Maybe Big Diomede Island in the Bering Strait. Nikolskoye Kamchatka Krai
and the small island to its southeast are too far from Attu Island to be
seen.

It was Tina Fey, a comedian on Saturday Night Live, when portraying 
Palin (and they look remarkable similar) said, "I can see Russia"  
Unfortunately those who do not like Palin erroneously attribute this 
quote to her to make her appear stupid.  (There might be other evidence 
for that, but not this particular meme)


The Bridge to Nowhere was the work of the Senator Stevens from AL who 
got indicted on corruption and such, got defeated, then it was dismissed 
for prosecutorial misconduct, then he died in a plane crash.  Palin was 
apparently for it before she was against it, but it did not get built.

together last year, or at least by Feb. to begin house hunting.  She began late 
May, and closed on what was available 28 days before the move.  Not the place 
she wanted or the list of needs and wants.  Too far from school and work, but 
not so far it hurts.

Purchased the car ten days before she leaves town, and has yet to take 
possession.  Still has her old car that needs detail and get sold.That is a 
long shot, since she is out of town this week.

She decided to begin looking for furniture for the new house in late June.  No 
sense of style, or visualization ability.  There is a six to ten week lead time 
for the product to show up.  The movers came to give a quote for taking her 
stuff up.  No paperwork yet, but it looks like the earliest it will get there 
is late October.  

She wants an adventure, so is driving.  I know she is bat shit crazy, so I am

Still in the 3s I think. We refi'd last year to 4.125% down from 7.3% which 
we'd accepted because we got a 100% mortgage. The 4.125% is a little higher 
than we could have gotten except that we were over on the mortgage to the tune 
of $60,000. Thats closed to maybe $40,000 now and shrinking since our new 
mortgage (25 year vs 30 before) pays principle much faster and our value is 
increasing rapidly.

Whoops!

Ran it one more time adding in a $7000 downpayment (which doesn't include my 
Ranger for trade) and got a different answer, now the interest at 2.9% is down 
to $1226.18 in interest.
Actually at this point the payments are down to the point I can start to thing 
about a 48 month loan where Ford will give me 1.9% and the total interest is 
only $638.18.

Of course Friday these deals go away... I've got some time Thursday, probably 
ought to go see if I can find a salesman with a real sharp pencil.

I found an online calculator that says if I finance $25,000 at 5.8% the 
interest paid in the first 3 car payments is $357.27
If I then refi at 2.72% which Bankrate says was last week's average my total 
interest would be $1766.80 for a grand total interest paid of $2124.07

If I got 0.9% on the same $25,000 the total interest paid is $576.09.
$2124.07 minus $576.09 is $1547.98 so if I'm giving up the better interest rate 
for cash back I'm actually LOSING $47.98 plus I have to fart around with 
refinancing so it'd be better to stick with the 0.9% in the first place.

Worse yet (for the dealer I went to Sunday anyway) when I Google I find Ford's 
incentives page, they'll give me 0.0% for 60 months with $750 trade in 
assistance or $1,000 and 2.9% on 60 months AND $750 trade assistance.
Even with that I'm paying $1745.38 in interest that I wouldn't pay at the 0.0% 
rate right? So unless Ford gives me more than $1745.38 in incentives I'm better 
off taking the 0.0% interest.

The "buy it new and run it into the ground" can make sense if you're carrying 
the paper for 0% or paying cash.  That's about the only way you can amortize 
the depreciation and break even or possibly come out ahead in my book.

The wife's 2005 Mazda 6s will be ten years old next year.  It's got 133k on it 
and is still worth about $5k as a private party sale.  We paid around $22k for 
it in 2005 and carried the paper for four years at something stupidly low, like 
1%.

Repairs over its life have been around $2600 so far, not including maintenance. 
 I'm thinking we've gotten our money's worth out of the car.  Next year it's 
either a new car for her at 0% or a late model used car.  it will all depend on 
the bank rates at the time.

You're probably even better off when you consider the resale of a Ford truck.  
You've seen what the used ones bring, so you already know it will hold its 
value for a long, long time.

Have you considered the "Internet blast" approach?  Pick out a number of 
dealers in the area online, give them the specs on the truck you want, and let 
them give you a quote.  They're a lot more aggressive this way, as they know 
you're not screwing around.  You want to be sure they know you're shopping 
everyone and that they get one and only one shot.  You alos don't have to mess 
with the game playing that way, too.

One reason I hold onto my rides.  I can not see buying a newer model with lower 
build quality, when I can use a fraction of the cash to keep what I have on the 
road.

The yoda guys took the car on trade, so it was pretty much 2/3 the sale price 
to acquire.  The infiniti, acura, and bmw shops had paid wholesale and spruced 
the cars up.  No wiggle room and they farmed out the repairs/updates.  The CPO 
will transfer to the AK dealer if need arises, where the other shops stood 
behind their cars, as long as they were on the lot.

I think the detailing costs were so high due to the flatulance embedded in the 
seats.  It comes out of leather easier than fabric

The local indy dealers are banking on sub prime loans they originate themselves 
to the wetbacks.  They can not get banks to cover the loans, so hold the paper 
themselves and have usurious rates, so everybody qualifies.  Pepe Jimenez makes 
jacked up payments on his truck, and, if he defaults, the car is repossessed 
and back on the lot or to the consignment auction.

The "buy it new and run it into the ground" can make sense if you're carrying 
the paper for 0% or paying cash.  That's about the only way you can amortize 
the depreciation and break even or possibly come out ahead in my book.

The wife's 2005 Mazda 6s will be ten years old next year.  It's got 133k on it 
and is still worth about $5k as a private party sale.  We paid around $22k for 
it in 2005 and carried the paper for four years at something stupidly low, like 
1%.

Repairs over its life have been around $2600 so far, not including maintenance. 
 I'm thinking we've gotten our money's worth out of the car.  Next year it's 
either a new car for her at 0% or a late model used car.  it will all depend on 
the bank rates at the time.

You're probably even better off when you consider the resale of a Ford truck.  
You've seen what the used ones bring, so you already know it will hold its 
value for a long, long time.

Have you considered the "Internet blast" approach?  Pick out a number of 
dealers in the area online, give them the specs on the truck you want, and let 
them give you a quote.  They're a lot more aggressive this way, as they know 
you're not screwing around.  You want to be sure they know you're shopping 
everyone and that they get one and only one shot.  You alos don't have to mess 
with the game playing that way, too.

It is Osama crap for cars that has made a mess of the business.  The old cars 
got destroyed, so used car volume crashed.  The new cars sold at that time were 
tin boxes, not cars you really wanted to hang onto.  The dealers were begging 
folks to buy, since there was almost no business to be had.  SWMBA got her 
korean car at the end of the season.  It had come up from PDX, to a lesser 
dealer here, and they were trying to push it at near new car pricing.  I think 
we got them to toss in all manner of goodies, extend the warrantee, and cut the 
price by $8.5k.  Five years of service was part of the deal, so it has only 
ever been to the dealer for care.  About the only out of pocket was fuel, a 
better battery and tires.  And wipers.

Trying to find valid pricing for the model now is crazy.   Low miles, like 
hers, are going for top blue book.  Probably best time to dump it, as it is 
still under warrantee, has all records, and the economy is getting ready to 
tick along again

Toyota seems the least likely to deal. Used sellers of Toyotas seem to think 
that every time they've farted in the seats its raised the price $1000.

I was unhappy at the Ford dealership at first, it was the old school "come in 
and lets talk about things." Where what we really wanted was to drive some 
trucks but in the end it worked out as we realized that we could probably end 
up with a better deal on a brand new truck than a used one. I think spending 
$25,000 and running it for 15 years will make more sense than spending $10,000 
every 5 years.

cars and marked up stickers.  They thought the cars were pooped out by the 
almighty himself and would not negotiate or get close to her price.  The guy at 
the toad lot got the sweetest deal by having the car be CPO, dropped closest to 
her price, and then negotiations hit a bump.  No more room they said.

aluminum body panels) that the 2014s will get scarce and they'll stop the 
incentives. That seems to not make sense to me, surely the 2014s get cheaper. 
This is my first time looking at new and I feel like I'm flailing in the dark...

There is always September.  The really new stuff will be arriving and these 
guys need to make room.They shuffle the old stuff to lesser dealers around 
the area (small town guys) or have to store it on some far off lot.  It is not 
making them cash sitting on the tarmac.

Or, you get the d'heads like my local MB dealer, who do not give a rip about 
actually serving the customers, because there are enough chinese folks rolling 
in the door for fresh silver stars.   Club member wanted to use the Costco 
buying program for his new car.  Local shop told him to pound sand, so he went 
to a dealer 100 miles away, who gladly made the sale.  All manner of incentives 
to boot.  MBCA loyalty, costco, and some other bargain he nailed down.

As they say in the car business, you are in the new car business to be in the 
used car business. In other words, there are very little margins on new cars. A 
dealer may make a few hundred on a new car. They hope to get good trades to 
make the real money on. Plus there is the service business and the finance. On 
the used cars there are most often very large margins. Most dealers are going 
to make 2-4k per copy, plus they would get another trade usually to make money 
on, plus they make money on the back in in the F&I. Maybe many many years ago 
there were large margins on new cars but that simply is not the case these days.

I read recently that what happened with sub prime mortgages in the 2000's is 
happening now with used auto loans. Sub prime loans to people who won't be able 
to pay them back, driving the used car prices through the roof.

IIRC, the V8 has more torque, which is what a truck needs. The STX is a
step up from the base - I got the base short cab, long bed, with added
electric windows and locks and running boards. I did have to order it -
there were none that met my specs in OK.

Used truck prices are stupid right now. 4 years old you're looking at $20-24k, 
for $4,000 more I can buy brand new.
Toyota is the worst, 8 years old is $16-18k. I think few people were buying new 
from say 2008 to about 2012 so there just isn't that much inventory in used 
trucks. When I bought my Dakota there were a bunch of used trucks, same when I 
bought my Ranger. Now every dealership has a few but not that many.

Yes by all means offer 22k. You'll be surprised how much negotiating power
you have. Be prepared to walk &  hang up. Hang tough. Play one dealer
against the other . I don't know the specifics of the various engines on

I just looked and our local dealer (the one we tried today was just over the 
border in NH) has nearly the same truck for $33,000. Seems like if he's got it 
for $3k less than the other guy he ought to meet my $25k price. I should ask 
$22k... I'll have to run over and try one tomorrow so when the NH guy calls I 
can tell him I drove another one (same color even) and want the better price.

I want to drive the v6 too, it gets 2mpg better and costs $1000 less. This is 
the 3.7l na, not the eco boost which adds another $1000.
They say the v6 is 302hp, the turbo adds 63hp. The 5.0 v8 is 360hp.

302hp seems like plenty. My Dakota had like 210hp with a 5.2l v8, Ranger is 
something like 205hp with a 4l v6. I drove a Chevy last year with their 4.3l v6 
and although towing a 240D I had to keep it in 3rd coming up the highway I 
think that was just a factor of too high gears for the job. It wasn't really 
working that hard.

Trip #3 to try out new trucks took us to a Mazda dealership that had a 2010 
Chevy Silverado and 2010 Ford 150. We decided we liked the Ford better but it 
was a crew cab (and $28k).

We don't need a crew cab full size so we decided to go over to the Ford dealer 
who actually persuaded us that it made more sense to look at a new truck than 
used. We drove a 2014 F150 STX access cab, which is I guess pretty much the 
base model, cloth seats, rubber floor mat, 5.0l v8. Its still pretty fancy, 
6spd auto, satellite radio, AC blows ice cold :) 4wd with electronic locking 
rear diff.

Sat down to do the numbers, they're giving a base price of $36,600 and the 
first deal came down to $30,000 which with taxes and fees is something like 
$33k. That includes $500 for our ranger plus something like $2,000 in loyalty 
money. I decided we couldn't pay that much and he came back with "Well what 
would close the deal today?" So I said $25,000. They came back with $28,000.

We left saying we still wanted to try the Dodge. I expect they'll call this 
week at least to thank us for going in but I'm wondering if they'll except my
