I had the same problem and traced it down to the following file:
/etc/sysconfig/desktop
The following is what is contained in the file.
DESKTOP=KDE
DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE
I did a little tracing of the startup process and found that to start X the
folowing script is run:
/etc/X11/prefdm
sassin and ClamAV into the mix
to provide a complete email solution.

I've found a solution on my own althought I don't know why this is. It has to do with
how the HPUX machines mount the Linux NFS server volume.
o What did not work:
/etc/fstab entry: "hbwpe:/home /prod_hbwpe nfs rw,suid,vers=2 0 0"

I recently reinstalled RedHat 9 from scratch. Thinking it would be good to
have a boot-floppy, I said "yes" when prompted to make a boot floppy. Now, I
realize, that was really asking if I wanted to make a boot floppy INSTEAD of
installing GRUB on the /dev/hda. How do I get it to install on /dev
card and added it to /etc/modules.conf,
however, my problem is that it doesn't appear to find it at boot time, and
load the module for it, despite it being in /etc/modules.conf.
Can someone please tell me EXACTLY what to change to make the system boot up
with the AIC7xxx driver?
ld be using one since I boot off IDE, but I guess I do... I'm about to go
see how to build a new INITRD. :-)

I had exactly these symptoms. This is kernel panic. I'm imagining
you're running RH9, with the version of cdrecord that came with it (I
don't remember). Upgrade to cdrecord-2.0-11.1, on rpmfind
pen for all users? If it's just for one, move the gnome
dot files in the affected user's home directory and restart.

I came across an old copy of 'kfstab' but this failed to work (under
redhat linux 9 with kde 3.1).
