I suppose it depends on how responsive (and even predictive)
the system really is. I've noticed no such bursts from any
of our cars, and on several the aux pump is dead or disabled.
Not definitive, by any means.

you'll get no heat at idle, overcorrected by extra heat at the start

Yup.

Share cropping was finally eliminated with the invention of a

Your asking two different things. A TV signal, (antenna, CATV)
is a modulated signal with video and audio on the same cable
with a threaded "F" connector. To view it requires tuning to a
particular channel, say 3 or 4.

A portable DVD player probably has video an audio on separate
outputs on RCA connectors. (all three are the same except for
the color).

To view RF will require a tuner to turn it into "base band"
video and audio. There are computer cards that do this.

To view baseband on a computer monitor that only has an HD15
"VGA" connector, you need a scaler.

MCM Electronics has one, part number 83-9682 for $60

It's not a Hall-effect sensor. Those are more expensive and

The centre console on my 280SEL (with column shifter) has a fifth switch. It

Re: [MBZ] OT: Our Political System

2008-02-28 Thread OK Don
>From Wikipedia (I know, not a authoritative by any means, but very handy):

Lincoln's Suspension of Habeas Corpus

Under the United States Constitution, habeas corpus can be suspended
pursuant to the constitution in cases of rebellion or invasion. See
United States Constitution. The Confederacy was rebelling, thus
suspension of habeas corpus was both legal and constitutional. After
habeas corpus was suspended by General Winfield Scott in one theater
of the Civil War in 1861, Lincoln did write that Scott "could arrest,
and detain, without resort to ordinary processes and forms of law,
such individuals as he might deem dangerous to public safety." After
Chief Justice Roger B. Taney attacked the president for this policy,
Lincoln responded in his First Message to Congress in December 1861
that an insurrection "in nearly one-third of the States had subverted
the whole of the laws . . . Are all the laws, but one, to go
unexecuted, and the government itself go to pieces, lest that one be
violated?"

Later in the war, after some had criticized the arrest and detention
of Congressman Clement Vallandigham of Ohio, Lincoln wrote to Erastus
Corning in June 1862 that Vallandigham was arrested "because he was
laboring, with some effect, to prevent the raising of troops, to
encourage desertions from the army, and to leave the rebellion without
an adequate military force to suppress it. . . . Must I shoot a
simple-minded deserter, while I must not touch a hair of a wily
agitator who induces him to desert?"

What else? Well, not much, I guess, but I've written 3 books, designed and
built several houses, restored 2 National Register large Victorian mansions
and the Georgian Colonial Revival house I'm living in; restored coupla '67
VW's 25 years ago. Dropped a lot of iron from B-52's onto Vietnam,
including Linebacker II missions to Hanoi in Dec 72, to help bring an end to
that national tragedy of Vietnam. Sat on alert with nuclear weapons for
about a third of 13 years ready to launch in less than 15 minutes and
deliver nukes to targets in USSR, contributing to collapse of that union and
helping to end the cold war. And some other stuff, including lotsa stuff
I've forgotten.

Taking orders for key tops? 'Don't think so. Well, not yet, anyway, but
what is one willing to pay? Maybe, I can be persuaded.

BTW, "taking orders" reminds me - I do very well at most anything
voluntarily, but I don't "WILL" (as in "You WILL do this or you WILL do
that." in the military context of "taking orders") very well.

Re: [MBZ] Bouncy speedo needle and wonky cruise in the 300TE

2008-02-28 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Yeah but the thing that has me stumped is that it only did it that one
time. Usually if a MB speedo develops bouncing needle syndrome it is a
fairly regular event, usually infrequent at the start and gets worse
until it is a permanent feature of the car.
Perhaps there is a wonky earth, the hall sensor gets power from no 5
fuse and earthes at the W1 ground behind the cluster.
I did undo the speedo cable to test the hall sensor resistance and then
put it all back together but then I drove 20K's to a wrecker and it was
fine, it was on the way back that the needle started to fluctuate and
hasn't done so since.
If the speedo cable is borderline, perhaps the hall sensor firing up
affected it enough to make it bounce. Apparently the hall sensor works
on magnetic pulses, so as the speedo turns the magnet affected it and
made it bounce.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Our Political System

2008-02-28 Thread Rich Thomas
That is actually the Confederate Battle Flag (stars and bars), different
from the Confederate flag. Here in Texas there are still Confederate
flags flown on Confederate day or something, I mistook them for French
flags (which I thought odd to be seeing in Texas) as they look sorta
similar.

Oh, and we have Mexican flags, Texas flags, American flags, and a couple
others too that fly here and there.

argument should be considered rather apart from a caricature of the author.

think about who the bigots are today and not who the bigots were 50 years
ago in alabama. don't just be a mindless dupe of the media and education.

we all "learned" about how nero burned rome, fiddling or something or other
as it went up in flames. nero said it was the christians who did it, but
once the christians seized power, it was dogma that nero did it.

guess who seems to have done it after all?

investigate some more about lincoln and form your own conclusions as to whom
he did or did not love.

2008-02-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Anybody have a 85 190E 2.3 manual? What kind of mileage should this
sort of thing get? Fueleconomy says 17/24 which seems low to me. This
thing can run on regular gas so was thinking it might be cheaper to
drive than even my 2.5 turbo, but not sure. I know for the 2.2 auto
they say 26/30, but I got 36 with the one I had that John then had and
sold to that crazy dude in iowa.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Chickens

2008-02-28 Thread Zoltan Finks
Gosh, I hope that a chicken killer or a cat killer would not automatically
be a child killer.
And I'm glad you mentioned breeding rather than training. I hear too much of
the assertion that a dog is what you make him.

Another thing to consider along with a dog's breeding are the individual
variations in "personality" among dogs. You can have a strict breeding
program, and even so, the individual dogs have different tendencies. This is
why I evaluate each dog without too many presuppositions.

A good herding-type dog can still be a killer of its flock animals.

Sam Dickson was the author of the article about Lincoln.

I found out a little bit more about him.

He is a member of the KKK. He was their lawyer. He is a member of several
white supremacist groups. He ran for governor on a segregation platform.

He is a supporter of David Duke and a friend. He is a frequent contributor to
Storm Front a white nationalist KKK organization.

He is a nut. I would think if he is critical of somebody that would be an
endorsement for that person.

I am a conservative republican and this guy makes me sick.

associated with a manual.

[MBZ] lincoln and Racists was Re: OT: Our Political System

andrew strasfogel wrote:

http://www.ihr.org/jhr/v07/v07p319_Dickson.html

WHOA! Did you actually read that?

That may be one of the least disguised racist articles I have ever read about
Lincoln.

Here are a few quotes from the article.

"The fact that Lincoln was willing to go that far (opposing slavery) early in
his career indicates that he was committed to Negro equality at the inception
of his career and was on the far left of contemporary American thought about
the Negro and slavery issues."

The author indicates that being opposed to slavery was a radical and despicable
idea. If you don't believe me read the next line:

"Americans are prone to read or hear the House Divided Speech with a tingling
of the spine, impressed by its dramatic tone. Set in the context of developing
regional antagonism, however, the speech seems to be that of an irresponsible
demagogue. The Union had existed half slave and half free from its inception.
There appears to be no logical reason why it could not have continued to have
existed in that fashion."

WOW! I can't believe anyone would put that in writing. Lincoln should not
have opposed the South's use of slaves? Is that really the message of this
article? The author suggests that he could have just left it alone. The south
gets slaves and the north doesn't - we can all be one big happy family.

AND here is a very interesting take on Lincoln. He was a crazy liberal who did
too much to move the country to the LEFT.

"He properly ought to be considered as a major liberal force, as someone who
moved the country toward the left and toward the situation which exists today."

THEN, the author criticizes Lincoln because he WON THE CIVIL WAR.

"He successfully defeated the South. The labors of the South for its freedom
were all in vain. Seventy-five percent of the white male population of military
age served in the Southern armies but could not overcome the disparity in
numbers of the North's mercenaries."

If you still don't believe that this author is a NUT JOB, read the next quote:
Remember, he is critical of Lincoln and these are the reasons why Lincoln is a
terrible president and terrible leader.

"The cherished dream of Southern independence was not to be."

The CHERISHED Dream of the SOUTH? What dream is that ? The dream to keep
slaves? The dream to be an independent country without the North.

Rather than convincing me that Lincoln was a bad president, this article has
convinced me that Lincoln must have had guts of steel. If it were me and
people like this guy wanted to form another country, I might have said - okay -
I probably would have shown him the door and paid his way.

I think this is the opposite of how most critics of Lincoln view him. That he
was too far right. He was too autocratic and took too much power and took the
country to the RIGHT not the left. His suspension of the writ of habeas corpus
during the war is not a LIBERAL thing to do.

I can understand some criticisms of Lincoln. But, this article ought to have a
link to the KKK recruitment chapter.

Bad hall effect pickup, maybe. The bouncing needle, actually, is
probably a bad bushing -- I'm going to have to send my speedo off for

Re: [MBZ] W124 uneven heat on acceleration

2008-02-28 Thread Peter Frederick
Yup. Take it off and blow through it in normal flow direction. It
should flop wide open, then close completely when you quit. Mine
barely leaked past. Battery voltage applied should lock it closed.

However, low flow at idle can still be a bad aux pump -- verify that
you get power when the key is switched on (and check the temp sensor
fan beside the glove box, too -- it's on the same feed). No power,
the pushbutton unit won't turn it on as it supplies the ground. You
can verify that it's working by the vibration of the rotation by
setting the temp wheel to the hot click and push the defrost button
-- so long as the engine temp is above 40C, the pump should be on.
You can check the Pushbutton unit by unplugging the pump and checking
that there is battery voltage across the power pins to the pump under
the same conditions.

Mine works much better now, still rather cool at idle, but no great
rush of heat and I don't freeze sitting at stop lights. Not sure
about the aux pump, I'll be checking that out next week as I'm taking
a week's vacation to start the spring stuff and the weather should be
decent. I also had a bad connection to the engine temp sensor that I
re-soldered, but have not verified yet.

When was the last time you read it?
There were two main points to it.
1) I hereby declare all slaves to be free in all lands not under my control.
2) If you wish to put those lands under my control by 1-1-1863, you can keep
your slaves.

I realize that by the time you were eight years old you were expected to
be able to parrot "Washington was the father of our country...Lincoln
freed the slaves", but it wasn't quite that simple. Mary Todd Lincoln
was definitely an abolitionist, as were many of Abe's associates, but
while he was quite a leftist for his time, slavery did not seem to be
a huge driving force in Abe's life.

Yessum boss I cleaned dem rings good.
I am not ruling out voltage problems, at the moment the ABS light is off
for the first 5k's or so and then comes on. Perhaps the OVP is having
issues, I tried to pull it apart for a resolder but could not figure out
how. I have seen pictures of them pulled apart. From my understanding if
a sensor is bad then the light will come on after a few meter once speed

Is it possible/advisable to flush the diff with something like ATF or am

Re: [MBZ] OT: Our Political System

2008-02-28 Thread Tom Hargrave
The Civil War was about taxation without representation.

Also, the North and the South had slaves during the Civil War.

Slavery came into general disuse in the North, not because of human rights,
but because the North had become more industrialized and slavery no longer
fit.

The South still used slavery because the South was mostly agricultural and
they needed low cost labor to plant & pick the fields.

Slavery was abolished after the war but this was not necessarily a good
thing for Black Americans in the late 18th century. The South still needed
cheap labor to plant & pick the fields and Share Cropping was invented to
replaced slavery. This was essentially a new form of slavery since the share
croppers were tied to the owner's land and the owners crops. But there was
one key difference. Instead of being fed & housed by the plantation Owner,
the share cropper was responsible for his own destiny. This may seem like a
positive turn of events but you need to remember that the owner fixed the
price that was paid to the share cropper & it was rarely enough money to
survive on through the year. The result was an even poorer Black American
population than before.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

They get their panels from the same Sharp factory, and just yesterday
was an announcement that all 3 are investing a $bil or 2 to build
another panel factory for >40" screens. The "quality" difference among
them is most likely due to video signal processing differences among the
various manufacturers.

Gang,

The centre console on my 280SEL (with column shifter) has a fifth switch. It
looks exactly like the single rocker switch in the rear door. The extra
switch is located between the two rows of double window switches. The car
doesn't have a sunroof, and in any case I believe sunroof switches were
normally on the dash. Could this be the antenna height switch (the car has
an electric antenna, but I doubt it is the original because it isn't a
Hirschmann) or is there some other option that I don't even know I have!?

Re: [MBZ] Damage limits (was Re: Inertia reel seatbelts)

2008-02-28 Thread R A Bennell
My recollection is that there were cases from the SCC that gave multimillion
dollar settlements based upon the cost
of caring for severely injured folks for the rest of their lives. The, then
dollar amounts were about 1 to 3
million if I recall which was sufficient to cause many of us to increase our
liability coverage. Now that we have
no fault insurance I suspect it would be a waste to insure for any great amount
if one does not take the vehicle
out of the province. Given that I occasionally run into the USA with the
vehicles, it seems prudent to maintain
coverage beyond the minimum just in case.

In the 70s, three Supreme Court of Canada decisions effectively fixed the
maximum "pain and suffering" damage
recovery to $100,000. That figure is indexed to inflation, so today you'd be
limited to about $300k. One of the
rationale for fixing the amount at the time was that awards in the US were
becoming outrageous, and the court
wanted to avoid the "social burden" that the threat of such large awards would
cause.

Having recently moved to the US from Canada, I can tell you that people here
seem obsessed with protecting
themselves from liability in a way that is completely unlike anything I
experienced in Canada. I can only conclude
that potentially large damage awards are an incentive to sue, which in turn
requires everyone to obsess about
liability, insurance, product labelling, etc.

We have a number of breeding pairs of eagle near me. I applaud the
occasional missing cat or yap dog. Not so happy with the huge eagle
dropping on the roof of the car.

A chicken will need the same care one of the small pets would, but
are smarter about looking out for danger than dogs or cats. That is
why they are chicken.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Chickens

I have found that if the dog will kill a child, it would kill a
chicken, so you acclimate them much the same way. Have the dog
exposed to the chickens as they grow and it may decide that they are
part of his pack as well as chickens figuring the dog is a really
ugly rooster. If the dog is a breed meant to shepherd it will do
that, if bred to attack, will do that.

Now Jim, that is a fine example of the welfare state effect on
citizens. All cooped up and no need to think, they just go on
looking for the hand out, dropping dead once things change.

Actually Wilcox is a great operation and nothing like the tyson or
purdue farms. I understand there are major changes coming for wilcox
and the relationship with costco. I think I read in the paper where
it was getting broken up.

My hens have to fend for themselves and find ample fodder and water
around the yard so that occasional oversight in keeping the feeder
and watering stations full are not huge issues. Same theory one
would give to one of those little yap dogs or a cat.

Re: [MBZ] ATF Level Question

2008-02-28 Thread R A Bennell
Sort of depends on what you are using the vehicle for etc. I have had a number
of each and I guess for the most
part if I have to choose I would go with an automatic. I wouldn't mind if my
115 300D was a manual but I am happy
that my 02 Supercrew is not. Truck transmissions are generally not as much fun
as car manual transmissions. We have
the 98 F150 with a manual 5 speed and although it is alright, it is a bit of a
pain in traffic. It is only a 4.2
V6 - the manual did not come with a V8 - and it is easy to bog it in 2nd and
the step down to low is too far to
work smoothly.

Our old 4Runner, on the other hand will go way down in higher gears without
bogging - a real flat torque curve I
guess. It, for a truck, is a more drivable manual transmission. It is, however,
a dog in the first couple of gears.
Seems fine once moving but slow on takeoff. I have not driven the 2nd gen
Runner with an AT but I am told it is
even more of a dog.

Personal preferences always, but the AT is easy and the older I get, the more I
like things that are easy.

Thanks Jim, and others. Great info. I'll study it a few times to try to
remember it all and learn from it.
I did, however, think there might be a sort of standard knowledge of how
much the difference between the dipstick reading in a warm, running engine
and a cold, non-running engine is.

I see how things can get a whole lot more complicated, though, after reading
the response.

I agree totally with whomever exclaimed that they hate ATs. I hate the
stuffing out of them to!!!

Well, with one exception: The 727 Torqueflite behind my big block Chrysler.
That model is known as "bulletproof". Never had a problem with one, and I
can say that as a foolish youth I have accidentally shifted to reverse at
maybe 30 mph. (not that I wouldn't make that mistake today). And I have seen
many "neutral drop" from other idiots (most too young to drive).

[MBZ] Damage limits (was Re: Inertia reel seatbelts)

2008-02-28 Thread David Bruckmann
In the 70s, three Supreme Court of Canada decisions effectively fixed the
maximum "pain and suffering" damage recovery to $100,000. That figure is
indexed to inflation, so today you'd be limited to about $300k. One of the
rationale for fixing the amount at the time was that awards in the US were
becoming outrageous, and the court wanted to avoid the "social burden" that the
threat of such large awards would cause.

Having recently moved to the US from Canada, I can tell you that people here
seem obsessed with protecting themselves from liability in a way that is
completely unlike anything I experienced in Canada. I can only conclude that
potentially large damage awards are an incentive to sue, which in turn requires
everyone to obsess about liability, insurance, product labelling, etc.

I've owned and loved dogs for 50+ years.

Had one in our neighborhood that chased cars and bikes.

Did minor scraps to one of the kids.

Kids Dad put a rag under his hubcap and drove by.

Dog grapped the rag, wrong his neck, problem dog was "Fixed"

Very humane in my Yankee opinion.

Re: [MBZ] ATF Level Question

2008-02-28 Thread Zoltan Finks

And I have seen
many "neutral drop" from other idiots (most too young to drive).

i live in a suburban area about 25 miles east of atlanta. most people own
at least one dog. about 20% let the dogs run free. this initially alarmed
me, but i soon discovered that everyone (including animal control) just
accepts it so i only do anything now if a dog is proven to be vicious. I
think it's kind of crazy, but more country minded persons don't get how
anyone could be against it.

the worst i have to deal with now is a white pit mix who loves people but is
a tad dog aggressive.

[MBZ] OT Cars! And loose dogs who chase them

2008-02-28 Thread Zoltan Finks
Reminds me of this Border Collie on my commute back home from school last
year. As any good Border would do, it not only crouched and gave "the
stare", it laid down and actually had its chin on the ground as it stalked
the approaching cars. The most scary thing is that its nose was right at the
pavement's edge (with no paved shoulder).

It used to really irritate me actually, as I didn't want the damage to my
car or the trauma of nailing a dog in the road, then having to decide
whether to go back and attempt to rescue it as it flailed and suffered, and
to try to contact the dog's owners and face their wrath and hysteria and
sorrow.

On the other hand, maybe as farmers they would take the news in much more
stoic fashion and chalk it up to a dog that was no good 'cause it got ran
over and couldn't stay out of the way of cars. At any rate, I really wanted
to ask them to contain their dog. In fact I tried to call the local sheriff
dept. but couldn't find the number.

As for dogs and bicycles: That irritates me even more. I know a woman from
our cycling group that had to be airlifted to the hospital because of a dog
that chased her and made her crash. She is not ever going to be the same. I
feel so badly for her. But as far as I know, she did not seek to call the
dog's owners to responsibility for this.

I'm a dog lover, but I really am not as enchanted at the idea of dogs
running loose as a lot of people are.

I'm sure there are, but they're probably around $100. You can also get
a TV tuner for about $50, and then you can record TV shows to the
computer. Also, you can take the route my brother did... he bought a
26" 720p TV that has a VGA input. Resolution is something like
1370x800. He can do PiP with the monitor & TV running at the same time.
If going that route, I'd get a 1080p TV... much better resolution.

From that thread a while back, I'm presuming that a tranny would cost
about $1700-1800 from Rusty (from that long warranty question thread).
And for $3600 it starts approaching the point of not good enough of a
deal to justify having 4 MBs.

There's a $500 '80 SD in Atlanta I'm trying to get also. Someone was in
line before me though... hopefully they haven't bought it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: LCD Displays

Pretty common when an LCD is run at a non-native resolution.
For instance my 17" Samsung is rated for max 1280x1024, crank it down to
1024x768 and it gets blurry.
Crank it down again (I can't remember, not to 800x600 but something just above)
and its a native resolution and its sharp again...

19" will have the same resolution as a 17" (usually) so 1280x1024. IIRC the
change is at 22" where you get 1600x1280.

Oops, I just checked and the Samsung 20" gets more resolution than the 17", I
was saving up for a 22-23" but maybe will go with the 20...

Hi, All.
My last CRT display died and me and the boss went looking for a new
display. Tried Staples, as we were going there for something else,
and Joanne's comment was that the LCDs on display seemed to be out of
focus. They are not as sharp as my old Dell C610, looked like less
depth of field. Does anyone have any valid suggestions for a decent
quality 19/20" wide-screen LCD? This range will fit our slim budget.

Have you checked on prices to replace the transmission?

What is the Rusty price for a transmission for this car. If you could get them

You should be able to get a good 19/20" for less than $200. One of the
things about clarity is that if an LCD is not run at the resolution it
was designed for, it will look very blurry. Not sure if that was the
case on the ones you were looking at, but it might just be the case.

That is exactly what happened to my 82 300D. You won't notice it running badly
because, of course, a little transmission fluid isn't going to hurt a diesel. I
replaced the vacuum modulator (because the shifts were way too hard and I

Samsung 1920x1200 resolution, they come in various sizes, and make sure
your video card can drive it to that resolution. Also look at contrast
ratio -- the cheap ones are like 1000:1, the Samsungs are 3000:1. That
makes a big difference. A good TV LCD is now up over 10k:1, maybe higher.
