Hi Jeremy: I’ve seen that error when a gfortran other than fink (eg, /usr/local/bin/gfortran ) is mixed in. This version of ccp4 is now out of date, and CCP4 has asked that we instead direct people to their v. 6.4.02 binaries which are now 64-bit and include an automatic updating system. http://www.ccp4.ac.uk/download/index.php#os=mac — Bill William G. [Fink-users] Xsane
Hi folks: I have a canon N650u, a scanner that works fine but I can no longer find a viable OS X 10.5.X driver for. Re: [Fink-users] coot-0.5-pre-1-874 configure fail
Hi Steffen: I've seen this on one machine and have a report from another person, but haven't managed to track the problem down. I've also reported it to the software author upstream. The problem appears to be with sed, but the info file specifies SED=/usr/bin/sed, and in my case this is the only sed on my machine, so unless you changed that for some reason, I'm afraid I am at a loss. I've spent a few hours trying to track this down. My compilations on intel 10.5 work fine. I can compile coot 0.4.1 on intel 10.4.x but run into the problem with the 0.5-pre-release, on 10.4.x. Others get it to compile fine on intel 10.4.x, so I am at a complete loss. Re: [Fink-users] fink on a nfs shared volume
Hi Andrew: I think the problem is that fink writes its files as owned by root, and unless you do lots of non-default stuff with NFS, you can't write to an NFS-mounted directory. [Fink-users] off-topic: procmail question (nmh, rcvstore, procmail and formail are conspiring against me)
Hi everyone: Sorry this is a bit off-topic, but since I am using several fink packages for this, I feel marginally justified asking here... I use procmail to sort all my mailing lists (including fink, textmate and so forth). On lists where I get a bulk digest, I can split it apart by piping through a command like formail +1 -ds the_mbox. Recently I started using sylpheed, which uses MH formatted mail instead of mbox. There are various ways to get procmail to cope with this. It works in the absence of formail, if you just give a directory name like this: foo/. However, if you have formail, you must pipe through yet another program, which I installed with the nmh fink package: STORE=/sw/lib/nmh/rcvstore in what follows, FORMAIL=/usr/bin/formail as well. So what I would like to do is save a single bulk digest as individual mails in both formats, one to browse with sylpheed, and one with pine. The mbox command works fine, and does the right thing. The rcvstore one however seems dysfunctional. The digest header is removed, but the mails aren't split up, so I wind up with a single MH file deposited in my textmate MH directory that has the header for only the first of the (eg 30) emails it contains. # TextMate.app mailing list :0 * [EMAIL PROTECTED] { :0 c | ${FORMAIL} +1 -ds | ${STORE} +inbox/textmate :0: | ${FORMAIL} +1 -ds${MBOXMAILDIR}/textmate_mbox } This is beginning to frustrate me. So, I needed to reinstall fink. My office mate did the same thing about a week earlier and doesn't have any of the problems I am having. I used the installer, added unstable/main and cyrpto, configured to not use binaries and use the nearest site (US). Then selfupate-cvs, and update-all. It built a bunch of stuff and then off I went to start installing my missing apps. I tried to install python25 and it failed on db44 and tckl, which it didn't for my office mate (reported to fink-dev list). I installed them with apt-get and they seem to work. That is I could build and use python2.5 I did notice that some of the download mirror sites didn't work and I had to tell it to try the next one several times. Does anyone have any suggestions at to what is going? I just rebuilt tcltk and db44 on my intel iMac with no problems, so it must be something other than the packages. Is psync messed up, or is it more fundamental? The fink program itself works fine, so I assume perl is ok, but I am not sure what to try next. I'm trying to install MacOSX::File using cpan as a work-around, but if there is a problem with fink's psync, this would only mask it. Thanks. Bill William G. [Fink-users] ubuntu synaptic
1) Per the recent thread on fink-devel, i agree that the whole stable/ unstable thing needs to be rethought. At the very least, choosing which tree to point at should handled via 'fink configure' rather than making the user kludge internal files. Additionally, i like the idea of turning unstable on by default. 2) It should be easier to find desired packages. Ubuntu Linux's frontend allows a database search of not only package names, but descriptions as well. I find this eminently useful. 3) If we can get a maintainer to update/rewrite Fink Commander, then i would hold up Ubuntu's 'synaptic' tool as a model GUI. This is absolutely the best package manager i've ever seen - i like it better than OS X's Software Update. And it's already built around debian! I started using ubuntu about a year ago because of my positive experiences with fink. I tried both autocutsel and autocutsel -selection PRIMARY (seperately), but sadly neither worked. Maybe an Apple X11 thing. It did sound promising. This is probably really simple, but it is driving me nuts. I am sending this from KMail, a KDE mail application that is x-windows-based. Unlike other X11 applications that I can paste from the OSX copy-buffer (or whatever it is called), I can't do this into KDE (and I can't do the inverse operation). If I want to copy a string of text from a web page displayed in safari, I first have to paste it into a non-KDE X11 application (xterm, nedit, whatever), and then select that text and paste it into KDE. That seems insane. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a better work-around or fix? I should mention I am running this and other kde applications as stand-alone in Apple's X11 rootless environment, 10.4.5, etc. --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by xPML, a groundbreaking scripting language that extends applications into web and mobile media. Re: [Fink-users] dyld: Library not loaded: /sw/lib/libintl.3.dylib
Presumably, fink remove sed ssed will repair the immediate problem of what happens upon login. Hopefully, rebuilding sed or ssed would cure it. (You need to figure out which of sed or ssed is providing your /sw/bin/sed, which you can do by dpkg -S /sw/bin/sed.) Dear David et al: Oops. The reason this didn't work was that I did it on the wrong machine. It turned out that the error was on my local machine, but I only saw the message when I sshed into any of 3 remote machines (all with what I wrongly thought to be identical fink installs). My local machine (my laptop) indeed had sed. Simply removing and reinstalling the package cured it; I did not even have to recompile anything. Please accept my apologies for wasting your time. The problem, in any case, seems to get worse if I have a lot of launchd items or if one I made is malfunctioning. The problem is also exacerbated if one doesn't cleanly exit a shell with the exit or logout command. If you often terminate a session by other means, and type w you will see a long string of (zombie?) processes. Short of rebooting, I don't know how to get rid of them. Perhaps if there is some way to get rid of those processes without rebooting, it could be run at login (naturally, with yet another launchd process). --- SF.Net email is Sponsored by the Better Software Conference EXPO September 19-22, 2005 * San Francisco, CA * Development Lifecycle Practices Agile Plan-Driven Development * Managing Projects Teams * Testing QA Security * Process Improvement Measurement * http://www.sqe.com/bsce5sf ___ Fink-users mailing list Fink-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/fink-users

Hi Aron et al: Glad you have it working. Gary Kerbaugh wrote a script called pkgdiff that takes a directory (or directories) as an argument and compares the actual contents with contents that would be expected on the basis of the bom (bill of materials) files of the package receipts in /Library/Receipts. It reports missing files and extra files... This might be a useful way to check to see if the X11.app and X11SDK Apple installers worked properly, and perhaps the relevant bits could be incorporated in a fink install script. Perhaps the order of installation may matter - i.e. in the past I installed xmms before gaim. I know it shouldn't matter but perhaps it does in that xmms installs an older version of gtk. While that seems close to superstitious behavior, I will do the same order of operations on the eMac and see if in fact it works there as well. There may be some other explanation but I already tried reinstalling Fink on that machine to no avail - of course this was a few months ago so there may be some other bug fixes that resolved the problem. [Fink-users] x11 munging
Dear Aaron: I think Dan was trying to be helpful. It is very hard to infer other people's mental states from a pile of ascii text. Having said that, this does seem to be a reoccurring problem. I just helped a colleague with this who is one of the most computer-literate people I know, and has written more code than I have English. Anyway, I think there are at least 3 problems that occur with regularity: 1. The user doesn't realize that both Apple's X11 and Apple's X11SDK are separate installs and both need to be done. Apple doesn't make this any easier in that they hide the X11SDK as a non-default install in the Xcode CD. They no longer even have it as a separate download. Why they can't put it all into one package is beyond my comprehension, but they don't. 2. The user does install both of these, but the installer somehow skips some of the header files or other parts of X11. 3. Fink changes X11 even if it warns. Since I haven't had the problem myself, I can't verify if this is because of what the user does or what fink does by itself, but in a way it doesn't matter, because the net result is the same. In any case, I think if fink doesn't detect the X11 headers, it warns and asks to install X11. Previously one manually installed something called system-xfree86 to tell fink that an Apple or other non-fink X11 existed. Also I have gotten the impression that fink gets stuck at this point, so even if you go back and (re)install the missing X11SDK, fink repeatedly asks to install X11. My impression was that the old way of manually installing system-xfree86 was less problematic. The one sure but drastic way to solve the problem is to delete /sw, /usr/X11R6, and /etc/X11 and reinstall both Apple X11 packages and then fink in that order. In short, I think Aaron's problem with fink and X11 is quite common. Maybe the most idiot-proof means of dealing with this is for fink to test for the presence of Apple's X11 first, perhaps by looking for the X11.app in /Applications/Utilities or the package receipt(s), and then if that is found look for the header files, and if those are missing, quit with a warning that the user must manually (re)install the X11SDK before continuing. [Fink-users] re: MacOS X11 vs Fink X11
Hi Perry: I've never encountered an instability with Applex X11.app, so I can't comment on that, but there also exist some advantages (apart from convenience), depending upon your needs. In my case the most important advantage is the quartz acceleration of the (proprietary) window manager. For complicated molecular graphics displays (pymol, molmol, etc), the non-quartz versions are so slow on my G4s that they are essentially unusable, whereas the X11.app quartz acceleration makes them almost indistinguishable from true native OS X graphics display programs. I think there are two disadvantages. The first is that it is proprietary, so free software purists will object. But free software purists most likely run GNU-Linux or freeBSD or similar rather than OS X. The other is the fact that the user has to know to install separately the ~4MB SDK package, which doesn't install by default. I think most of the problems people have with fink trying to install its own X11 derives from the perverse separation of X11 into a 50MB package and a 4 MB package, as if installing a 54 MB package would somehow inconvenience some users. If fink could be made to detect the presence of /Applications/Utilities/X11.app and the absence of header files and somehow warn the user to install manually the SDK, or better yet, somehow offer to install it from the on-line download, it might go smoother. [Fink-users] Re: tenon etc
Did I make my point? or should I quote some more stuff? I'm afraid I found this almost impossible to follow with all of the nested quotes, etc. I'm assuming this isn't just random ranting and raving. If so, could you please formulate the complaint very concisely and back it up with arguments presented in some sort of logical hierarchy so that someone like me, who would like to have faster-running X-windows programs but basically has no idea what you are talking about, can understand it? If you do this carefully, you are much more likely to convince someone to take up the cause (although I wouldn't count on Ashcroft's DOJ; they are too preoccupied with scrapping the Bill of Rights, Articles 1,3-10). You could even make a web page, which would probably be more effective anyway. Just be very careful to stick to facts so you don't wind up providing a meal for their libel attorneys. Bill Scott
[Fink-users] Sourceforge project of the month
Dear Max: Congratulations to you and to all of the fink developers. As someone who has greatly benefitted from fink but has yet to find a way to contribute anything, I wanted to take a minute to mention that fink has been the single most important thing that makes Mac OS X much more useful to me than OS 9 and before. Fink quite literally has made it possible for me to use my Apple computer as a real unix computer rather than as a glorified typewriter. I read on the SourceForge page that "Apple has at one point supported us by giving Christoph a beta release of Mac OS X 10.1." Would it be worth having us write to Apple and tell them how important fink has been, and how nice it would have been to have supplied a beta release, for example, of 10.2, and encourage Apple to do everything they can to support fink in the future? I actually had an apple rep track me down last week to ask about why I was grumbling about 10.2. So on some level they must be interested... Again, thanks for doing this. I think it is safe to say that fink is greatly appreciated by all of us. William G.
