Just to pick a nit, it's spelled "hexadecimal", not "hexidecimal".
Some implementations are more forgiving and some aren't. Personally, I
like the sort that core dump at the slightest such error cause they help
to debug the program for me!
I think its most likely a bug in your program. You don't very often find
a bug of this nature in a system library
or
DOS. If you must get an internal modem make sure you can DISABLE by
hardware settings (switches or jumpers) the Plug 'n Pray nonsense.
Even better is an external modem. As far as I know they've not yet (!)
produced a LoseModem that's not internal, so you should be safe.
