Of course now I have a bogus address at the bottom of the list,

AFAIK this type of problem with the drop down list has been an issue
for a long time. Anyway, try what I did a long time ago to "solve" the
issue.:

- Create a New group.
- DO NOT set to "Add items to the instant address popup"
- Add an address, even a fake one, and mark it as "Favourite".
- Close AB and see is the drop down list appears (see mine attached).
- If it doesn't, try re-starting TB.

If that doesn't work, remember that you can access the Favourites drop
down by right-clicking on any header field of a new message. See

I have some feeling that even if TBOT would reincarnate under the

I couldn't know how many members TBOT had exactly, but for sure it was

That type of error (access violation) are usually due to a software
bug, and usually difficult to investigate.

I suggest that you open a bug report at https://bt.ritlabs.com.

Thank you, both, for your suggestions. Before following any of that, I tried a
"tried and true" solution: I closed down The Bat and reopened it. That worked
like magic! So, I don't know what happened. The account was a
long-standing account and the one that I use most frequently, so it is not as
if there was an incorrect password. The status bar merely said that 0 messages
were downloaded. The log said "invalid pointer operation." I believe some
error messages did appear occasionally up when I was having the problem and
they may have said what the log shows (invalid pointer operation).

The best explanation is that my computer may have groaned under the weight of
too many open windows: probably over 50 at the time (I was mutli-tasking
and had a lot going on).

Anyway, TB is working fine at this time.

Thanks, again.

Do you gete any error message? The reason can be anything from wrong password
or a typing mistake in the server name. Once we have ruled those out, we can
look deeper.

Do you have the status bar enabled in your TB!? If not, please hit shift-crtl-L
while you are in the main window. Then check the account. After that, click on
the status bar (it's at the bottom), and it will open as a separeate window.
Copy and paste in your reply. (Hide email address etc if you wish.)

I had already re-arranged the folders and didn't have an
opportunity to try this, but will keep it in mind. An undo would
be a great addition, since there's no choice in the window to
restore the previous set-up. I filed the folders into family
members first, then ranked people who need to be answered right
away, then others who are not so frequent. It would be difficult
for TB! to offer a choice to sort this way! :-)Thanks Jack.

Yes, that's it! Thanks Thomas. I now see that there's a

Hi Mike,

Multiple processes means the software has multiple instances running at one
time, as shown in the task manager. Chrome browser does this. I don't really
understand why some programs are designed to do this. It won't affect your
handling of email, but usually means using huge amounts of memory. More about
this here:

I too use The Bat! (for personal email) and Thunderbird (for business email). What do you mean by Thunderbird becoming multi-process?  I'm not familiar with that term. What does it mean and how should I expect my email to change?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

I believe you have clicked on the "Name" header on top of the folder list. I
don't dare do it now to try, as I don't think there is an "undo" function...

Thanks, Peter (and Stuart, who also responded), but I want to do this elegantly.     It is about having a "professional appearance."   I see the BCC trick all the time.  I know it works, but I have also received group e-mail where the address is to the group name and would like to know how to do that. Thanks.

Probably not very helpful, but since you mentioned "professional appearance": I regularly receive circulars from my embassy and also from different foreign chambers of commerce with their own email address in the TO field and everybody else in BCC. I do find that professional. - Just my 2 cents' worth.

I think that the Mass Mailing feature was designed for this.
However, it will show each recipient's address in the To: field rather
than the name of the Group.

I am using version 6.0.12 with an even more obsolete Help File, so
your mileage may vary. :-)

I've found that if you start a new email and place your cursor in the TO field,
the little address book icon appears at the far right of the field. Clicking on
the icon will of course open your address book. Select a group (folder) and open
it. In the column of arrows the second one down is a double-right arrow. When
you click on that double-right arrow it will place the name of the group
(folder) in the box to the right. However, you'll see that if the group has two
names as in "The Group", it will reverse the names as "GroupThe". Take that into
consideration.

I tried it with a folder I have called MISC and it displayed it in the right box
as "Misc_handle " so you'll probably have to play around to get it to
display correctly.

Good luck.

You can just use BCC instead of the To: field for the list. You may still have to put your address in the To: field though.

When I look at Stuart's message from a couple of days ago, his

whatever virus program which normally has a cut line. The same
for Acheton's message. Jack's shows the derangement and there is
a double cut line in his sig. However, like yours, Mike's doesn't
seem to have a double cut line, but his sig is showing as broken
here as well. A mystery!

This was also my understanding. I wonder if the insertion of
another cut mark by the particular virus checker after the sig
prevents operation of the cut mark inserted by you in your
template from working as designed?

I think I need someone to define the purpose of the cut mark because I thought
it was to automatically eliminate everything below the cut mark (including the
cut mark) when replying. When I clicked REPLY to this email Mike, your cut mark
and everything below it is visible.

For what it's worth, my editor is automatically set to Plain Text(MicroEd)
whenever I communicate with this list. Somewhere in the distant past it was
recommended to use Plain Text(MicroEd) for this list.

Concerning your sig file, I had the same problem it wasn't being recognised the two dashes were there but the space was missing. I was creating my sig files in HTML mode which failed I found using plain text to create the sig all was well again. It always used to work in HTML but a while back it stopped working. I just selected all my sig file and then selected plain text and it seemed to work. Hope this helps Jack.

Difficult to reply to you, as you are top-posting.

No, it does not make sense, as it means you cannot read it properly. And over
here, it does not have (even when I leave your mails as HTML), all lines are
properly wrapped. So I am a bit surprised that it happens to you.

Hmmm, very interesting. When I reply to this (your) email, I'm replying with
your email quoted in the my reply. Your entire sig appears, cut mark, Warmest
regards etc. If I "select" (highlight) your cut mark, the highlight stops after
the two dashes. It does not stop after the trailing dash as you would expect
indicating that the trailing space is not there. This is what prompted me to
remark on it in the first place.

However, since this email also contains my original email to you, my sig is
displayed also which means mine didn't work either. If I try to select
(highlight) my cut mark. It will highlight the two dashes but not the trailing
space. Actually since my sig appears in the first place it would indicate that
my cut mark doesn't work also. And I *know* my cut mark is dash, dash, space.
It would seem that TB is stripping the trailing space on our cut marks thereby
rendering them inoperative. Or I've totally misconstrued the function of the cut
marks in the first place.

Not sure if this will help because I'm using an older version of TB but if you
go to OPTIONS-PREFERENCES-EDITOR PREFERENCES, then in the box that appears is
"Wrap text at xx characters".

I wonder whether it is a bug, or whether the filters work correctly and find
the search string somewhere else in the many headers.

@Tom: Can you say something about this? Even if it is the whole email address,
maybe it is contained somewhere also in the headers? - Sounds like a weird

I hardly do any searches for email, but if Header is an option, it
should work. You may need to open a bug report.

Anyway, until you are sure that searching Header works, for all
correspondence with one person you can search for Sender .OR.
Recipient.

Also, you may want to set up Options/Preferences/Address History.

Instead of using broad searches like Header, I search specific headers such as
Sender and/or (as appropriate) Recipient. It works well over here, I do not get
results that contain any false positives.

I have a filter to move messages to a certain folder, and it contains only
three letters in Headers. I get a lot of false positives, because this
combination can be in any of the headers by coincidence or for another reason.

This won't be very helpful I'm afraid except misery loves company. I have
always had problems with searching my emails. As you stated above you get heaps
of results none of which have anything to do with the header entered. I get
those same results almost every time I search for something. It helps sometimes
to change the search target. Instead of HEADER you can try TEXT or ANY PART.
This works sometimes but not nearly often enough. Either we're doing something
wrong or it just doesn't work correctly.

BTW, apparently your cut mark doesn't work as you can see. It has to be dash
dash space. I think you're missing the trailing space.

Looking at the image you attached, what are you expecting to see in TB! from

FWIW I also change the number of seconds to 0 [zero] when I create a new
account. I think zero shjould be the default. I see no reason why anybody would
want to wait 2 seconds.

Yep. The blank area below the menu usually appears when I recover TB! from
minimised. Unless I an using "classic" theme.

Not necessarily. They monitor TBBeta when there is a beta cycle. To

In umpteen year using TB I have never used that option. Why use a
number of seconds to mark a message as read? I want to mark a message
as read when I decide I have read it. To achieve that, I use
SmartSpace reading.

Agreed, indeed this function is a key part of my workflow. Presumably RL
employees monitor this forum for bugs etc?

Not exactly a fix but more of a work-around - ACCOUNT>PROPERTIES>OPTIONS>mark
messages as read when it is being read for [x] seconds.

No, I can't reproduce the problem. But it seems that MFPA and perhaps
others, have seen a similar problem.
