Re: [MBZ] Speeding ticket in a 240D??!!

2013-02-15 Thread Dan Penoff
My youngest son just sort of beat his last speeding ticket (his third in as
many years!)

He got two continuances, hoping the LEO who wrote the ticket wouldn't appear,
but he did.

He got it knocked down to 6 mph over the limit because he showed that he had
recently had his speedo worked on, which he had. The officer used his cruiser's
speedo to "clock" him, so he argued that the manufacturer's tolerances were a
certain percentage of the stated value, and backed it up with data from Ford
(it was a Crown Vic.)

He said the cop was pissed as heck.

Not sure what's wrong with it. I need to pull the cluster and troubleshoot. I
suspect the cable is broken as both the odo and speedo stopped working
suddenly. Thanks for the offer on the speedometer! I'll check to see if its not
just a cable and let you know.
I'll be in Maine on Monday but the snowmobiling sounds like fun:)

Rats, you're right.

Its spendy stuff, last I checked it was $9/qt but that was when 15w50 was
$6/qt...

I used M1 5w40 in my motorcycles (both asian bikes) with excellent results.
Loads of people told me I'd have troubles with clutch slippage but I haven't
seen that. I guess if you use the "energy conserving" oil that can happen but
that badge isn't on the 5w40.

I never noticed any difference in max speed between my '78 240D and the '83

Good point. There's probably 5mph or so difference between a 1980 or newer big
cam 240D and an earlier model. Probably a few mph difference between auto and
manual trans too.

Your honor, The officer admits his radar was not functioning properly, so he
simply guessed at my speed. The ticket should be dismissed for lack of
competent
evidence. The top speed of my car is 78-80mph, and it takes considerable effort
to achieve that. You'd have to be really trying to go over 75mph. I wasn't
trying that day.

Yeah - but a 240d isn't limited by the governor in 4th gear.
It's limited by the available power and air resistance.

With 175/82 tires (I think that's about what a 175SR14 is), a
3.69 differential ratio, and 1:1 top gear - 5250 RPM equals 97
MPH [156 km/h]. I think that's the "shortest" differential and
a rather small tire. Nitske lists 86 MPH [138 km/h] as the top
speed for the early car which would be about 4350 RPM. The
post-'79 is listed with a top speed of 89 MPH [143 km/h] which
is about 4500 RPM.

[MBZ] ODBII & MB Diagnostic Connector

Just for grins I ordered an adapter that allows the connection of an ODBII

Try OBDII

Why would you expect to see anything with an OBD reader if the car is
not putting out anything an OBD reader could understand? (Not being a
smartass, just seems like the basic question)

Is there an adapter that might go to USB and something running on a
laptop that could understand whatever the car is talking?

I built some little circuit thing to see the ALDL output from my 87
Chebbie truck on a laptop, and ran some software some guy in Sweden or
somewhere wrote, it actually was kinda cool to see the various
parameters but ultimately worthless for adjusting anything on the truck.

I have seen the LED readers that you can build to read the DTC codes from the
connector, but haven't had a chance to try one.

There is a possibility that my car has an ODBII connector, as MB was
transitioning to this during the 95 model year to be in full compliance by MY

Never looked for a connector since I thought the car was too old to have one.
I'll be checking for it this weekend.

Re: [MBZ] Speeding ticket in a 240D??!!

2013-02-15 Thread Dieselhead
My youngest son just sort of beat his last speeding ticket (his
third in as many years!)

He got two continuances, hoping the LEO who wrote the ticket
wouldn't appear, but he did.

He got it knocked down to 6 mph over the limit because he showed
that he had recently had his speedo worked on, which he had. The
officer used his cruiser's speedo to "clock" him, so he argued that
the manufacturer's tolerances were a certain percentage of the
stated value, and backed it up with data from Ford (it was a Crown
Vic.)

He said the cop was pissed as heck.

Dan

You've gotta be careful about them (POd lEO). They often start
hunting the kid to "get even" With the current attitude/training
where they believe everyone they stop is a terrorist, it is pretty
easy for them to make claims with little or no substantiation. Then
they can escalate the "incident" May be a good time to put him in a
different car.

He is in a different car and he got a ride from the girlfriend to his court
appearance.

We already went over this prior to his court date. I also had my lawyer buddy
give him a quick overview of what is and isn't legal in a Terry stop. You can
never be too carful these days...

[MBZ] Road Trip

2013-02-15 Thread Craig
In preparing last weekend for our trip to the greater Phoenix area this
week, I noticed that I last changed oil on our '95 E320 7500 miles and
more than a year ago (a problem when you have extended oil changes and
don't drive too much). With some help from a neighbor and his son, we
used the Topsider and changed the oil (Mobil1 0W-40) and filter and
rotated the tires LF -> LR, LR -> RF, RF -> RR, RR -> LF.

So, 1224 miles, two doctor's appointments, and a couple of MRIs later, we
are back home. We left about 1030 on Monday morning, made it to Holbrook,
AZ, after the snowstorm had blown through and the roads to that point were
clear. We then abandoned I-40 and took side roads through Heber-Overgaard
and Payson into Chandler, AZ, arriving at 2100. Some of the side roads,
like 260, were snow-packed, but the Nokian WRG2s handled things just
fine. On the way back yesterday, we took I-17 north out of Phoenix, had
lunch in Flagstaff, and drove I-40 east to Albuquerque. North on I-25 to
Santa Fe and 84/285 and NM 502 brought us back to Los Alamos last night
shortly after 2100.

The car performed just fine. 75 mph on the Interstates was enjoyable and,
except for all of the semis on I-40, stressless. Despite this car's
cruise control's setting idiosyncracies, having the cruise control was a
big help. I noticed in Phoenix that the upshift delay started working, but
didn't take time to try to clear the Check Engine Light.

The neurosurgeon there said I have severe compression of my spinal cord
and said he wanted me in a cervical collar immediately in case I fall or
am in an automobile accident before the surgery. His staff is arranging
the surgery, which will be in 3 - 6 weeks.

people told me I'd have troubles with clutch slippage but I haven't seen that. I guess if
you use the "energy conserving" oil that can happen but that badge isn't on the
5w40.

Back in the 1980s I tried 15w50 in my CB200 when it became available. (M1 was
initially 5w30)

Couldn't break the clutch loose by rolling on the throttle, but if I launched it
hard or shifted fast, the clutch could not pull the engine (all 16hp of it) down
to match road speed. Dumping the clutch at a standing start would just let the
engine rev until the bike caught up to the engine's speed.

After my next oil change, it went back to normal behavior, in which dumping the
clutch from standstill would result in wheelspin and a little wheelie, and
shifting under power would result in the bike lunging forward instead of clutch
slipping.

I suppose it all depends on how strong the clutch is in relation to the engine,
but 1980s Mobil One definitely reduced the friction in a wet clutch as compared
to dino oils of the time.

Re: [MBZ] Speeding ticket in a 240D??!!

2013-02-15 Thread G Mann
Twice now, I've been stopped for speed with my GPS stuck to the winshield.
When the officer did his little "discussion" I just pointed to the GPS and
stated... According to my GPS here on the dash in clear view of me while
driving I was doing exactly XXX Mph. I'm sure I can call up that
information when I go to court on this, are you sure you have accurate
information? This GPS takes measurement accurate to 30 inches when
calculating speed.. It helps that I also have a dual dash camera to
point to, one shoots to the front one shoots to the rear and records to a
12V 40 gig hard drive.
So I can call up the exact location and the officer stop along with the GPS
data.

In both cases, we chatted a bit... officer ask why I had "all this
equipment" and I replied.. you have it in your car don't you? There are a
lot of unsafe drivers on the road and my insurance likes that I can replay
any accident I might have for them.

Seems to take a lot of the "sting" out of their "sting" no ticket in
either case.

Grant...
Total cost for camera setup was less than one ticket

My beef with the subject is that they offer limited assistance (new
battery, change tire, gallon of fuel) or a tow, but the tow is to the
dealership. Won't tow to your house, or shop of choice, only the
 dealership.

My insurance company offers towing and the first ten or twenty miles are
covered, tow to any location (my house, favorite shop, friends place,
wherever). I've used it several times, usually have the car towed home so
 I
 can fix at my leisure.

Re: [MBZ] Oil (Dino)

2013-02-15 Thread Dan Penoff
There were all sorts of anecdotal stories about synthetics and the havoc they
wreaked on clutches in the Virago forum I belonged to. Mobil1 also made a lot
of statements and disclaimers regarding the reason for the different type of
oil for air cooled engines/bikes, and how the additives they had in the V
series oil were critical to proper clutch operation.

I used to buy it by the case (six bottles) from a place in Miami that sold all
sorts of unusual lubricants. They would have it on special twice a year for
$50/case shipped. Last time I looked at it here at a FLAPS it was over
$10/quart.

Hafta keep walker nearby. Yeah, I know, somebody's gonna say, "Why didn't

Subject: [MBZ] Road Trip

Well, it is a car list, after all! :-)

BTW, we used 44.803 gallons of gasoline to cover the 1224 miles; that's
an overall fuel economy of 27.32 mpg. On the segment from Grants, NM, to
Los Alamos, we used 6.499 gallons to cover 183 miles for 28.16 mpg.

Re: [MBZ] Oil (Dino)

2013-02-15 Thread Curt Raymond
I started my experimenting with my wife's '89 Kawi LTD 454. Although the engine
is small at 32hp its no slouch and will break the rear tire free pretty much
anytime you want. I can detect no appreciable clutch slip.

With that success I tried it in my '82 Honda CB900F, thats a 90something HP
bike IIRC and will gladly sit still and spin the rear tire to shreds all day
long if you let it. Mobil 1 didn't change that.
It did change the cold start characteristics (which was mostly what I was
after) in that the bike got slightly easier to start when cold. Its still a
bastard if its been sitting any amount of time, just slightly less so.

Back in the 1980s I tried 15w50 in my CB200 when it became available. (M1 was
initially 5w30)

Couldn't break the clutch loose by rolling on the throttle, but if I launched
it
hard or shifted fast, the clutch could not pull the engine (all 16hp of it)
down
to match road speed.

Mitch.

[MBZ] Sick Garmin Nüvi 750

2013-02-15 Thread Craig
During our trip, I had programmed our Garmin GPS receiver with the
location of my uncle's house. We were on the way there when the receiver
locked up. I found that if I restarted it, it would run for about 30
seconds and then lock up again. I was able to get it to tell me, "Go on
such-an-such to that street." I went to that street, restarted it, and it
told me, "Turn left and go X miles to such-and-such street." Doing that
over and over, I was able to get to my destination. Unfortunately, this
process is real pain, and 30 seconds is not enough time to program a new
destination.

When it's connected to the window mount and powered from the car, it
locks up with the screen lit up. When it's running on its own battery, it
shuts down.

Any hints on fixing this?

Thanks,

Craig

You ask... so here it is. There are others with slightly different

Or what I have, which is an earlier version of this.

http://www.zetronix.com/720p-HD-Ultra-Wide-Angle-Nightvision-Car/Truck-DVR-Dash-Camera%28203%29/product_info.html

In both cases, you are less than $300 plus shipping. Auto key on feature is
great. You will never forget to record. It gives you about 18 hrs of record
time then re-records over the old stuff.. The new one above has GPS linked
directly into the data stream, If I replace what I have, it would be my
choice.

A word of caution. This device could also be used as information against
you so guard it carefully. Your 5th amendment right not to engage in self

preserve it. Just a word to the wise. As my law firm "Dewy, Cheatem, &

Re: [MBZ] Speeding ticket in a 240D??!!

2013-02-15 Thread WILTON
Maybe 20 years ago, my 80 240D speedo cable broke; no noise; no erratic
speedo - just suddenly quit. Coupla years before that, though, odometer
quit, and I had removed the unit and sent it to "well-known and
well-recommended repairer" (can't remember who/where), but, anyway, on that
New Year's night (not eve but Jan 1), SWMBO and I drove the 240D to her
brother's house for dinner, etc., near the small eastern NC town where she
and I grew up. At about 11 PM or so, we were headed home about an hour
away. 'Cruised down main street and saw local gendarme sitting at usual
spot. (Remember, speedo was not installed, but I was familiar enough with
sound of car in each gear to know that I was not speeding.) 'Cruised on up
main street to red light just before right turn to head on out of town.
While sitting at red light, gendarme eased up behind me; right turn signal
ON, turned right and easing on out of town at about 32 to 34 mph in 35 zone,
crossed railroad and eased into long, sweeping slight curve to left; very
aware of double yellow center line and eased to left NEAR the line, but very
aware that I never touched it.  Gendarme close behind me the whole time;
just as I was about to accelerate to 45 mph as I passed 45 zone sign, blue
lights flashed behind. I said, "What the Hell is this? I haven't done
anything." As gendarme approached car, I eased out of driver seat and stood
facing him with very non-threatening air and stance and asked in pleasant
voice, "Good evening, officer, what's the problem?" He replied, "Well, I
stopped you because you crossed the double yellow line back there in that
curve?" Surprised, I said in high voice with puzzled face and being careful
not to appear angry, etc., "What?" But I did not protest, and certainly was
not going to argue - my attitude and response to gendarmes has always been
to try to use only the following authorized statements: "Yes, Sir; No, Sir
and No excuse, Sir." He went on to ask for driver's license, registration,
etc.; while pulling out my wallet, I asked SWMBO to get registration out of
glove box, etc.; as I pulled my license out of my pocket; I dropped it in
the grass; made a swift movement straight down bending my knees and keeping
back straight, retrieved the license with no hesitation, no wobbling, etc. -
just a very stable, swift and fluid movement down and up. As I handed him
the license and reg., he asked, "Had anything to drink tonight?" I replied
firmly and confidently, "Yes, Sir, my sister-in-law's sweet ice tea, as
usual." He responded, "No alcoholic beverages?" My reply, "Absolutely not!
Never!" He quickly realized that I knew what the Hell I was talking about,
and handed my license and reg back saying, "Well, have a nice evening, Mr.
Strickland." As I was getting in car, I said, "I thank you for doing your
duty, but you know, it is a bit annoying and is a pity to know that we can't
drive anywhere late at night this time of year without being suspected of
drinking." He replied, "Yes, you're right. Have a nice evening." As I
closed the door, my final comment, "Thank, you, Sir."

Frankly, It was a bit more than annoying.

Ya may wonder why I got out of the car - I was trying to keep 'im from
seeing the blank space in the instrument cluster. 'Could've been a
defective equipment ticket.

Theres really only 3 or 4 things that could go wrong. The cable breaking
seems like it should have made some noise first. I wonder if it just fell
off the back of the speedo? That'd be a nice easy fix.

Not sure what's wrong with it. I need to pull the cluster and
troubleshoot. I suspect the cable is broken as both the odo and speedo
stopped working suddenly. Thanks for the offer on the speedometer! I'll
check to see if its not just a cable and let you know.

I'll be in Maine on Monday but the snowmobiling sounds like fun:)

Actually I've got another unknown (probably working) one too (which would
keep me from having to break up a known good cluster) that Andrew sold me
some years ago. Anyway either (or both) are yours for the asking if
needed. We're supposed to have snow this weekend but you could come out
Monday for snowmobiling (I'll actually be in Leominster but thats east of

Thanks, Jon, for the hint. I searched for reset Garmin Nuvi and got
several hits, some wrong, some right.

http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-reset-garmin-nuvi-gps-device-access-maintenance-mode/
says,

Turn off Garmin device. Press down on bottom right corner of the
touchscreen, and then power on the GPS unit. You should be prompted
whether do you really want to erase all user data, or asked if do
you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press “Yes” to
reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost, so backup before
  proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.

Trick above works on Garmin nuvi 200, 250, 360 750, 760 series unit.
In fact, there is a video demo by user of Garmin Nuvi 360 on how to
  perform the hidden reset function.

I did the erasing of user data (it did not ask about maintenance mode)
and it runs properly now.

Thanks!

I have way too many cameras, can't decide whether to sell or keep the
Nikons, Leicas and the Linhof - they do have sentimental value (fed our
family for 20 years or so). I also have a stock of B&W 120 rolls, some 8x10
sheet film, and 100' rolls of 35mm in the freezer. The way-out-of-date 8x10
Polaroid works more like cyanotype now - the blue layer is about all that's
left.

Does he develop rolls of B&C or color neg/pos?

2013-02-15 Thread Rich Thomas
Hey, have you ever been to Las Vegas, NM? We got sorta stuck there one
night when big snow was forecast, we were driving from Houston to CO,
along about 10PM and the radio was forecasting doom and dire conditions
so we figured it was time to find a refugio, wifey got on the wireless
and rang up a hotel. 2 kids, 2 dogs in the old hotel there, which is
very cool. Turned out the storm was a bust so next morning on we went.
My cousin told me he had stayed there too, was doing some sort of
architectural project in LV.

Was watching the movie No Country for Old Men a year or two later and
damn that hotel lobby looked familiar...

Re: [MBZ] Speeding ticket in a 240D??!!

2013-02-15 Thread clay monroe
Maybe the 616 has more goodness than the 615 in Gump. 84.5mph in Gump was
invigorating, but not to be done for more than a short bit. Maybe a mile, then
drop down to reasonable speeds.

As I said, use of the fleece filter is part of the long interval change. I
also don't like 10K changes.

I'd always thought there had to be a limiter because you can feel it
just sort of stop accelerating.

That's where the rising wind-resistance HP curve meets the falling
RPM-dropoff HP curve of the diesel.
