What a F#$%#n great band - gone but not forgotten:) No.defenitely not forgotten. I remember expressing the same feeling some months ago on this list... Last time I spoke with Billy he was living over here (Oslo, Norway) because his daughter lives here with her mother. He's been playing with different bands, actually including a Tom Russell showcase on Gamla. I asked about Charles, and I think he said that he was still druming.in some bluesband. There are plans for a full Tom Russell Band tour in Norway late 1999/ early 2000. Charles Caldarola quit TRB before the band split up and was replaced by Mike Warner and in the last couple of years by several other drummers. The band did one show at the end of 1997 at the Gamla in Oslo with Norwegian drummer Tore Wildhauer and Bob Egan (Wilco, Freakwater) filling inn on steel for Fats. Tom Skjeklesæther

We plan to hold the auction during the first week of May. It will be run off the Twangfest web site. Details for that will follow. Right now we are trolling for donations. We already have a few very impressive items in the vault (items autographed by some pretty well-known artists, who also happen to be fictional future ex-husbands to a few P2 gals. g). For example, the Sovines are donating one of their snazzy tuxedo jackets (worn on the cover of their soon to be released cd) and a canned ham. Fear and Whiskey are donating a limited edition FW baseball cap designed by Kinky Friedman. Jerry Curry is donating that hideously ugly shirt that's been talked about so much on the Fluff list. Bill "The Sliver" Silvers is donating one of his purses. CK promises to give us a sweatpant leg hat. Maybe Shane will donate a case of fluff. Twangfest will donate one all access backstage pass and badge (Neal?). Alex promises to buy a round of shots for the highest bidder's favorite band. Get the picture? We need stuff. No item is too trivial or, well, stupid. We'd like to auction off P2 band cd/tapes, t-shirts, bumper stickers, general swag, etc. We'll probably auction them off in lots of 5 or so. If every P2 band could donate a cd and t-shirt or whatever, it would be a beautiful thing. The Twang Gods and Goddesses would surely smile down upon you. All you record labels, music stores, publications, etc. out there, I'm sure you can find something to give us. How about a gift certificate? So, if anyone has anything to offer, please contact us. Re: music on cable tv
The bluegrass segment of the bifurcated "American Originals" station, which itself is one of 31 stations on "Music Choice," is pretty impressive, with a nice mix of classic bluegrass and newgrass, or whatever it's called these days. The Big Band and Blues stations also delve into both obscurities and more classic type stuff. Haven't checked out the "progressive" and "alternative rock" stations yet, and am not sure what's the difference. As for the classic country station, I tuned in last night, and as David Cantwell had mentioned, did catch a really nice flow of great tunes, including Del Reeves (Southern Belles of Southern Bell), Buck Owens (Waiting in Your Welfare Line), Merle (Fightin' Side of Me), Patsy Cline (San Antonio Rose), Gene Watson (You're out there doin what I'd like to be doin at home, or something along those lines), and more, until I had to make the switch to AE's incredible mini-series based on C.S. Forester's Hornblower books. -- Terry Smith np Doug Sahm's "Jukebox Music."

Too many of my favorite records are from those days when music was locally owned and made as were the records and the radio, when saying "that's a band from Memphis" would have meant something. And too many of my other favorite records seem to be trying to recapture the feel of the music of those times. Ah well. I'm in the process of writing some things down, and I remembered an "old days" situation that relates to this. When I was in Jr. High I used to hang out at the local recording studio in Ft. Worth where Maj. Bill Smith had his headquarters (I got to watch some of them records being made) and the thing was, he would cut a single, make an acetate of it on the studio lathe, and walk upstairs with it to KXOL radio (where I eventually was a kid DJ) and if the PD liked it, he'd stick it into the night rotation to see how the kids responded to it. If it did anything, Major Bill would press it up and put it in the stores and the rest would be history. Sam Phillips used to do the same thing in Memphis with Dewey Phillips. These were major, mass-market radio outlets. I daresay you could not walk into your local A3 outlet with a DAT of your latest single and be taken very seriously, and HNC would look at you like you were a dangerous lunatic. The practical effect of this was to remove the layers and layers of bullshit a record has to go through now in order to even make it to a programmer's hands. It really is no wonder that records sound so watery and wimpy- there are about 500 non-musical opinions between it and the air. -- Joe Gracey President-For-Life, Jackalope Records http://www.kimmierhodes.com
Radio
Please don't misunderstand my ranting about radio- I appreciate Mike Hays and everybody else here who does good radio. Some local radio still can make a difference, thank God. I'm speaking generically about corporate numbthink radio as it exists for the most part these days. We actually have a building here in Austin which houses a bunch of little DJ studios with the whole setup and a DAT machine, and there are a whole bunch of DJs in there taping radio shows to be sent out to a whole bunch of radio stations all over the country. They try to simulate the sound of a live DJ who is actually in that town, so they say things like "we're having a great day here in Lompoc" and horrible lame horseshit like that. Can it get any worse than this? Every time I think it has hit rock bottom, somebody comes up with a big drill and takes us farther toward Hell. -- Joe Gracey President-For-Life, Jackalope Records http://www.kimmierhodes.com

Do Joey Burns and John Convertino count, or do their Calexico efforts disqualify them? I dunno. Asylum Street Spankers
Hullo hullo folks -- Yes, those Spankers are mighty good, if you ask me. I waitressed during their set at the Hideout last Friday and was blown away by their collective musicianship and the fabulous pipes of Miss Christina. She was also the most incredible saw player I've ever seen. O.K., so I haven't seen too many saw players, but she was articulate and oh so keen on that blade. She was cranky about it being her birthday and all, but about a thousand people bought her bourbon and cokes -- and she loosened up just in time to blow out the candles on the birthday cake that the Hideout provided. Go see 'em if you can -- the all-acoustic Luddite atmosphere is very affecting -- goosepimply -- and they're dirtybirds too. Still trying to visualize nipples as big as thumbs. Hm... My two tiny cents, respectfully submitted -- Hogan PS, re: The Hideout -- 1354 W Wabansia 773-227-4433 All Chicagoans be aware, I am now bartending at "the house of love" every Tuesday from 2PM-8PM. Come play hooky with me and the Hanna Cylinder Factory and Chicago City Garbage Truck Fleet regulars. See you there. KH

P2 Alert: 40-Acre Feud On the Web... Free!
I stumbled on the fact today that the rarely seen 85-minute feature film "Forty-Acre Feud", starring none other than George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Minnie Pearl and Skeeter Davis (and even more) is currently available for watching free of charge at broadcast.com. If you've never been there, you may have to register (just give your e-mail address) for free access--and it appears you never hear from them again. It will play in semi-living color and sound with either the Windows/Microsoft Media Player or Real Player, at 28.8 or 56 I will attempt to post the page link here, but if it doesn't work for you, you can go to broadcast.com, click on the video channel, then "movies", then Comedy. You'll see it right there for the watching, if you dare. The actual page is this: http://www.broadcast.com/video/BrowsePages/MoviesandFilm/Comedy/ Barry M.

Thought I would bring up Rich Brotherton just because I don't think he's been mentioned yet. Flippo
Terry Allen
From the Fred Eaglesmith mailing list, a serious(?) religious take on Terry Allen's "Salivation": I received a CD in my CARE package today that I thought that some of ya'll more irreverant heads might be interested in. Terry Allen - Salivation Sugar Hill Records I might have lived a sheltered life as I'd never heard of this guy before today. Having been raised a God-fearin' Baptist type, he made me a little uncomfortable with his songs. He reminded me of Fred in his style and execution, but some of his themes are damn near blasphemous at times. He's actually kind of unsettling in a way. I actually had to listen to a Gospel CD afterwards so I wouldn't have to worry that 'I should die before I wake.' I know that some people like this edgy / scary / folk stuff. It does what all good art is supposed to do, it'll move you. If you're an agnosticated-type it might even be funny at times. As for me, I'd never let this guy babysit my young'uns. -- Christopher Adams [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Strange Things Happenin' Every Day" - Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Re: Noisehorse (Re: candy butchers?)
Mark Linkous is one of the best things to happen in my musical life in several years. won't soon forget him asking for more little ones up front, at an instore hereabouts (and loved him and his bandmates. skipped the real gig the next night. weasels are too noisy.)

I hope that era returns soon so that I can rampage across the land myself. I'll vote for that (not knowing whether a Gracey rampage might be too dangerous to the locals). Sigh. I try not to get too sentimental for olden days but it's hard not to wish for such things. Too many of my favorite records are from those days when music was locally owned and made as were the records and the radio, when saying "that's a band from Memphis" would have meant something. And too many of my other favorite records seem to be trying to recapture the feel of the music of those times. Ah well. Will Miner Denver, CO

Costello also recorded Payne's They'll Never Take Her Love From Me. It was the B-side of the Coward Brothers' (Costello T-Bone Burnett) single, People's Limousine.
