[IMail Forum] Upgrading 8.22 to 2006.23
I was hoping for someone advice/feedback/pointers on upgrading Imail 8.22 to 2006.23 We are currently running Imail 8.22 on a Windows 2003 SP2 server with a 3.2GHz processor and 4GB of mem. Can anyone provide some aritcles on upgrade best practices? Also, any opinions on whether its best to upgrade or do a clean install and then migrate the domains? Also, if there are any lessons learned people would like to share I would very much appreciate it. Thanks, Matt Chabot Tier1net

[IMail Forum] upgrading 2006.21 RC1 to release version
Hi, Been on hold with the support desk for 34 min now, calling from The Netherlands :-( Maybe someone overhere knows the answer. ;-) About a month ago I installed IMAil 2006.21 RC1 on my production server as the 2006.2 version was not stable and I had some vacation coming up. It's been quite solid, so I've had a quiet vacation. But now I want to install th real version, the 2006.21 release version. When I run the setup I do not get the option to Upgrade as it sees itself installed. So what next? I can first Uninstall, and then install. Or I could do a repair. Would a repair be enough, would it overwrite every RC1 file with the release version file? [IMail Forum] upgrading to 2006.2
I'm a little nervous about upgrading IMail from 2006.1 to 2006.2 and want to make sure I do it correctly. I downloaded the upgrade and have read through the release notes and don't see any specific instructions for installing the upgrade. For example, do I need to shut down the IMail services currently running before running the install? Do I need to shut down the IIS services? If not, what happens if users try to access their email while I'm upgrading IMail? If any of you have done this upgrade and have suggestions, I would love to hear them. [IMail Forum] Upgrading from 8.22 to 2006.2
Hi I am running 8.22 and have a license and install for 2006.1 but never ran the install due to concerns about the various issues discussed here. I would now like to run the upgrade to 2006.2 but have two questions.. - Can I go straight to 2006.2 and enter my license key for 2006.1 or do I need to install 2006.1 first - The 2006.1 version I have is Imail Server Secure Edition 2006 but on the links to the upgrades (http://www.ipswitch.com/forums/shwmessage.aspx?ForumID=31MessageID=27350) it links to Imail-Plus-2006.2 for the Imail Secure version. RE: [IMail Forum] Upgrading from 8.22 to 2006.2
In your case you can go strait to .2 if you like, as the Imail keys have not changed since the initial 2006 release. However, .1 contains a new version of the antivirus scan engine and the old scan engine has known security issues. Upgrade to .1 then to .2 will likely be your easiest path to upgrade the antivirus. In order to keep receiving virus definitions, you will need to ensure that you have a current Symantec license key for the antivirus scan engine. You can check the licensing status of the scan engine, go to the web administration for the scan engine(port 8004 on you primary ip most likely). You will find the Symantec licensing info there. The decision was made to start selling antivirus separately. As a result, what was IMail secure is now IMail plus. In the future you will need to purchase the antivirus separately. [IMail Forum] Upgrading - any catches?
HelloI'm back. So I am back at the company I left and they are still running Imail Server. It looks like version 9.03 when I look at the service sin the web page. I would like to upgrade to the latest and greatest to see if there are any improvements. So this entails two questions: 1. Will I see some improvements - namely in speed? 2. Are there any catches I need to look for when upgrading? - Travis Rabe
RE: [IMail Forum] Upgrading - any catches?
Travis, Since you are already at the 9.0x level and current version is 9.10, things should be pretty painless. As for improvements, yes, but I don't think real big increases there, mostly bug/feature fixes. Actually, the version is technically, 2006.1, so a little KB search yields the release notes... http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-20060905-JH13.htm Might want to look at the 2006.04 ones, too, since you will be skipping that version... [IMail Forum] Upgrading version problem
Hi, I have been called in to do an emergency upgrade on an iMail 2006 server that I have seen only once before. It seems to be running 9.01 (according to the services menu in the administrator console) which I am assuming is iMail 2006.01. Now I have downloaded the upgrades IMail 2006.03, and .04 and .1 just in case. When I go to run any of these updates the first message I get is Setup has determined that a later version is already installed. This setup installs an earlier version. So I looked at the files and a lot of them are dated Dec 19, 2005 which makes me believe that I am right that they are running 9.01 / 2006.01 Is there another place to confirm from within IMail Administrator or should I just ignore the upgrade message and proceed? Re: [IMail Forum] Upgrading version problem
There's probably an easier way (like what you tried), but right click on the smtp32.exe file, go to properties, choose the version tab, and then choose "Product Version" from the values there. It should be "9, 1, 0, dev_test" if it is 2006.1. Note that Ipswitch has a funny naming convention where 2006.01 is earlier than 2006.1. It would seem that they should maybe add a dot. If it is really 2006.1, then maybe they have an old copy of the Webmail interface (if it is hard coded in there). RE: [IMail Forum] Upgrading version problem
Hi Matt, The version of SMTPD is 9, 0, 1, 15 and it is dated Dec 19, 2005 which is consistent with 2006.01 I am on site now and have found a partial directory of C:\Program Files\Ipswitch\IMail which seems some leftover files from ICS. There is only one EXE file and it is called trial_rt.exe. The SMTPD and QueueMgr program run from C:\Program Files\IMail Also something is locking the ICS directory (C:\Program Files\Ipswitch\IMail) since I was unable to rename the \IMAIL portion. This is not going to be a fun night. Goran, if you can look through the services and see if anything from Ipswitch or Imail is there. If that does not help, restart in safe mode and rename the directory and restart and check the event logs for what did not start. Also, review the msconfig file. I'll be around after 10 PM mine 1 AM yours if you need me. I hope you are done by then. John T eServices For You Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood. RE: [IMail Forum] Upgrading version problem
Let me share with you what happened. The short answer is that I have upgraded to 2006.1 and everything seems to be working. There were two items giving me grief. 1 There seemed to be a previous installation of ICS 2 The upgrade files were going to downgrade my installation This server was once an iMail 8.2x server. At that time it had everything installed to C:\Program Files\IMail. Then last December it was upgraded in place to IMail 2006 and patch .01 was applied. What this ended up doing is upgrading the core programs in the above directory but all the new web stuff went into C:\Program Files\Ipswitch\IMail and that is where the ICS files were. Since I was coming into this server blind this caused me concern especially when coupled with the #2 problem above. I thought that I have a mixed install of ICS and IMail. Turns out I did not and it is like this because it was an upgraded 8.2x The second problem drove me nuts. I finally figured it out and I believe I have discovered an install bug. I knew I had version 9.01 installed. The version in IMail Services said so and so did the version number on the properties of SMTPD32.exe and the dates were Dec 19, 2005. So why did the upgrade patch tell me that it was going to install an older version of IMail? After some digging I decided that the Install message was simply incorrect since I got the same error message when I tried to run the .03 or .04 or .1 patch. Just to be safe I zipped the two imail directories and exported the IMail registry. I ran the 2006.1 patch, ignored the warning, everything worked. Smooth. Well until I looked at the IMail services. I was now at 9.0 Bad news. I tried to run the .04 patch and this time I got to the Repair or Remove screen. To make the long and frustrating story short the problem was where I had the original and patch files. C:\Software\iMailServer2006\IMail.exe this is the original 2006 installation file C:\Software\iMailServer2006\iMail 2006.01\imail200601.exe 2006.01 patch file C:\Software\iMailServer2006\iMail 2006.04\imail200604a.exe 2006.04a patch file C:\Software\iMailServer2006\iMail 2006.1\imail.exe 2006.1 patch file The problem was the space between iMail and 2006 AND the fact that there is a file called imail.exe in the directory above the patches If I changed the directory to C:\Software\iMailServer2006\iMail2006.1\imail.exe (no space) then the patch would work fine If I moved C:\Software\iMailServer2006\IMail.exe to C:\Software\iMailServer2006\IMail 2006\IMail.exe and then ran the patch from C:\Software\iMailServer2006\iMail 2006.1\imail.exe then I did not have the problem. Something about installshield breaks with the combination of the space in the patch directory which isolates the word imail and the fact that there is an imail.exe in the directory above (original file) so it invokes the partial directory name.exe from the above directory. Hopefully I have explained myself well and people will not create the weird combination that I did and suffer the same problems. What a pain. I am thinking about doing an upgrade on one of our installs, which is still on 8.1x. I assume upgrading will not be a problem from this old version (technically)? Also, what consitutes a user in the new version? I assume mailing lists, list users, alises, etc do NOT count as a user? Hi David, The best way to do this is to be running the same version on both machines and then do the migration. Whether that be 9.0 on the old to 9.0 on the new or 8.21 to 8.21. [IMail Forum] upgrading to 8.2 then 9.0 from 8.05 ... Dictionary Attacks??
I am thinking about renewing my service contract so I can upgrade from 8.05 to 8.2 and eventual 9.0 when it is released. The only reason I want to upgrade since 8.05 is working for us just fine, is the ability to handle dictionary attacks. When I contact sales, they told me this was added in, but I can't find anyplace in the online docs that say this. Does 8.2 or 9.0 have the following: (1) Handles dictionary attacks ... ie block an IP if email fails xx number of times within yy seconds ??? (2) Alternate port besides primary port 25? Thanks. RE: [IMail Forum] upgrading to 8.2 then 9.0 from 8.05 ... Dictionary Attacks??
Yes, dictionary attacks are blocked by x number of unknown users in a session the session is closed. Yes, support for an additional port (mainly port 587) and the ability to force authentication on the port has been added and works great. RE: [IMail Forum] upgrading to 8.2 then 9.0 from 8.05 ... Dictionary Attacks??
Hi David, Good to hear that IMail 8.05 is working fine. Some answers below augmenting, John T's quick and spot-on responses! (1) Handles dictionary attacks ... ie block an IP if email fails xx number of times within yy seconds ??? ==IPSWITCH A Dictionary Attack feature is coming in the IMail 2006 Web Admin in approximately one month. You can set the # of invalid recipients/errors in a single session which, when triggered, puts the IP address on a blocked list for y time (settable by Web Admin). In IMail 8.2, a similar feature works as follows via a registration manipulation (hack;-). . SMTPD can now block connections after max invalid recipients reached. . SMTPD will close a connection after the maximum number of invalid recipients have been reached. This is not turned on by default. To enable this behavior create or edit the following registry key: Key: MaxInvalidRCPTsPerSession Type: DWORD Default: 0 Location: HEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPD32\Parameters (2) Alternate port besides primary port 25? ==IPSWITCH In IMail 2006, setting the alternate port will be included in the Web Administration interface. In IMail 8.2, this is available and documented in the release notes here, as a reg setting. http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-20050427-DM01.htm . Support for additional listen port in SMTPD The following keys will be added by the server and can be modified as desired by the administrator. ExtraPort: DWORD, default 587 EnableExtraPort: DWORD, default 0 (both keys are in CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPD32\Parameters) . Added registry setting to force auth on second port in SMTPD: under ../services/SMTPD32/Parameters Value Name: ForceAuthOnExtraPort Value Type: DWORD Default Value: 1 Bye for now, kg -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of David Dodell Sent: Monday, October 31, 2005 6:57 PM To: Imail Mailing List Subject: [IMail Forum] upgrading to 8.2 then 9.0 from 8.05 ... Re: [IMail Forum] upgrading the server
Hi Bill, This is not really complicated. I usually setup the new server running the IMail Setup, or in our case, we're using our software distribution. The only thing you should watch: Choose the same application folder for IMail, eg. C:\IMail, C:\Program Files\IMail as the old one and do not add any domains on the new server. After that export from the registry HKLM\Software\ipswitch\IMail\Domains. Stop all IMail related services on the new baby and import the registry. Don't forget to copy all the data from the hosts and the spool directory into the same location on the new server. If you want to keep all settings from the old server, you can export the registry from one level above: HKLM\Software\ipswitch\IMail. If you're deciding to change some directories, you can change it directly in registry. At the end, start the IMail services. Am Donnerstag, 13. RE: [IMail Forum] upgrading the server
When we upgraded servers in June, we took this approach: 1. config new server with OS, IMAIL and 3rd party filtering etc. 2. backed up registry with domains; restored this to new server 3. stopped services on old server 4. copied over user folders from old server to new 5. swapped IP's of old and new server (goal was not to have to update DNS with new ip's, etc) 6. start services on new server Outside of the server build, this took less than 30 minutes of switch down time. Hi Bill, This is a good idea. You can change the Spool directory any time. Change the key HKLM\OFTWARE\Ipswitch\IMail\Global\SpoolDir to your needs. Stop the services before ;-) With a bit hacking in the registry, it's quite possible to keep the application directory clean, meaning no data in it. You cange everything in the directory. Title: Message When we upgraded from 8.15 to 8.2 ( this was before the HF was released ) we ran into attachments being randomly corrupted. It became such a persistent problem that we could not wait for the HF and had to revert to 8.15 immediately after contacting IPSwitch and discovering they had a "known problem" with attachments. 8.15 has been stable for us, but we want the abilities of 8.2 and have been cautiously waiting in the wings to see if any other issues cropped up. Didn't have time to investigate with the phone ringing off the wall. -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of ajaySent: Friday, May 27, 2005 1:31 PMTo: IMail_Forum@list.ipswitch.comSubject: [IMail Forum] upgrading Imail server Hi, I run Imail server 8.0 and would like to upgrade it to 8.2. RE: [IMail Forum] upgrading system box
Since this is our first in-house email server I decided to try and simplify my life by using the AV solution from Ipswitch, also we run Symantec Enterprise on the rest of our network and have been pleased with it. Server is more pricy than WS, but since there are no Microsoft protocols running on the server (as I read the EULA) you don't need to licence all of those pesky connection CAL's. Which makes the price more reasonable. (The CAL issue is why we have Slackware/SAMBA file servers internally.) When we have a better comfort level with the server operation we will probably look at other options. I'm always open to better ideas .rick.. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kevin Bilbee Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 12:45 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [IMail Forum] upgrading system box The statement I was replying to was that Windows workstation was required for the AV product and that was my bad I reversed workstation and server when I read it. RE: If you are speaking of using a desktop operating system for your IMail box, I HIGHLY recommend against it. If you are using a desktop OS now, that is probably why your performance might be degrading. I found the opposite to be true - I used to run IMail on Win2K Server and switched to Win2K Pro. I think it runs better on Pro - certainly fewer resources are being used by the OS - leaving those resources free to be used by IMail. RE: [IMail Forum] upgrading system box
I have Imail installed on a Dell server with Win2000SRV for Primary. Same hardware but WinXP Pro (not my idea) for the backup server. The main server, on the same hardware, is almost twice as fast at Declude/Fprot/Imail. Neither box runs anything else continually (the backup has a program that the boss uses that won't work on a server OS, but he only uses it once a month for about an hour). I don't have hard numbers to support it, but the difference is very obvious. (We have campus licenses for both, so cost and availability are not problems.) Unless they've changed something, XP is a workstation OS, and as such is limited to 10 client connection at a time. I don't know it that only applies to Windows network connections, or incoming connections for any service. If the debate is Windows Server 2003 vs. Windows server 2000, I'm not sure there's a big different either way, though I'd probably install on WinServer 2003 if given the choice. -- He made us believe a man could fly Christopher Reeve, 1952-2004 - Bud Durland, CNE Mold-Rite Plastics Network Administrator http://www.mrpcap.com - --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus / Sophos AV] To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/ To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/ To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/
Re: [IMail Forum] upgrading system box
Hey John, If you are speaking of using a desktop operating system for your IMail box, I HIGHLY recommend against it. If you are using a desktop OS now, that is probably why your performance might be degrading. You could actually take your existing box, upgrade the RAM (and hard drive if needed), upgrade the OS to a server OS (2000 or 2003) and see a significant improvement in performance. The difference between workstation and server OS makes a BIG difference. Hi, Prasad brings it to the point. Use Windows 2003 Server, at least double the memory and your IMail server will be happy for the rest of its live. Am Mittwoch, 20. On the first time you start IMail after that upgrade it will take quite a while and consume considerable CPU time converting LDAP - whether you use it or not. I'm going to...put it on a W2K3 box. Gotcha's I need to be aware of? We have been instructed to upgrade the NT4 box to the latest and then make the move to the new box against a fresh install. This is a good method which keeps the new server feelin' fresh. However, the most important consideration with IMail and W2K3 is with W2K3 DNS; if you are using W2K3 DNS (on localhost or elsewhere), you must be sure to turn of EDNS (Google), or mail to many domains will fail. --Sandy Sanford Whiteman, Chief Technologist Broadleaf Systems, a division of Cypress Integrated Systems, Inc. e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] SpamAssassin plugs into Declude! http://www.mailmage.com/products/software/freeutils/SPAMC32/download/release/ Defuse Dictionary Attacks: Turn Exchange Addresses into IMail Aliases! http://www.mailmage.com/products/software/freeutils/exchange2aliases/download/release/ To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/

[IMail Forum] Upgrading to 8.11
I plan to install 8.1 and the patches through 8.11 in the next few days. I have looked through Imail KB and archives for issues to watch for. Was wondering if there was any other advice from the forum. Have one domain, use POP3 and web mail. Don't use IMAP, LDAP, or web calendar. - Know that new templates need to be installed. - Isn't there an issue of max mail default being changed to 10MB or was that only Killer Webmail? - Will need to review rules for \, [, etc. for negative effects. Any thing else to watch for would be appreciated. RE: [IMail Forum] Upgrading to 8.11
One issue mentioned, the 10MB limit, is a default in the web-mail templates which you need to set within the template config files... Otherwise with one domain and no imap usage you should be probably ok. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Travis Rabe Sent: Wednesday, May 19, 2004 2:47 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [IMail Forum] Upgrading to 8.11 You should be fine. Re: [IMail Forum] Upgrading to 8.11
Hi, There is one problem and I hope someone on the list can either find a workaround or send me the DLL that is required for the 8.11installer. startVent Make sure you have IE 5.5 + installed. The new installer they are using requires it. This is a real problem for me as I am running nt4 with sp4. I don't what to install sp6a and then install IE6. I have no need, the server is running fine. What a poor decision at ipswitch to use an installer that requires some DLL's that IE 5.5 installs, and on a DOT release. I don't want IE on this machine and it is just crazy for ipswitch to require it for 8.11. I have installed all the versions from the first beta to 8.05 with no problems at all. Now they through this at us. Jees, all I wanted to do was upgrade from 8.05 to 8.11. It's only a DOT release, not a full release. Ipswitch, pleae give us a workaround for this. I will upgrade my system when you come out with ver 9, but for a DOT release I would expect the installer to not require IE be installed.. How silly... endVent Best Regards, Joe Hansen John Carter wrote: I plan to install 8.1 and the patches through 8.11 in the next few days. AW: [IMail Forum] Upgrading to 8.11
While I agree, that the IE dependancy is a bad step, I seriously can't understand why you don't have the newest service pack *and* rollup package *and* hotfixes running on a server that is accessible from the Internet (due to the nature of a mail server). With all the security holes, worms and viruses around I would call this grossly negligent from an admin running such a server (even when a corporate firewall blocks all ports except 25, etc., since you always should *close* holes, not *hide* them). -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Im Auftrag von Joe on the Road Gesendet: Donnerstag, 20. [IMail Forum] Upgrading 6.0.4 to 8.0.5
Hello... I'm getting ready to upgrade from 6.0.4 to 8.0.5. Are there any issues I need to be aware of? It's a WinNT4sp6a machine with 4 small domains ( less than 250 users ) over two partitions. One nic. Fairly vanilla setup. Any suggestions? Thx, D. PS: I waited so long because 604 was such a stable platform for us, we decided not to fix what's not broken, but I think it's finally time. Re: [IMail Forum] Upgrading to 8.03 Saturday
Hi, 1. backup the imail folder to tape (oldserver) 2. backup the entire registry (oldserver) 3. export the imail branch to file (oldserver) 4. install imail 7.05 on (new server) 5. upgrade imail 7.05 on (new server) to 7.10 Which version are you rinning on the old server. The new server should have the exact same version before importing the IMail registry branch from the old server. Your steps suggest you are running 7.10 on the old server but only have a 7.05 install and a 7.10 upgrade, right? 6. copy imail registry file to (new server) desktop 7. copy imail folder to (new server) 8. shutdown (old server) Until now your old server has been receiving mail and updates from users which might be written to the registry. I would stop all IMail services before step 6. With IMail folder you mean both the program folder as well as the mailboxes right? 9. configure (new server) with same (oldserver) IP address (don't wanna muck with dns zone changes) 10. bring up (new server) 11. stop all imail services on (new server) 12. import imail branch file to (new server) registry 13. start imail services (at this point should be up and running as before only on new box) Do a reboot at this point to make the server is indeed correctly up and running. If not you might introduce more and bigger problems after an upgrade which could be easily fixed at this point. 14. upgrade imail 7.10 on (new server) to 8.0 15. install 8.03 upgrade (new server) 16. apply 8.03 hotfix (new server) 17. stop all spam filtering (new server) 18. change root to point to my spam folder (new server) 19. start configuring spam options. (new server) 20. Did I miss anything??? See my suggestions.
