Hes the Driffield schoolboy, whos been tipped to be the next Paul Daniels after winning Best Stage Act in the Northern Magic Circle awards. Ill be meeting him tonight. Whitby If, like me, you enjoy Whitby for a day out or even a holiday, then Im sure youll be pleased to hear this one. I never tire of Whitby. Its got that mixture of modern and old world charm and of course just up the road, theres Robin Hoods Bay as well. Well, wonderful Whitby has just had a top accolade. With its picture postcard harbour and two miles of beach, Whitby has won the title of Britains best seaside resort. The historic port, famous for inspiring Bram Stokers Dracula, and the place where Captain Cook set sail, has everything you could possibly want, according to the judges of Holiday Which! Beyond the chip shops, candy floss and games arcades on the quay side, children can enjoy donkey rides and ride on the glorious sweep of Whitby sands. Its beaten everywhere else, including Wells-next-to-the-Sea, Sidmouth in Devon (thats a beautiful place), Swanage in Dorset and also the lovely St Ives in Cornwall as well. Whitby is the top destination. The best seaside de! stination in the whole of the UK. Thats very good news. Fish If youve got fish at home and if you keep fish in a tank, well, this is a story to frighten us all. In ordinary circumstances, of course, pet fish dont pose a major fire risk youd think, but after an extraordinary drama in Dorset, a cat fish called Kipper has been blamed for a blaze that set a mother and her daughter fleeing for their lives. Its believed that Kipper began fighting with another fish in its tank, whilst its owner, Sharon, slept upstairs. Well, in doing so, the fight caused water to overspill the side of the tank and gushed three feet below onto an electric plug. This sent a power surge up the tanks light cable, which burnt through the lid causing smouldering plastic to drip onto a leather sofa, which then caught fire. It sounds far fetched, but thats what they reckoned happened. So a little bit of a frightener there for anyone, who keeps fish, which are likely to fight in their tank! Married Or Unmarried Almost half of unmarried parents break up by the time their child is five, according to a comprehensive study of unmarried parenthood. There is also a growing number, who have babies, without either marriage or living together and 55% of those split before their child goes to school. The director of the Relationship Research Group said that increasing numbers of UK babies are born to unmarried parents, whose relationships are more unstable. Were seeing a new trend of men and women becoming tentative about establishing any kind of partnership. At least a third of these new parents could benefit from programmes aimed at improving the quality of their relationships and thereby the stability of their union. I dont think to be honest that theres any great news in this, is there? The proportion of births outside of marriage in the UK was 12% in 1981. By 1991, it was 30% and two years ago, it was 42%! Thats 42% of people having children were unmarried. Property If you own a house in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire area, then its the best part in the country as far as investment is concerned. Prices are shooting up here and a new property bonanza is on its way as house sales showed a record breaking start to the year. Thats according to figures just released. Sales soared by more than a third and prices rose by 5% during the first three months, forcing the average value of a three bedroom semi close to £200,000! It actually 192,000, but thats the average price of a house now. The average price of a house in Hull is only £83,000! Thats for an average house. Some are as low as £50,000. So Hull is still a great place to buy property. Its the lowest priced place in the country to buy a house. And with the way things are going, any house here will be a good investment!
