If there is a lecture hall-ful of people exiting, it'll be tough to get the
room to seal with a couple of 2m openings. And I'll echo that DI Preaction
backup makes sense, use concealed heads to minimize physical damage
potential.

Compare cost of the investment in Sony goodies (and the interruption expense
during replacement, the univ equal to BI) with cost of the planned FP
improvements. If this is a really esoteric ($$$$$) setup, maybe it makes
sense. Maybe the writer has an inflated opinion of how critical their stuff
is.

We just budgeted a retrofit of a small industrial plant, wet in production,
but in the office they wanted clean agent because they have "computers".
Turns out its plain jane dell desktops, no more mission critical than what
I'm typing on now. We gave em clean agent and wet options, and pointed out
that there are literally millions, if not billions of similar pc's protected
by sprinklers in the world and lots of us sleep very well at night.

Subject: RE: Fire Sprinker System Changes in Vis Lab

Jaber,

What kind of advisement are you looking for? The plan for protecting this
space with NOVEC 1230 and using VESDA early warning detection sounds like
the way to go. Are you questioning removing the sprinkler system? You will
most likely need AHJ approval to install only the clean agent system in lieu
of sprinklers (although this isn't IBC world is it?). You might want to
advise the owner to consider having a sprinkler system 'back up'. Sounds
like a pre-action system would be warranted with the level of fear it sounds
like they have. You can also try to dispel some of the unfounded fears they
probably have regarding accidental discharges, but don't expect them to be
ok with a wet system remaining in this space.
There are a number of other considerations to be made...such as sealing of
the room. Does it have a drop ceiling?
We can discuss more once I know what you are after.

Subject: Fire Sprinker System Changes in Vis Lab

Your insights/advised are highly appreciated pertaining to a new
visualization lab in new university protected by automatic sprinkler system
and the vendor of the visualization equipment is worried about sprinkler
leakage. Have a look at his draft letter highlighted bellow and advise us
accordingly. Thanks in advance.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------

Changes to sprinkler system in Vislab Area of building one.

The current sprinkler arrangement in the vislab section of building
puts our visualization equipment at significant risk. The water based
system if it goes off could easily ruin millions of dollars of
equipment in a very short period of time. Including all Sony
projectors that drive the CAVE and MPR areas.

For this reason it is imperative that we make changes in these spaces
to the current fire system. Visualization laboratory a plan for
corrective action has been prepared and is recommended as
the best course of action.

First the building fire detection system should be extended to the Vis
lab Data Center, Recording Room, DS1, DS2/3, CAVE and MPR Projection
spaces. This will ensure timely notification of any emergency to the
response team.

Second the current sprinkler system in the above areas should be
closed and drained of water to ensure no accidents can cause loss of
equipment through water damage. Additional Fire Extinguishers should
be placed in these areas as well.

Third a permanent solution utilizing VESDA detection system and NOVEC
fire suppression system should be installed in all of these areas. The
installation should be carried out
in such a way to minimize laboratory downtime to a maximum of
a single week. We believe this can be done by the careful removal of
the most delicate equipment from the lab space, covering the remainder
in protective plastic and having NOVEC piping installed and configured
after the delicate equipment has been removed.

A similar adjustment must be made to the two lecture hall projection
rooms containing Sony 4K projectors.

We believe that these changes would be in the best interest of a long term
protection of its investment in its visualization equipment.
