Hi Jeff, It wasn't the laser. We tried two more new combo drives same make and model and same thing happened- even after a reformat! I never found out what happened, or why - it just will not accept that make and model anymore.

The drive is a CD/DVD burner. The CD part plays and records, but if you put a DVD in, it won't play or record. It just makes clicking sounds, like it's trying to read the DVD but can't.
