think I smell a softlimit problem.  Are you running x64 OS?  You might need to bump the SMTP softlimit back up.  You should also check the rest of them (pop3, submit, etc)  I know that's something I have always had to do after runn
