i.e. no-one is currently having serious performance problems.

Well, some-one definately said it :)
Also, anyone who has done a recent RH7.2 install will probably recall being 
offered ext3. So there will be plenty of testing, and probably easier upgrade 
for everyone based on Redhat.

Nothing that I remember, although I was a bit hazy at this point. Mid-summer 
in Brisbane with no airconditioning (or even fans) in the accomodation wasn't 
helping me sleep :(
The focus for ext3 definately seemed to be on 2.4->2.5. Directory 
notifications, ACLs, and some other stuff that will probably be easier to 
remember when I get the CD of the proceedings.
AFAICT, development on ext3 for 2.2 is basically dead, which is a real pity. 
It would be nice to get ext3 going before switching to 2.4, but using kernel 
patches that are fairly unique doesn't leave me feeling too confident about 
stability.
