hi jezbo!

i find this issue also mightily irritating, so i opened an enhancement
request in bugzilla at:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6208

if you are in the same camp, you may want to vote for the enhancement.

more votes = more people want this = higher likelyhood of it being
implemented! ;-)

thanx for the heads up!

luckily for us in germany, consumer protection laws wont allow fair

what you are buying.

our ISPs either provide *un-*limited (true flatrate) OR the
bandwidth/GB limit must be specified.

unfortunately, this is not true for other EU-countries, such as

[slim] YAC2slim

2008-01-21 Thread cnsmipe

Hi all,
I just installed this plugin but don't get it working.
Running SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 On Windows XP SP2

I've followed the instuctions in the README.txt

I do get an entry for every call in the yac-log.txt, so I don't know if
the YacLogViewer.exe is ever processed? I tried to run it manually but
nothing happens!

So is anybody running this plugin on the latest version slimserver?

Re: [slim] SB3 freezes while synchronzied

2008-01-21 Thread dcote

thanks guys - i appreciate your taking time with an (almost)
*deprecated* product (SS 6.x).

in the meanwhile, i discovered some similarities with other squeezbox
stops threads:

the boxes usually stop at -0:00 seconds, or the equivalent total song
time. and they stop at the END of the current song, not at the
beginning of the next song. (so do mine)
this symptom has shown up in other threads. while their SBs did not
appear to by synched, there did not seem to be any explanation and/or
solution for it anywhere either.

but mark, you could be right too: i found out that my playlists seem to
contain some kind of junk(?). my mood groovy playlist (~750 tracks)
originally was ~85Kbyte large. didnt think anything of it, until i
mistakenly re-saved it from inside winamp and it shrunk to 14Kbyte
(still had ~750 tracks)!

seems to be the tool i use to develop the playlists (it is personal
playlist manager plugin for winamp), always adds some stuff to the
file, which is invisible. (at least in notepad and winamp). maybe that
junk is buggering up SS...

i will do some testing with the new cleaned up versions of my
playlists and report back.

[slim] New Home Server - Will it Run SC7?

2008-01-21 Thread DrNic

Hi all,
before laying my cash on the line, just wanted to glean the learned
opinon of the Slimdevices Fora!
I am building a new home server - there are some very specific things
it *must* be:
1) Rack mountable
2) Fanless - and I mean completely not even a PSU fan!
3) Running Linux
4) Not a NAS device - I use it for other stuff too (eg home
automation/web server)

So I have been looking around and like the idea of the self build yet
again - those Hush PC's can fit the bill, but the cost is
astronomical!
I have found this little Mini-ITX board:
http://www.icp-epia.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProdproductId=88

it uses this processor: 1.2GHz Fanless VIA C7 nanoBGA2 Processor

I will load it up with the max (1gig) of RAM.
Will SC7 laugh at the spec??
All thoughts welcome!

Thanks,
Nic

I'm using that exact board with 1 GB RAM to run SC7, and it performs
adequately. I also use it as a NAS with a hardware RAID controller.

While testing early releases of SC7 I left SS6 alone on the VIA and ran
SC7 on a Mac mini with a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo. As you would expect it was
much much faster, even accessing the music files on the VIA NAS over the
network.

I've since upgraded the VIA box to SC7 but I do miss the speed of the
mini.

[slim] Wireless bridge? Does it work?

2008-01-21 Thread Espen

I have read here and there that Squeezebox also acts as wireless
bridge. I did a quick test last evening without luck.
When I connected my music server to an SB3 it failed to aquire an IP
address on boot. The DHCP server did not log any attempts either.

The SB3 unix is connected to a Linksys WRT54G with WPA, but the Linksys
unit is not the DHCP server itself. The WRT54G is connected to a regular
wired 3com router with an embedded DHCP server.

Is it worth examining a bit more or is this a dead end? Would it help
with a fixed IP? I do not quite remember now, but I think the firmware
version is 81.

It works great, I use it a lot. You need to make sure of a few things:

Use a crossover cable (unless the NIC on the server is auto-sensing)
Make sure bridging is enabled - go back through network setup with the
server connected via ethernet and you will see the option to enable it.

The Duet Receiver works identicle to a regular Squeezebox... minus

[slim] Why does a playlist-only scan require a full database cleanup?

2008-01-21 Thread smr888

I do not understand why a playlist-only scan should require a cleanup of
the database.

I have been asked not to discuss this in the bug tracker; apparently
extremely long, potentially unnecessary scanning is not considered a
bug. (Possibly it's a feature?)

My comments from bug 6308 are listed below:

*

I have four playlists. The scan of those playlists finishes in 28
seconds.

I am then forced to sit through:

Merge Various Artists (1547 of them), takes 5:04

Database Cleanup #1 (31782), takes 1:34

Database Cleanup #2, might have finished in 2 minutes or so, hard to
tell.

So basically 9 minutes to scan my four playlists, with a lot of scans I
didn't ask for.

*

At the risk of trying your patience, can you explain to me why
doing the playlist checks you mention should require [the above listed
scans] . . .

From the outside, I would have thought that a user-initiated
playlist-only scan would have meant something like this:

I have created this playlist. Please add it to your list of
playlists.

It apparently also seems to mean:

Please make sure every song in the playlist is present in the database
so you can play it.

which is fine, but I would not have thought it _also_ meant

and while you're at it, conduct an eight minute cleanup of my
database.

and I'm not completely sure why it should have to mean that.
Especially when those other database cleanup scans take place AFTER the
playlist scan (if the messages to the user are to be believed), meaning
that the playlist scan doesn't even benefit from scanning a newly clean
database, if that was supposed to be the point.

*

Any help appreciated. I cannot see how these additional database scans
and cleanups could under any condition be considered necessary. If you
want a full database cleanup, then do a full scan! If you've added new
music, do a full scan! (Or a new music scan.)

But if I just want to create a playlist and add it to my list of
playlists, that process should not require anything beyond checking to
make sure that the playlist entries are in the database -- should it?

Re: [slim] Why does a playlist-only scan require a full database cleanup?

Nope, that is not it. I took an existing playlist, whose entries were
already all in the database, chopped it down to four songs, saved it
under a different name, and requested a playlist-only scan. The
playlist portion, as usual, took about 30 seconds.

Now it is running Merge Various Artists -- 1:38

Now it is doing the database cleanups, which will take another five
minutes or so.

Is this really necessary?

Re: [slim] Why does a playlist-only scan require a full database cleanup?

2008-01-21 Thread Siduhe

Andy, I have exactly the same experience as the OP. My system does a
full clear and rescan at 4am and I have not added any music today. I
use MusicIP, but no changes to the database/cache there either. I also
get 2 database cleanups on a playlist only scan as follows (c/p):

-Playlist Scan ( of ) Complete 00:00:03
Merge Various Artists (0 of 0) Complete 00:00:13
Database Cleanup #1 (0 of 0) Complete 00:00:20
Database Cleanup #2 (0 of ) Complete 00:00:17
Database Optimize (0 of ) Complete 00:00:14
SqueezeCenter has finished scanning your music collection.Total
Time:00:01:07-

It's not an issue for me because the scans are done pretty quickly (my
playlists are short), but I don't think it can be as a result of new
music needing to be added to the database.

[slim] Duet compared to Squeezebox

2008-01-21 Thread gian

hello All,

I do not think I really understood what's behind Duet.

Is it just a different way to manage the music library, moving the
display from the receiver to the remote?

How does the sound compare?
Any improvements over dear old SB?
New features?

thanks for your time,
-Gian

Re: [slim] Windows Home Server (search problem)

2008-01-21 Thread Siduhe

Short answer is yes you can, (no direct experience, but there are plenty
of threads about it).

Try 'this' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/search.php?searchid=942506)
search to get you started.

If you have problems with the forum search, try doing a site specific
search in Google like 'this'
Usually works where the forums search doesn't.

I've since upgraded the VIA box to SC7 but I do miss the speed of the

Interesting, Dave. Thanks!

Does this lack of speed relate to using the web browser or the SB3

The duet is two things, the receiver and the controller. The receiver
is basically an SB3 with no screen, pretty much everything else is the
same. The controller is however all new, and is best compared to the
Sonos remote - although it's better than that ;)

for the time being, yes it is.

This is the second unhelpful response you've given me, kdf.

I'm sorry you feel that way. However, it was intended as a very simple
response to a simple question. The process is there for many reasons.
Every check through playlists involves gathering new data (even if the
data is already in the database), which then needs post-scan processing to
sort out where it fits into the database. In time, we may work out ways
to get rid of post scan, but for now it's necessary. It isn't always about
NEW data, but doing as good a job as possible to match the playlist
information with all that has been done to organise the metadata for the
tracks referenced.

In many aspects, it's similar to a check new and changed scan, but in
this case only the files listed in playlists and the playlists themselves,
instead of the whole library.

Yes you can that's exactly what I'm doing here.

There isn't a WHS installer for it though. Just copy the windows

the WHS is headless then use the remote desktop to log in.

You can set the music directory either using the d:\music format or you
can also use the UNC share notation //servername/music both work.

Re: [slim] Why does a playlist-only scan require a full database cleanup?

2008-01-21 Thread kdf

  Lots of room for optimization.

Optimisation is an ingoing process, and not applicable as a bug report
unless there is a specific benchmark to be achieved. A goal without a
specific, measurable result is of dubious value.

The optimise process is simply a call for mysql to optimise the tables.
Even with no 'new data', there is manipulation. I would also be curious
as to how much activity the db is seeing not from scans, but from general
use: ratings updates, play counts, this-party plugin activity etc. All of
these would have an effect on the db and may play into the time taken for
mysql to
OPTIMIZE TABLE tracks;

However, as a fun investigation, try making schema_optimize.sql an empty
file and see what happens. It should certainly save time, but the result
on the db would probably depend on the contents of the db. This sql file
not only optimises tables, but rebuilds the contributor_albums in response
to bug 4882.

Not really, but you're entitled to your opinion.

If the server is doing A and B and C and D, while B, C and D are
unnecessary in some cases, and taking 80% of the time required, then

I'm referring to your choice of word, Jim, not saying elimination doesn't
have beneficial effects. Simple elimination, however, isn't the case
here, as it is a needed process, and it's far easier to demad change than
to implement it (less accountability in the former). I think it would be

scan is described as playlist-only when it is actually NOT tracks,
then playlists, then every other housekeeping task we usually do, it
is not well described.

Consider further the user preparing for a Christmas party, who is
simply trying to get a playlist into SlimServer, and finds himself
waiting ten minutes every time he tweaks the playlist and wants to try
it again, and you might begin to understand the frustration that this
problem engenders.

I think it would be useful to know why the OP's case seems to take
noticeably longer than other posted results, especially given the
rather small playlist content.

That is a good question, and I don't know the answer. The other posted
result, where the scan phases all took in the tens of seconds, was
significantly quicker than mine. Sidhue didn't mention how many tracks
he is scanning, though . . . I have something like 31,000, which I take
to be a large number. I also have a decently fast machine but by no
means a barnburner, and running Win XP, which I believe is probably
slower than Unix/Linux for the purpose.

I will mention that upping the database cache size from 10,000 to
100,000 seems to have resulted in the time for the subsequent scans
being cut to about four minutes from eight, which is nice . . . but
it's still a long time to turn around adding a playlist to the system.
In addition, one has to be a bytehead to figure out how to increase the
cache size. The system ought to prompt the user about resizing its own
cache, or do it dynamically, or SOMETHING that isn't require the user
to find the proper configuration file and edit it.

I still don't completely understand why any further scanning is
necessary for a playlist. As a list of tracks, any metadata searches
or whatever of the playlists (are there such?) should just look through
to the database tracks. I don't know what else you were alluding to
when you said:

Every check through playlists involves gathering new data (even if the
data is already in the database), which then needs post-scan processing
to sort out where it fits into the database. . . . It isn't always
about NEW data, but doing as good a job as possible to match the
playlist information with all that has been done to organise the
metadata for the tracks referenced.

What is this new data? If the tracks are already in the database,
there isn't any new data . . . if they are not, then by all means add
them . . .

It sounds like the working assumption at design time was that playlists
might contain tracks not already in the database, so the scanner had
better handle that on the fly by adding them. IF that's correct, I
guess it's nice that it does that, but not so nice if it does it to the
cost of all the users like myself, who put together playlists in text
files based on what's already on the server, and just want to add them
to the Slim database.

[slim] Transporter freezing

2008-01-21 Thread norderney

Over the last couple of weeks since getting my Transporter it has frozen
and pressing the standby button has no effect. When this happens web
interface and remote control do not respond. I have found the only
solution is to power off the Transporter, wait about 30 seconds and
then power it back on again. This usually gets it working. I am just
a bit concerned that the only way to power off the Transporter is by
switching it off at the power socket because like the SqueezeBox it
does not have an on/off power switch.

Is switching it off at the power socket likely to cause any damage to
the internal PSU or other parts of the Transporter. The Transporter
and SqueezeBox are the only audio devices I know of that DO NOT have an
on/off power switch.

Re: [slim] Remote access to slim server?

2008-01-21 Thread Eric Seaberg

Instead of using iTunes, log on to your server with a web browser.
Look for the HELP link and click on that. You should see a link called
SoftSqueeze. Click on that and follow the directions to install it on
your work computer. Once it's installed you should be able to play your
library.

In my case, my cable company has issued a DHCP address for my cable
modem that COULD change on a regular basis. It usually stays the same
for MONTHS at a time, but your mileage may vary.

With that in mind, if you have a DHCP address, checking it on a regular
basis should help your catch the change when it happens.

Once you've got playback happening, make SURE you setup your server to
bandwidth limit the connection to your work computer. A 128k stream
sounds pretty dang good on a pair of computer speakers and will
probably not bottle-neck your OUTBOUND connection from home.

[slim] Wireless Signal with (2) Squeezebox V1s

2008-01-21 Thread buck

Howdy all!
Sorry that I havent spent any time on this forum - and now I come
begging for help.
I have had a Squeezebox Version 1 for for a few years now and I love
it. I recently bought another Version 1 one from eBay and I seem to
have an issue. With my first Squeezebox, I get great signal strength -
78-85%. It is located 1 floor below my wireless router (Linksys WR54G)
The new one that I bought will not get above 10% strength, even with it
located in the same room as the router.
Both are at firmware version 40 and I am running a semi recent build of
SS 6.5.5 (It seems to wreak havoc when I try to play my FLAC files also.
Really stutters because of the low strength)
My firewall is setup to allow all trafic from the IP address range that
I allow DHCP on the router to assign.
My other devices on the network seem to be just fine. (2 laptops - one
with built in wireless card one with a Belkin PCMCIA card wireless G. A
desktop Dell machine using a USB Belkin wirelessG adaptor. A Nintendo
Wii -- anyhow a bunch of stuff that is working just fine)
It sounds like it would be a Squeezebox issue, and if that is the case
- does anyone have any idea as to how I may remedy? (Even if it's not a
SB problem - any advice would be appreciated)

Again, thanks for taking the time to read this. And thanks in advance
for any advice.

Why the need for a rackmount chassis? I would assume you're not
planning on placing it in rack or cabinet unless you have other
rackmount equipment.

I'd be leery of building a computer in a rackmount chassis with no
fans. Even if the PSU and the CPU can get by, the hard drive may not.
Cram it all into a tiny space and you're asking for heat related
problems. I've seen some rackmount chassis that were fanless, but
they're generally intended for building things like routers and
firewalls with either solid state drives or very little disk activity.

I too get this problem sometimes when trying to search in the forums,
and sometimes (at least twice that I remember) I've had a memory php
error or something like that, don't remember the error very well.

[slim] Help with Annoying Message in Squeeze Box

2008-01-21 Thread xcool

Hi, I just updated my Slim Server to 6.5.4. This server is running on
my Infrant ReadyNAS NV device. The new server seems to be running
fine, except my squeeze box player now displays the following message
all the time:

Server can't connect to internet to obtain firmware update

I couldn't figure out what the problem is. Can someone please help me
get rid this annoying message on my squeeze box?

Thanks very much.

Re: [slim] Why does a playlist-only scan require a full database cleanup?

2008-01-21 Thread Greg Klanderman

Consider further the user preparing for a Christmas party, who is
simply trying to get a playlist into SlimServer, and finds himself
waiting ten minutes every time he tweaks the playlist and wants to try
it again, and you might begin to understand the frustration that this
 problem engenders.

Using playlists is very clunky right now. Just the fact that you have
to go select rescan playlists as you make changes makes it a pain.
Look at the timestamps, if the file changed, re-read it. Of course
you cannot do that today if the playlist scan takes 2-10 minutes. But
if the server is smart about only running those extra steps when a
library change is detected that could effect the result, and doesn't
re-scan playlist files whose timestamp is unchanged, and only re-scans
lazily as you browse into a playlist, it should be completely
seamless.
