Scenario, mini storage with multiple 10' x 10', 10' x 8' and so on cubicles
with partitions stopping at 8'-0 with a 6" x 6" open grate/wire 1/8"
diameter fence ceiling at 8'-0. Existing calculated ordinary hazard group
II, .20 gpm over 1500 sq. ft. with upright fire sprinklers at 10' x 12'
spacing. Existing upright fire sprinkler deflectors are at 13'-6, placing
them 5'-6 above the 6" x 6" open grate/wire ceiling. NFPA 13 2007 8.6.5.2.2
addresses floor mount vertical obstructions for light hazard only. NFPA 13
2007 8.14.12 addresses open-grid ceilings. Since the sprinkler deflector is
greater than 36" above the open grated/wire ceiling, the existing system is
in compliance 8.14.12. However, since NFPA 13 dose not address the vertical
obstructions for ordinary hazard in this situation, the vertical partitions
would be an obstruction. Therefore, the existing upright fire sprinkler
spacing would need to be modify to either place the sprinkler directly over
the partition or over each cubical. In other words, you could not ignore
the vertical partition in this situation. Am I looking at the correct?
