If you still have the old gear in storage you might want to dust it off and give it a try.
I don't want to mislead you by saying it's your router, however. I don't know. I have a Speedstream modem and ASUS router. I replaced my D-Link router with the ASUS because the ASUS (running Tomato firmware) gives me more control.
