Good room, decent sound, but overrun with a bunch of drunken hipsters when I saw Stacey Pullen there this past February. Turns out it's on Soundcloud, one of the better gigs I've heard from him in recent times: https://soundcloud.com/uhalldc/stacey-pullen-live-at-u-street fh - >Just noticed this. (313) Juan Atkins - Electric Jungle
Blackmarket Records going for the 'lost' / 'unreleased' tracks gambit. http://www.discogs.com/Juan-Atkins-Electric-Jungle-/release/4088314 At least one - 'Impulse' - has been released before though. It was out on the 'Infiniti Collection' on Tresor, in '96. In any case, they seem fine tracks to my ears, dated mostly by the obviously real-time nature of the audio quality; which of course is not an aesthetic fault. K

Cool, thanks robin I'll let him know job well done:) Linkwood is releasing a split EP of House/Detroit with me in the near future, but I will keep that under wraps until I have dates. But we're not far off. He has a tune coming out soon on prime numbers. He is also working on the next firecracker and an LP (which he asked me not to talk about yet) Possibly some material working with Trusme too but no real details on that. Sorry to be a bit vague. I will say this though Linkwood under a previous pseudonym was called Pylot and he and I played a "live"-ish set at a public life 313list party back in 2001. How did it go?? He played well. Possibly better mixing than Trusme but played in a more pitched-up kinda way. Like a house dj playing techno, but I consider that to be a Detroit related style anyway. I enjoyed the night, even though many people didn't bother coming because Juan didn't show. Trusme has Rick Wade, Andres and Pepe Bradock playing in Manchester over the next couple of months too. Trusme also has a load of new records coming out soon. The latest hotness (Virbrations) is on those Gilles Peterson 12s that have just come out on Defected. (313) juan atkins (ny) - tonight review
So I go to the a show quietly advertised as having Juan Atkins play at '200 Orchard' on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Three semi-brooklyn looking hipster guys, one of whom wouldn't stop playing with his hair, mixing old (old) Aphex Twin with proto trance disco tech-house (beat matching anyone?), to a poor remix of an 808 State track, to what I gather was yet another bad remix (get a trend here?) of Berlin Sunrise. Apparently Juan Atkins will not play (Just got home). As much as I do player hate, and as much as I want to extend a hand to the guys who put this together (Lauren Flax of some sort of Chicago association?), overall, despite all my bickering, in all honesty, it just would've been nice to have a night of real techno, play by people who really know how to play it. Not minimal, not glitchy, not let-reaktor-go-haywire-andpress-record-and-let-a-wonky-kick-and-snappy-snare/clap drawl on on random arpeggio. Just straight up techno. Adios Detroit. I'm surprised at how much other artists give props and not always the artists you think - Annie was giving big props to Derrick May and Underground Resistance in Aus interviews on her recent tour. It's up to them to carry the legacy and educate new punters on the heritage of this music. So, probably Juan Atkin will never be recognized by the masses, but maybe an award would give him some more fame, more bucks and (maybe) 200 more kids will begin to be more interested in techno... ...And we'll have 200 more people who can listen to us when we talk about how music industry's s fake ;) Japo

Ken i wasn't being churlish. i consider the world of commercial music and awards nights as one big giant pile of wombat poop. i sort of thought that on this matter i was vaguely on the same wavelength as others on this list, underground resistance and others interested in independent/underground dance music. the time for techno to get the recognition and dues it deserves was 1989 and it did - millions around the world danced their asses off to detroit music. thousands had their lives changed and started buying the records, djing, making the stuff, starting internet boards, wearing UR t-shirts and making pilgrimages to detroit and putting on underground parties. how namy people turn up each year for the demf (or whatever it''s called)? do you think techno or juan is getting their dues when a fake industry award show mentions his name 20 years after the fact. an industry that ignores you unless it wants to steal your songs (knights of the jaguar) and we're still begging for their acceptance and recognition. james www.jbucknell.com "Odeluga, Ken" <[EMAIL PROTECTED] ones.com> To "Fred Heutte" 01/12/06 09:16 PM <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, <313@hyperreal.org> cc Subject RE: (313) Juan Atkins Up For A Grammy Jeez James, don't be so churlish! Ultimately it's a nice recognition and nothing more. If it happens, excellent, but to hope for an equivalent to a life time achievement award is just silly. Many of the most innovative artists and thinkers have only been appreciated posthumously or in their dieing days. Not to say we shouldn't try to lobby for their recognition, but to hope that Juan Atkins will be recognised as something more than the guy who was sampled in Sir Mix-A-Lot and Missy Elliot in the major music industry's consciousness is hoping a bit much IMO. Why don't we try to thwart Clear Channel first, and then hope for 'Clear'. That said, if you are one of the few who can vote, do it! Oh, and what's up with June Atkinson's comments on this: http://www.discogs.com/release/162067 Prolly nothing to do with Juan, but silly none the less. Applicants who are credited as Executive Producer, Assistant Producer, A&R, and Production Coordinators are examples of non-voting categories. If you think you might not qualify, call Member Services at 310.392.3777 or your local chapter to discuss your questions. so it's up to all the members of The Recording Academy that have voting privileges sorry Mike - were with you in spirit on this one but I don't think there's much most of us can do to influence this vote it's one of those "behind closed doors" type of things MEK "Odeluga, Ken" <[EMAIL PROTECTED] ones.com> To "Hardie, Nick" 01/12/06 08:44 AM <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "313 Mailinglist List" <313@hyperreal.org> cc Subject RE: (313) Juan Atkins Up For A Grammy Not stupid at all. Re: (313) Juan Atkins Up For A Grammy
I heard an interview with Professor X, who was making electro in LA around the same time as cybotron and who is friends with juan atkins, and he said when Missy Elliot was asked what song she sampled she mistakenly said Planet Rock. Anyone else heard this? RE: (313) Juan Atkins officially awarded for the 'International achievment'
I have half a second, so let me say this... Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not shy about voicing an opinion, whether good or bad (and i think i spend a lot more personal time talking about things I like). Like most everyone, I'd say there's my online person, in-person person and professional person- each one being a little more polite than the one before. i still stand by what i said. i don't think other people had any business getting involved with fetroit/Michigan civics issues when they don't live in the place, come from that place, or know any of the factors involved. perhaps you think that my publicly declaring the reasons why juan shouldn't have been included with derrick and kevin were out of line. maybe it would have been enough to just tell people to mind their own business. if i was merely trying to 'expose' someone's dirty laundry or 'prove' how in the loop i am, i would have just spouted off right away. i didn't. i did hint that perhaps there was reasons for juan's exclusion, but evidentally some people can't take a hint. whatever- its just my opinion anyways. but nothing i said was private knowledge. it's all public. i'll admit that the way i said things were probably a little flame heavy (thats that on-line persona that most people have), but speaking up when i think something is wack is certainly a right i maintain, on this list, or in person, or (when it's acceptable), in the print. I don't think that to do my job properly, i have to constantly behave in a consistant manner in my personal life. when i put juan on the cover of urb, with derrick and kevin last year, it was to tell a 20 year old story that is worth repeating. but- perhaps perpetuating the 'big three', as all journalist in this field do, is what contributes to the widely held assumption that none of the individuals should be allowed to exist without the others. that's why i was sure to pose that question to them, in person, and then print the response. maybe i also feel that it is my personal responsibility to counter some of the 'myth making' that is inherent in my job, by stating the contrary in my other communications to the world. also- be aware that a lot of my more skeptical opinions of people comes from working with them on a professional level (or lack of) both as a journalist and before that as a promoter. i never have and never will air that dirty laundry in public as it usually involves other people's money. so i guess this has actually turned into my response in full to this debate. if anyone would like to further discuss this, please do it privately (unless you think it's something that would benifit the whole list. i'm the last person who should tell anyone to take things private.) have a good weekend all. Matt MacQueen forwarded me yussel's reply to him, which was addressed to 313 as well as Matt directly. Why it didn't appear in the Digest is anyone's guess. Anyway, I just wanted to apologize to Matt, I didn't really think he would reply publicly to private e-mail, which is why I phrased it the way I did (asking which it was). I just called it like i saw it. Maybe I'm crazy... if this is all my imagination i'm actually relieved that it's just some bizarre oversight in your communication technique all this time. Personally i'm a fan of direct accountability. i no wait- no one on this list reads anything except dan sicko and technotourist (no offence to either). nahh, if you think there's something great in urb, or WIRE, or XLR8R, or WaxPoetics, or KeepOn, or FutureMusic, or wherever else, tell the list! the articles you wrote about sound interesting.. feel free to plug them, post them online (if you have can, i know that's often not possible), they sound on topic to me. i let my subscription expire years ago when i felt Urb was going downhill... but you're totally right i haven't checked in lately. I always read the Scott Sterling bits back before it got more wide and R&B stars were on the cover. I'm not anti Urb, i'm anti blanket tabloid-y Jerry Springer Show dissing of anyone you feel like hating on. I am anti- any music journalist who just thinks they have to be a bitter trash talker in order to be thought of as 'in the know', or worse, someone who has to trash talk in order to make us ignorant zombies look past the haze of blind fan-dom. Most of us here can. It just seemed to me like you're so dead set on debunking anyone genuine love for the music that you want to come after these artists for reasons that frankly I don't think that many people give a care about... I don't think 313 is a place for exposing all the warts you know and want everyone else to know, if it's irrelevant to the records and the music.. it seems like you feel it's your duty to keep trotting that stuff out as soon as someone is getting praised for something. it's like you think you're doing 313 some great service as a hard-hitting investigative reporter that will bring The Light down to us ignorant sycophant simpletons. I just wanted to tell you it's annoying to see it played out over and over. New day, different thread, but the same haytin. I think it's lame you just have also cast us all in a single brushstroke as not up for debate, not willing to criticize, that's a pretty oversimplified view... some of just have an internal "ill hater" regulation meter, where yours is apparently in need of a tune up. i'm sure you somehow think that your little college radio show somehow makes more of an impact than a national magazine that gives a consistant spotlight to underground music. all i can do is laugh, that's a good one! come one, we've met, it's funny you think i'd think that... I don't think i'm making an impact on sh!t except on how much of my paycheck I spend on bandwidth transfer each month.. ha. Frankly i have no delusions of "making a differece" beyond a fairly niche group of listeners in town and online, and while i'd love national impact, it's not my lifelong goal and I have no delusions of grandeur about what i'm doing. I'm a nobody! I like DJing and digging and the fact that i have an opportunity to share classic music I find interesting every week is something i do for free, and something i'm grateful I have a forum for, however miniscule it is. The site is basically just a ghetto blog for audio files. By contrast, Urb will always reach 10 million more people, if only because it's advertiser supported so it has funding so it has legs, reach, marketing, momentum. That's what it's for. That's why Urb exists. I'm not saying Urb doesn't have a right to exist, it fills a niche for what it is, and it's great people can have writing for Urb as a fulltime job, cause you're into music like we all are, but you're getting paid to write for it and that's awesome, actually, if you like what Urb is all about. Playing/unearthing/mixing records is, however, more fun to me than writing about them, but to each his own and I am glad there are both writers and DJs. And people who do both. But just so you know my show is making NO more than a tiny tiny difference, but one i'm into making, and that's a personal decision I'm comfortable with. I'm not chasing fame as a DJ (obviously! i missed that boat 10 years ago) and I think it's funny as hell anyone would think I am, especially in this country. I also know I could lose the radio slot at any time, so i try to make the most of it while I still can... Also - I'm
