My understanding is that most of the video stuff didn't make it into VPC7 (at least with this initial release). That's correct. VPC still emulates a S3 Trio card. The Macintosh version is better in that it can give it more than 4 MB of RAM, but it doesn't help at all with gaming and is a nonstandard extension anyway. firewire networking
Hi all, I have an icebook in which I wish to network to a PC using firewire. What's the best application on the mac side to allow me to do this? If you're using X 10.3 (not sure about 10.2), just go to System PreferencesNetworkShow (the lower of the 2 pop-up menus)Network Port Configurations, and click the New... button. Type a name, and select Built-in FireWire from the Port pop-up menu. Then, you can configure it just like a regular ethernet port by selecting the port name you just typed in from the Show pop-up menu. On versions of OS X that don't support this by default, IIRC there's an extension you can download from Apple called IP over FireWire. Just search the apple.com site for it. Since it wasn't a huge amount of time between when they purchased the code from Connectix, do you suppose it maybe had to do with something as simple as a time crunch and not some ulterior motive. One of the things that I am waiting for as well. If you have VPC ready to ship but are waiting for SP2 to be released, there's still no reason why you can't release the Windows 2000 version or the version without an OS. I disagree there, if for no other reason that they wanted to test compatibility with SP2 before they released it. I think that made sense. It's the same binary with a different OS image file. And they advertise VPC 6 as only working with Win2000 and WinXP, when in fact it will work with 95 and 98 as well. Agreed it will work, but 95 and 98 aren't what they consider supported OSes for the most part. Marketers suck ;) ps - btw I fully expect that Longhorn will have some kind of integrated VPC (ala Carbon) if Microsoft follows through on their plan to break all existing Windows programs for it... There are products in beta that let you run multiple virtual servers on top of Windows 2003. I can see them integrating some of that, but then again, they may want to charge extra for that feature set, like they do now with terminal services. There are many reasons. Think of the buyers (or even sellers) who don't see the difference and purchase a Virtual PC version without an operating system. Think of the buyers who purchase the Windows 2000 version. Why do they have to be punished running an older (MUCH older, as a matter of fact) system? Will they receive XP upgrade later? I think with the amount of security issues plaguing Windows these days, that was actually a right move. Whether or not Service Pack 2 delivers security, that's another matter. And they advertise VPC 6 as only working with Win2000 and WinXP, when in fact it will work with 95 and 98 as well. AFAIR Windows 95 and 98 are discontinued, so are you really that surprised? DOS and probably other operating systems probably also work, but people are on their own when using them, and this is understandable. Also, they might not have been tested thoroughly, for obvious reasons. Then there's the reality that for every satisfied VPC user there's less of a need for them to run Windows. It's not that easy. VPC is a nice add on for the mac, but definately not wirht the full retail price. BUt then again, what DOES MS sell that's worth their retail price? OBviously there are some very knowledgeable people on this topic here- anyone know of a way to tweak VPC so I can run this game? Keep in mind, this is an older game dating back to the days of the 333 mHz machines on the PC side, so we're not talking about intensive processing to run it. DOn't mean to be pushy, just would really like this option if theres a way. If not, I'll just have to settle for the basic windows functionality. I know of people using VPC to run Linux or some other OS instead of windows. It's not all that common, but I know of several cases where it's not being used with windows. Could also be the video cable. I've seen a Pismo 500 that locked up or shut off when moved. I have SuSe Linux 9.1 on my VPC, but I haven't had any luck getting my networking set up. In Windows it works great from my Airport Extreme, but not in Linux. Yes, the trick is to put your VPC Scripts somewhere other than in your user's documents folder. I keep my scripts on a completely different hard drive (using my desktop), though any shared folder would be fine. Just double click on the actual PC (VPC document) to launch it. I have the Applescript menu on my menubar and put an alias to each PC in the scripts folder. Much like the old Apple menu in classic Mac OS, I use the script menu as a launcher. You can also put your PCs on the dock and launch them that way, though you will have to set it up for each user. I moved them with no luck. even copied everything from the one user's preference folder to the other preference folder. Every time I load VPC, even if i try to open the PC in question directly, I get sent to the PC setup assistant. there seems to be an option to use an existing PC in there, but it wants me to provide the HD file, which I can't find. The game installed just fine, no issues on that front. First problem to poke it's head out was a message saying that directX 7.something or another wasn't compatible with my version of windows. I got around this by installing a newer version of directX (8.0a). After it was installed I loaded the game, it asked me if I wanted to register, and after that the program just seemed to disapear from the screen. No error message. This is a similar issue to when I was using an old 333mHz machine without a vid card. Once I got a vid card it ran perfectly, even though the game is technically supposed to run without a vid card installed. I therefore assume it's a vid card issue, but am not completely sure. Here's a link about a guy with about 50 OS's installed using VPC on a 17 'book. http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/vpc/ I have not tried VPC 7 but have never had issues installing any OS on VPC 6 and unless someone gives me a G5 system, I guess I won't be needing VPC 7 anytime soon. I remember using VPC 5 (I think) which recognized my 3DFX card on a PM8600/250 so I could play Pandemonium using the card for hardware acceleration, glide drivers worked on Win98. External burners from old internal IDE burners - would it work?
I had an idea. Instead of dropping the big bucks for an internal burner for my Wallstreet, maybe I could put an old IDE burner to use. My idea would be to get a cheapo USB enclosure and plug it in. Pismo firmware version after a processor module replacement
Regarding the recent discussion about the latest Pismo firmware, I just noticed from the System Profile on my Powerbook Firewire/400 (Pismo) that I have Boot ROM Version 3.2.7f2. Machine Model:PowerBook CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (83.2) Number Of CPUs: 1 CPU Speed:400 MHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB Memory: 512 MB Bus Speed:100 MHz Boot ROM Version: 3.2.7f2 Serial Number: Sales Order Number: I remember (I think) updating to Boot ROM Version 4.1.8f5 ages ago but the processor module (661-2386, P3589) was replaced under AppleCare a few months back after I had frequent problems booting up (bad processor I think). I assume the Apple tech must have replaced the whole processor board and I guess it includes the processor board ROM. So perhaps the new board only has a processor board ROM with an older version of the firmware (3.2.7f2). I seem to recall there was a reason for the 4.1.8f5 update but I forgot that reason (accessing Firewire drives?). Should I update the firmware to the latest version for the Pismo (4.1.8f5 I think or later?)? (I'm thinking I should). Other related trivia: 1. The new board no longer has my Serial Number or Sales Order Number reporting via System Profiler. 2. The temperature sensor (using the TAU on the PowerPC 750) seemed to be more inaccurate (unusually high) until OS X 10.3.5 disabled that functionality entirely. As long as the PC Card supports USB 2, you should be fine -- although you may need third-party CD burning software. Obviously they didn't disable the program too much, everything so far except networking and sound are just fine, and networking is fine if I connect to ethernet, just not over wireless. The disadvantage of this approach is that you'll need mains power to use the external enclosure. Why would it have to be USB 2? USB 1.x can do 4x burning just fine. Reading at anything more than 8x or so might be pushing it, though. But the drive should still work on USB 1.x That idea ought to work fine, assuming your USB-IDE bridge works. I use an external generic PC-oriented USB burner with my Pismo that can burn at 4x just fine. Are batteries covered under Applecare?
I just bought a used TiBook with 8 months remaining on the computer. The battery runs down to nothing in about 5 minutes, recharges to 100% in about the same time, but no lights will light. Sounds dead to me, unless there's some magic to perform.
