2015-10-26 Thread Cameron Seay
What is the correct syntax to move a file from USS to MVS? I am using:
cp file.name "//MVS_data_set(member)" but it's not working.

I sent this to the IBM MAIN listserv but I don't think my account is
working correctly.

Re: detaching dasd attached to a guest

2015-08-15 Thread Cameron Seay
DASD 203E CP SYSTEM ZOSA0E 0
Ready; T=0.01/0.01 18:23:37

But I don't like the look of that; shouldn't it say LNX104? The guest it
is attached to is LNX004. We have been labeling the MOD-9 where the OS
lives the same as the guest, So when I ask Q 2314 I get:

DASD 2314 CP SYSTEM LNX004 1
Ready; T=0.01/0.01 18:27:44

Which is fine. The dasd we add to guest LNX004 is labeled in sequence
LNX104, LNX204, etc. It may be wrong on our spreadsheet. To be on the
safe side I will just find some free dasd to add to the guest in question
and fix it later. We have a production zOS guest with a lot of MOD-9s
attached to it and I don't want to mess it up. I will get my part time
sysprog to make sure I am re-attaching the correct disks. We are okay for
now. We are not in a crunch for dasd yet, and I want to err on the side
of caution.

I LOVE THIS STUFF!!!

Thanks, Neale!

I have several dasd volumes attached to the wrong guest. When I try to
detach them I get Device does not exist message. I just want to assign
 them to another guest.

 Thanks in advance.

Adding DASD to a Debian guest

2015-08-06 Thread Cameron Seay
I have attached 3 mod-9s to a guest where Debian is the OS. Q DASD sees
the new dasd, but of course Debian can't see it until it's in a Linux
filesystem. We don't know how to format it while in Debian.

Any suggestions?

Re: XRDP

We have had problems with VNC also. We want to use xrdp because: 1) to us
it works faster, and; 2) the Debian guests will also have to access a
Windows environment. Using xrdp means we will not have to have a VNC
server running Windows side.

I don't think you want either of those, you just want to run vncserver

Re: repo for PHP5 for SuSE 11 sp3

2015-04-25 Thread Cameron Seay
Thanks so much for the much needed education, Mark. The issue is we have
not deployed SuSE on z as it should have been done. I think the fixes for
this are easy because we are now rather good at cloning, and we can just
start from scratch with a proper installation. Does SuSE have any academic
licenses? We were supposed to have one with Red Hat but there is some
confusion around that. But I blather.

Thanks!

You shouldn't need to access the installation media. If you have
registered your system, you should have the Pool and Update repositories
automatically added that live on nu.novell.com. Then it's a simple
zypper in command to get what you want. If you have a good number of
systems that are going to be doing this, then it would make sense to
install the Subscription Management Tool (SMT) add-on product and register
 your systems against that.
 https://download.suse.com/Download?buildid=l8FuDkiYOg0~ If nothing else,
SMT will provide a local mirror copy of all the SLES RPMs, saving a lot of
bandwidth for downloading packages to lots of systems.

and are using the Open SuSE
OSS repo and I don't see php on it. It's an issue with our unorthodox
installation and not the distro. Any tips on a repo I can access that
 has
  php?

First, mixing openSUSE RPMs and SLES RPMs is a rather bad idea. The two
were never intended to co-exist. Second, there aren't ANY openSUSE RPMs
for the mainframe available for SLES11. (That just _very_ recently changed
for SLES12, and I'm not yet familiar enough with the whole setup to talk
about it any detail.) If you're talking about x86_64 only, then reference
 the first point: bad idea.

Still, to answer the question that was asked, if I do a zypper se -s php
on an openSUSE 13.2 system, I get lots of hits coming from

Re: repo for PHP5 for SuSE 11 sp3

2015-04-25 Thread Cameron Seay
I think that is because your install media contains them all and is one of
your repos. We have had trouble accessing the ftp server with our
installation media (which of course has php) and are using the Open SuSE
OSS repo and I don't see php on it. It's an issue with our unorthodox
installation and not the distro. Any tips on a repo I can access that has
php?

I don't know why you would say that. From one of my SLES11 SP3 systems I

What do zypper ca and zypper se php show?

How do I assign a read password to a disk

I want to create a minidisk for my students to link to with read only

What do I need to do to give my new disk a read pw?

Re: Creating an accessible disk

2015-04-02 Thread Cameron Seay
My apologies. I didn't realize this was an issue with VM, and I can see
why. I was thinking about NFS and doing something quick and dirty that
way. The write access is immaterial. I at least want them to link to one
of my disks. Read only will be fine. Can I just attach another minidisk
to my guest and let them have read only access to it?

Thanks.

 Cameron,

I'ld never thought I would once say this, but if your students need
simultanious write access to a CMS formatted disk (MW link), then ISPF is
the way to synchronise the various users and allows updating multiple files
on the same disk. (Given that you work on only a single lpar, so that
ISPVM can talk to all users of the disk).
If you have the option, I would advise to use SFS, much easier, file level
control and works across lpars, both in an SSI cluster and/or via APPC/VM
 connections.

For multiple write access, you grant ALTER access in RACF. For a single
writer/multiple reader solution, you grant CONTROL access. All that only
need to read will need READ access.

Configuring a second NIC to do NATing

Within linux, you can use either yast to configure this, or just call

 qeth_configure -h
 qeth_configure parameters

to configure the device. To check for the device, you can use

 lsqeth

NAT itself is configured with SUSEfirewall2. The configuration is found
 below

 /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2

Please search for the term masquerading in that file, it is quite
 well documented.

The SuSEfirewall2 service must be running to really do the NAT of
 course.

Labeling multiple DASD volumes at once

2015-02-21 Thread Cameron Seay
Is there a way I can label multiple dasd volumes at once? We are labeling
the volumes to match our guest names as we have a script that works this

This would save me a heck of a lot of typing.

Thanks.

The trick here is to write a little EXEC that has a list of userids and
matching RDEV(s). Have the exec repeatedly invoke CPFMTXA.

Let's say you have SOME FILE:

 1125 CAMERON
 1126 ALAN
 1127 BRUCE

 LITTLE EXEC:
 /* */
PIPE SOME FILE * | stem fmt.

 do i = 1 to fmt.0
parse var fmt.i rdev userid .
 CP ATTACH rdev *
EXEC CPFMTXA 666 userid ( LABEL
if rc 0 then exit rc
 CP DETACH
 end

But when you format a volume, you also put a label on it, so you could do
 it then instead.

Letting all users log into Tight VNC

2014-10-01 Thread Cameron Seay
Hello again!

I am running SuSE 11 SP3, and am using an image that was set up for me. It
seems when I use a clone from one of the gurus VNC *always* allows users
to log in under their own id/pw. If they are non-root, they, of course,
have no root permissions. When I use install media myself I have to 1. go
in and configure xstartup to use gnome by default (which now is no problem)
and, 2) I can only use VNC as root. I still cannot figure the trick in
number 2 out. I looked for the xstartup in the clones I get from more
experienced folks in .vnc and *I don't see it*. When I do my own install
of VNC xstartup is .vnc. Also, with the clones I don't have to use a VNC
password, just the userid and pw of that specific user.

Bottom line: I need to let my students log into VNC under their own account.

We will talk about why we are using VNC and not CLI solely later. We're
working on that one.

Thanks as always!

Re: Letting all users log into Tight VNC

2014-10-01 Thread Cameron Seay
I read back over my message and see it wasn't quite clear enough. My
objective is for them to log in as *non-root*, that is, with the general
user account that was set up for them. As it stands now, when I start VNC
I am presented with a *VNC* password screen that upon authentication takes
me to a root GUI (gnome). What I was trying to explain at first was the
clones I use from more experienced admins already has VNC configured, but
instead of asking for a VNC password, it merely asks for the Linux id/pw of
the user, and logs them into a GUI for *their* account. For some reason,
when I install VNC on my own from scratch I can't replicate that behavior.
I get the scenario in the 3rd sentence above. That is not what I want.

Thanks!

On Wed, Oct 1, 2014 at 9:32 AM, Veencamp, Jonathon D. jdveenc...@fedins.com
 wrote:

What we do when people want to actually sign on to VNC as root, below are

So I made a script to replace those files with root-enabled-logon, and
then the system self-schedules to turn that off at midnight (because you
can't trust users to lock the door behind them)

This is useful for vendor products that insist on GUI root installs. If
you are cool with root, and not forced to solve the problem via sudo, then
 this works.

 Vncallowroot.sh
 #!/bin/sh

 # Allow root access to gui by replacing file
 sudo cp /etc/sysconfig.bak/displaymanager.root
 /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager
 sudo cp /etc/opt/gnome/gdm/gdm.conf.root /etc/opt/gnome/gdm/gdm.conf
 #
 service xdm restart
 service xinetd restart
 #
 # Undoes this at mightnight by Scheduling file to be replaced again at
 midnight
 at -f /opt/local/bin/vncdenyroot midnight

and the vncdenyroot script does the opposite.

ok ... let me guess: what you want to do is

 1. run yast2 remote

 and allow remote administration

 2. make sure that your system starts in graphical mode (runlevel 5).

Now, to let your students in, the authentication subsystem must be
configured to know them. This is either by some local users, or by
configuring some remote authentication like LDAP or NIS

When connecting to the system with VNC, you will be then presented a
GDM (or XDM if GDM is not installed) where all locally available users
 should be able to logon.

Adding CPUs

2014-07-24 Thread Cameron Seay
It's me again, everybody!

We are using DIRMAINT.

I need to increase my virtual cpus to 4. I know how to add virtual storage
via DIRMAINT. No problem. Adding CPUs seems a little trickier. All of
our guests include LINDFLT, which is configured as follows:

 PROFILE LINDFLT
 CLASS G
 IPL CMS PARM AUTOCR
 IUCV ALLOW
 MACHINE ESA
 MAXSTORAGE 8G
 STORAGE 1G
 CONSOLE 0009 3215 T
NICDEF FFFC TYPE QDIO LAN SYSTEM VSWITCH1
 SPOOL 000C 2540 READER *
 SPOOL 000D 2540 PUNCH A
 SPOOL 000E 1403 A
 LINK MAINT 0190 0190 RR
 LINK MAINT 019D 019D RR
 LINK MAINT 019E 019E RR
 * added by DZR
 LINK TCPMAINT 0592 0592 R

In my reading it seems like I am to modify the MACHINE ESA statement to
include the maximum number of CPUs available, but I want to run it by the
braintrust to make sure. Also, once the maximum number available is
defined, how to I make it sl that GUEST_X always has 4 each time (the other
guests are not so needy).

Thanks.

Enabling SSL for access to a z/OS guest

2014-07-24 Thread Cameron Seay
This may be a question for the z/OS board, but since all of our z/OS lives
inside z/VM guests I will ask it here first.

Our IT staff wants us to use SSL so that outside users can access the z/VM
LPAR without having to get vpn accounts. Currently they do. We access
z/OS via logging into a VM LPAR and then dialing into the z/OS guest. The
3270 client we use has SSL capability. What needs to be enabled/turned on
on the VM side to allow a connection via SSL? The IT folks are going to
open a port for this purpose.

Thanks.

Suspending and starting a Linux server

2014-07-24 Thread Cameron Seay
I have what I think is a simple question. Maybe I'm not clear about how to
stop and restart a Linux server, but I was under the impressing that if I
have a running Linux server in a guest I could suspend it and then return
to the state that the server was in when I suspended it. My question comes
from a need to go into a guest that has a running Linux server, switch over
to CMS to do something, and then resume the server's work. I know how to
#cp stop or #cp begin, but the only way I know to get back to the server is
to ipl it again. Is there a way I can go back to the processing point I
was on the Linux server before I stopped it?

Thanks.

Linux on System z does support hibernation. It is documented as suspending
and resuming, but it is not a suspend like you suspend a laptop. It is
more like hibernation where all active memory is written to a swap DASD
before Linux stops. See the device drivers book for the level of Linux
 that you have (
 http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/linux390/documentation_red_hat.html
 or
 http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/linux390/documentation_suse.html)
 to read more about it.

However, for the most part you probably only want to issue CP commands, so
use the vmcp Linux command to do that (as others have stated.) If you want
to update CMS files on a minidisk owned by the Linux server, just use
another id to do that. Detach the disk from Linux (or re-link it read
only), then link and access it r/w from another id and make the updates.
No need to stop Linux for either of these methods.

Re: Using DIRMAINT to copy an existing guest

Mark:

That is what I call very cool. Let me be clear, DIRM finds available DASD
from the pool (in our case MOD 9s) and gives them to the clone? For
example, the clones will have volumes E150, E152... E15n, which are all
named the same for each clone anyway, and find DASD for them. I want to
make sure I'm clear on this.

Thanks

DIRMAINT will use available space from the various DASD volumes you've
told it to manage. That means the cloning does involve actual copying, and
not some sort of thin provisioning.

You'll need to know the name of the db2instance, mine is (most
 unimaginatively) db2inst1.
Your mileage may vary. Look for it and make the proper substitution.

I think you'll need to make PATH point there and to a couple other places
 DB2 likes to find things.
 I'd do this:
export db2inst=/home/db2inst1/sqllib
export PATH=$PATH:$db2inst/adm:$db2inst/bin:$db2inst/misc

Creating the variable db2inst just makes for less typing, you don't have
to do that; you could just do all the typing.
But why, when shells are so convenient? :-)

insightful. The main guy that sets our physical environment up chimed in

Is it a physical volume? (Which, using a hypervisor, may be mapped into a
logical volume, or, via a SAN, is declared physical also despite being
mapped across one-- or more-- actual physical devices.)

Is it a logical volume? A logical volume at the hypervisor level looks
like a physical volume to the instance which likely contains multiple
 logical volumes.

With the abstraction of volumes the way they've been of late, the word, I
believe, is becoming more and more ambiguous.

Though, really, the query for free DASD -- devices -- implies physical
 volumes.

Mind you, with the expanded use of SANs, all bets are off as to where the
 LUNs really map to.

That is the situation. When the volumes were created, they were named to
indicate what was free. But two folks did it, and one used the label FREE,
but I forget what the other one was. I have enough labeled FREE for me to

could be used by a guest that isn't currently running. In my various

then QUERY again to be sure. But if it shows FREE .. it is probably just

If a visible volume has been assigned to your VM LPAR it is

If an available dasd volume has been formatted so as to remove any

If an eligible volume has been placed in the pool of dasd that you take

When an unallocated volume is allocated for use by one or more virtual

A volume that is currently neither attached to SYSTEM nor a user is

Indeed, it would be. :-) We must infer from your post (you didn't say so
explicitly) that you want to use the z/VM FTP client to move files around,
but you are getting the UNKNOWN CP/CMS COMMAND error. Having FTPSERVE up
and running on the remote VM system is half the battle, but there's more.
You first need to VMLINK TCPMAINT 592 on the client-side system. That's
where the TCP/IP user files are located. In particular, FTP MODULE is
 (the FTP client) is there.

As Tomas suggested, you will be assigning complete disks to each user,
so the easiest approach (at least for the 700 and 701 addresses) is to
find unassigned disks and then format them and assign them to each user.
Check with Rich or some other LINUX type as to the kind of formatting
needed. It has been so long since I formatted any of these that I have
forgotten the requirements. You should have enough free devices to do
this. All the devices are 3390-9s (10017 cylinders). We started with 439
of these volumes. I don't know how many have been taken already, but
there should be enough (80) for your 40 users still free. As for the 191
disk space, these will have to be individually assigned in DISKMAP.

I'm kind of surprised that each LINUX user needs 2 full 3390-9 volumes,
but if that's what the LINUX guru is saying, then so be it.

What is the status of the 8100? There's a huge amount of additional disk
space available there, but last I heard (several months ago), it was
just getting powered on. I'm pretty sure we have no connected channels
to it, since I haven't been asked to update the IOCDS, so it can't be
used, although it may have been potentially formatted from its own HMC
function. Have any FICON cables ever been purchased? Has any plan for
connecting and formatting the 8100 ever gotten started?

My question: Disks 191 and 900 are exactly the same for both users. For

different slightly in their labeling: 700 is MM2101 on for user LINUX001
AND MM2104 for user LINUX002, etc. I know how to use DISKMAP somewhat.
 But
I'm not completely clear about how to apportion DASD for these users. I
sure don't want to overwrite an address and I know DISKMAP will warn you
about overlaps but I would hate to mess up the addressing. I was with the
VM sysprog when he defined these, but I forgot exactly what I'm supposed
 to
do. Do I find more minidisks labeled MM and assign them sequentially
in DISKMAP? I have never allocated DASD before. I am going to need about
30-40 guests and I have the DASD for it.

 Thanks!

Problem with keeping tcpip up

2013-02-14 Thread Cameron Seay
All:

Someone may have seen this: I have a z/VM 5.4 LPAR configured. For some
reason I have to manually go into tcpmaint and turon on tcpip (using
xautolog). I can then connect via a 3270 client and log in. But for some
reason the connection breaks (I don't know why) and I have to log back on
to tcpmaint- turn off tcp with FORCE TCPIP, and then turn tcp back on with
XAUTOLOG TCPIP. I am careful to DISC out instead of logging off. It will
run for a while, then the connection will break again.

Anyone have any ideas?

My question: Disks 191 and 900 are exactly the same for both users. For
disks 700 and 701, the disks where Linux is going to live, the disks are
different slightly in their labeling: 700 is MM2101 on for user LINUX001
AND MM2104 for user LINUX002, etc. I know how to use DISKMAP somewhat. But
I'm not completely clear about how to apportion DASD for these users. I
sure don't want to overwrite an address and I know DISKMAP will warn you
about overlaps but I would hate to mess up the addressing. I was with the
VM sysprog when he defined these, but I forgot exactly what I'm supposed to
do. Do I find more minidisks labeled MM and assign them sequentially
in DISKMAP? I have never allocated DASD before. I am going to need about
30-40 guests and I have the DASD for it.

Thanks!

  Sent by:Linux on 390 Port LINUX-390@VM.MARIST.EDU

My saga continues all locsite fix 80 command allowed me to proceed
with my RHEL 5 installation. I am using FTP to a Windows server where the
RHEL5 code lives (version 5.7 for s390). I unpacked the ISO file in a
directory. When I begin the FTP installation, it seems to be looking for
an updates.img file in the /images directory. I have an /images directory,
but no updates.img file. I am not using the .iso installation file, should
I be? I was working with Brad using the exact same approach, only he was
using RHEL 6.1. My University does not have a license for 6.1, but does
 have a license for 5.7.

I am making progress, but am stuck on this. Any suggestions?

Check query disk to make sure the 191-a disk isn't at 100% usage.

If you login to the guest and run the 'filelist' command, you'll see
the record length (LRECL) and the number of records (RECORDS) for the
initrd. The LRECL for the initrd should always show 80, and if you
tell me which update of RHEL 5 you're installing I can give you the
expected number of records, to make sure the file was transferred
 correctly.

For example, the RHEL 5.7 initrd is 132080 records, and the RHEL 5.6
 initrd is 119579 records.

Remote HMC access

2011-10-03 Thread Cameron Seay
This is not a VM question per se, but maybe the group can help me. I am
trying to access my HMC remotely. My school requires I use a VPN. The IP
address, gateway and mask are set by my school, and are supposed to work
with this VPN. I can ping the Gateway from home, but not the assigned IP
(it is static and not DHCP).

I used the CUSTOM NETWORK SETTINGS in the HMC, but I think I must have
missed a setting. I have the IP set for eth0 and routing enable. Does
anyone know the generic settings for remote HMC access? Thanks.
