Re: [ubuntu-in] Configure the IP
I also have a similar problem to this... I cannot assign a static IP address to my ubuntu powered laptop when it is connected to the router/LAN via wifi. I require a static IP so I can configure NAT on my router and not change it s configuration every time the IP address changes. I have checked that this can be done in windows, so there is no reason why this can't be done in ubuntu as well. This is a techno-political discussion :) Anyway TB is freely available, so this is more of a moot point. Anyway which one do you think is better? with reasons please. I have used TB as well as evolution for my work mails (The server is Exchange server for calendaring and mails, + IMAP/POP support). For everything, I find TB (IMAP) + Lightning + Davmail + Enigmail (TB Extension for GPG) as working better than Evolution. This combination still has some bugs, etc - but no other good alternative. Davmail basically acts as a Calendar gateway to talk to the exchange server using Caldav (OWA or Outlook Web Access). This allows a better calendar experience than just lightning, if you need Exchange Calendaring support. If you're looking at a purely local calendar, then davmail is not required. HTH.

[ubuntu-uk] Warning to all users of Samba
Hello There, I havent ever made my own email thread before, but i figured i would start with a check and protect message.. Never, ever leave Samba open without due care and attention, all too often i see people telling others to install Samba without warning them of the possible implications, many people are quite lazy, and instead of settings everything up, will just check the Allow guest access button. What i wasnt aware of, is the fact that it broadcasts on Port 139, went straight through my routers firewall and allowed everyone on the internet to access my entire home folder. My computer has been open for months, has had a count of 104 successful access attempts from external IP's all because i forgot about Samba. Well, i have sure learnt my lesson, can anyone tell me what can be gained from my user area in terms of web-passwords? What router do you have? I have the bog standard Netgear router which Virgin supply with thw 20Mbit cable service. I've just run a check with Shield's Up and it reports back... Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist! and... Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer. Saying that though, the router would need to know which of my 7 machines to forward port 139 to. I can see how this could happen if port forwarding was specifically setup to forward port 139, or if a machine's IP address was specified in the router's DMZ configuration (I believe on some routers, there is an option to make an IP address a default for all ports to be forwarded to), but I've not come across it as being a default setting, not to say that it doesn't happen though. I dare say it's also a good idea to make sure you're not forwarding ports say when using a dialup or mobile broadband connection (or maybe a USB ADSL modem or a PC plugged directly into a cable modem without a router or firewall in between the PC and modem). Hi Daniel, Sorry to hear about this. Would you care to expand on some elements which might help others understand the issue.. What i wasnt aware of, is the fact that it broadcasts on Port 139, It uses the same port as Windows CIFS/SMB, so yes, it will appear on that port and to some will look like a Windows host, sharing out files. went straight through my routers firewall This I don't get. Normally NAT (Network Address Translation) is combined with a firewall in the router which allows traffic out but not random traffic in. More often you'd have an internet network address on the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x range and externally you'd have a public IP address. Normally users on the internet outside your network will not be able to 'see' anything inside your LAN. The exceptions to this would be if you enabled port forwarding of specific ports or if you had placed your machine in the DMZ. The other possibility is that you are connected directly to a cable modem (such as you might get from Virgin Media) which has no firewall. My computer has been open for months, has had a count of 104 successful access attempts from external IP's all because i forgot about Samba. How did you discover that you were 'oversharing' and how did you know how many requests had been made? What i wasnt aware of, is the fact that it broadcasts on Port 139, went straight through my routers firewall and allowed everyone on the internet to access my entire home folder. I'd add to this that correct firewall configuration is rarely applied in the majority of cases. Many domestic routers tout the ability to firewall traffic but in actual fact are just glorified routers with NAT. A full firewall allows the securing of outbound traffic as well and a default deny policy should always be used. That way if anything on the internal network breaches these rules then it can be noticed and investigated accordingly. In some cases it is possible and acceptable to log accepted traffic as well. windows boxes will also broadcast on 137 and 445. in your case i'm not sure how this broadcast traffic has actually hit the internet and exposed a vulnerability. The purpose of subnetting means that broadcast traffic only goes to machines within the same subnet. For example, a broadcast packet (sent to 192.168.1.255) on the network 192.168.1.0/24 could not technically hit 192.168.2.1 even i it was connected to the same physical switch. id suggest that the problem is probably that the machine was within a dmz or connected directly (bridged or via a modem) to allow a compromise to take place. [ubuntu-uk] Warn users about dodgy hardware
I've been testing Lucid recently, and found that support for the ATI X1200 graphics card is pretty rubbish. For those who aren't aware of the issues, the problem basically boils down to ATI sending the X1200 (and a raft of other chipsets) into legacy support despite the fact that manufacturers were still shipping laptops with them installed. As you might expect, ATI are not maintaining the legacy driver and as luck would have it, the driver doesn't work with newer versions of X.Org (so anything after Ubuntu 9.04). The community contributed driver is pretty immature, and renders my laptop pretty much unusable. Because of this, I'm going to have to revert back to Windows 7 (saving Ubuntu merely for the netbook unfortunately). Anyway, my point is this Wouldn't it make sense to run hardware detection during the installation process and if detected, warn users that certain hardware is known not to work well with Ubuntu? I can imagine that Jo Public would be rather miffed if he found after spending a lot of time installing and configuring his system that he didn't have 3d support, or that his computer ended up running so slowly that he couldn't use it after an hour or so? He might appreciate it if he was told this before he wasted too much time trying to get Ubuntu with hardware that is only going to cause him problems. Now what i didnt realize was that my sister opened DMZ onto her internal IP at the time so she could get a decent download speed over torrent. I only realized when somebody contacted me over MSN and told me that they had managed to access my entire user area, i then checked /var/logs/samba and found a lot of requests from external IP addresses. Am I wrong in thinking this post is really a warning about not setting you router up securely? If you are unable to control the router or the IP address your Ubuntu box is assigned, then you can always run a firewall and/or AppAmor on you Ubuntu box. If you can control the router, set the router up to only give dhcp addresses between a certain range i.e. 1-100. Then set your ubuntu systems to use static addresses above 100. If you need dynamic addresses, i.e. you have a laptop, you should still be able to tell the router to give your ubuntu box a specific IP address based on its MAC number (the electronic number for your network device) - need to do this for both wired and wireless (if applicable). You can set all the PC's in your house to get specific IP address on all modern routers. All my Ubuntu servers, physical and virtual, get assigned static IP addresses from the DHCP server on my router from the broadband company. -- John Stevenson jr0cket.com leanagilemachine.com -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

A Better Way to Accessible Live Cd?
Hi List! I am trying to install Lucid, and cannot get an accessible install, that is, assuming the usb key boots, in the first place. The magic key sequence hitting 'space' every 4 seconds for the 1st 30, then 'f5 3 enter enter', does not work. When the live cd session boots, and I manually start orca from the run dialogue, I go through the setup and try logging back in; it never happens right. Also, while in the setup, another orca tries to start preferences, then both end up locked. Option of powering down is only one left to me. I've tried starting another x session, thinking I might be able to come up talking. Why must such a magic sequence be necessary? Is it too much to ask that a working orca be available, just by starting it from the menus or the run dialogue in the live session? Alternative Communication Device
Hello, I have lurked on this list for quite sometime, it is rather interesting. I work on autism research at the MIT Media Lab. Recently, I entered a competition so that I could get money in order to continue my work on an alternative communication device. It would be great if some of you could vote for me in the competition at http://beta-globalchallenge.mit.edu/teams/view/60. You need to register to vote (talk about bad design), but it is quick and easy. For the device, we are using an arduino in order to program proximity sensors to pick up input and then using LEDs and a screen for output. With more money, we may be able to develop a design where full typing is available with even low motor skills. If any of you have suggestions or are interested in trying to work on this or test this, please email me. Thanks! ~Molly (Shidash) McGrath In hoc signo vinces! A primary prompt was when a 90-year-old dear friend got into difficulties with sending emails and I tried to look for support organisations to assist him. You may be aware how difficult it is to guide someone via the phone and screenshots to solve a computer problem. Apparently a home visit was indicated but none of the organisations under the governmental auspices of providing services to senior Australians had the manpower (womanpower) available to accommodate such a need. The problem in question was eventually resolved. Today, after negotiating an invitation, I attended a local Computer Pals for Seniors group. I have had about 25 years of experience with computers and thought myself to be adequately qualified to offer my services. Even then I had to argue my case. A misunderstanding? Perhaps the word got out that I was there to present something alien because an early remark of we don't teach Apple, only Microsoft gave me some indication of things to come. I bit my tongue. As the meeting was about to finish I asked for time to address the assemblage. This was granted. My offering was this: That I was willing to provide assistance with computer problems in the home in return for the reimbursement of traveling expenses ( I am talking about country distances and country travel ). That was well received and a negotiator and person for contact was established. I made sure that everyone understood that I was not prepared to teach the use of Microsoft software but would assist anyone who needs assistance out of a tight spot no matter which operating system was in use. I also took the opportunity to question why anyone would use commercial software, especially when the cost to pensioners is considered, the group of people who can least afford it. One person wanted to argue that MS Word was far superior to OpenOffice.org. I pointed out that I had not come to argue any case for or against. Yes, I showed them Ubuntu Karmic Koala, took their photos via Cheese and generally displayed, with pride, what Ubuntu has to offer. Unfortunately there was no hot-spot for internet. The group seems to be firmly entrenched in Microsoft products because MS has given them licences for all their software at almost no cost. Another factor is that many have an inherited computer system, one passed down to them as relatives upgrade their equipment and, of course, equipped with Windows. Will I go to the next meeting? You can bet on it. I noticed that MS is represented as one of the contributors to the Annual Conference in September. I wanted to post this so that whoever is going to represent (or present) Ubuntu at the ASCCA conference in Sydney in September is not caught on the back foot. Good Luck. A couple of comments: * On the Launchpad project, I'd recommend enabling automatic bzr translation exports in addition to imports. This will make your life easier as a maintainer by committing the translations directly to a bzr branch on a daily basis. To do this, you simply need to go to https://translations.launchpad.net/website-localization/trunk/+translations-settings and choose a bzr branch where to export translations. More info on [1]. * I see you are attending UDS, so I believe it would be a good opportunity to schedule a session on the website localization. I can help with that if you want. What do you think? Update gtranslator package?
Hi, we noticed only recently that the version of gtanslator that will be shipped with Ubuntu 10.04 is 1.9.6 (released on September 2009). This version has a serious issue that makes it literally unusable (see https://launchpad.net/bugs/454940): gtranslator 1.9.6 tends to crash too often due to misreading of PO headers. So, basically, it's unusable. This is the situation we have right now: * Debian has the 1.9.9 release of gtranslator - good * Luca Falavigna (DktrKrantz) can build the Ubuntu package - good * We need an exception - bad Yes, unfortunately there are too many changes between .6 and .9 release, bugfixing but also feature additions and misc stuff. Please note that gtranslator 1.9.x is a development version, so the usage of latest available package is the best to do. Why I'm writing this here? Because we are looking for somebody that could grant an exception for this package, and probably if we have a big number of translators that would favor this, we can move things forward. Do you know anybody that can grant us that exception? Greetings to you, O Ubuntu microcosm of linguistic variation! We're at that time of the release cycle again where the release notes are coming together, and your help is needed to translate them. The Ubuntu 10.04 LTS release candidate is coming Thursday, so we want to make sure our users get useful information when clicking that link from within the live CD installer. Draft release notes for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes. While these are not yet final, I expect that all the issues documented there will be included in the final release notes. And as for past releases, please use https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes/langcode for your translations. When you are ready to have these translations linked from the Ubuntu website, please post a link to your translation on this wiki page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes/Translations Using this format: [[link-to-translation|LANG]] completed date by person Thanks, -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Scheduling Translations meeting for Thursday
Hi all, I know everyone is busy getting their translations ready for the langpack deadline, but UDS is also round the corner and I'd like to start discussing the translations sessions, so that we can start scheduling them. Therefore, I'd like to propose the next Ubuntu Translations meeting on: * WHAT: Ubuntu Translations Meeting https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Meetings/2010-04-22 * WHEN: Thursday, 22nd Apr, 15:00 UTC * WHERE: #ubuntu-meeting IRC channel on Freenode As I say, the main topic I'd like to discuss are the UDS sessions. I've gone ahead and have created a wiki page to add proposals for sessions, as we did for Lucid: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/UDS So I'd encourage everyone who'd like to see something discussed at UDS to add session proposals there, which we can discuss at the meeting to come up with a good list. Even if you cannot make it to UDS, please feel free to add sessions there. If you cannot make it to the meeting on Thursday, you can also start a discussion on this thread. You'll see that on the current list there are some links to blueprints already. I did that for the ones I considered most important for now. Feel free to just add session proposals now and to take care of the blueprint later. If you've got any questions, just ask as usual! Re: [Ubuntu-BR] [Off topic] Instalação do Ubun tu em Cartões Flash
No meu caso, cujo backup diário não ultrapassa 50Mbs, ficou show.

Tenho uma aplicacao rodando em php, porem, tenho que por no meu cron a seguinte linha que busca a cada 5 min os emails via POP para dentro desta aplicacao: */5 * * * * php /usr/local/apache/htdocs/system/pipe/pop.php Estranhamente, retorna este erro: PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20060613/mysql.so' - /usr/lib/php5/20060613/mysql.so: cannot open shared object +file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20060613/mysqli.so' - /usr/lib/php5/20060613/mysqli.so: cannot open shared object +file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20060613/pdo_mysql.so' - /usr/lib/php5/20060613/pdo_mysql.so: cannot open shared +object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 Site error: the file b/usr/local/apache/htdocs/system/pipe/pop.php/b requires the ionCube PHP Loader ioncube_loader_lin_5.2.so to be installed by the +site administrator. Ja tentei o bash, o sh.. e nada!! Alguem tem alguma ideia??
