a fix for the rcon exploit (as I said in my previous post). That is, I asked
them if fixes for the rcon bug and another crashing bug were forthcoming,
and they mentioned the upcoming large CS:S update. This was in multiple

If the rollup doesn't include a fix for the rcon crash exploit, that would
be a real head-scratcher. It's well-documented at this point, and very easy
to obtain more information on.

The big question is: When will this big update come out? And nobody, there

Oh well, that's only a half year ago then.

VALVe seems a bit non-professional for me, especially because there's still
so many bugs with this game. You've might have seen the huge topic about the
bugs on the steam forums.

Why won't they fix it?

August 25th '09 was the last bugfix. See update news for the game on
your Steam. I'll just clarify that the promised fix will include the
same changes as they did for OB on 7th of Dec '09 and the mail i got was
almost a week ago. The update propably does not have a fix for the rcon
flood sefgault that some have. I've seen it happen on CentOS and Debian.

which mean this rcon crash won't fix?
the upload/download still work for CSS?
i though it already fixed because i tested with my server

 https://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=104632
it say "The crash seems to occur because SRCDS is kicking the player who
just triggered the RCON protection ..."

but my condition of this crash is different to Kigen.
It crash at same address at win 2003 ( as i remember), and the different
things in no need player ingame.

I sent them crash dumps and complete packet dumps for the rcon crash many

Re: [hlds] RCON Crash work on some condition

2010-01-26 Thread Kyle Sanderson
I can't seem to reproduce this on my new x64_86 Counter-Strike Source
server, I tried Vanilla, than installed MetaMod 1.8, and then Sourcemod 1.3.
Same result every time, no crash and I was successfully added to the ban
list. Than again it could also require players to be ingame, Kigen seems to
have figured it out
https://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=104632however he didn't
share any details.

As for current bugs that I've had accross Linux platforms, my server
sometimes hangs when it's loading (Usually freezes around this line):
appdatacache.cpp (311) : Assertion Failed: !"Implement me"

Anywho, is your server currently having issues with this Raydan? It could be
kernel/Linux Dist specific. I know this worked on RHEL4 and CentOS 5.2 (both
x86) (I know this is the Windows server discussion list, however I've never
heard of anyone having issues with this on Windows, only Linux.)

Cheers,
Kyle.

[hlds] RCON Crash work on some condition

2010-01-25 Thread raydan
from this page http://code.devicenull.org/index.php?title=Misc:HL2_Exploits

Invalid RCON Crash

SRCDS will crash on some machines if you attempt to use an incorrect rcon
password too many times. It seems that some machines are affected by this,
while others are not. Valve has been notified a few times, and has been
unwilling/unable to fix this.

   - Fix: Firewall off rcon (TCP port 27015) from everyone except for
   certain whitelisted IP's

"It seems that some machines are affected by this" "Valve has been notified
a few times, and has been unwilling/unable to fix this"

Is valve don't know why "some machines are affected by this" or valve know
it but don't want fix it?

This exploit must fit some condition. that why some machines affected.

can valve staff tell me, you don't want fix or don't know how it work.
if don't know how it work, i can tell why some machines work, some doesn't.

please fix the exploit

thx

ps. don't tell me sourcemod rock lock & kac can fix this exploit

[hlds] RCON / Console Hacks or just bugs?

2008-09-23 Thread Jake E
I'm guessing this is just one of many Gmod bugs that affect server owners
and make them spaz out. Well, when I look (remotely, either via Steam lists
or RCON lists) at 7:23:26 for example, only one person is on with a score of
3. When I refresh lets say, oh, 1 minute or so later, I see three people
logged on and it says they have been on for at least 10 minutes. Is that
because it includes file downloading time, or because rcon is being lazy?
Or, is it a hack? Another thing is that someone can have a score of 4 one
minute, a score of 8 the next, then a score of 2. Is this suiciding to avoid
the DeathMatch autokick, or a hack?

That is all.

Re: [hlds] RCon Bad Password Exploit/Crash

2008-08-04 Thread Keeper
You need both a debugging tool like Visual Studio.

But you also need that build's program database file (.pdb). This info is
left out of the distributed build ( well for windows anyway ). So without
these pdb files you will just get a bunch of assembly language in the
debugging tool.

Best thing to do as a server operator is when you see a crash like this,
disable all addons and see if you can reproduce the problem. If you can,
then get the mdmp files to VALVe. If you can't, then start adding the
addons back one by one until it happens. Then get with that addon publisher
to see if they can get it fixed. With SourceMod, those guys are usually on
top of things and get the fixes out quickly.

I was just wondering what is needed to look at mini dumps or is this
something that we can't do? Some times i get crashes, but I don't like
to say there is a issue with anything until i know if it is something i
added or the game itself. although i'm sure that 9/10 times its
something i did heh

You can use Microsoft's debugging tools for Windows...these are essentially
minidump files. You can get more info about debugging tools here:

I was just wondering what is needed to look at mini dumps or is this
something that we can't do? Some times i get crashes, but I don't like
to say there is a issue with anything until i know if it is something i
added or the game itself. although i'm sure that 9/10 times its

Re: [hlds] RCon Bad Password Exploit/Crash

2008-08-03 Thread 1nsane
You can't set them too high really:
 "sv_rcon_maxfailures" = "10" min. 1.00 max. 20.00
"sv_rcon_minfailures" = "5" min. 1.00 max. 20.00

But you can lower it to one second... So unless someone is spamming it you
should be fine:
"sv_rcon_minfailuretime" = "30" min. 1.00

You can also set the following to a stupidly high number until Valve
fixes it (if, for instance, you don't have access to the firewalls on
your servers.)

 sv_rcon_maxfailures : 10
: : Max number of times a user can fail rcon
authentication before being banned
 sv_rcon_minfailures : 5
: : Number of times a user can fail rcon authentication
in sv_rcon_minfailuretime before being banned
 sv_rcon_minfailuretime : 30
: : Number of seconds to track failed rcon authentications

Well, except for the third one, which you should set lower. ;)

2008-08-03 Thread Nephyrin Zey
Rcon bans someone for too many failed password attempts (to discourage
guessing/brute forcing). Currently, when it tries to ban someone, it
just flat out crashes instead.

You can fix this by blocking rcon access for all IPs but ones you
pre-approve, with whatever firewall you're using on your server. Rcon
uses TCP on your servers port (27015 by default), all other game traffic
uses UDP.

Only for TF2 I think... the workaround is either confine TCP traffic on your

[hlds] Rcon Nuke Exploit Still Exists

2008-05-06 Thread Ian Shaffer
Title says it all. It seems to me that the fix to this problem has been
shelved, as the last I heard from Alfred was that it would be out in a
day or so, and that was over a week ago. I am very eager for this update
because I do not have root access to several of my servers and therefore
am not able to set firewall rules.

Any update from Valve would be appreciated!

The email you quoted was about medics and unlockables in TF2 (and despite
the change in subject, my email client stuck it in the thread about tf2).
I think something went a bit wrong when you went to reply.

As it probably involves rewriting part of the query parsing code, i'd
wouldn't be suprised if it took a non-trivial amount of time to develop a
fix, especially as it'd need quite a bit of testing. Luckily the
workaround's so easy, really

2007-07-26 Thread Andrew Armstrong
I'd be careful issuing that server when players are there :)

In our experience running servers with large ban lists is that the operation
to 'listid'(or even lots of 'addid' commands, eg from doing: exex bans.cfg)
will block the server for several seconds as the command is processed.

Users will see this as lag.

Subject: [hlds] rcon disconnect because of long banlist?

Hi,

We recently increased the number of bans on our CSS-servers from around
3 000 to around 14 000. We use a script that via rcon->listid fetches
all bans from all servers, synchronizes with a master database, and
distributes new bans to all servers. However after increasing the number
of bans, listid doesn't work anymore when issued via rcon. I ran listid
in HLSW and simply got the following (other commands verified to work):

22:31:54 listid
22:31:54 HLSW NOTE: Disconnected

The server console verifies that it has received the command with 'rcon
from "80.202.19.13:63412": command "listid"'.

When running listid from the server console, all 14 000 bans are listed
correctly.

Is this expected behaviour of rcon when transferring huge amounts of
data? If so, can rcon be instructed to allow larger amounts of data?

Cheers,
Einar

Re: [hlds] rcon address logging

2006-12-06 Thread Ronny Schedel

Are you really sure? If you go the the say and say /skill as a normal
player, hlstatsx will answer with something like this:

L 12/04/2006 - 22:47:12: "rcon Console<0>" say "Player
your rank is 1500 of 1 with 2400 points" " from "HLSTATSX IP:PORT"

If you click on your website to server overview, it will do a rcon status
from your website host. Maybe there are some other things that will generate
a RCON event.

Best regards
Ronny

[ Converted text/html to text/plain ]
Its NOT correct...
If I hlsw into the server and type say Test...sometimes it comes back with
L 12/04/2006 - 22:47:12: "rcon Console<0>" say "test" "
from
"MYIP:PORT"'
and sometimes it comes back with
L 12/04/2006 - 22:47:12: "rcon Console<0>" say "test" "
from
"HLSTATSX IP:PORT"
So tell me how is that correct?

Its correct, just ignore it.

There is a bug in the rcon address logging.
I use hlsw and chat into the server and it sometimes lists my IP address
correctly and sometimes lists someone elses IP address for what I sent
into
the server. (I have hlstatsx installed and its broadcasting logs to that
and it sometimes shows that IP for text I sent into the server).

[hlds] Rcon Stats

2006-08-25 Thread Frazer
I am trying to nail down the exact meaning of the rcon stats response.

If someone knows where this might be documented, a link would be
appreciated.

Here's what I have gathered so far - please correct my assumptions, if
wrong:

CPU: snap shot of current total CPU utilization on system. There was a
thread on this a long time ago where Whisper was questioning what this datum
really means. Was that ever resolved?

In: total number of inbound packets (?) since start up

Out: total number of outbound packets(?) since start up

Uptime: running time, in minutes(?) since start up

Users: I have no idea

FPS: snapshot of server FPS

Players: snapshot of number of players, including specs and bots, on the
server

Any guidance would be appreciated.

If you run something like Mani Admin you have a function built in that
allows you to set up RCON commands at scheduled times. I am sure alot of the
other addon packages may offer something similar.. would running an Add-on
be an option?

Does anyone know of a way to send an RCON automatically to a Windows
Dedicated server at a set time please?

I have full access to the server as we own it & co-locate but I need to
set
a password or run a different config during the day to close access.

I have always used Gamehost to satisfy my needs but moved to FireDaemon to
support both our Source & HL1 ports & I just cannot configure FireDaemon
to
run ports at the time I need.

18:00 Friday until Midnight Sunday, for example.

So ending a sv_password through a local script or executing server.cfg
through same would be a winner for me

Any ideas gratefully received

What does rcon status represent?
It does not seem to represent actual ICMP ping times
Nor does it appear to represent the players scoreboard pings or any sort of
latency measurements that any clients net_graph displays.
eg. rcon status pings show the pings of all players are all over 100
If you are in the server, you will notice that all the players average
scoreboard pings will be around 50 and your own net_graph latency
mesurements may be even better than that!
Any idea's what it really means?

Yeah I've noticed the same thing. It used to be accurate in HLDS.

In my opinion the 'status' ping is a more accurate representation of the
actual lag perceived on the client than the numbers on the scoreboard or
net_graph. Source netcode is stuffed :/

[hlds] rcon stats not working?

2005-04-28 Thread Whisper
--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
Issuing the "rcon stats" command on a Windows SRCDS we managed to achieve
the following results
 21:49:23 stats
21:49:23 CPU In Out Uptime Users FPS Players
0.00 29954.48 39790.56 978 27 63.97 21
21:49:27 stats
21:49:27 CPU In Out Uptime Users FPS Players
0.00 28501.79 36326.46 978 27 63.89 21
The server has 22 out of 24 players in it
I know we have good servers, but seriously.
 Is this functionality broken?
 Are Valve aware of it?
Is it on the to do list?
 Thanks

DOH!

Sorry, I had another thread going where I had mentioned that I was
using SRCDS. I spaced it on this one. Thanks for the patience and

Run a packet sniffer. Is the server returning the info? It could be
that it is not being parsed correctly at the client.

Rcon doesn't seem to return stuff to the remote client sometimes - for
example if I do an 'rcon listid' from a remote rcon tool it doesn't
return anything to my session. The command is still executed - it runs
properly on the server and the console lists the ids, but nothing is
returned at all to the invoking rcon tool.

Seems to do this in-game and a few other things we've tested as well.
Can anyone else confirm?
