RE: Tapin Radio Question Again
I just updated to the latest version to make sure this works. Tab to the Search Menu button and press space. Arrow down to the Genres choice and press Enter. this lands you in a vertical list of letters and numbers which are the first letters of genre names. Arrow up or press o for oldies, then press enter on it to activate it. shift+tab to the resulting list. I get 572 or so stations from all over the globe. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Tom Kaufman Sent: Tuesday, November 14, 2017 9:08 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List'Subject: Tapin Radio Question Again Hello listers: I have the latest version of Tapin Radio; am trying to figure out how the genres menu works! RE: Question about LS-14 digital recorder
One can often find Book Port Plus or Plextalk Pocket units used in good condition. this may make their price more equal to the one you're contemplating; I don't know how much that one costs. The advantage of these blindness-specific devices is that you can easily set bookmarks while recording, so if an item you know you're going to want to put in the minutes occurs you can silently hit the bookmark key during recording and easily get back to it later. You can also of course change the playback speed. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of JOHN RIEHL Sent: Sunday, November 12, 2017 12:05 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List'Subject: RE: Question about LS-14 digital recorder Hi, Andy. Like another member suggested yesterday, most of these recorders record a file for you and that's all. What you do with that file is up to you. You may wish to make it quieter, slower, faster , louder or add some thing like a small echo or you may simply wish to maximise all the tracks to be the same volume, etc. You achieve these things by using something like Goldwave. I do this kind of stuff all the time and as recently as Friday night of last week I recorded a 45 singer choir onto such a recorder and came home with my digital recording. But then the technical work really started I had to load it into Goldwave and make some of the improvements that I listed above. I ended up with a high quality recording that you simply cannot get on a stand alone hand-held digital recorder. Once on the computer I was also able to burn my work onto a CD for the group, which is to be used in a television advertisement. I could not do this without some experience of digital editing on a computer. So if this is what you want to do, then that is the way to do it. Hope this helps. I found it by going into Winamp Preferences with Ctrl+P, then pressing P three times for Plug-ins, arrowing twice down to Output, Tabbing twice to the list of plug-ins. The first one on my list is NullSoft Direct Sound Output. Tab to and activate the Configure Button. This opens a multi-page dialog with five tabs. The middle one is the Fading tab. There are many options to record audio streams. The only free one I know is Tapin Radio. You can search for it and install it. Of course, they have a paid version $20 US) which lets you schedule recordings and gives you access to a wider database of stations. Perhaps the free version of total Recorder (totalrecorder.com) allows for recording in real time. Total Recorder Pro lets you schedule recordings. The most powerful one I know is Replay Radio from applian technoloties. It carries an annual subscription cost, but lets you schedule recordings, and also has a way to detect the Url of sites whose Url isn't apparent, so that you can record it. solving windows 10 basic recording problems
I have a Lenovo tablet on which I used to be able to record using its built-in microphone, and, to some degree, a mediocre earbud mike plugged into the headphone jack. I had to wipe the machine, (or maybe I didn't have to, but I did,) then upgraded it to windows 10 anniversary. Now I can't make this work. The default recording device is the Connexant Smartaudio HD. When I go into its properties, the microphone is invariably muted and volume is at 0. I change these settings and the changes do not remain in effect. I had learned that it is unwise to have Skype control your microphone setting, but when I turn that Skype option on, I am able to use Skype. I am trying to record using the free virtual recorder program, and it works for capturing What You Hear but not the microphone. I have Goldwave, but find it doesn't work as well under windows 10 as it used to for me, likely because I haven't taken the time to re-learn it. Mainly, I would like the connexant audio Properties to remain in effect when I set them. Suggestions?

recording mixer program; scheduling and recording audio in Win10 Anniversary edition
Hello. After a computer crash, I have lost a little information and a lot of functionality. I cannot remember the name and URL for the little free program that lets you choose your sound source to record on a pc. I restored this computer to default and then upgraded to windows 10 Anniversary Edition. Since then, even running as an administrator, I cannot schedule or record with Replay Radio, or schedule with Tapin Radio Pro. I have yet to figure this out. If anybody can suggest why the same computer which used to run windows 10 has now lost these abilities in windows 10 anniversary Edition, I would love to understand it; my Google search didn't help.

RE: Goldwave question
Since we're talking about versions, I use 5.70 on a Win 7 64-bit system. John, did you **really** mean 5.07. or 5.70? 5.70 is the last version which will work for WindowsXP systems, 5.07 is a very early version of GW V5, it works with windowsXP and windowsME but not with any other windows system. also 5.07 does not have all the access facilities introduced from 5.25 onwards. If you are **really** using 5.07, this is probably why auto-scroll-lock behaves differently. Further answer to a question, the new GW scripts **only** work with systems **after** WindowsXP they are created for GW V6.anything, only a 64-bit program is now available hence the scripts are set up accordingly.

To set this, press f11 you are now in the play properties sheet. Tab past the settings for winding back and forward, you are then in an edit box which, by default, has the value 0.000, I changed this to 0.150 which means whenever I move an arrow or marker, I play fifteen hundreths of a second's worth of sound. This makes editting much much much faster but there is a definite nack to using in this way. Assuming you have set your zoom rate to something sensible, such as one second's worth of sound on the screen (shift with the number 2 on the qwerty keyboard achieves this) movement of arrow / markers will give you an easy way to place the left or right markers exactly where you need them. Now, to find where you want the edit. If you know roughly where it begins, say at 5:25 into the file, using the shift e enter the time in the start marker position press enter. Now play the file which if you have your play set will start from the start marker, when you reach the actual place, press left bracket the marker is then set. If you need to move it slightly, you can do so using shift and left-right arrow, you will hear sound as you move the arrow i.e marker. When happy, attend in much the same way for the end marker, you can play, or jump through the file until you reach the place where the edit is to end, press right bracket, i.e the second key to the right of the letter p, and then fine tune by using the control-shift and left-right arrow. I have my three play cuttons set as follows: Play1 (f2) set to play all Play 2 (f3) set to play selection Play 3 (f4) set to play view therefore, to play what is between the markers, play2 to play what is on the screen play 3, to play file from start play 1. If happy, press delete, piece gone, play 2 should give silence. Remember control z can undo either to your system maximum, or until you reach last saved file, or until you reach the amount set. I have mine set to fifteen I suspect the maximum varies but on my system it is twenty. Remember, for each undo, you are left with markers set as at execution of the function you are reversing. Hope these are of help, currently, I am still using V5.70 on a Windows7 desktop upstairs and a WindowsXp Home laptop downstairs but I have been using GoldWave for the last eight years, ever since V5.12. __ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 12281 (20150920) __ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com

RE: how to access track info using Windows Media Player 11
My suspicion is that these things are not at all easy to do in WMP, which is partly why there are so many alternative media players out there. I know that the two deficiencies mentioned in this thread are why I don't use it. Here's an old Tidbit which somebody might want to follow up on: David Bailes continues to write free VIP Accessibility Guides. His latest contribution is a guide to windows Media Player 11 for JAWS users, though its usefulness is not limited to users of JAWS. this 8,000-word guide can be had here http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Windows-Media-Player-11-Guide .html And here's another one: Content on the Listen and Learn Recordings site continues to be updated. You can download or stream the recordings, and a podcast feed is available. Recent additions include a three-part guide on using Windows Media Player, guides to installing Linux, and a tutorial on using Talks. http://www.lalrecordings.com Hope this proves useful. Hi Everyone! I'm always discovering new features and functions in the Total Recorder application and I do discover some bugs from time-to-time but the support team at High Criteria seem pretty helpful. One you need to be careful of is the problem in Total Recorder's error trapping when typing in a filename, for some reason Total Recorder won't tell you if the / character is in a filename. Now obviously, if you're typing in a filename manually then you're not likely to use the / character but if you're pasting say from a schedule on the web to the filename box into the scheduler of Total Recorder? Well, that can be a different matter as I've just found out. so what's the consequence of all this? you get an extra folder created off your directory where Total Recorder stores your files along with a possible meaningless filename which you have to try and sort out, in other words the wasting of a few minutes which you could quite easily devote to more productive pursuits. Next thing, be very careful! how you set your power management settings of your Windows PC, if the PC goes to Standby mode or the hard drive goes to sleep then I'm afraid that Total Recorder will go to sleep to, this problem is probably beyond the folks at High Criteria as its more a Windows thing I'm supposing. Audio Hijack Pro - the nearest thing to Total Recorder on the Mac - can tap into the operating system and wake or even start your computer just before the scheduled recording is to take place and I'm guessing of course that such nice and nifty things just aren't possible with Windows due to the design of the PC itself. ** Dane Trethowan From Melton Victoria Australia mailto:dane.tretho...@me.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/grtdane blog: http://www.grtdane.wordpress.com Phone United Kingdom 02032874641 Phone Australia 0390058589 Phone United States 8159261869 Fax: +61 3 9743 7954x MSN grtd...@dane-trethowan.net skype:grtdane12 ** To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 4511 (20091015) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Hello. A very good player for this is Winamp, especially if you use any fairly recent version of JAWS or Window-Eyes version 7 or later. For instance, with these screen readers running and using Winamp, before you shut down the computer, set a time marker. Now you can return to that same position very easily. Even if you don't do that, you can easily jump to any time position in the file. You can also easily turn the book into a DAISY book with a free tool, then use a DAISY reader on the computer; I can research the links for you to do that if you want. The keystrokes for setting Winamp place markers is I believe dependent on your screen reader. If using JAWS, read the help that comes with the scripts. RE: is there any player which can help to jump any specific place ina long audio or will start from the last point aftershutting down and and when restarting again?
The manual for the Daisy Book Generator explains the process. Basically, you put all the mp3 files you want to constitute the Daisy book onto a folder. Highlight that folder in Windows Explorer and use the context menu which, once you install Daisy Book Generator, will include the option to create a Daisy book, as well as other options offered by the program. Hello. A very good player for this is Winamp, especially if you use any fairly recent version of JAWS or Window-Eyes version 7 or later. For instance, with these screen readers running and using Winamp, before you shut down the computer, set a time marker. Now you can return to that same position very easily. RE: Digital recorders again.
What I know is that the PlexTalk Pocket is totally accessible, nicely packaged, has both manual and automatic level control, and does a very nice job of recording from the line injack. I doubt any other digital recorder provides as much feedback, as this one is made for the blind. Of course, it may (or may not, I don't know) cost more than others of similar quality, but there's no guesswork involved. It's nice to be able to monitor through the speaker when making a line-in recording. When you get on the site, search for the word radio. But it isn't always that easy. For instance, when you go on the Montreal Canadiens site, you have to get past all the French/English stuff before you even get to the page where you can look for the word radio. When you find it, the call letters for the station will be somewhere around there. Another option is to use Google. Look for something like, senators radio if you want to hear the Ottawa Senators. Here's a summary of the accessibility features and functions found on the new Ipod Touch as taken from the Apple Web Site. Vision iPod touch includes a screen reader and other innovative accessibility features that make it easier to use for those with impaired vision. VoiceOver The same VoiceOver screen reader made popular on the Mac and the iPhone is now a standard feature on iPod touch (3rd generation). It's the world's first gesture-based screen reader, enabling you to enjoy the fun and simplicity of iPod touch even if you can't see the screen. What makes VoiceOver on iPod touch remarkable is that you control it using simple gestures that let you physically interact with items on the screen. It's easy to learn and fun to use. Instead of memorizing hundreds of keyboard commands or endlessly pressing tiny arrow keys to find what you're looking for, with VoiceOver you simply touch the screen to hear a description of the item under your finger, then gesture with a double-tap, drag, or flick. VoiceOver delivers an experience unlike any screen reader you've used before. Traditional screen readers describe individual elements on the screen, but struggle to communicate where each element is located or provide information about adjoining objects. This contextual information is very important but typically filtered out by other screen readers. For example, off-screen models used by traditional screen readers to represent applications and web pages intentionally strip away contextual information and describe web pages as a list or menu of items. But with VoiceOver on iPod touch, you'll experience something entirely new. Because VoiceOver works with the touchscreen, you interact directly with objects on the screen and can understand their location and context. So, when you touch the upper-left corner of the screen, you'll hear what's in the upper-left corner of a web page, and as you drag your finger around the screen, you'll learn what's nearby, providing an amazing new sense of context and relationships between the items you hear. For many, VoiceOver on iPod touch will provide, perhaps for the first time, a true sense of not only how things appear on the screen, but also descriptions of what they are. You'll hear descriptions of every item, including status information such as battery level, Wi-Fi signal levels, and time of day. iPod touch even lets you know when the display changes to landscape or portrait, and when the screen is locked or unlocked. The speaking rate is adjustable so you can set it to a speed that best suits your listening ability. VoiceOver uses distinctive sound effects to alert you when an application opens, when the screen is updated, when a message dialog appears, and more. And when VoiceOver is talking, the volume of background sounds and music is automatically lowered, ducking under the voice, so you can clearly hear what VoiceOver is telling you. It Speaks Your Language VoiceOver includes built-in voices that speak over 21 languages including Bahasa Indonesian, Chinese (Cantonese), Chinese (China), Chinese (Taiwan), Dutch, English (U.S.), English (UK), English (Australian), Finnish, French (Canada), French (France), German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish (Mexico), Spanish (Spain), Swedish, Thai, and Turkish. Getting Started VoiceOver is built into iPod touch (3rd generation). There's nothing extra to purchase or install. All you need is iPod touch, iTunes 9 or later, and a Mac or PC. You can activate your iPod touch and enable VoiceOver without sighted assistance using iTunes with a compatible screen reader like VoiceOver (included in Mac OS X) or GW-Micro Window- Eyes for Windows XP and Windows Vista (sold separately). When you activate iPod touch using iTunes, you can

RE: Digitizing Tape without Hearing Sound
I suspect you are using Windows xp or earlier. Go into the properties of your sound card and choose play. In that dialog, you may find options to check or uncheck what channels play. Make sure line in is unchecked. Also, in the recording properties, make sure line in is checked, not anything called What you Hear or Mixer. I often digitize tapes using Goldwave, in both Xp and Vista, and never hear the tape playing, so the problem can be solved. RE: mp3 direct cut
I know all about Goldwave, and it does have many advantages. Actually, when working with an mp3 file, Mp3 Direct Cut has it beat for splitting and some simple editing given the fact that it works directly on the mp3 file without decompressing and re-compressing. Both programs have their uses. RE: Is this possible with Goldwave?
I would use the command line to achieve what you want. For simplicity, perhaps put the files into the root folder of drive c:, or some other easy p lace you can find. The easiest scenario would be if you wanted all the files from the book to end up in one file. So if the book is called my multifile book, with each chapter being a file with a name based on that name, Go to the run dialog and type cmd. You then have to navigate to the folder where the files are. In my example, type cd \ to get to the root of drive c:. Now type this, paying attention to punctuation: Copy /b my multifile*.* thebook/mp3 Press enter. To close the command line, type the word exit and hit enter. You should now have a file called thebook.mp3 in the root folder of your c: drive. There is doubtless another way, but here is what I would do: 1. Add the two stations. From the shows menu, chose add station, Then enter the call letters into the dialog. Both stations are in the Media Guide, so it will be easy to add them. Hit the Add Station link. 2. For each station, go into Properties using the application key, and copy the Url for the station. 3. From theShows menu, choose Add show manually. Put in the name, which at least in one case I believe to be Lunch With Folks. Paste in the Url you copied. Make sure you're set to capture a stream. I would use your xp system. The two leading programs for recording streams are Replay a/v and Total Recorder. Both are good. I have always preferred Total Recorder. You can download a demo of Replay a/v to try it out, And there are audio tutorials for JAWS users at http://www.applian.com/support-blind.php As for Total Recorder, subscribers to the $9 Sound Computing package have access to several audio tutorials that I created. To modify what I wrote above, if you use Vista, you definitely want to use Replay A/V, and it doesn't work any better with Xp than it does with Vista. Total Recorder is easier to use with Xp. If you use JAWS, there are scripts that make Goldwave quite accessible, and much of this support also exists with Window-Eyes set files. So depending on what you're doing with these files, you may find the enhancements provided by the scripts justify the purchase. The other two programs you mentioned are free, but don't have scripts to make them as user-friendly, though they are both used by many. You can try Goldwave without buying it. I am new to the list and I have a question for those of you who use Jaws and Goldwave. I have been successfully recording from external devices, mostly cassette players, into Goldwave via an external device called an Inport made by Xitel. Wires run from my tape deck into the small Inport device, which contains its own sound card, then into a USB port on my pc. To avoid having the sound cards clash, I would have to add a new line of text to the Jaws ini file that told Jaws that the synthesizer port was my pc sound card. I then had to check the use default only box in the sounds control panel. I would restart the pc, start up Goldwave, start recording on a new file, hit the play button on the external device, and get an mp3 file for my efforts! This was cumbersome, especially having to worry about clashing sound cards. But it worked for 2 years. Well, I recently upgraded from Jaws 7 to Jaws 9. Now every time I go through this procedure, I get a Jaws application error. It knocks Jaws out so that I can't get more details as well. The last thing I hear is Jaws application error, a message is being sent., then the sound is gone! Once in a while, I manage to save some recorded sound in Goldwave, but it contains that bonking noise that you hear when you have done something Windows doesn't like. Something is definitely up. I have tried work arounds such as turning off Jaws once I hit the play button on the external device, but to no avail. Things seem to go fine right up until I send sound in from the external device. I have tried every permutation I can think of; making sure the sound cards are either the one in the pc, or the Inport one in Goldwave and the control panel. I am getting to the point of giving up. I wonder if there is a better way of doing this. Surely there must be other folks using Jaws, Goldwave, and recording sounds from external devices. What do you all use? I have tried googling key words to see what others might use, but no luck so far. Rick Harmon, the Blind Geek Zone master, recommended that I contact the PC Audio group. You all sound very knowledgeable and I really hope that you can point me in the right direction. Perhaps there are ways that avoid using more than one sound card? Let me know what you think. another take on the Rose Parade
I'll take a good satire on the rose parade before the parade itself any day. A good four hours before the actual parade started, KPFK broadcast the parade. Well, it was a spoof, I think from the 70's, produced I believe by something called The Credibility Gap. This historic broadcast starts about an hour into this archive recording of KPFK's late-night show. Parts of it are not at all politically correct: http://64.27.15.184/parchive/pls.php?mp3fil=17551 Enjoy! RE: dasy software packages?
You will not be able to do all you want to do with one package, and you will have to do some work. For instance, if your player doesn't handle certain formats, you'll have to convert them using some other means. Book Wizard Producer from American Printing House coxsts $200.00 US. If you're willing to read its pretty straightforward manual, some, though not all, of what you want to do you can do free with the Daisy Book Generator, available from http://jaapvanlelieveld.xs4all.nl/daisy.htm Basically, you put mp3 files into a folder, run this free program from the context menu for the folder, and it converts the folder contents into a Daisy book which you can then load onto your player. I have been turning podcasts and mp3 audio files into Daisy books with this for my player with great success. Importance: High Hi. Only got general recommendations and links to offer in your persuit of of DAISY creation software, but hope it helps. First off: the DAISY org site which will tell you a lot about the various software packages and hardware options: http://tinyurl.com/8zgfqd Second, Brian Hartgen is the source of much knowledge here in the UK, The last mentioned software package on this page, the Book Wizzard by A P H, is, I think, free, and seems to be highly regarded by some. www.hartgen.org A final thought: the PTR2 CD/CF card recorder is a pretty easy to use solution enabling pretty painless conversion in one box. There is a list, on Freelists I think, the PtR1 users list for this equipment. (Don't be put off by the name; it was started back in the days of the PTR1, but most discussion there is/is around the PTR2 successor. AS for sample rate and bit rate conversion, not sure if you will find much support for that within the DAISY creation software packages, and I would in any case personally look to Goldwave, Sound Forge, Studio recorder for this and the audio processing optionsfacilities you might want. HTH, Ray. goshawk wrote: hello list, I have recently got a portable daisy talking book player, and would like to start making my own daisy book disks, from my own audio library. please can anyone recommend a good fully featured daisy creating software package? it needs to be fully accessible, using window-eyes. the package needs to be fully featured, as I would like to make the disks fully navigable, as I will probably put several books, radio series, or audio described film audio tracks, on to one disk, and would like to be able to select which book or series I want, and easily navigate my way around that book or series, by chapter or episode, or if a particular series had several seasons of it, I would like to be able to navigate by series, season, or episode. I hope I have explained that ok. however, just to make things interesting, the audio books in my library, are all formatted differently, as there are some, that have only as many files, as there were tapes or cds in the original, there are some, that have been taken from cd, with each track on each cd being a file, and there are some, that have just been formatted as a single big file for the whole book. also, the stuff I have, has not all been encoded at the same bit rate, and I have had problems with some mp3 disks before, that will play perfectly in mp3 cd players, dvd players, and my computer, but when I try to play them in my talking book machine, it says something like audio format not supported even though they are mp3 files, and I would like the software package to be able to sort this out if possible, as it is probably something simple, such as re-encoding the mp3 files, in a bit rate that the talking book machine will handle. it would also be quite useful, if the package could have some equaliser, volume boosting, sound enhancement, and unwanted noise removal tools. as some of the stuff I have, either because it was taken from very old recordings, was recorded at too lower level on one or both channels, or encoded at too lower bit rate, doesn't sound that good, which is something, that I would really like to improve if possible, before making daisy disks of it. it would also be nice, if the package could actually record directly from a line or digital in, as I still have a lot of stuff on tape, dat, and minidisk. and if it could also take audio from standard audio cds, which I could use the drive in the computer to read, it would be even better. finally, if possible, I would like the package, to be able to work with different audio formats, as not all the stuff in my library is in mp3 format, some of it is in .ogg, some in .wma, some in standard uncompressed .wav, and some in a form of compressed .wav format. I think it is going to be a bit much, to expect the software to work with

RE: Audio cd burner
I don't know when I'll get to writing more specific instructions, but I'll try to do so. I may record them. Basically, you open the program, hit alt-a for audio and hit enter. The trick is to then navigate to the folder where your audio files are. When you find that folder, you navigate through it. When you find an audio file to add to the compilation, hit alt+d. As I mentioned in the recording, JAWS doesn't read this listing perfectly; System Access and window-Eyes both do. With JAWS, use the read current line hotkey, by default insert+up arrow, to make sure you're really on the audio file you think you're on. The answer should be yes. It will be easier if you run Xp than it would be if you run Vista, but even with Vista it can be done. Try a track and see what results you get. Hi, Pam. .m3u files are indeed playlists. You can o[pen them in a text editor to see what the actual files are. It is often then possible to download those files. The current main menu archives, available at http://www2.acbradio.org/mainmenu/shows.php seem to have download links for easy download. A quick and dirty approach to getting downloads when the provided link is an .m3u is this: Use the right mouse button, choice t to copy the shortcut to the .m3u file. Once it's on the clipboard, use ctrl+o or ald+d to reach a place in IE where you can paste an address. Paste the address, then edit the line, replacing m3u with mp3. Hit enter. Sometimes, you get a download! When I have wished to download audio files from such places as ACB Radio's Main Menu and other sources I have not been able to retrieve an actual file, even with the save as option. It's my understanding that each time I access a link with this extension the computer is connecting to the server where the files are stored. I ask myself what would happen if I wanted to access a file which has been removed. Would I need to capture the material with Replay or Total Recorder, or is there a way to retrieve and store the actual data on my own hard drive? I haven't looked at the new Main Menu site, but even if files can be directly retrieved from there I would like a more complete explanation of .m3u files. Are these play lists? RE: REPLAY AV QUESTION
Don't buy any of them without using one of the promotional codes which will save you a goodly chunk of money. Applian has made these available to the blind community. I put them in Tidbits, so they're in the archive, or ask when you decide on which product you'll buy and I, or somebody else, can send you the relevant money-saving code. The web site lists the programs found in the Capture Suite. One which I sometimes use is Replay Music, which lets you capture music from many of the online music sites in such a way that each song is a separate recording, named with the title and artist. I think the Conversion utility is also a part of that Suite. I just checked the archive, and the discount codes give $20 off the Capture Suite and $15 off Replay a/v. RE: using Total Recorder 7 with software speech
Mike has provided an excellent framework for a comparison between Total Recorder and Replay A/V. I'll intersperse comments after his features, which are unquestioned plusses for Replay A/v. (1) ability to record a stream prior to its reaching the sound card. This is the biggie; Total Recorder doesn't do it, and it is this that allows Replay A/V to work in Vista as well as it works in xp, whereas Total Recorder worksin Vista, but even with Window-Eyes and its ability to select sound cards, not as well as it did in xp. (2) ability to record multiple streams simultaneiously and on a recurring schedule. Both products will do this. (3) A feature allowing one to use RAV both as a recorder and a radio tuner independently and simultaneously. I don't think TR can do this. (4) An url finder feature allowing one to uncover stream urls that are often embedded in complex urls. To me, this would be well worth the $50 or so price tag for the product. Another plus for Replay; Total Recorder has such a reature but I haven't found it to be very accessible. (5) A built-in file converter which can be set to automatically convert recorded streams into the desired media format. Both programs can do this. (6) An easy to use interface which follows conventional Windows menu structure. Both are strong here. (7) Each scheduled entry can be individually managed for file conversion, how long recordings are maintained, and with the ability to edit tags. Again, both are good. (8) A wide variety of general program settings including the customization of names of created files. These general settings include the ability to determine how the program will handle stream interruptions and how many times to attempt reconnects. Again, both are good Additional thoughts: I just prefer Total Recorder, if it would work, but it won't with Vista. I find, on an xp system, I have fewer problems with Replay A/V recordings. Mike says he uses another program sometimes because Replay can't bring the computer out of hibernation. I regularly have Replay A/V bring the computer out of hibernation to make a recording. Total Recorder has some other recording features and some avail add-ons, but at this point, I would not buy it unless you know you'll never migrate to Vista. Replay A/V solves one of Vista's biggest disadvantages, that being its crippled recording features. In fact, I don't think there's much we can do about it, but I can always hope that somebody can find a loophole. Here is my response received from High Criteria support: Hello Dean Martineau, Under Windows Vista with Total Recorder an output of another software (including Internet transmission) can be recorded in three ways: The first one is in SoundBoard mode from a loop-back line. Regretfully in this case you cannot avoid recording your screen-reader. The second way is in Software mode using the Total Recorder user-mode audio driver (for more information on using Total Recorder drivers please refer to the following link http://www.totalrecorder.com/tr_drivers.htm). Using this method you can set Total Recorder to record an output only of a certain application. Regretfully this method will not work with the majority of playback program. The third way is in Software mode using the Total Recorder kernel-mode audio driver. For Total Recorder not to record a screen-reader in this case you can try one of the following: 1) set a screen-reader to use directly your soundcard driver (not Total Recorder driver); 2) do not set the Total Recorder driver as a system default device, but set a playback program an output of which you need to record to use the Total Recorder kernel-mode driver. Yes, Replay a/v is the definite choice for recording in Vista. It captures the audio or video stream before the soundcard ever sees it, so ordinary computer use is not affected at all. the old fm transmitter question again
I'm in a position to advise somebody about an fm transmitter to send the computer audio signal throughout the house. What is the current wisdom? Oh I just love http://www.Jango.com! However, I do have a few questions I'm hoping someone out there can help me with. The first question concerns controlling the volume. I do see a graphic that Jaws reads as volume handle, but it doesn't appear to do anything. Is there a way I can control the player volume independently of the Windows volume control? This has been a drawback to using many players, as sometimes the music overpowers Jaws. Secondly, I am curious what codec they are using? Is it MP3, Windows media or what? I did look in the FAQ, but it doesn't say. Thirdly, how does it come up with your username? Does it just use the part of your E-mail to the left of the at sign? I wanted to be caneprints, and it did indeed let me have that username. Do any of you have a Jango profile? I'm not really used to social networking and streaming together like this, and of course Pandora was a disappointment, but it seems like a pretty cool concept. It's almost spooky though how quickly it learns the type of music you like. Heck, I have such diverse musical tastes that I never thought any software would be able to make me happy, but I find that I'm skipping fewer and fewer songs now the more I hang out at Jango. Subject: NBA audio online Hey folks, Are the NBA broadcasts being streamed through the NBA's official site? If so, I am not finding it. Or, have they moved it to a different address, or simply discontinued it? I'm stumped. RE: Youtube
I have found the results to be variable with the site I'm going to mention, and I haven't used it for what you are asking, though it appears that it should allow you to do what you want. The site is http://www.zamzar.com Let us know how it works. And if so, completely remove the graphic/video, and just have audio? Maybe in Gold Wave, Sound Forge, or any of the other popular sound editers... Thanks.
