Not sure if this helps anything, but I've always loved One Nation Under a

[313] AMG Criteria

2002-02-07 Thread Wibo . Lammerts
Was flipping through my copy of the All Music Guide to Electronica last
night, hoping to find something on Vince Watson, Brian Zentz, DJ Skull,
Mundo Muzique...

But there is no info on these people in the book. If your are looking for
info Richie Hawtin, Derrick May or f*cking Moby, it's all in there,
obviously, but also names you (me) wouldn't expect like Michael James, Frank
de Groodt Astralasia.

So I began to wonder what the criteria are to put an asrtist/DJ/group in a
book like this one? Does he/she have to be famous? Sold at least 20.000
copies of a single/album? Major impact on the development of the dance scene
in general?

But apparently you have a major influence on the development of dance music
when you have a mixed CD out Boxed / Global Underground.

Any thoughts? Ideas?

also the mothership connection live dvd is WELL worth checking - i think i
have a parliament documentary where just about all the original detroit crew
recall having their minds totally blown going to check out that tour.

[313] - Adult Only # 12 and 313?

2002-02-07 Thread Mark S Flintoft
Well once again I can't sleep, and as I often do when that happens I
started playing some records. The last record I pulled out was...

Vinyl Line West Station Adult Only AO 12 (though it says AO11 in the
run-out)

I usually play the B side which is a nice smooth house cut co-produced by C.
Carrier and one of my favorite house producers Jef K called Stamper
Square...

Anyways long story short, this morning I decided to play the A side and in
the first breakdown of the first track there is a computer sounding female
vocal that states 'Enter Area Code 313' before the track kicks back in...
It's kind of strange as the label art is what appears to be Osaka Japan's
subway system, while the info side has a few generic skyscrapers on it.

So I am wondering, what this little 313 snipet is doing on a record with no
obvious 313 ties (at least to my over-tired brain;)? The track titles are
A1 West Station, A2 Ladbroke Groove and B1 Stamper Square...any Detroit
signifigance to those?? Is Osaka's area code 313 too??;-)

Not that I actually expect any answers, I just thought I'd share...

Off to try and get some zzs,

2002-02-07 Thread Jonny McIntosh
My favourite Parliament albums are:

Funkentelechy vs Pacebo Syndrome (Flashlight), Mothership Connection
(swing down sweet chariot - not futuristic?!), Motor Booty Affair (Aqua
Boogie is all over the place now with modern RB) and Up For The Down
Stroke (if only for The Goose!)

I realised how militant I can get about Parliament a few months back when
someone moaned round at mine that Motor Booty Affair just wasn't funky.
Grrr! I think Flashlight pretty well shows what he's (Derrick May) on
about. Although there's no real equivalent, Juan Atkin's Infiniti or Deep
Space era Model 500 stuff often has that feel for me. He definitely puts on
his best P Funk voice for singing, too.

Jonny.

I'm as happy as a monkey with a peanut machine

please suggest some parliament funkadelic albums which would help solidify
in my mind what Derrick May means when he says detroit techno is kraftwerk

Yes, there's a reason we didn't call it the All Music Guide to Techno... ;
There *are* hundreds of 313 names in there (many who aren't in the Rough
Guide) and we're probably heaviest on techno, but we did have to scrimp to
fit all the other people out there, ones who've either done something we
judged fits under the electronica umbrella, or had an earlier impact on the
sound. AMG is a listeners guide, so we don't leave artists out just because
they're popular or we don't like their music -- though we definitely take
bad music to task.

But apparently you have a major influence on
the development of dance music when you have
a mixed CD out Boxed / Global Underground.

Well of course not, but for the people who don't know anything about dance
music and want to figure out what Digweed or Sasha or maybe even (heaven
forbid) Danny Tenaglia is doing, we'll tell them what's it all about and if
it's any cop.

Don't forget the several Synewave New York comps. they released (Damon

featured exclusive tracks Detroit artists. Just looking at Vol. 7, with
tracks by Drexciya (Depressurization) Claude Young/Twine (Scarred).
There was a second Elements of Jazz cd as well, though not quite as stellar
as the first if memory serves. That Dave Angel track Lagoon slams on a
good system.

Re: [313] p-funk

2002-02-07 Thread Wes
A couple of years ago Derrick May took a turn at The Wire's Invisible
Jukebox. He listened tried to identify tracks by Herbie Hancock, Olly
Wilson, First Choice, Dade Krama, UR, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Ice Cube, A
Guy Called Gerald (one of the unsung heroes of future music), The
Williams Fairey Brass Band (Acid Brass version of Strings...)

Last track up was Funkadelic's (Not Just) Knee Deep, from Uncle Jam
Wants You (Warners). Here's a transcription of what followed:

DM: Hell, yeah! [Starts singing along] You can go to Detroit now and this
stuff is still on rotation on the radio. This is a big part of my youth.

M. Shallcross: So is this your favourite track from today's selection?

DM: Yeah, everything else is kind of okey-doke. I wouldn't mind playing
this at a party now, just to see what happens. I've heard Rob Hood play
this, but I don't think he played enough of it.

MS: Your famous and somewhat over-repeated equation for Techno was
'Kraftwerk and George Clinton meeting in an elevator'. Does Techno
sometimes forget its funk roots?

DM: Yes, I think so. It was never meant to be just about technology. It
was the sound of man and machine making love. I would love to see
Kraftwerk and George Clinton on the same stage, playing one after another.
That would be cool. I'm still looking out for something like this today.

Wes

I believe this compilation will be available on vinyl as well!

From Matthew Herbert's website (magicandaccident.com):

Due out on Peacefrog Records in February is a 2 CD/2 triple vinyl
compilation of Herbert remixes entitled 'Second-hand sounds' featuring old
favourites along with deleted and exclusive tracks.

(And also as indicated by the bottom of the original message stating the
Only in vinyl tracks.)

Looking forward to it,

In general I would recommend all the labels you mention plus Delsin,
Bitasweet, Neroli, 2000 Black, People, Main Squeeze etc etc. - anything
through http://www.goyamusic.com

Also look out for the forthcoming Omoa label releases through Rush Hour -
this is Recloose's label project and the 12 coming up from Ayro sounds
phenomenal so far - check out audio at http://www.omoamusic.com

Two new Emoticons dropping at the end of next week - followed by an EP from
Future Beat Alliance in March. All the audio is online on the website - the
address is below in my .sig...

[313] chicago-house-inspired italoesque disco / Legowelt

2002-02-07 Thread Jennifer . Wiringer
Greetings all...

The tie to 313 is a slim one, however, I am very interested in the almost
chicago-house-inspired italoesque disco/ electro of the dutch Legowelt (aka
Dj Marquis de Blanco.)

It would be much appreciated if any listmembers could point me in the
direction of some classic material with ties to this sound, and some new
labels/artists (besides the obvious Bunker/viewlexx den haag sounds).

I am currently producing tracks that bear a resemblance to this sound and I
would like to expand my knowledge.

Any ideas/comments/etc welcome.

-J.

Re: [313] p-funk / Derrick May

2002-02-07 Thread Michael D Tyrer
The second greatest set I ever heard was at a Boxing Night STRUTT party at
the Cross Club in about 1993/4. None other than Derrick May.
Just for whats it's worth, the best set of my life, I heard in the spring of
1994 also surprisingly at the same venue, same night - a certain mr r
hawtin.

Re: [313] chicago-house-inspired italoesque disco / Legowelt

2002-02-07 Thread Jennifer . Wiringer

yeah i am familiar with classic italo such as alexander robotnick, klein
m.b.o., etc
i am particularly interested in tracks of this style with an extra dose of
super-acidy warm synthiness...

I was very impressed with (what i saw of/ the last hour or so) with carlos
souffront's DJ set at 2000 DEMF, he played
prior to ADULT./ectomorph. Pretty dark/synthy italo stuff.

hmm i wonder if there's anyone knowledgeable out there willing to make a
mix+tracklist for me...?
: )

thanks for the recommendations/etc,

Re: [313] AMG Criteria

2002-02-07 Thread Mike Brown
So I began to wonder what the criteria are to put an asrtist/DJ/group in a
book like this one? Does he/she have to be famous? Sold at least 20.000
copies of a single/album? Major impact on the development of the dance scene
 in general?

It is entirely up to the editor, who is influenced by the publisher and their
concerns about the market they are targeting.

A few years ago I was asked by the editor of one of those books to compile a
list of essential/important electronic artists, and either write their bios
myself or find people who could help out.

I put a lot of work into narrowing down a list of 120 or so, but before I
could see how many of those I could get good bios and discographies for, the
editor insisted that I include only bands that had domestic releases that were
currently in-print on CD. Then he returned my list with about 3/4 of the
artists removed and with another 30 or so added. The adds included bands like
Aquarhythms and Fluke, which, while not horrible artists, were certainly not
in my top 120. I blew off the project and never took another one like it
again.

RE: [313] AMG Criteria

2002-02-07 Thread John Bush
It is entirely up to the editor, who is
influenced by the publisher and their
concerns about the market they are targeting.

I'd never presume about your experiences, so *please* don't presume about
ours. AMG has never received any type of suggestion, concerning direction
or inclusions, from any outside source (including our publisher), and would
refuse to accept any given. Our publisher accepts exactly what we give
them -- which of course means that any and all complaints about inclusions
or treatment can be laid at our feet.

A few years ago I was asked by the editor
of one of those books to compile a list of
 essential/important electronic artists,
and either write their bios myself
or find people who could help out.

Which one of those books?? Since I've been here six years, I'm safe in
assuming you meant one of those types of books, not AMG specifically.

I put a lot of work into narrowing down a list of
120 or so, but before I could see how many of
those I could get good bios and discographies for,
the editor insisted that I include only bands that had
domestic releases that were currently in-print on CD.

Yikes, that *is* a horror story...sorry your experience was so negative --
obviously the guy was a hack who didn't know a thing about the scene. AMG's
always been given complete freedom (and wouldn't accept less) to write
anything we want about everything we want.

Just clearing up what may have been a few mistaken assumptions...

John
